INTRODUCTIONThe Galaxy Telecom Module is an optional add-on to the GalaxyControl Panel. It is intended for connection to the Galaxy 8, 18, 60,128, 500, 504 and 512 (High Security) control panels. It is a highlyintelligent and compact module, combining both digitalcommunication capabilities and remote servicing facilities.

The Telecom Module is connected to the RS485 communicationline 1 (AB line) on the Galaxy control panels with the followingexceptions,

-Galaxy 128-Galaxy 500 (Rev 1.5X or above)-Galaxy 504-Galaxy 512 ((High Security), Rev 1.5X or above).

When using these, control panels the Telecom Module must beconnected to the connector S3.

As a digital communicator (digicom), the Telecom Module transmitsalarm signals using the selected format (the factory setting default isDTMF – Dual Tone Multiple Frequency – Fast Format). Available formats are:

-SIA (Levels 0 - 3)-Contact ID-Microtech (Ademco Microtech proprietary protocol for use withAlarm Monitoring)-Short Messaging Service (only available when used withGalaxy panel V4.00 and above. Refer to the GalaxyProgramming Manual IP1-0027 for further details)

As a remote servicer the Telecom Module can be used – inconjunction with Galaxy Gold software – to remotely access theGalaxy control panel, allowing copying and overwriting of theprogram and on-line servicing.

SECTION 1: INSTALLATION

PLACEMENTMounting the Telecom ModuleThe plastic mounting feet should be placed inside the mountingholes of the Telecom Module. The plastic coating should then beremoved from the feet and the Telecom Module placed on the backof the control box beneath the control panel. See Figure 1. TheTelecom Module must be placed in accordance with regulationsstated on page 5.

The Telecom Module must be mounted in such a way as to beinaccessible without the use of a specially designed tool.

Recommendations for placing Terminal equipmentinside Host equipment.In this instance the term “Terminal Equipment” refers to the GalaxyTelecom Module and the term “Host Equipment” refers to thecontrol panel, its box, and the associated power supply apparatus,including the Stand-by battery and terminal connector block. Whenthe Telecom Module is installed, the figures given below (Table 1)for minimum Clearance and Creepage distances must be adheredto: failure to maintain these minimum distances would invalidate theapproval.

Clearance is defined as the distance between the Telecom Moduleand the Host equipment via a non-conductive medium (e.g. the air).Creepage is defined as the distance between the Telecom Moduleand the Host equipment via the surfaces of the environment. SeeFigure 2.NOTE: The larger distance shown in brackets in the Creepagesection applies where the local environment within the host issubject to conductive pollution or dry non-conductive pollution thatmay become conductive due to condensation.

WIRINGConnection to the control panelThere are three basic configurations. These are listed below withtheir wiring details.

1. Galaxy 128, Galaxy 500 (Rev 1.5X or above), Galaxy 504 or512 ((High Security), Rev 1.5X or above).JP2 or JP3 on the Telecom Module must be linked toconnector S3 on the control panel using the four-way jumperlead. This terminal will be marked with a telephone icon.

2. Galaxy 18, 60, 500 (Rev 1.4X or below), or 512 ((HighSecurity), Rev 1.4X or below) and a Smart Power SupplyUnit (Smart PSU).The A and B terminals of JP2 on the Telecom Module must beconnected to the A and B terminals, respectively, on AB(RS485) line 1 of the control panel. The plus ‘+’ and minus ‘-‘terminals of JP2 on the Telecom Module should be connectedto either of the fused 12 volt outputs (12V1 or 12V2) on JP2 ofthe Galaxy 3A Smart PSU.

3. Wiring with a Galaxy 8, 18, 60, 500 (Rev 1.4X or below), or512 ((High Security), Rev 1.4X or below) and a Galaxy 1Amp or 3 Amp Power Supply Unit (PSU).The A and B terminals of JP2 on the Telecom Module must beconnected to the A and B terminals, respectively, on AB(RS485) line 1 of the control panel. The plus ‘+’ and minus ‘-‘terminals of JP2 on the Telecom Module should be connectedto the unfused 12 volt outputs of the PSU. These outputs willbe marked with a telephone icon.

The Telecom Module is connected to the RS485 communicationline 1 (AB line) on the Galaxy control panels with the followingexceptions,

When the Telecom Module is connected to the Galaxy controlpanel, because the module is pre-set to address 14, a keypadaddressed as 14 (E on the rotary address switch) cannot also bepresent on this line.

On the Galaxy 128, Galaxy 500, Galaxy 504 and 512 (HighSecurity), keypad E (14) is shown as address 18 on the keypaddisplay.

NOTE: When connecting the Telecom Module to the host it isimportant that the installation engineer ensures that thepower drawn by the apparatus, together with any otherauxiliary apparatus, lies within the rating of the hostsupply.

Tamper FacilityIf the tamper facility is to be used on the Telecom Module, connectthe tamper connector (JP1) as required (refer to Figure 3). Onceconnected, test that the tamper is operating correctly by creating thetamper alarm condition while in engineering mode and then exitingengineering mode.

CompatibilityThe E062 Telecom module is compatible with all versions of GalaxyGold software.

The E062 is compatible with all Galaxy 8, 18, 60, 128, 500, 504 and512 (High Security) control panels with control panel softwareversions V1.04 and above.

The Telecom Module E050 can be replaced by the E062 variant,however, an E062 can NOT be replaced by an E050.

Telecom Module E050 with software versions V2.12 and aboverecognises British Telecom Answering Service. The E062 does thisas standard.

Connection to the Public Switched TelephoneNetwork (PSTN)The Telecommunications Network Voltage (TNV) port (marked Aand B (JP7)) on the module must be permanently connected(hardwired) to the PSTN via a BT master socket (refer to Figure 4).NOTE: If the BT master socket is the newer type (NTE5), then

the connection can be carried out by an installationengineer. If the BT master socket is not an NTE5, thenthe connection must be made by the network operator.

There are two methods of connecting the Telecom Module to thePSTN:Method 1Using cable suitable for connection to 2.8mm diameter screwterminals, strip back approximately 20mm of the outer sheath andthen remove approximately 4mm of the insulation from the end ofthe wires to be connected to the Telecom Module.

WARNING: The cover of the control box must be replacedwhenever any connection to the BT master socketis completed to prevent exposure to potentiallylethal voltages from the PSTN.

Interconnection circuits should be such that the equipmentcontinues to comply with the requirements of 4.2 of EN 41003 forTNV (Telephone Network Voltage) circuits and 2.3 of EN 60950 ofSELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) circuits, after making connectionsbetween circuits.

Method 2Use a standard cable with RJ45 plug on one end plug into JP6 ofthe Telecom Module. Plug. Connect the other end of the cable tothe BT socket as instructed in method 1.

Connecting additional Telecom ApparatusA BT secondary socket, allowing additional telecom apparatus to beconnected in series with the Telecom Module, can be connected toTNV port BC, D and C (JP7 – PHONE) on Telecom Module E062(refer to Figure 4).

Connect contact 4 on the BT secondary socket to the BC terminalon the telecom module. Connect the contacts on the BT secondarysocket to the PHONE terminals (JP7) as follows:

Some secondary sockets may have mirror images of the correctPIN assignments (PIN 1 is actually PIN 6). If this is the case,connect the Telecom Module to the secondary PINs (the secondaryPINs are enclosed in brackets in Table 3).

SECTION 2: CONFIGURATIONOnce the Telecom Module has been installed, it can be configuredinto the system by powering up the Galaxy control panel, or, if thepanel is already powered up by using either; the system restartfacility (Menu option 51.17), or by exiting engineering mode.

LED1 on the module flashes continuously (ON – 0.1 seconds, OFF– 0.9 seconds), indicating that the module has configured correctlyand is communicating with the Galaxy control panel.

NOTE: Any other LED flash rate indicates that the module isnot communicating with the control panel. Refer toTable 5 LED Flash Rate Indication for additionalinformation.

SECTION 3: PROGRAMMINGThe Telecom Module is programmed from the Galaxy control panelusing menu option 56 – COMMUNICATIONS. For full programmingdetails, refer to the Galaxy Programming Manual (IP1-0027).

Enter the COMMUNICATIONS menu and program the FORMATand TRIGGERING options as required. The telephone number (TELNo. 1) and the Galaxy site account number (ACCOUNT No.) mustbe entered. However, the default values (shown in bold in Table 4) for the remaining options are usually sufficient for mostinstallations.

NOTES:1. Although this equipment can use either Loop Disconnect

or DTMF signalling, only the performance of the DTMFsignalling is subject to regulator requirements for correctoperation. It is therefore recommended that theequipment is set to use DTMF signalling for access topublic or private emergency services. DTMF signallingalso provides faster call set up.

2. Contact ID format is only available on Galaxy controlpanel software versions V1.2X and above.

3. Ensure that all telephone numbers programmed into theGalaxy are correct.

4. Both Telephone Number 1 and the account number mustbe entered, otherwise dialling cannot take place.

CAUTION: Changing the account number in the ACCOUNT No.option overwrites the individual channel accountnumbers programmed in the ACC/CHANNEL optionin the TRIGGERING menu.

The Telecom Module supports the mobile Short Messaging Service(SMS). This can be programmed via the Galaxy control panel aslong as the software contained within the control panel is V4.00 orlater.

To program the SMS features select option 17 from the TelecomCommunications menu 56.1.

The menu supports programming of:-The mobile or pager number of the recipient of the message-The number of the SMS paging centre-The SMS format and trigger events (available formats are TAP(default), UCP (SMS), UCP (Minicall) and UCP (Numeric)-The site ID used to identify the panel/site sending themessage. If the format is UCP (Numeric), then the site ID issolely numeric, and only the first four characters are sent out.-Password if required

SECTION 4: TESTINGInform the telephone number (TEL. No. 1) destination (e.g. AlarmReceiving Station or Central Station) than an engineer test is to becarried on the Telecom Module.

1. Ensure that all of the outputs to be tested are in a deactivatedstate and that all of the necessary communication options havebeen correctly programmed into the Galaxy control panel (seeSection 3).

2. Enter menu option 56 – COMMUNICATIONS – and send atest transmission by selecting the engineer test option (option8) from the TELECOM menu.

3. Test each of the channels by activating the appropriateoutputs. This can be achieved by using option 62 – FULLTEST or option 32 – TEST OUTPUTS (refer to the GalaxyProgramming Manual (IP1-0027) for further details).

4. Finally, send another engineer test transmission.

Verify that the test has been successfully received.

SECTION 5: OPERATIONRS485Under normal idle state conditions, the Telecom Module monitorsthat RS485 line. The status of the Telecom Module is indicated bythe flash rate of the LED as shown in Table 5:

DIALLINGIn both the digicom (digital communicator) and remote servicingmodes of operation, the LED flashes as the numbers are dialled.

Once the Telecom Module successfully connects to the centralstation, the transmission of the alarm information is also indicatedby the LED flashing, or remaining steady during SIA, AlarmMonitoring and Galaxy Gold communication.

LINE MONITORING

The Telecom Module monitors the following conditions on thetelephone line:

Loss of d.c. line voltage (less than 3 V d.c.) Loss of dial tone Pre-dial ringing

Each of these functions can be individually selected on Galaxycontrol panel software V1.04 and above.

When any of these conditions are detected, a LINE FAIL messageis sent to the Galaxy control panel and stored in the event log. If thesystem is unset, the TELECOM FAILURE message appears on thekeypad display and a local alarm is activated.If a LINE FAIL occurs while the system is in the set state, theTELECOM FAILURE message will be displayed on the keypad whenthe system is unset. This will be accompanied by a local alarm. Analarm condition arising during a LINE FAIL overrides any programmedBELL DELAY and activates the bell immediately.

SIGNALLING

When a command is received from the Galaxy control panel to senda message, the Telecom Module snatches the telephone line, goesoff hook, and then dials the programmed telephone number.

After a successful communication the LED will be illuminated forapproximately three seconds, the Telecom Module then releasesthe telephone line and reconnects any serially connectedequipment. This procedure is repeated for the second telephonenumber if the RECEIVER option has been programmed as DUAL.

The Telecom Module snatches and holds the line until a successfulattempt has been made or until the programmed number of repeatattempts has been tried (a maximum of five, see GalaxyProgramming Manual: Menu option 56.1.11). If the communicationattempt is unsuccessful, the LED flashes rapidly for three seconds.The Telecom Module then waits for a short period before rediallingthe number (or the second telephone number if the RECEIVERoption has been programmed as DUAL or ALT). If the programmednumber of dialling attempts is unsuccessful a FAIL TOCOMMUNICATE message is sent to the Galaxy control panel. Thealarms that were to be communicated are erased from the bufferand no further attempts are made for this event.

NOTE: Differences apply to Telecom Module software versionsbelow 2.1X. After the programmed number of communicationsattempts, the module will send the FAIL TOCOMMUNICATE message to the event log and then trydialling a further two times. If, at the end of this, nosuccessful communications have been made, theTelecom Module will not make any more communicationsattempts for two hours (from the time of the firstunsuccessful attempt).

REMOTE SERVICING (Using Galaxy Gold)

Galaxy Gold software allows the Galaxy control panel to be fullyprogrammed from a remote PC. When complete the Galaxyprogramming can be copied onto the remote PC and overwritten tothe Galaxy site at a later date if required.

Remote servicing is initiated by either the Galaxy Gold software orby Galaxy control panels with software versions V1.04 (or above).Refer to the Programming Manual for instructions.

The Telecom Module automatically answers the incoming telephonecall after a pre-determined number of rings. Once all the securitychecks have been satisfied, the Telecom Module connects theremote PC to the Galaxy control panel allowing remote servicing tobegin.

SECTION 6: REGULATIONSThe Telecom Module is approved for connection to direct lines ofthe PSTN and PBX exchanges (with or without secondary proceedindication). Both Loop Disconnect (Pulse) and Tone dialling aresupported.

It should be noted the Telecom Module is not suitable as anextension to a payphone.

The Telecom Module has been approved for the used of thefollowing facilities:• Auto-dialling• Auto-answering• Auto-clearing• Modem communications• Series connection• Operation with Call Process Monitor (CPM) tone recognition• Multiple repeat attempts

Any other usage will invalidate the approval of the Telecom Moduleif, as a result, it then ceases to comply with standards against whichapproval was granted.

Approval of the Telecom Module is also invalidated if it is used withinternal software or subjected to any hardware modification notauthorised by Ademco Microtech.

It is possible to simultaneously connect a number of items to oneline of the PSTN. The limit is determined by summing the RingerEquivalence Number (REN) shown on each item of apparatus,ensuring that the sum of RENs is not more than four.NOTE: The REN of the Telecom Module is one (1).Assume that all BT equipment has a REN of one unless otherwisemarked.

More than one item of series apparatus may be connected to theTelecom Module TNV ports marked C and D. This is limited bysumming the Series Equivalent Number (SEN) shown on each itemof series connected apparatus, ensuring that the sum of the SENsis not more than one (1). The total series resistance, includingcabling, must not exceed 50 Ohms.1. The SEN of the Telecom Module is 0.3.2. Nominal series resistance is 90 milliohms.3. Nominal insertion loss is 0.1 dB.

Note: Difficulties may be experienced when making calls fromother apparatus if the total SEN value approaches one orthe total series resistance 50 Ohms.If such difficulties are experienced, please consult theTelecom Module installer or supplier, not BT.

It is recommended that the PSTN should have the followingfacilities:1. Outgoing calls only (when used as dialler only)2. Direct exchange3. Pulse or tone dialling

PRIVATE BRANCH EXCHANGE (PBX)CONNECTIONThe Telecom Module is only approved for use with BABT approvedPBXs. The correct operation of the Telecom Module cannot beguaranteed under all possible conditions of connection tocompatible PBXs.

When connected to a PBX, the Telecom Module can beprogrammed to detect an additional dial tone. Inserting a hash (#)into the programmed telephone number, causes the TelecomModule to pause for up to 15 seconds until a dial tone is detected.Inserting an asterisk (*) between digits in the programmed numberresults in a two second pause between the dialling of the digits.
