Head Coach McCAll Salmon - Second Season

McCall Salmon is in her second season as the head coach for the softball program after five years as the top assistant/associate head coach. In her first season at the helm of the program in 2014, Salmon led the Panthers to a 38-10 overall record including a 16-2 WHAC record to claim the regular season (2011, 2012) and conference (2011, 2013) championship for the third time in program history. Davenport returned to the NAIA National tournament for the third time in four years finishing 2-2 overall and falling in the opening round championship game. In 2014 she saw one player earn NAIA 2nd Team All-American honors, NFCA 1st Team & 2nd Team All-American, five All-Conference selections, including the WHAC Player of the Year and also Newcomer of the Year along with being named an NAIA Scholar team for a cumulative GPA of 3.463.

A first baseman/utility player for the Saints, McCall led her team to three straight WHAC Championships from 2005-2007 and the team posted a 134-70 overall record during her time there. Individually, Salmon earned All-WHAC honors in 2004, 2006 and 2007 while serving as the Saints team captain during her junior and senior campaigns. She also excelled in the classroom at Aquinas as she was named to the All-WHAC Academic team in 2006 and 2007 and was an NAIA Scholar Athlete in her senior year. At the completion of her senior year, Salmon was also honored with the prestigious Helen Louise Brogger Award which is given to the top female athlete in the graduating class.

Mother Nature likes to play games tooThe Panthers learned earlier in the week that the Lindenwood-Belleville Tournament, which was to be held in Elizabethtown, Ky., was cancelled. But coach McCall Salmon worked with the Lynx coaching staff as well as Taylor’s to schedule two games each against each other at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. Davenport has lost only one game to weather and that was during their matchup against Judson last Saturday. DU only made it to the fourth inning leading 7-5 but missed the minimum requirement of five innings for it to be an official game.

Not a bad startDavenport returned to Michigan with an impressive 10-1 mark to start the season last week. The only defeat the Panthers suffered was to Northwood (Fla.) in game two of the doubleheader, falling 11-10 in 12 innings.

A quick look at Lindenwood-BellevilleThe Lynx had a very busy weekend last week to open the 2015 season, playing six games in three days at the NFCA/NAIA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., going 2-4 on the year with wins over Georgia Gwinnett and No. 19 Williams Woods. Taylor Winn, a two-way player, has been doing it all for the Lynx, leading the team with a .400 batting average and a home run while on the circle she is 2-0 with an earned run allowed in 16.1 innings of work and 14 strikeouts.

Panthers vs. LynxDavenport and Lindenwood-Belleville have never met on a softball diamond but have seen each other in women’s lacrosse and women’s basketball.

A quick look at TaylorThe Trojans are coming off a 5-1 to the 2015 season, splitting with Webber International in the season opener and sweeping a doubleheader at Northwood (Fla.) back in January. They also defeated Cumberland and Tennessee Wesleyan last Saturday to resume the season. Alex Lovelace is currently 13-for-21 with a pair of doubles to lead Taylor offensively. Ashley Miller and Davis Carter have each hit two home runs and combined for 14 RBI. Hannah Robbins started three of her four appearances and is 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA and 20 strikeouts.

The last time vs. TaylorThis will also be the first time Davenport and Taylor meet in softball. The two schools met in both soccer, basketball and volleyball.

That’s a lot of runs!Davenport proved its can do serious damage on the base paths. In the 11 games, the Panthers outscored opponents 101-30 with 87 of those runs were driven in. On the pitching side, opponents have earned 26 of the 30 runs.

Getting it DunneKC Dunne is clearly sending a message to those who challenge her for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Year award. The reigning recipient is hitting .500 with a 1.100 slugging percentage, tallying four doubles, triples and home runs each along with driving in 21 runs.

I got your backPaige Sant’Angelo has settled into the fourth spot in the lineup last week. The third baseman has started all 11 games in the cleanup spot and is hitting .400 with a pair of doubles and three homers. She also knocked in 13 runners.

Eastman on a StreakAlyssa Eastman may have had a busy week in Florida, but the two-way player showed she can handle the job. While she batted .412 last week, the sophomore tallied a hit in all 11 games. She also stretched for three doubles, two three-baggers and homers each. As a pitcher, she is 4-0 but has allowed 13 runs – all earned – in 28 innings of work.
