Closure of main road set to cause major disruption

A road closure is set to cause major disruption to commuters after the Bank Holiday weekend.Darlington Borough Council (DBC) will close the 1.8 mile stretch of road between Shildon and Heighington for surfacing works on Tuesday 30th May. DBC anticipate that the closure - between Future Business Park in Shildon and Heigh-ington Bypass roundabout - will be effective for ap-proximately two weeks, however Arriva, who’s services will be affected by the closure, have been informed that work may in fact take as little as three days.

For drivers needing to access Aycliffe Industrial Estate or Darlington, alter-native routes will be sign-posted via the A68, A688 and A6072, while access to Redworth and Heighington Village will be from the south only.During the period of closure Arriva’s Service 1/1B will divert between Hilsdon Drive and Heigh-ington via Middridge and School Aycliffe, non-stop. However the X1 will divert between Burtree Gate and Tindale Crescent via the A68 and will not serve Shildon during this time.Tony Batty, Head of Opera-tions North commented,

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however regret-tably these circumstances are beyond our control.“Arriva will be putting information on the stops affected.”Tony Batty, Head of Opea-tions, North at Arriva said: “We apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, however regret-tably these circumstances are beyond our control. Arriva will be putting information on the stops affected and I understand Durham County Council provide a Link2 bus service for those areas left without access to a bus service.”Link2 is a pre-bookable bus service for people making journeys (up to five miles) where there is no other suitable bus. The service can be booked up to an hour before a journey. For details of the Link2 bus service, visit durham.gov.uk and enter ‘Link2’ in the search bar at the top of the page.

Would like to wish Laurence good luck in his

new job in Consett. He will be sorely missed.

Best wishes to him for the future.

Bishop Auckland constituency candidates in the general election engage in lively debate at St John’s Church, Shildon last Friday.

critical of the proposed changes by the Conserva-tives to the free school meals policy introduced by his party when they were part of the coalition gov-ernment. He restated his Party’s contention that only the Lib Dems could offer the kind of opposition required in coming years. Chaired by Rev’d David Tomlinson, questions from the floor were collated before the formal part of the evening began with those attending submitting questions on entry. A question from Lisa Shaw, a teaching assistant, drew much comment as the candidates unanimously condemned the handling of the issue, of the terms and conditions of teaching assistants in the county, by Labour’s Durham County Council. A number of questions were tabled expressing concerns about the NHS, the decline of services in Bishop Auckland and the financial problems at Dar-lington Memorial. Helen Goodman made clear her conviction that austeri-ty measures were to blame whilst Christopher Adams, who does consultancy work with the NHS, was critical of inefficiencies within the service. The event was recorded by Bishop FM and streamed

through social media so those unable to attend in person could listen in to the debate. Following the formal part of the evening a buffet, provided by the County Durham Residents’ Asso-ciation, was served while the candidates mingled informally taking individual questions. Rev’d David commented that the evening was a great success, energising debate, and giving local people a chance to speak

directly to those for whom they will be voting on June 8th. “I am delighted”, he added, “with the support the event received and the enthusiasm and the civility of the debate.” The BNP candidate Adam Walker was not invited, with the Revd. David citing safeguarding concerns fol-lowing Mr Walker’s convic-tion in 2012 for verbally abusing three boys and slashing their bike tyres with a sheath knife.

Youthy members relax on the grass at Lightwater Valley.

Youthy take over theme park

Saint John’s Youthy joined young people from across the diocese of Durham on Saturday at ‘The Big Night Out’. The diocese, along with the ‘Lads and Girls brigade’, had taken over the Lightwa-ter Valley theme park near Ripon for Christian youth to come together for fun, fel-lowship, and learning. With every ride in the park open, the 35 Shildon young people were soon scattered across the site laughing and jumping on and off rounda-bouts, roller coasters and other rides.

During the shared picnic Youthy leader Neil Cleasby found himself nominated for a challenge on stage. Much to his consterna-tion he discovered the challenge involved having Haribo sweets stuck to his face with peanut butter as the adhesive. Despite a peanut butter covered face, Shildon Youthy were runners up, and Mr Cleasby headed for

a washroom. At 8pm a concert complete with lasers and a live band came on stage and the young people enjoyed dancing and singing along. Arriving back in Shildon at 10pm one young person asked, “I had an awesome time, can we go again next week?” Saint John’s Youthy meets at 7pm on Sunday nights at the church.

Richard Wearmouth and friends will be taking on the Coast to Coast cycling challenge to raise funds for the chemotherapy ward at University Hospital of North Durham.

Cancer survivor Richard fund raising to give something back

Four Shildon lads will be joined by eleven other friends from around the country at Whitehaven on Friday 2nd June as they prepare to take part in the 135-mile Coast to Coast cycle ride to raise funds for the Chemotherapy Ward of University Hospital of North Durham. The fundraising effort was organised by one of the Shildon riders, Richard Wearmouth, while recu-perating from cancer treat-ment in August last year.Richard said: “I was diag-nosed with Stage 4 Non Hodgkin Lymphoma in February 2016 and the cancer was fairly well advanced so I was lucky, very lucky. “The treatment involved intensive chemotherapy which was provided at the University Hospital of North Durham Chemotherapy De-partment. “They were amazing, and it is surprising how busy the ward is, with people of all ages being treated for various types of cancer. “My chemo treatment lasted three months and they looked after me well.

“The rest of the treat-ment included a month of radiotherapy once a day then the worst part of all, an autologous bone marrow transplant - meaning that my own stem cells were collected in advance and returned at a later stage.“They were used to replace stem cells that had been damaged by the high doses of chemotherapy needed for the treatment. “The reason for this sec-ondary treatment was the cancer had spread to my bones and as I was young and fit enough, and not many people are, the doctors decided to throw everything at me to ensure I was totally cured from cancer.”The idea for the bike ride came in the pub, joked Richard, whilst on a night out with many close friends “to celebrate my lack of hair, body fat and getting the all clear”.Since the ride was first set in motion, Richard admits that he is not as fit as he originally felt after the successful chemotherapy, “so it will be a real test of endurance to keep going”.

And the ride is likely to test the endurance of most of the participants, added Richard: “Most of us haven’t been for a bike ride anything over 10 miles since about 20 years ago, so this should be fun.”The Coast to Coast ride begins in the west at White-haven on Friday 2nd June. “By the end of the first day we will reach Penrith,” said Richard. “The second night we’ll rest in Allenheads and we’ll finish with a couple of beers at the Yacht Club in Sunderland.“We are raising money specifically for the Chemo-therapy Ward as it is so busy and they did a great job of looking after me.“As I am one of the lucky ones who has been cured I thought it would be good to give something back.“The original fundrais-ing goal was £200 but we reached that in the first three days so figured £2,000 was a manageable figure, especially if we have the good folk of Shildon behind us.”To donate, visit justgiving.com and search for ‘Richard Wearmouth’.

A Shildon man has pleaded guilty to possessing a Class A drug, obstructing a con-stable and using threaten-ing or abusive behaviour after he was found col-lapsed in a bus shelter.Matthew Marshall, of Primrose Drive, admitted consuming alcohol and cocaine hours before making threats to hospital staff.Officers found cocaine on the 20 year-old, who was inside the Shildon shelter on 29th April.Magistrates in Newton

Aycliffe heard how he was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital where he became abusive towards nursing staff, held a metal chair in the air and strug-gled as he was arrested. He told police he had drunk vodka and taken cocaine. In mitigation, Andrew Clinton said his client could not recall the episode but accepted what happened. He was given a two-month community order, a two-month curfew from 7am to 7pm and was ordered to pay £170 in costs.

Community Choir sings in fundraiser

Dear Editor,

A plea to parents and carers in Shildon.

In recent weeks there has been several inci-dents of vandalism, damage to property and suspected underage drinking happening at the Scouts Field.

This facility is maintained by volunteers on a very tight budget to keep the costs of pro-viding football training to a minimum. Un-fortunately funds must be spent on repairing damage to the facility, which is totally un-necessary.

Can we ask that if you are aware that your child is going to the Scouts Field, warn them that the police have been informed and it is an offence to enter the ground without permis-sion.

Thank you in advance.Shildon AFC Community Football Centre

Roller skater Joseph receives Contribution to Sport Award

Joseph Kearney, a member of Spectrum (North East) Roller Skating Club won Best of Darlington Award for Contribution to Sport on Friday 19th May. There were inspirational stories and amazing dem-onstrations during a night of celebration at Darling-ton Dolphin Centre.Joseph (16), who is from Darlington, went along to roller skating lessons hosted by Spectrum Roller Skating Club’s coach Tracy Stevens at Planet Leisure almost three years ago. “I was a little surprised to have a teenage boy join in as it is predominantly females who take up the sport but I was keen to encourage Joseph as he showed enthusiasm and talent right from day one,” said Tracy, who nominated Joseph for the award.“He was eager and ambi-tious and was able to ac-

complish new moves very quickly,” said Tracy. “In a short time he worked through grades 1-5 and has lately been assessed by judges to gain grade 6, 7 and 8.”Joseph took part in local competitions and per-formances earlier this year, attending his first national competition with his skating partner, Nicola Stevens, where the pair came 4th.“I nominated Joseph not only because of his deter-mination, dedication and contribution to artistic roller skating but also for his commitment to the club,” said Tracy. “During the three years, Joseph has joined in with paired work, group work and has helped to coach others. “Most significantly for Joseph he has helped with fundraising,” added Tracy. “Although he initially

wasn’t entirely comfort-able with bag-packing - speaking to the general public and advertising the club, he persevered, gained confidence and found he was actually very good at it!“Joseph has gained so much from taking part in physical activity and being part of a club. “He has grown in confi-dence and is a role model for other boys taking part in artistic roller skating.”Spectrum Roller Skating Club have a facebook page which is regularly updated. They have summer holiday activities planned and from June 10th and skate at Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre on Satur-days and Sundays from 2.30pm. For more details about learning to roller skate contact Tracy on 07891 461958.
