From 27 July to 9 September all eyes were upon Britain, as we welcomed the world to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The splendour of Beijing in 2008 had given us much to live up to, and the pressure to deliver was immense; yet it can fairly be said that London 2012 was a complete triumph.

The exploits of the athletes alone would have ensured that these events will live long in the memory. Yet the world also saw the pride, ambition and ability of our nation, from Danny Boyle’s epoch-making Opening Ceremony all the way through to the closing of the Paralympics.
