TYPES OF FRUITS
The three main classification of fruits are:
• Simple fruits
• Compound fruits
• Accessory fruits
Simple Fruits
Simple fruits develop from a single ovary of a single flower.
They can be either dry or fleshy
The two types of simple fruits are
Simple fleshy fruits
Simple dry fruits
Simple fleshy fruits
Fleshy fruits are fruits that have a
fleshy part between the fruit’s covering
and the seeds.
Fleshy fruits include eggplant, squash
and tomatoes which are commonly
called vegetables.
Simple dry fruits• Dry fruits are fruits which are dried
either naturally or artificially to remove
its original water content.
• The two types of dry fruits areDehiscent dry fruits and
Indehiscent dry fruits.
Compound fruits Fruits that develop from several
ovaries from either a single flower
or multiple flowers are compound fruits.
There are two types of compound
fruits which are:
Aggregate fruits
Multiple fruits
Accessory fruits The fruits in which the fleshy part is
formed by the parts other than the ovary
and its outer wall are accessory fruits.
They are some times known as the
false fruit or pseudocarp.

LIST OF FRUITS
The list of fruits include:
Temperate fruits
Tropical fruits
Sub tropical fruits
Mediterranean fruits
Inedible fruits
Exotic fruits
Hybrid fruits
Temperate fruits require a cold season for their growth.
Its varieties are: pome fruits, stone fruits and berry fruits.
• Tropical fruits grow in warm countries. They cannot tolerate temperature close to freezing point.
• Subtropical fruits requires warm condition but they can tolerate and survive in light frosts.
• Mediterranean fruits do not grow in northern climate and require some colder weather for their growth.
Inedible fruits and their leaves are poisonous, consumption of which causes breathing problems, vomiting, dizziness etc.
Exotic fruits are fruits that are cultivated and grown outside the native, some of which are tropical.
Rambutan, star fruit, sapodilla are some of the exotic fruits.
Hybrid fruits are formed by cross breeding of two different fruits.
For example, grapple is a combination of grapes and apple, which tastes like grape and looks like apple.
