THE PROBLEMSEngine Wear — Automotiveexperts agree that dirt is the numberone cause of engine wear. At firstglance, it does not seem possible.Engine dirt particles are so small —mere dust specks — and an engineis a highly sophisticated piece ofmachinery, crafted from the mostdurable metal alloys. How can theseminute particles bring down such ahigh-tech giant? The answer lies inthe fact that dirt particles areextremely abrasive. They consist ofrazor-like flakes of road dust andairborne grit drawn into the enginethrough the air intake, as well asmanufacturing scarf and wear metalparticles generated inside theengine. These particles are carriedby the oil into the precision clear-ances between bearings and othermoving parts. Once they work inbetween these parts, they grind andgouge surfaces, altering clear-ances, and generating

more abrasive debris. As this wearcycle continues, precision componentsbecome progressively sloppy andfatigued until they fail altogether.

Oil Degradation — In addition tophysically assaulting engine com-ponents, dirt and other contami-nants work to degrade the oil thatprovides vital engine lubrication.Sooty particles generated duringcombustion can be forced pastpiston rings and into the oil. Theseparticles act like tiny sponges,absorbing critical additives andshortening oil life. Soot alsowreaks havoc with viscosity bycausing oil to thicken. And in thepresence of moisture, common by-products of combustion will reactchemically to produce corrosiveand rust-producing acids.

Compared to microscopic dirt particles, your engine is a Goliath,roaring with heat and energy as it converts fuel into rawhorsepower. But despite all this power, your engineis extremely vulnerable to the threat of microscopicengine dirt. Most conventional filters on the marketuse a thin layer of porous filter paper astheir filtration media, which compromisestheir ability to catch fine particles. In addi-tion, these filters have almost no extendedcleaning ability since their media have alow capacity for storing dirt.

Because of their limited filtering area,most conventional paper filters displaygood flow characteristics but arerestricted in their capacity and longevity.

They become obstructed relativelyquickly, opening the relief valve andallowing unfiltered oil into the engine.Their lightweight construction alsomakes them susceptible to degradation.

Full-flow filters install directly into the line of oil circulation. The full flowof oil passes through the filter as the oil journeys between the oil pumpand engine. A full-flow filter must be capable of removing and holdingcontaminants without obstructing oil flow to the engine.

WHY ANOTHER FILTER? Even the best full-flowfilter can’t do it allAny full-flow filter must allow oil topass through it quickly to keep theengine from starving for oil. Advancesin auto technology and more com-pact engine designs place increasingdemands on these filters; to keepfrom creating a circulation bottle-neck, they filter out only the coarserparticles, and feature relief valvesthat open when the engine’s demandfor lubrication can’t be ignored.

But the smallest grit that passesthrough— road dust, manufacturingscarf, and engine-metal flake in the5- to 20-micron range— accounts forup to 60% of all engine wear. Thesemicroscopic particles closely matchthe precision clearances betweencritical engine components; theycan enter the spaces between bear-ings, rings, and other componentsto damage metal surfaces, altertolerances, fatigue components, andgenerate additional debris.

Automobile engines are also sus-ceptible to damage related to waterformation, something a full-flowfilter is powerless against. Waterenters the oil either as a blowbycombustion product of fuel ignitionor as condensed moisture from airdrawn into the engine through thecarburetor. Water causes metal sur-faces to rust; it also reacts with otherblowby contaminants to producecorrosive acids that attack the engine,contributing to further friction, wear,debris, and oil degradation.

The AMSOIL Solution –By-Pass FiltrationUnlike a full-flow filter, theAMSOIL By-Pass Filter is sit-uated outside the main line ofoil circulation; it taps into theline to bleed off and cleanonly a portion of the oil at a time.The AMSOIL By-Pass Filter retainsthe oil longer and does a more thor-ough job of removing contaminantswithout obstructing flow. You stillneed a full-flow filter, of course,because oil must circulate continu-ously. But with an AMSOIL By-Pass Filter drawing 10% of yoursystem's capacity, all the oil in asix-quart system will be filtered toanalytical purity in about five min-utes, at an average engine speedequivalent to 45 mph.

The differences between AMSOILBy-Pass Filters and others are theunique design of the filtering mediaand the patented construction of thefilter element. Our high-capacityfiltration medium is a special blendof virgin wood and cotton fibers

formed into discs, stacked, andcompressed. The center tube is allsteel, perforated for oil flow, andwrapped with a fine mesh cottonscreen. All dirt particles down toless than one micron in size aretrapped, and the medium's thirstycellulose fibers can remove up to apint of water. Channeling is elimi-nated with the inclusion of a hy-draulic follower plate activated by asophisticated internal pressure system.

Each filter consists of a mount-ing unit with a spin-onfiltering cartridge, con-nected by hoses to engineports as illustrated. Theentire assembly is lessbulky than other bypasssystems, and fits easilyinto cramped enginecompartments. Changingthe spin-on filter issimple . . . no more soggy,dripping elements slidingout of tilted cannisters!

The AMSOIL Dual Remote Oil Fil-tration System replaces the standardfull-flow oil filter with a combina-tion full-flow/bypass system, usinga remote mounting assembly.

The mount couples an AMSOILSuper Duty Oil Filter with anAMSOIL Spin-On By-Pass Filter;it takes oil from the engine andreturns it without the use of multi-ple fittings or extra return holes inthe oil pan or valve cover.
