Student Development at AppState

ACT is supported by both Student Development and Academic Affairs, and is a proud member of North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide university coalition dedicated to community service, service-learning, and civic engagement initiatives. The ACT Service-Learning & Community-Based Research Program is a unit within Appalachian’s University College. University College consists of the university’s integrated general education curriculum, academic support services, residential learning communities, interdisciplinary degree programs and co-curricular programming all designed to support the work of students both inside and outside of the classroom.

Appalachian & the Community Together

Student Development at Appalachian State University integrates both in-class and out-of-class experiences for students. These educational efforts are directed at developing both intellect and character of students. To accomplish this, the University makes available a wide range of educational experiences through programs and activities that complement and support the academic experience in the classroom. Although the primary focus of these activities is to advance student learning, they also provide needed services, support, and recreational opportunities to help students meet the challenges of college and to enhance the quality of student life. The Division of Student Development has been organized to help accomplish these aspects of the University’s mission. Student life is the focus of the programs and activities of the Division.

I decided to attend App for a number of reasons but I believe that what sold me on it was the people. When I got to GAPP, I was greeted by people and met students who would be in my future cohort. Everyone was incredibly friendly and willing to answer any of my questions. I “felt” like I was at home and that this was the school I wanted to attend. I also really appreciated my professors sitting down with me and explaining what the program looks like and opportunities that they offered for us. Over all, I felt that by attending App, I would gain the most experiences to help me be successful in the future in Student Affairs.

My assistantship provides me professional development opportunities. It urges me to be professionally curious, and polish my professional judgment every day.

John CimminoMA College Student DevelopmentCollege Outdoor Program AdministrationResidence Director for Bowie Hall

I chose Appalachian because the mountains were calling my name. The COPA track was extremely intriguing to me because I love outdoor education and I want to pursue a career in Recreation or Experiential Education. Seeing Boone at GAPP weekend won me over because the area was so beautiful. I truly felt like I fit in.

Appalachian State University has given me the unique opportunity to pursue two of my passions at once. While I am pursuing my Master’s Degree in Political Science I am developing professionally through my assistantship in housing. The practical experience I am gaining is unparalleled and will open a number of doors for me upon graduation.

Lindsey WoodsCollege Student Development Community Partnerships Graduate Assistant with ACT

I decided to attend Appalachian, because I was looking for a graduate program that offered a variety of professional development experiences. I also was interested in moving to a new location that I had never experienced before. I had never seen snow or mountains until I moved to the High Country!

Pankaj DesaiHigher Education Administration (Community College and University Leadership)Residence Director for Appalachian Heights

The opportunity to learn the most about Residence Life in the least amount of time was my primary motivation while applying for this assistantship. Also, the rare opportunity of directly overseeing the day-to-day administration of a residence hall with close to 300 students was yet another incentive. The fact that ASU started out as a teachers’ training college and has had a strong tradition as a reputed college of education made me choose the program here over the others. Also, the scenic geographic setting of the university was also a factor. I love living in Boone!
