    Equity Pick Up

Business ContextAccording to the regulation of Federal Reserve of the US, all domestic bank holding

companies should prepare two reports. One of the reports is called FR Y 9C, which is the

traditional consolidation financial statement. Another is called FR Y 9LP, which is a standalone

    parent-company-only financial statement.

Based on FR Y 9LP (parent-company-only statements) the top of the holding parent needs toidentify income and investment in subsidiaries that are generated from direct subsidiaries by

type: bank subsidiaries, non-bank subsidiaries, and bank holding company subsidiaries.

Proper application of the equity method in the preparation of financial statement for parent

only reporting should result in reported income that is attributed to direct subsidiaries. The

income from direct subsidiaries should include the pick up from its own direct children.

    Equity Pick Up

Why introduce Equity Pick Up in BPCStandard functionality in BPC does not distinguish a direct subsidiary from an indirect

subsidiary, therefore losing the visibility of the relationship that a parent has with its direct

subsidiaries. The application of the equity method in BPC will incorrectly report the income

from indirect child C at parent A as non-bank income where it should correctly be recorded as

bank income, since the direct subsidiary B is a bank type.

To summarize, equity pick-up (EPU) aims at re-evaluating investments made in subsidiaries

by making a comparison between the book value of an investment, and the subsidiarys total

    equity.

    Equity Pick Up

ExampleAs an example, suppose a holding entity into a subsidiary, which is 80% owned. The original

    equity would be 1000 USD.

Years later, the subsidiary entitys total equity fluctuated due to accumulated profits (or losses).

As a result, the total equity may vary from original investment amount. Now, assuming that the

subsidiary total equity is 1500 USD, then increased equity amount is 500 USD.

The holding would only own 80% of the subsidiary, and the remaining 20% would be owned by

another entity. The calculation would become:

    Debit Credit

    Investment in Sub 500 Equity Pick Up (500 x 80%) = 400

    Non-controlling interest (500 x 20%) = 100

    Equity Pick Up

Difference between EPU and standard consolidation functions in BPC

    Equity Pick Up Consolidation

    Ownership Using the direct ownership

    percentage between theparent entity and

    subsidiary entity

    Using the ownership

percentage between therelated entity and the

    group it belongs to

Posting Result The EPU will pick up theincome from the

    subsidiary entity and will

    post the result to the

    parent entity

    The entity member will be

    kept unchanged

    The EPU calculation is

    group-irrelevant, so the

result will be posted to a

    non-group member

    The consolidation is

    group-relevant, so the

result will be posted to the

    group members the

    entities belong to
