We love a good family get together at FTH and this season we have something for the littlest ‘uns to the more mature members to enjoy together.

For little bairns and their grown ups, Paperbelle is a magical new show about colours especially aimed at the under 5’s. And for those babes that want to bop, the dance party hit of this year’s Imaginate Children’s Festival Wee Dance We Groove will get the teeny toes up on their feet!

The fun continues for families and friends with our Singalonga Saturday - a chance to dress up as your favourite character from High School Musical 3 and The Sound of Music, grab a goody bag and join in the party on the big silver screen.

Talking of great films, if you’ve never tried FTH cinema then jump to our film selection right away. There’s romance with the gorgeous Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia) in Letters to Juliet; the delicious, pairing of our favourite oddballs Woody Allan and Larry David in the offbeat comedy Whatever Works; and award winning animation from director Sylvain Chomet (Belleville Rendez Vous) in his second feature film The Illusionist - a delightful and touching story set in the director’s adopted home Edinburgh.

Never mind fun, Falkirk is also the place to be funny! FTH is delighted to host some of the biggest names in comedy this season as the first Funny in Falkirk Festival opens in July. Fred MacAulay, Des McLean and TV superstar Kevin Bridges are lined up for laughs. The comedy carries on (literally!) as FTH welcomes back the wickedly funny Mr Craig Hill - he of the swinging kilt and mischievous wit. Stopping off in one of only a handful of Scottish dates on his Lord of the Mince Show, Julian Clary sweeps into town in November. Expect irreverent camp from the queen of comedy!

Our commitment to drama lovers continues with two new but entirely different plays. Women Behaving Madly is the new one woman comedy from the fantastic MsFits Theatre – three women on the brink and an official from the Council!

There’s The also a new production of Dracula by Liz Lochead, one of Scotland’s most important playwrights – a suitably chilling adaptation of the classic for Halloween.

In the spring of 1893 Jonathan Harker, a young English solicitor, visits Castle Dracula in Transylvania for what he believes to be a routine deal with the nobleman Count Dracula. Harker soon realises that he is not a visitor at all, instead a prisoner to the deadly Dracula, who sets off to find Mina, Harker’s finance, and her sister Lucy.

The more Harker investigates his confinement, the more he fears his deadly captor. Can someone stop Dracula before he unleashes his supernatural powers on his first victim?

Dir. Woody Allen / US/France / 2009 / 1h 32mWith: Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood, Adam Brooks, Ed Begley Jr., Patricia Clarkson

Woody Allen returns to his true-home, New York, with this offbeat comedy about grouchy misanthrope Boris (Larry David – the perfect stand-in for Allen’s unique comic persona). Disappointed in his career as a quantum physicist, and almost nominated for the Nobel prize, Boris begins a new life in shabby Lower Manhattan. Here he makes an unlikely connection with a naive young runaway Melody (Evan Rachel Wood) and reluctantly allows her into his apartment and into his life.

When Melody’s uptight parents arrive to rescue her from entanglement with Boris, unexpected romantic chaos ensues and everyone quickly discovers that life is short and that love is a combination of luck and recognising the value of whatever works.

Dark, zany and full of trade-mark toe-curling moments, ‘Whatever Works’ is a must-see for Woody Allen and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ fans alike.

“The return to [Allen’s] home turf seems to have paid off, yielding a consistently energetic, engaging and funny picture that builds on the success of ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’… Ben Walters, The Guardian

Friday 20th August • 11:00 (cuppa), 19:30

Wednesday 25th August • 19:30

Dir. Rian Johnson / US / 2008 / 1h 54mWith: Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel Weisz, Rinko Kikuchi

An entertaining deployment of the caper movie genre with Brody and Ruffalo playing the world’s most consummate con-men.

Talked into one last scam by his outgoing older brother Stephen (Ruffalo), shy partner-in-crime Bloom (Brody - ‘The Pianist’) is set to target fantastically rich and eccentric heiress Penelope (Weisz - ‘The Constant Gardender’). The brilliant tricksters find their plans floundering as Bloom becomes emotionally entangled, an arch enemy enters the fray and Penelope may prove not be as naïve as the brothers first supposed.

In the best tradition of ‘The Sting’, story-telling and make-believe are at the heart of this likeable adventure in which the audience is taken this way and that, never knowing who’s fooling who. Writer-director Johnson’s first feature since the much-celebrated ‘Brick’ leads us across a dizzying array of locations in an original, enjoyably eccentric, merry dance. Look out for our own Robbie Coltrane playing a Poirot-ish, but crooked, Belgian museum curator.

“Johnson’s film is a playful piece of cinema that takes off like a magic carpet.” James Christopher, The Times

Letters To JulietMonday 9th August 14:30 (baby friendly), 19:30

Dir. Gary Winick / US / 2010 / 1h 45mWith: Amanda Seyfried, Christopher Egan, Gael Garcia Bernal, Vanessa Redgrave

An enchanting love story in which Sophie (Amanda Seyfried – young star of the smash hit ‘Mamma Mia’) travels to Verona – setting for Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ – and meets a group of volunteers who respond to letters written to Juliet, seeking romantic advice. Sophie finds and answers a letter that has been lost for 50 years, and is stunned when its author Claire (the venerable and mesmerising Vanessa Redgrave) arrives in Italy with her overprotective grandson to find the fiance she left decades before.

This tale of true love also stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Sophie’s preoccupied boyfriend, here reunited with the writer of ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’. Stunning Tuscan scenery pleasingly frames this sweet and charming adventure of new sparks and old flames.

“Like Mamma Mia for Shakespeare fans” John de Fore, Hollywood Reporter

Dir. Alberto Cavalcanti / UK / 1942 / 1h 32m / b/wWith: Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Allan, Frank Lawton, Thora Hird

A welcome new digital restoration of a masterpiece of British cinema, produced by Ealing Studios.

The midst of WWII and a cosy but isolated English village is taken over by a platoon of undercover German soldiers. The tension and suspicion steadily mount as the villagers struggle with confusion about how to deal with the invasion, and a startlingly dark tale unfolds.

From this initial premise of a threat realised – drawn from a short story by Graham Greene – Cavalcanti (director of the most memorable sequence in ‘Dead of Night’: ‘The Ventiloquist’s Dummy’) fashions a remarkably effective and startling thriller that transcends its roots in wartime propaganda. The tension and suspicion steadily mounts as the villagers struggle with confusion about how to deal with the realised threat of invasion, and a startlingly dark tale unfolds.

“A true hidden gem of our national cinema” Edinburgh International Film Festival 2010

Wednesday 15th September • 19:30

Dir. Pascal Chaumeil / France / 2010 / 1h 45m / French with English sub-titles With: Romain Duris, Vanessa Paradis, Julie Ferrier, Francois Damiens, Andrew Lincoln

Yet another film already snatched up for an English-speaking remake on the basis of its exemplary merits, even before the original’s UK release date.

This smart romantic comedy follows the exploits of Alex, his sister and her husband – a good-looking trio who have made a successful, if unorthodox business out of breaking up romances for a fee. Against a gorgeous Monte Carlo back-drop the band of miscreants set about mission impossible: halting the nuptials of beautiful Juliette as she prepares to wed her handsome fiancé (Andrew Lincoln – ‘Love Actually’ and star of British TVs ‘Teachers’ and ‘This Life’). You can probably guess what happens next but lovely scenery shot by veteran cinematographer Thierry Arbogast (‘Horseman on the Roof’, ‘Leon’, ‘Nikita’), frothy comedy, great set pieces and plenty of romance make this a definite pleasure.

“A clever premise played with jaunty humour, ‘Heartbreaker’… mixes fantasy and reality into a formula just original enough to entertain a very broad spectrum of filmgoers.” Lisa Nesselson, Screen International

Wednesday 22nd September • 19:30

Dir. Craig McCall / UK / 2010 / 1h26m‘Cameraman’ illuminates the work of Jack Cardiff, a man whose life and exceptional career are inextricably interwoven with the history of cinema, spanning nine decades of moving pictures.

In this unique and compelling insight into Cardiff’s work, the master himself explains how he helped elevate cinematography to an art form and made history with his groundbreaking vision and technical wizardry in ‘A Matter Of Life And Death’, ‘The Red Shoes’, ‘The African Queen’ and many others. Amongst many fascinating revelations and anecdotes, Cardiff relates what it was like to work with Hollywood’s greatest icons including Monroe, Hepburn, Bogart, Douglas and Loren. Martin Scorsese passionately guides us through Cardiff’s films and tells us why they have had such an influence on him.

Featuring unique interviews with the world’s greatest actors, directors and technicians, ‘Cameraman’ is humorous, intimate and a unique and valuable examination of British and international cinema history.

“This is an experience as rich in vicarious escapism as any narrative film, and is required viewing for anyone attracted by… the seductive myths of Hollywood.” Tom Seymour, Little White Lies

Monday 27th September • 19:30

Dir. Juan Jose Campanella / Argentina/Spain / 2009 / 2h 9m / Spanish with English sub-titlesWith: Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil, Pablo Rago, Javier Godino

Winner of this year’s Academy Award for best Foreign Language film and over 30 other international awards this is a slick, engrossing thriller about a former detective fighting a losing battle to leave his past behind.

Retired Argentinian federal justice agent Benjamín Espósito is writing a novel, using a troubling closed case as his source material – the brutal rape and murder of Liliana Coloto. Despite his department pursuing two other suspects, Benjamín and his assistant Pablo were convinced of the guilt of another man: Gomez. With the dual motive of researching his novel and seeking closure, Benjamin revisits all the key players in the case, including former colleague Irene: object of his unspoken feelings of affection, and Gomez himself. Great plot, great acting, great ending… a must-see in anyone’s book.

“A riveting thriller spiked with witty dialogue and poignant love stories… holding the viewer in thrall for most of its two-hour running time, it has the kind of universal appeal that unites critics and audiences.” Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter

Dir. Rachel Ward / Australia / 2009 / 1h 30mWith: Ben Medelsohn, Rachel Griffiths, Bryan Brown, Sophie Lowe

Summoned at the behest of his sister to his childhood home on a remote and arid Australian farm, writer Ned Kendall returns to the family fold to say goodbye to his dying father. Once home, long buried memories begin to surface and a gothic tale of hidden guilt and past misdeeds gradually emerges.

With a series of searing performances from a strong cast, including Bryan Brown, as the irascible and bullying patriarch, Rachel Griffiths as Ned’s put-upon sister (TVs ‘Brothers and Sisters’), and newcomer Sophie Lowe as the eponymous and mysterious Kate, and excellent direction, cinematography and sound-track this is an intensely dramatic, resonant piece of filmmaking from ex-‘Thornbirds’ star Rachel Ward – here making her feature film debut after several critically acclaimed shorts.

“A wholly satisfying film, ‘Beautiful Kate’ will linger - and haunt you.” Andrew L. Urban, Urban Cinefile

October school holiday screenings

Dir. Sylvain Chomet / UK/France / 2010 / 1h 23mThe Illusionist is one of a dying breed of music hall entertainers forced to accept gigs in fringe theatres, at garden parties and in increasingly obscure venues. Whilst performing in the inner Hebrides, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl who, awestruck by his performance, decides to follow him to Edinburgh… and change his life forever.

Award-winning Chomet’s (‘Belleville Rendezvous’) second feature is a beautiful, charming animation born out of an unrealised film script by Jacques Tati’s, and finally brought to life at his Scottish animation studio by Chomet at the request of the Tati family. The result is a visual poem – about loss and growing up and at the same time a marvel-filled love letter to Chomet’s adopted home town of Edinburgh.

Made in hand-drawn 2D at Chomet’s insistence, in homage to the vintage Disney films ‘101 Dalmations’ and ‘The Aristocats’ he so admires, the film’s graphics lend a vitality and ethereal charm to a gorgeous and powerful story about very human characters.

Dir. Noah Baumbach / US / 2010 / 1h 47mWith: Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rhys Ifans

Forty year-old Roger Greenberg is having a bit of a crisis. Following a nervous breakdown, self-absorbed, neurotic New Yorker Greenberg (Stiller) arrives in LA to lick his emotional wounds whilst minding his brother’s dog and family home. Here he is taken under the wing of the family P.A., Florence (Gerwig) – whose artless free-spirited nature Greenberg is drawn towards. He tries to get his life back on track by reconnecting with an old-flame and a long-lost friend, whilst pursuing an awkward relationship with the rootless Florence, but Greenberg has the tendency to be his own worst enemy.

Stiller shines in a masterful departure from his usual comic roles – portraying Greenberg with a nuanced mix of endearing awkwardness and unthinking solipsism. Baumbach (‘The Squid and the Whale’) and Leigh’s collaboration has created a mould-breaking, good-hearted character study, by turns painfully sad and downright funny.

Presented as part of Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival in association with Penumbra - a leading Scottish voluntary organisation working in the field of mental health to provide an extensive range of person-centred support services for adults and young people. Penumbra envisages a society where people with mental health problems expect recovery and are accepted, supported and have the resources to fulfil their potential.

Dir. Stephen Frears / UK / 2010 / 1h 51mWith: Gemma Arterton, Dominic Cooper, Roger Allam, Tamsin Greig, Luke Evans

The director of ‘The Queen’ and ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ cements his track record of excellent social satire with this return to the big screen – an enjoyable adaptation of Posy Simmonds graphic novel (itself based on Thomas Hardy’s ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’) about a successful, sultry young newspaper columnist who returns, on the occasion of an annual writers’ retreat, to her dull home village to sell her deceased mother’s property. Her presence succeeds in turning the heads of three very different menfolk, and Ms Drewe leaves an invidious trail of destruction in her wake.

Bond girl Gemma Arterton manages to make the frivolous heroine thoroughly sympathetic and more than earns her place as leading lady whilst there is wonderful support from Cooper (‘Mamma Mia’) as an obnoxious, leering suitor, Allam (‘The Queen’, ‘The Thick of It’) as the philandering novelist and Greig (‘Black Books’, ‘Green Wing’, R4s ‘The Archers’) as his much put-upon wife.

“’Tamara’ is funny, saucy and marvellously acted… and behind the lens, director Frears expertly juggles multiple character strands” Simon Reynolds, Cannes 2010 Digital Spy

Roberto Flores Born in Mexico City, Roberto initially studied dentistry before becoming a self taught photographer.

Roberto’s loves to capture pictures that ‘tell a story’ and is inspired by different cultures and their people. He also has a flair for music photography and is proud to be the official band photographer for Stirling’s Jack Butler.

Music has always been one of my passions.

In 2008 I met Liam who plays guitar, lead voice and synth in a band called Jack Butler. We connected instantly through our shared taste of music. They were the first band in Scotland to allow me to come and take photographs at their gigs which I haven’t stopped doing since then.

I believe in Jack Butler not just because our friendship but also because all of them are very talented musicians.

That is why this exhibition was created as a tribute to my passion for music, to the legacy of amazing photographic work created during all this time of me being “The official Jack Butler’s photographer” and for Jack Butler itself.
