To better prepare students for college, the District reviews courses to ensure that high school courses meetUniversity of California requirements
Maintaining up-to-date textbooks and instructional materials
Maintaining reduced class sizes of no more than 20 students per class in kindergarten through third grade
Maintaining and expanding after-school tutoring programs that help students with their homework and keep them out of trouble
Providing training and support for teachers so they have access to current information, methods and technology
Instituting reading, math and science programs that have steadily increased test scores for elementary and middle school children
Providing more counselors to help middle school and high school students succeed
Expanding a new mathematics program that has greatly improved scores at elementary and middle schools
Restoring and maintaining programs in music and the arts
Providing more electives and advanced placement courses so more Oakland students can qualify for college admissions
Maintaining qualified school librarians and library services for children
Reducing class sizes for fourth through eighth grades
Maintaining the District’s adult education programs, helping displaced workers to get job training, recent immigrants to learn English, and others to return to school to get their diplomas
Maintaining the programs that have resulted in Oakland becoming the most improved large urban school district in the state for the last two years where scores are available
Adding security officers at school sites to ensure the safety of children not only during regular school hours, but while attending after-school programs as well

An exemption is available for low-income residents to make sure this tax is not a burden on those who cannot afford it
This money is needed to maintain the improvement Oakland has made in being able to attract and retain well-trained, professional, credentialed
teachers
Oakland’s school parcel tax provides more than 20 million dollars for our schools each year. Without this measure the parcel tax will expire and our schools will
be forced to make deep cuts to core classroom instruction
This money is needed if our schools are to keep up with technology both now and in the future
An independent oversight committee will make sure that the money is spent properly
Without the parcel tax there will be no money available for many of the successful programs to reduce the high school drop-out rate
None of this money will go to pay administrators
After years of problems, student achievement is improving; this measure is needed if the progress is to continue
Without the parcel tax, class sizes will increase for children in kindergarten through third grade
This measure is supported by teachers, principals, business leaders, and city leaders
