A typical synopsis often tries to achieve the following:“Who?” - Who’s the main character? And what does he want? What’s he doing? Is there anybody else involved?“What?” - What’s the conflict? Who’s stopping the protagonist? What’s in his way?“Where?” - Where’s it set? “When?” - And in what period?

“How?” - How does the protagonist try to get what he wants, what happens and how does it end?

TasksSelect and analyze the synopsis of 4 popular films similar to your chosen genre.

Based on your analysis of synopsis collected, what do you believe to be some of the common conventions of synopsis similar in genre to your own?

Possible Presentation of Findings – (select one of the following)

1. Short written blog entry 2. 1-2 minute video or audio response

3. Titling Research (http://www.artofthetitle.com)

Given that the titling of your opening sequence is likely to feature quite heavily, it is most important that you gain a genuine appreciation for the importance of film titling.

TasksConcentrating solely on titling, screen grab the first 9 frames of the opening title sequence of 4 films of a similar genre to your own. Produce a presentation that answers the following:

1. What did you discover regarding the following; duration, speed and order of titles, the use of colour and font style, the decision to use titles over images or black and/or the decision to use minimum titling.

2. Overall how did each film try to set for audiences, the mood, tone and atmosphere and possible storyline?

3 Overall, to what extent did you discover a strong relationship between titling and what you already know to be the common codes and conventions of your chosen genre/sub genre?

Presentation of Findings (select one of the following)

1. 2-3 minutes short film using a combination of audio/visual presentation and moments from relevant films

2. A maximum 3 slide Prezi presentation – (level 4- include graphs)

4. Opening Sequence Analysis (minus the use of titles)

It is the expectation of the examiner that you will have studied very carefully the content and form of the opening 2 minutes of films similar in genre and possibly similar in style and synopsis to your own.

Task

Select and analyze 3 popular films similar to your chosen genre. Taking each film in turn, answer the following questions.

1. What generic codes and conventions are established within the first opening 2 minutes?

2. How does the opening title sequence try to appeal and build audience’s expectations?

3. How much of the storyline are audiences afforded in the first 2 minutes?

4. How are the combined techniques of editing, cameraframing /movement, mise en scene, sound and SFX, used to help set any of the following, mood, tone, setting of where the story might unravel, character’s and/or possible storyline
