For animalloven who enjoy taking their dogs alona when joggir11. please consider leaYiag them at home during hot. humid days. Forcing a dog to run can cause permanent damage to hit heart. Remember, do&• are "barefoot" and hot sidewalks and sand can bum lhcir paws.
Pets that spend time outdoon should have a shaded uea and plenty of water to drink. A dog house in a sun-blazed yud acts as an oven.
Signs of a heat-stressed dog are heavy panting, darkening of the toAJue and/or frequent lac· ging or stopping. If signs occur:
• Submerge dog in cool water up to the neck or wrap in towels soaked in cool water to lower temperature as quickly u possible.
• Do not give unlimited amounts of cold water. Let tbe pet lick. ice cubes or ice cream.
• If a pet is unconscious or appears seriously injured. 1et him to a veterinarian immedialely.

A Greet .belt Gardener by Rosie Rhabarb
This is a good time of year in the vegetable garden. Summer vegetables are still npening and autumn vegetables can be planted during the next couple weeks
Summer Vegetables
Summer -.egetables wtll produce tdl the first frost. so keep checkmg your plants. Pepper flowers won't become frwt as of· ten in h1gh heat so some people may get more pcppen in the faJJ than they did dunng this past summer.
Tomatoes split due to a sudden increase m moisture. St. pick ripe tomatoes if you know rain IS due. Tomatoes develop cracks on then tops from fluctuatwos in moinure a.s they grow. So keep the planu wau:n:d in dry weather and-in the future try growing varietie.'l thai crack less. such a.s OG 50 and Roma.
Zucchini and summer squash are best eaten when eight to 12 inches long. For bigger squash • try stuffmg them or using them in stews or soup.!.
Many of the same vegetables grown in the spring can do even better in the autumn since insect
· dama&e will be Ius and lbe days wtll be cool duriaa most of this growing 1C8ICia- Hoc WUIIIKr in the next couple ol weob ea be tough for tbcm.-..,.,-, them by making sure IIIey Jll

Some vegd&bles an: better off started as small plant.s this time of year: broccoli. Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. Well stocked garden stores should have tbese and seeds for ule. Some vegetables an: fme to start from seed. such u lettuce, carr-. ch.ard, rwlish, spimch, aod leaf} greens su.ch as kale. turnip. collard and mustard greens .
Cool weatbcr -vqelables are unaffected by ligbl and medium hard fros!S. So they will keep producing till the weather gets cold, maybe eveo a.s late a.s December. Then han! frosts will kill most of them. Some actually im· prove in taste after the frost. !.UCh
