In the spirit of Jesus and taking up our 2018 theme of believing in hope and a future for all people, let us as Marists be people who, through our word and action, offer the world a new way of seeing and being. A world where every young person can enjoy the hope of a future beyond the horizon which they are yet to discover. Pope Francis said that “a single individual is enough for hope to exist.” The Good News is that our Marist communities are full of single individuals that together create an ‘us’. Indeed, hope does have a future. (Tony Clark, Director of Formation, MSA)

Farewell and ThanksPeter McCabe (Operations Manager and former SHCS Business Manager) is retiring after commencing at the College in 2001. Peter’s financial stewardship of the College and integral involvement across numerous aspects of College operations has been astute and extensive. He leaves the College in a far better place than when he arrived! We wish him well in retirement.

Daniel Lynch (Deputy Principal) departs Sacred Heart to the principalship of Christian Brothers College in the city. Dan’s four years have been jam packed with ensuring that the College remains a leader in contemporary Catholic Education which is founded in excellent care for its students. He leaves many legacies including our House system, a well resourced sports program and many friendships across the community by way of his affable nature and typically ‘Broken Hill’ sense of humour, sometimes referred to ‘don’t take yourself too seriously, mate!’ We wish you well, Daniel!

So, to all of the ‘Hearts’ community - may Christmas be blessed with a sense of hope and joy as we celebrate the birth of Jesus and special times with our family and friends!

Kind regards,

Steve ByrnePrincipal

From the Head of Champagnat CampusThe final weeks of school have been rich and wonderful.

Champagnat Parent ForumLast Monday evening, parents gathered, in large numbers to hear about our planning and preparation for Champagnat Campus. Members of the Executive and Champagnat Leadership Team spoke about the different components of the transition and support structures that have been put in place. Images of the new buildings were displayed as we shared in our excitement for 2019. Practical matters such as the timetable, bell times, buses, homeroom and core group, as well as learning support and CEA were also discussed. Parents left feeling informed and reassured that we are making the appropriate preparations. We feel strongly that the transition to Champagnat Campus in 2019 will be an important and exciting step forward for our community.

Good Samaritan Mass Last Thursday we gathered around the table of the Eucharist to mark the final chapter in the Marymount journey. We remembered, with gratitude the Good Samaritan Sisters who founded this College and guided us on our way. We have been nourished by the charism of their order over the last 62 years and inspired to show compassion, hospitality, stewardship and reconciliation to one another. Our Good Samaritan Mass was an opportunity to reflect on our time at Marymount, to share an important story and celebrate all that is good in our community.

At the conclusion of the Mass and in the presence of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, we acknowledged our most prestigious award recipients. The Good Samaritan Awards recognise the qualities that Jesus explained to us in a parable about the ideal way to act towards each other. These qualities form the basis of the Marymount charisms: compassion, hospitality and stewardship that are lived out in the spirit of reconciliation. We congratulate our Good Samaritan Award recipients:

As the Marymount journey draws to a close, we give thanks for our rich history and 62 years of Good Samaritan, girls education. We leave Hove with full hearts and wonderful memories.

A Marymount CelebrationIt’s been a week of celebrations and performances for our girls, highlighting the richness and diversity of our community. We celebrated sport and debating at our CEA evening and with over 340 girls involved in school sport, we had much to celebrate! On Wednesday, our Year 9s, accompanied by soloists from Year 6/7/8, put on an incredible Dance Production. The evening was just extraordinary. Each performance was unique and special and a joy to watch. I left in awe of the talent in our community. On Thursday evening saw the Marymount Music Soirée. Girls performed individual, group and ensemble pieces, all of them impressed. It was a wonderful evening as students, teachers and families enjoyed the vast array of talent.

Year 9 Rite of PassageWe gathered this week to say goodbye to the Year 9 class of 2018. Our farewell rituals continue to be a feature of the College as students, teachers and families gathered together to honour our Year 9 students. Our Captains made their final address; they are accomplished individuals who spoke with insight and eloquence. They have been wonderful ambassadors for the College. The final week for Year 9’s is a wonderful rite of passage, we celebrate them well. The Year 9 Class of 2018 will definitely be missed and we wish them all the best as they embark on their senior years at Marcellin Campus.

Staff FarewellsAs the term draws to a close, we take the opportunity to give thanks for the work of our outstanding staff who are moving on or entering retirement next year. We will miss their friendly faces, warm smiles and generous spirits.

• Chris Grimm has been a dedicated teacher of 22 years and we wish her all the best in this next phase of her life. She will be remembered for her loyal service, love of food and deep commitment to our Marymount community.

• Marie Walsh also retires having giving significant years of service to our College, 19 to be precise. We will miss her welcome, wicked sense of humour and creativity.

• After 22 years of service, Leanne Carr explores further Leadership opportunities in girls’ education and we wish her well. She will be remembered for her love of learning and deep care and commitment for staff and students alike.

• Christos Anemouri, Dominic Ascoli, Ben Caruso, Hamish McDonald, Bron McLeod, Jenni Stam, Alexandra Tilley, Kirstin Tocker and Connie Trimboli also explore new opportunities and we wish them well. They will be remembered for their energy, drive and passion for all things Marymount.

• Rob Dunkley, our Maintenance Manager, has also accepted a new challenge and will join the new McAuley community. We will miss his calm, positive approach and deep care for our grounds.

• Vanessa Anderson, Carmel Briggs, Ann Christie, Hebbie Clarke, Sara Petruzella and Jen Rollins also conclude their time at the College. We will miss their quiet enthusiasm and compassionate nature.

A Moment of ThanksAs the term concludes and summer sets in, I look back and reflect on the year that has been and smile. What a rich and rewarding experience it has been, filled with many moments of gratitude. I have seen and experienced a community of deep and rich connectedness and feel privileged to be part of the Marymount community. Amidst the hard work and learning, there is much laughter and celebration. I take this opportunity to thank the Marymount staff for their commitment to learning and contribution to community life.

I wish all our families a safe and happy Christmas and I look forward to working with you again in the New Year at Champagnat Campus.

Year 9 GraduationWhat a great week for our Year 9s! We celebrated the achievements of our Tradelinx students who completed courses in Construction, Metal and Hair & Makeup, applauded our recipients of Academic and Commendation Awards, and of course, proudly saw the girls complete their final Marymount “Rite of Passage” in Wednesday night’s Year 9 Graduation. It was clear from the smiles, hugs (and many tears!) that the girls were both excited and sad to be moving on from the place which has nurtured them through their middle years. All of the girls’ Rite Journey teachers spoke with fondness and admiration for the wonderful class of 2018 and we wish each and every one of them happiness and success into the future. A sincere thank you to all families who shared this auspicious occasion with us, you have much to be proud of!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Assistant to the Principal - Champagnat ProjectChristmas Hamper AppealWe had another successful Christmas Hamper Appeal this year. All homerooms donated $10 a student or donated goods to the value of $10, to create a hamper full of Christmas food/gifts for less fortunate families in five St Vincent de Paul conferences - St Marys, Seacombe Gardens, Brighton, Glenelg and Morphett Vale. St Vincent de Paul sends a big ‘thank you’ to all families who donated, as this helps immensely at this time of the year.

Farewell and Thank YouAs we come to the end of another year, I take this opportunity to thank all students, families and staff for the contributions you have made to the Middle School of Sacred Heart College in 2018. To the parents and friends of the College who have supported the work of students and staff, and to those who have generously given their time in volunteering, I say a huge thank you!

I acknowledge each learner for the contributions they have made to the College this year. A tremendous amount of learning, along with an enormous range of activities beyond the classroom, have taken place this year and I congratulate you all on your efforts in building the community and family spirit.

We have many staff who are leaving us at the end of the year to head to new and exciting experiences. I thank each and every one of them for the contributions they’ve made to the lives of the students and the Ccollege during their time at Sacred Heart. On behalf of the wider school community, I congratulate the following staff on their recent appointments and wish them every blessing as they begin a new chapter in the educational careers.

• Ashleigh Bryans – Director of Learning Pathways, Thomas More College • Kate Fallon – Year 7 Wellbeing Leader, Mary MacKillop College • Tom Jordan – Year 7-12 Teacher, St Paul’s College• Krystle Payten – Year 7-12 Teacher, Immanuel College• Tina Robins – Year 7-12 Teacher, Thomas More College• Tamara Smith – Assistant Principal Religious Identity and Mission (APRIM), All Saints School• Emily Upton – Year 7-12 Teacher, St Dominic’s Priory College

I also wish the following staff all the very best as they continue their teaching careers in 2019: Lucy Pickering, Cameron Hext, Justine DeCorso, Madeleine Hayes, Heath Varts, Emmalee Leaning and Vicki Hogg. We thank and farewell Jane Common and Maureen Watts who have been sharing the role of Receptionist in 2018.

I would like to conclude by thanking the learners, staff and wider community of Sacred Heart College Middle School for the understanding and support they’ve shown through a year of significant change! The campus has undergone significant building works this year and the flexibility, resilience and cooperation shown by both staff and students has been outstanding. All year we’ve talked about ‘short term pain for long term gain’ and I look forward to sharing the long term gain of the new Champagnat Campus with you all in 2019.

Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas and pray that you will have time to connect with family, friends and the important people in your lives this Christmas.

SENIOR SCHOOL

From the Head of Senior SchoolYear 11 Immersion TripStudents departed for their Immersion Trip on Friday 16 November. There was much excitement from all team members as they gathered at Adelaide Airport ahead of their journeys to Sri Lanka/India, the Philippines, and Fiji. Information and pictures have been shared on the College Facebook site which inform all followers that they are achieving everything they hoped for and more! We look forward to their safe return tomorrow.

Orientation MorningNew students gathered at Walter Park (adjacent to the Chapel) on the morning of Friday 23 November. They spent the morning with their Head (and Assistant Head) of House getting to know each other as well as the layout of the campus. Many thanks to current student leaders who assisted on the day to make this important orientation a successful event.

Student Leadership Gathering (Victoria)From Sunday 25 - Tuesday 27 November, SHC student leaders for 2019 travelled to Amberley, Melbourne for the annual Student Leaders Gathering run by the Marist Youth Ministry Team. Alexis Dignam, Kyle Lang, Ash Pearce and Georgia Chant were joined by student leaders from around the country. The focus of the three days was to help the students to better understand and appreciate the Marist dimension of their leadership roles and to strengthen their capacity to express key elements of Marist spirituality. The camp also provided opportunity for student leaders to contribute to the development of the school’s Catholic and Marist values, to ultimately develop their confidence and skills to serve others in a spirit of solidarity.

Variety SA Children’s Christmas LunchStudents from all three campuses volunteered at the Variety Children’s Christmas party and lunch for 1,950 children and 800 carers and parents at the Wayville showgrounds, which also included the set-up the day prior. It was a brilliant day for all involved and the students exceeded themselves, going above and beyond for two entire days. It was terrific to see our students interact with the children, making them feel welcome and ensuring they enjoyed their special day, showing their true Marist spirit. This is a massive highlight for the children involved and they look forward to it all year. It was wonderful to be able to support children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs by giving back to the community! Sacred Heart College has built a significant relationship with Variety SA over many years and we look forward to continuing this into the future, thanks to our students and staff involved.

RemarAs the year came to an end, Remar celebrated 2018 with a Graduation Dinner and Presentation for the Year 12 Gold Caravel held at the College. The evening included Year 12 Rowers, their parents and Remar staff. It was an evening of celebration and festivity and a time to reflect on their three year journey. The students affirmed each other with individual speeches and each acknowledged their Helm Damian Creazzo by openly sharing what a significant role he has played in each of their lives. We farewelled Damian as he concludes his time here at the College - we wish him well and thank him for his contribution to Remar.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this night a success, it was a brilliant evening. Also, a very special thank you to parents for their ongoing support over these three years, it is extremely valued.

It has been an eventful year for the Year 11 Blue Caravel with many momentous occasions, the students are to be thanked for their contribution and influence at the College. We also bid farewell to Annicka Adolphi who has been a part of Remar for many years and thank her for her devotion to the program and enhancing it with her presence and endless concepts, you will be missed by all. We welcomed Melissa Bousfield who will be officially a part of the Remar team in 2019; thank you for your contribution Melissa and we look forward to having you on board.

Year 12 Graduation EventLast Friday was a spectacular afternoon for our Year 12 graduating students. The Year 12 Graduation Celebration was the final gathering of the Class of 2018 - it was a time to reflect on the ‘year that was’, a time to celebrate with family and friends, and a time to gather one last time in recognition of each other. Students were presented with Graduation Certificates and Testimonials in recognition of their time at the College and the event was wrapped up with a celebration of food and conversation in and around a marquee on the College oval.

The PIN will be changed after the first log in (may have already changed if logged in previously). The PIN can be reset from this page if necessary.

Students should log in well before results release day to confirm that their log in details and their personal details are correct. It may also be helpful for students to take some time to familiarise themselves with the pages they will view on results release day. Students having trouble logging in on results release day, can contact the SACE Support Team on 8115 4712 or email [email protected]. For more information about SACE results, visit My results on the SACE website.

Holdfast Bay Library ServiceDuring the school holidays, the Holdfast Bay Library Service will be running a Summer Reading Program. Simply pop into one of our branches - Glenelg or Brighton and pick-up a reading log, read and record 10 titles, then return the log to the Library and go into the draw for movie and book vouchers. A book voucher will also be presented to the school who has the most students involved to purchase a book for their Library. Whilst we are only closed on public holidays during the festive season, we look forward to seeing you soon!
