Orienteeringif you’re planning a trip outside, why not see if it has a

permanent orienteering course (p.o.c.)?

orienteering is a fun way to turn a walk into achallenge. you follow a fixed course on a map.

the course is laid out using numbered markerslike the one shown here. the letters are usedto prove that you found the correct place.

MANY SITES OFFER A RANGE OFDIFFERENT COURSES TO SUITEVERYONE. some are as shortas a few hundred metres.

courses are graded by colour.the easiest (WHITE) ARE NOLONGER THAN 2.5km (1.5 mILES).

why not devise your own coursearound your garden, outdoorspace or house? You’ll needto make markers like the oneshown above to mark theroute, and some kind of map.WRITE NUMBERS ON YOUR MAPTO MARK OUT THE ROUTE.

what is orienteering?

is it difficult?

not going out?

where can i do it?

the five nearest courses to surbiton high are at:

Wimbledon ParkMorden Hall ParkNonsuch Park, SuttonHorton Country Park, EpsomEsher Common

Alphabet Soup

Measure It!

for 2 or more players

the first player thinks of a food beginning with ‘a’, andthen says “For lunch, I ate... an apple” (for example)

The second player things of a food beginning with ‘b’ andcontinues, saying “for lunch, i ate an apple and... abaguette”.

the next player might then say “for lunch, i ate anapple, a banana and... a curry” (’c’ for ‘curry’)

continue adding more items of food that begin with d, e,f, g... and so on.

For the letter ‘x’, your item only needs to contain ‘x’anywhere in the word (e.g. o tail soup).

if you say the wrong thing or can’t remember somethingon the list, you’re out of the game!

see who can stay in the game the longest.

try playing again but change the topic to places (”onholiday, I travelled to...”) or objects.

x

for 2 or more players

you will need a tape measure and/or weighing scales.

one person chooses a target weight or length, such as:* Something that weighs 500 grammes, or* something that is 27cm long, or* something that has a circumference of 45cm

everyone then gets 2 minutes to find something thatthey think matches this target.

the person who is closest to the target is the winnerof that round.

Sleeping Bag Race

If you are able to make this ahead of time, cut a 6-inchhole into one end of a piece of strong plywood.alternatively, improvise by using a thick piece ofcardboard.

prop up one end of the board by a few inches. Now see ifyou can throw beanbags into the hole.

If you have enough beanbags, or can make some quickly, give each team 3 or 4 each. score 1 point for each bagthat goes through the hole. play as many rounds asyou wish.

blow up your inflatable swimming pool rings. use themas giant rings and try to throw them over the headsof your campmates!

if it’s not muddy outside, use your sleeping bags as ifthey were sacks for a sack race. maybe you could setup a simple circuit or obstacle course?

Word by Worda game for 3 or more players

one person is the ‘guesser’, the others are the cluegivers.

the clue givers think of a famous person, place orthing. ( if you have asuitable board game, such as ‘taboo’ or ‘pictionary’that has similar questions, you can use those too.)

the clue givers have to build a question that gives theanswer by saying one word at a time, taking turns.

so, if there were 3 clue givers and they are trying todescribe ‘orange’ to the guesser, it might go::

player 1: “What...”player 2: “Colour...”Player 3: “Comes...”player 1: “after...”player 2: “red...”player 3: “in...”player 1: “the...”player 2: “rainbow?”

see how many words you can describe in 3 minutes, thenchange places so that someone else is the guesser.

Fireside GamesIn the Pond

Sounds Familiar

Fortunately... Unfortunately...

one person leads the group. the leader says one ofthree commands, and everyone must do an action:

* “in the pond” - put your arms straight out* “out of the pond” - put your arms up in the air* “on the banK” - put your hands on your thighs

the leader keeps mixing up the commands, gettinggradually faster and faster. don’t be the one to becaught out!

one person thinks of a famous musical tune. they thenhave to hum the tune for the others to guess.

if you want a challenge, use a musical instrument but -instead of playing different notes - play the *same*note all the time, at the correct rhythm.

or you could try to clap the rhythm to the others tosee if they can guess it from that.

one person starts with a piece of good news, such as:

“fortunately, I found a five pound note today...”

and then the next person explains why it was bad news:

“unfortunately, it was only monopoly money...”

then the next person continues the story withsomething good, once more:

“but it was from an antique set worth a lot of money”

continue alternating between good and bad news untilthe story reaches a natural end - happy or sad!
