GAPP Architects and Urban Designers have a different approach to empowerment. A number of initiatives some dating back to the early 70s and mid 80s demonstrate a contribution to true skills development in an industry where demand is high and continues to grow. The policy developed by the firm focuses on people development as opposed to the acquisition of partners. GAPP presently has 25% of its equity held by PDIs with 12.5% equity under black ownership. Employment equity consists of 45% BEE Staff at an operational level. “At GAPP we have cultivated an ethic and culture of individual development where we will contribute to our own team members and promote advancement from within.”

QUOTE BY GAPP DIRECTOR BURSARIES ASSIST THE PREVIOUSLY DISADVANTAGED A bursary scheme, developed by GAPP, annually provides financial aid to black students for fees and living expenses for their final year at university. There are currently three students on this programme. “Developing skills within the architectural and urban design arena requires a medium to long term view. The directors of GAPP believe that assisting students in architectural studies, whether while at university, or within one of the three South African offices, is optimal in terms of contributing to empowerment objectives.”

QUOTE BY GAPP DIRECTOR

In addition to internal training programmes GAPP also oversees the Royal Institute of British Architects Bursary Scheme pro bono. This scheme provides R250 000.00 scholarships to disadvantaged BEE architectural students. Glen Gallagher director emeritus and a founding member of GAPP was responsible for persuading the Royal Institute of British Architects to set up a bursary fund for students who have been deprived as a result of apartheid. He has administered the fund since its inception and chairs a local committee on behalf of the Royal Institute of British Architects who select students on an annual basis. The first bursaries were awarded in 1986. ASSOCIATIONS WITH YOUNG ARCHITECTS Associations with young black architects to facilitate skills transfer, is another GAPP empowerment initiative. This includes assistance with technical and administrative support in obtaining work and executing it and leading to the set up of independent offices. GAPP has successfully initiated this with two young black graduates from the University of Witwatersrand for a school, financed by the IDT in Soshanguve near Pretoria. “We anticipate that this project will eventually expand to become a larger campus with several types of educational facilities in Soshanguve under the direction of a group of highly motivated and highly educated black women from the area. Our goal is for these young architects, as they gain experience, to eventually take over complete control and responsibility for this project as independent architects.”

COLLABORATION WITH PREVIOUSLY DISADVANTAGED FIRMS GAPP has worked alongside small and previously disadvantage firms for over 20 years, supports the associations and the spirit of diversity which emerges. Over the years GAPP has worked in association with a number of small disadvantaged and previously disadvantaged firms. PIONEERS IN COMMUNITY HOUSING and OTHER COMMUNITY PROJECTS In the early 70s members of GAPP actively involved themselves in interaction with communities in both Johannesburg and Cape Town where low income housing was a requirement. Today, their involvement aligns with current government strategies and policies. In addition the firm has worked as architects for the upgrading of fourteen “shack schools” in Winterveld. The project involved the teaching staff and SMME builders in the area. The GAPP team assisted the latter in project management which ensured building upgrades without disrupting the education process. / C O N T A C T S
