The Story of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2)[www.franciscanmedia.org]

At the end of the fourth century, a woman named Etheria made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Her journal, discovered in 1887, gives an unprecedented glimpse of liturgical life there. Among the celebrations she describes is the Epiphany, the observance of Christ’s birth, and the gala pro-cession in honor of his Presentation in the Temple 40 days later. (Under the Mosaic Law, a woman was ritually “unclean” for 40 days after childbirth, when she was to present herself to the priests and offer sacrifice—her “purification.” Contact with anyone who had brushed against mystery—birth or death—excluded a person from Jewish worship.) This feast emphasizes Je-sus’ first appearance in the Temple more than Mary’s purification.

The observance spread throughout the Western Church in the fifth and sixth centuries. Because the Church in the West celebrated Jesus’ birth on December 25, the Presentation was moved to February 2, 40 days after Christmas.

At the beginning of the eighth century, Pope Sergius inaugurated a candlelight procession; at

Group 2 plays Bingo at Maple Lawn March 9, 2017.

As of October, I am serving as president of the Slayton Area CCW. I recently went to a diocesan meeting and received infor-mation on each commission. We have in CCW 5 commissions: Organization and Leadership, International Service, Church, Legislative, Respect Life, Anti-Pornography, and Family and Community commissions. I would like to share with you some from Legislative and International Service.

First from Legislative. This year, January 22, is the 44th anniversary of Roe vs Wade that made abortion legal in the US. The March for Life this year because of the Presidential Inauguration is January 27. The United States Council of Catholic Bish-ops have a novena from January 21 through January 29. I am sharing a couple of the reflections from that novena. If you would like the full novena, you may get it by going to www.usccb.org and clicking the sight for the novena. Reflection for Janu-ary 22, 2017. Today, on this 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we consider the past four decades in which our society has legally permitted abortion. Since that tragic decision, many children's lives have been lost, and many suffer that loss--often in silence. Yet God's greatest desire is to forgive. No matter how far we have each strayed form his side, he says to us, "Don't be afraid. Draw close to my heart."

Reflection for January 23. 2017. Our culture is obsessed with perfection--a superficial perfection. Photos are airbrushed, and social media sites depict seemingly perfect lives. God calls us to seek perfection, too. He does not call us, however, to perfec-tion of appearance or abilities, but to perfection in love.

The writing goes on to talk about a child with Down syndrome.

The second event I would like to make you aware of is Catholics at the Capitol. It is March 9, 2017, (am - 4 pm. Diocesan-sponsored transportation is available! The day will begin with presentations, prayer, and trainings at the River Centre. After lunch, we will head to the State Capitol to lobby lawmakers with our bishops, and will conclude with a powerful send-off in the Capitol Rotunda. Catholics at the Capitol will provide Minnesota Catholics with the opportunity to learn about the key chal-lenges facing our state, gain insight into effective advocacy, and have conversations with elected officials about issues that matter to you. More information is available at https://catholicsatthecapitol.org and I would think it would be in The Courier.

The International Service Commission always has item that you can sew to go to countries such as Haiti. A new item is fabric bags and some of the older items are diapers made from used cotton t-shirts, pillowcase dresses, cutting/tearing old sheets into bandages and making sleeping bags our of used plastic bags.

If you are interested in doing any of these projects, please call Renee at 605 695 7817.

I hope to soon have a few samples of coffee mugs and estimates and information on a reverse osmosis and water softener for our St. Gabriel kitchen. A reverse osmosis and water softener would give us water for our coffee pot and drinking water. We have experienced so much trouble with coffee and a reverse osmosis would be a big help!

The proposed reverse osmosis would give us 20 gallons of water, enough for the Harvest Festival. The cost to rent both the water softener and reverse osmosis is $70 per month and we would have no upkeep with that rent.

QUILTING

Hopefully by the time you get The Trumpet, Msgr. Heiting's quilt will be completed. The weather got in our way to finish it earlier and hope it cooperates now.

I do not plan any Monday quilting in January. I have lots of family projects I would like to work on. If you would like some blocks to sew, I will be cutting some quilt kits or you may cut and sew some from our "stash." There are some blocks in the cupboard in the quilting room and lots of fabric in the closet. Thanks for all you do. We had 17 or 18 quilts for the Murray County Christmas Baskets and have a few quilts left in our closet for those who might be in need. I also have some thank you's to share with you from the quilts Donna Lenards gave to people at Joseph's Coat and in the Rochester area.

mation at St. Gabriel. I have been blessed to have worked with some of the most wonderful volunteers and supportive parishioners, and I am grateful for the experience. My faith has grown in so many ways, as I’ve had the opportunity to watch our children and youth grow in faith, and go out into the world to live their faith. And now to see some of their kids coming to our program for reli-gious education, as the cycle of faith and life is passed on.

I am grateful to be leaving simply because life has afforded me the chance to retire early. There are projects and a few plans on the horizon—most have to do with family and dreams and passions that I’ve just not had the time to pursue. This is an incredible gift for me. So we will see what God has in store, fully aware that those plans and dreams can change in an instant, and that ultimately, God is in control. More than anything, I believe that is not just true for me, but also for the parish. God knows the next step, even when we do not (or we think we do, but really don’t!). So as I am stepping out in faith and prayer, I challenge the parish to do the same. Pray for guidance as a new director is sought, and support that person as you have always supported me. I trust that whoever that person might be, they bring new vitality to our Faith Formation programs here. But always remember that a “director” is only a successful as his/her community. Support and involvement of the whole parish in Faith Formation is vital for any ‘program” to be of benefit to the parish.

One of the things that parishioners can do now to help is to recruit people to apply for this position. I would like to share a couple personal reflections on the “qualifications” for this job—which is really not just a job but a ministry. The most important thing is not having a great knowledge of the Catholic faith—yes, that is helpful - but some of the best Faith Formation Directors I’ve known haven’t had a big theological background. What they do have in common is a personal lived faith, a background of participation in the Catholic faith, and perhaps most important, a deep desire to serve God and their church community, especially the children, youth and their families. If you know of someone you believe would do well with this position, please encourage them to apply. The rewards and fruits that come from serving in this capacity are incredible.

I will continue to participate in the life of this community—and I look forward to that. Again, my deepest thanks to all of you…

In the Joy of Christ,

Lisa Kremer OFS
