Girls Basketball

By Meeghan Binder

By Mr. Hopper and Ms. Gustafson

The Field-Stevenson Sharks are in the process

of preparing for their intramural basketball game against the Grant White Eagles. With a roster 20

strong Mr. Hopper and Ms. Gustafson are

hoping for a ‘W’ on April 19th at 3:00. We only have 10 practices but we are looking good and will

only get better! Many of the girls have not played organized basketball before but we are hoping the 5th graders that have experience can lead the rest on the court! We look forward to the rest of the season and we hope to see everyone in the bleachers cheering the girls on! GO SHARKS!

The third quarter celebration sponsored by the PBIS team for Field-Stevenson School was held on Thursday, March 31, 2011.  Students from each homeroom were invited to invest their Shark Bites in a Mystery Prize drawing for the opportunity to represent their homerooms in a “Minute to Win It” competition.  At the time of this writing, students had not yet been informed what the celebration would look like, and contestants had not yet been selected.  Two lucky participants from each homeroom, as well as two faculty members, participated in one of ten contests, ala the popular TV show, competing for prizes and bragging rights.  The events included blowing a feather across the floor, shaking ping pong balls out of a tissue box tied to the waist, stacking cups and seven other fun challenges.  The entire student body watched and rooted for their homerooms.  PBIS celebrations are held quarterly to acknowledge the efforts students and faculty have made towards making sure Field-Stevenson is a 3 B school – Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe.  The first quarter celebration was a movie morning with treats and the second quarter celebration was a game/activity afternoon.  What will the end of the year bring?  Keep up the good work, Sharks!

On Tuesday, April 19, 2011, Field-Stevenson will hold an induction ceremony for the first group of fourth and fifth graders selected to be members of the newly formed chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS). The NEHS was formed in 2008 and Field-Stevenson holds charter number 1338. Of forty-nine students who were eligible based on report cards from the most recent four quarters, twenty-eight submitted applications which indicated the extent to which they volunteer, lead, and otherwise participate in activities and organizations outside the classroom. Students were also

Minute to Win Ita PBIS Celebration

By Cherie Bussert On March 22, the Field-Stevenson Choir traveled to Betsy Ross Elementary School to perform a concert to help celebrate Music in Our Schools Month. It was a lovely concert that was attended by all of the kindergarten, first and second grade students. The

spring session of choir will now be preparing for their Spring Concert on May 4, 2011 at the Festival of the Arts. On April 14, 2011 at 9:00 a.m., our fifth

grade students will present their musical performance entitled, "A World of Music." Since January, the fifth graders have been studying the cultures and music of Japan, Africa and the Caribbean. Our performance is a culmination of all that we have learned and will feature songs, instrumental pieces and dances from around the world.

South Side Spring Fling! The second annual South Side Spring Fling took place Friday, March 25th and was a huge success.  Betsy Ross and Field Stevenson PTO, parent volunteers, and the staff at both schools came together to host a wonderful night for the students of Forest Park. Each classroom and the Field teachers helped contribute to the themed grade level raffle baskets. Local businesses and community organizations also donated to the Spring Fling raffle and their contributions were artfully arranged and the baskets were raffled off during the Spring Fling.   The Spring Fling is the primary fundraiser for the South Side PTO and this year the community proved to be just as generous as always!

required to provide two letters of recommendation from teachers and members of the community.

The induction ceremony will begin at 6:30 pm with a processional. The guest speaker will be Matt Walsh, a graduate of Forest Park Public Schools, and candidate in this year’s election for Village Commissioner.

Inductees are invited to bring guests, and following the formal ceremony, refreshments will be served. Congratulations to the first class of NEHS for Field-Stevenson School. Names will be published in the final newsletter of the year.

Honor Roll

The Performing Arts Club presented a wonderfully hilarious skit entitled, “The People Against George Washington” to third graders on March 24th. This lively group of actors is part of the Performance Arts Club, a group of 5th graders who meet after school twice a week to rehearse with their director, Ms. Donna Nowak.

Currently, the club is working on a puppet theater and a full performance of “The Hiccup” for the annual Festival of the Arts at Field-Stevenson.
