Walking

Fuqua is about a 15 minute walk from The Lofts or

Trinity Commons, or about a 30 minute walk from

Station 9, Berkshire Ninth, or Crescent Main.

Student quote: “When the weather is nice, I love walking to/from school because I get to

listen to music or call a friend while enjoying a stroll through beautiful West Campus. And it’s

good to be able to fit some exercise into my busy day!”

3

Biking

Fuqua is about a 5-10 minute bike ride from Trinity Commons

or The Lofts, and about a 15 minute bike ride from

Station 9/Berkshire Ninth/Crescent Main.

• Fuqua has bike racks at both the Science Drive entrance and the Fuqua

Drive circle– no need to walk from a parking lot!

• Worried about getting sweaty on your ride? There are men’s and women’s

locker rooms on the ground floor of Fuqua, below the Fox Center. The

locker rooms have showers, towels, and cubbies to store toiletries in. They

also have clothing racks and a clothes steamer for when you need to look

sharp! Swipe your Duke card for locker room access.

• Anyone can use the bike racks, but registered bike commuters can

request a bike locker (covered outdoor bike storage) from the Fuqua

BMO– they are first come, first serve, so get your request in early!

4

Scooter or Motorcycle

• Scooters can park right outside of school at the bike racks, or

in the designated parking spaces in the Fuqua lot (new for fall

2015)

– Scooters do not need permits in order to park on Duke campus, but

they must still be registered with Duke Parking & Transportation.

• Motorcycles can only park in the designated spaces in the

Fuqua lot (new for fall 2015)

– To park a motorcycle on Duke campus, you must purchase a

motorcycle permit, which costs $66 a year (permit is free if the owner

already has a car permit.)

*Scooters are a great option for international students,

because a US driver’s license is not required for scooters with

an engine smaller than 50 cubic cm.*

5

Duke Bus System

• The Duke bus system offers FREE transportation for Duke students and

staff around/near campus. Hours of operation vary by route.

• Download the TransLoc app to track Duke buses in real time.

• Popular routes for Fuqua students:

– H5 bus• Picks up/drops off at Erwin Square, right by S9/Crescent Main/Berkshire 9th.

• Picks up/drops off by Fuqua at the corner of Fuqua Drive & Towerview Rd.

• Total trip time to/from Fuqua is about 25 minutes.

• Runs from 7:15am to 6:12pm, Monday-Friday.

– LaSalle Loop bus• Picks up/drops off at The Heights at LaSalle and The Belmont complexes.

• Picks up/drops off by Fuqua at the corner of Fuqua Drive & Towerview Road.

• Total trip time to/from Fuqua is about 5-10 minutes.

• Runs from 7am to 11pm, Monday-Friday.

*Need to get home after the buses stop running? Call the Duke Van service.

6

NEW: Bull City Connector Bus • The Bull City Connector is a free bus operated by the GoDurham municipal

transit system, and connects Duke’s campus with downtown Durham.

• For the 2015-2016 school year, they are evaluating a proposed change

that would bring the bus route to Erwin Square (meaning it would service

Station 9/Crescent Main/Berkshire Ninth residents), and extending it to

drop people off closer to Fuqua.

• Benefits: the BCC bus runs earlier/later in the day than the H5 bus, and

also runs on Saturdays.

• If you don’t plan to have a car at Fuqua, please take their quick survey by

6/10/15 to indicate your support for these changes– which, if approved,

should hopefully be in place by August 2015. The more positive feedback

they get, the better chance we have of getting these changes made! Also

please comment that you are a Fuqua student and would like to see the

route extended to drop people off at the corner of Circuit Drive and

Towerview Road (right by Fuqua’s entrance.)

7

Driving: The Basics

• Students commuting by car MUST purchase a

parking permit each academic year. Online permit

purchases begin June 17th, 2015 at

http://parking.duke.edu.

• Students can either purchase a single-driver

parking permit, or set up a carpool or rideshare to

save a significant amount of money on parking, as

well as secure a better parking spot.

– Please see instructions on how to purchase a

carpool/rideshare permit as this is a slightly different

process.

8

Driving: Single Driver

• For First Year students at Fuqua who do not carpool or

rideshare, the parking lot options are Blue Zone and Green

Zone.

– Blue Zone annual permit price for 2015-2016: $354

– Green Zone annual permit price for 2015-2016: $171

• These lots are not adjacent to Fuqua, and the closest

spaces fill up early in the day. You will need to budget ~13

minutes to walk from your car to school.

– Students can also board the Duke PR1: Basset-Research bus

when it stops at the Science Drive entrance to Fuqua and get

dropped off closer to their cars.

9

Driving: Carpool/Rideshare (1 of 2)

Set up a carpool or rideshare to get a better parking spot

AND save a ton of money on your permit!• First Year carpool and rideshare groups are assigned to the Faculty Club

parking lot.

– Benefit: a much shorter walk to school (about 8 minutes) than Blue or Green

Zone!

– Participants also get 2 free daily parking passes each month for days they need

to drive alone.

• Carpool = 3 or 4 participants

– THREE participants pay $6.25 monthly per person

– FOUR participants = FREE parking permit!

• Rideshare = 2 participants

– Each participant splits the $402 annual permit cost

10

Driving: Carpool/Rideshare (2 of 2)• Note: all carpool and rideshare participants must own a car to be eligible.

• Fuqua carpools and rideshares are first handled by our Building

Management Office before being processed by Duke Parking. Anyone

interested in setting up a rideshare or carpool for the 2015-2016 academic

year should contact Fuqua BMO to start the process.

– Tip: this is good to do now if you already know that you’ll be

carpooling/ridesharing with roommates or a significant other.

• Most Fuquans who want to do a carpool or rideshare set it up with section-

mates, since you will have matching schedules for Fall 1 & 2. However,

you won’t know your section until orientation. Therefore, any student who

purchases a parking permit and then decides to set up a carpool or

rideshare can get a refund (full or partial, depending on timing) on their

permit purchase, even after the school year has started.

11

Misc. Parking Notes• After-Hours Parking: many Duke parking lots are available for parking after

5pm. Students who do not own a parking permit can also park in these lots

after 5pm if they obtain a free night (NGT) permit. You can procure an NGT

permit for free on the parking website and review details on which lots offer

after-hours access.

• Parking Tickets: our beautiful, historic campus means that parking is

somewhat limited, so Duke strongly enforces parking rules! If you park

somewhere that you don’t have a permit for, there is a serious chance that

you will be ticketed or towed. And tickets aren’t cheap– usually around $100.

Or if you decide to “create your own spot” in a lot, you might find yourself

towed, even if you have a permit for that lot. Permit enforcement checks

regularly happen in all Fuqua lots (Blue Zone, Green Zone, Faculty Club,

751) during regular school hours, so do not park in a lot that you don’t

have a permit for! Note that Blue Zone permit holders will also need to

vacate their cars for certain football games, or risk being towed or ticketed.

12

Duke Vans

A great way to get home if you’re at school after the bus has

stopped running, or if your carpool/rideshare has already left.

– Duke Vans is a shared van service that will pick you up at the Fuqua

Drive circle and drop you off at home (no bars, sorry!) anywhere within

the 2-mile service boundary, between the hours of 5pm and 7am.

– Put in a request by calling them or using the RideCell app

• Save their number in your phone: 919-684-2020

• Download the RideCell app to your phone

– Usual wait time is 15 minutes maximum.

– Duke Vans can also take you to your car in the Blue or Green Zone

parking lots if you don’t want to walk to your car alone at night.

13

Zagster Campus Bike Share System

• Membership costs $20 a year, and rides under 3

hours are free to members. After that, the hourly rate

is $2, with a maximum per ride cost of $10.

• The closest Zagster bike location to Fuqua is on

Towerview Drive, across from the Wilson Gym parking

lot.

• Download the app and register with Zagster to get

access to the bikes.

14

Perks for Alternative Transportation

Commuters!

• If you register with Duke Parking & Transportation as an

“alternative transportation commuter” (either as a biker or a

carpooler/ridesharer), you get 2 FREE daily parking passes

each month for days you need to drive alone to campus. – Can also purchase up to 20 daily parking passes each month for $4 each

• Bike commuters can request a bike locker (covered outdoor

bike storage) from Fuqua BMO.

• All alternative transportation commuters at Fuqua (bus, walk,

bike, scooter/motorcycle, or carpool/rideshare) get invited to

special thank-you events from the MBAA.

15

Ways to Get Around Durham/Triangle Area:

• Uber or Lyft

– Great for getting to/from bars– be safe and don’t drive.

– New to Uber or Lyft? Register using links above and get a FREE ride!

• GoDurham/GoTriangle Local & Regional Bus System

– Duke students get a GoPass to ride Durham and Triangle area buses

for FREE. Register in person at the Duke Parking & Transportation

office, or when Duke P&T visits Fuqua in the fall (date TBD).

• Enterprise Car Share

– Short-term, hourly car rental service which is good for running errands

around town. You can find cars at 18 locations around campus.

• RDU Airport Taxi Service

– More expensive than Uber/Lyft (about $35 from Station 9), but worth it

if you have an early morning flight since you can reserve in advance.
