Welcome from the President

Welcome! We’re delighted to see so many of you here, old friends and new, joining us for this Gala evening. There is wonderful music ahead for you tonight, along with great food, wine, company, and most of all, the opportunity for you to share in the excitement of American Bach Soloists, by supporting these musicians with your donations, all while having fun competing against your fellow bidders!

It’s been a banner year for American Bach Soloists. At our sold-out performances of Handel’s Messiah at Grace Cathedral, we recorded a stunning DVD that you’ll hear more about tonight. There were cantatas and concertos and the dramatic St. Matthew Passion. Just a few weeks ago, we finished the sixth annual Bach Festival and Academy, which brought 73 young musicians from around the world, our largest group yet, to study and perform with ABS. Tickets sold so quickly for our French Baroque opera, Sémélé, that we needed an additional performance. The Festival was a great success.

But don’t just take our word for it. In San Francisco Classical Voice’s “Best of the Bay” reader poll, over 1,700 audience members voted us as the winners of “Best Early Music / Baroque Performance” (for Messiah), and “Best Choral Performers,” too.

This Gala is where we make it all possible.

Welcome from the Honorary Chair

Welcome to the American Bach Soloists 2015 Gala! It is such a privilege to be asked to support the superb artists who make up the ABS choir and ensemble and their gifted director, Maestro Jeffrey Thomas. Among the many insights Malcolm Gladwell, a Canadian journalist and bestselling author, has brought to us through his innovative studies is the idea of mastery of a subject through the application of 10,000 hours of practice. Each artist is in a cosmic level of mastery through his or her devotion to their particular area of music performance. As a result, ordinary speaking voices become channels of the spirit while singing; inert instruments become beautifully animate; complicated music gains dynamism and coherence and meaning.

Many of you are long-time supporters of ABS, and I honor your presence here tonight—you have helped ABS bring sublime music to the Bay Area for over two decades. Others of you are new supporters, and your very presence is appreciated. Let me urge us all, new fans and veteran supporters, to be greatly generous tonight. Welcome to Sparkle, ABS’s 13th Annual Gala at the James Leary Flood Mansion in San Francisco! For the first twelve years, our Annual Gala has taken over the church, grounds, and property of St. Stephen’s Church, Belvedere. This year, we have moved our Gala to the heart of San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood to celebrate American Bach Soloists and our San Francisco home. We are so glad to welcome those who have attended our past events in Marin, and we are especially pleased to welcome those who are joining us here for the first time.

Tonight, ABS is pleased to honor The Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus, Bishop of California, as Honorary Chair. Bishop Andrus has been a strong supporter of ABS throughout the years, and we are in awe of his eloquence and grace in his work with social-justice issues throughout Northern California and across the globe. His recent work with the music school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has been a model for global care and concern.

Sparkle is, above all else, a fundraiser! Tonight’s fundraising event supports the myriad programs that ABS offers. From its annual subscription season, now in its 27th season, to the annual ABS Festival and Academy, as well as our public master classes, pre-concert lectures, and so much more, American Bach Soloists is the leader in early-music performance in the Bay Area, and you are here because you believe that ABS should continue to be supported. Every dollar raised tonight supports one of these programs that are loved and admired by so many people. So remember, our goal tonight is to help ABS raise as much money as possible. About the James Leary Flood Mansion

“In the aftermath of the Great Quake of 1906, Maud Flood’s monumental home on Nob Hill was destroyed by fire. She fled San Francisco with her two children and told her husband that she was fearful of living in a city where such devastation could strike so suddenly. James Leary Flood reassured his wife, saying, “I will build you a house of marble on a hill of granite.” And that is precisely what he did. He found the perfect spot (buying and moving a home already there), hired renowned architects Bliss & Faville, began construction in 1912 and three years later moved his family in, just in time to enjoy the panoramic view overlooking the 1915 Panama-Pacific World Exposition which filled the land below stretching to the Bay.

Flood’s fortune was inherited from his father, James Clair Flood, who had purchased a supposedly worthless Nevada mine in the 1870’s. The mine contained veins of gold and silver worth over 300 million dollars. That estate enabled James Leary Flood to build his magnificent mansion. After her husband’s death, Maud Flood gave her home to the Religious of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic order dedicated to education and service to the community. The Flood Mansion is now part of the Broadway campus of Schools of the Sacred Heart. It remains one of the most beautiful examples of domestic architecture in the United States.”

About American Bach Soloists

AMERICAN BACH SOLOISTS (“ABS”) was founded in 1989 with the mission of introducing contemporary audiences to the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach through historically informed performances. Under the leadership of co-founder and Music Director Jeffrey Thomas, the ensemble has achieved its vision of assembling the world’s finest vocalists and period-instrument performers to bring this brilliant music to life.

For more than two decades, Jeffrey Thomas has brought thoughtful, meaningful, and informed perspectives to his performances as Artistic and Music Director of the American Bach Soloists. Recognized worldwide as one of the foremost interpreters of the music of Bach and the Baroque, he continues to inspire audiences and performers alike through his keen insights into the passions behind musical expression. Fanfare Magazine proclaimed that “Thomas’ direction seems just right, capturing the humanity of the music … there is no higher praise for Bach performance.” Critical acclaim has been extensive: The Washington Post named ABS “the best American specialists in early music … a flawless ensemble … a level of musical finesse one rarely encounters.” San Francisco Classical Voice declared “there is nothing routine or settled about their work. Jeffrey Thomas is still pushing the musical Baroque envelope.” And the San Francisco Chronicle has extolled the ensemble’s “divinely inspired singing.”

In 2013, to commemorate ABS music director Jeffrey Thomas’s 25-year tenure of inspired leadership, the American Bach Soloists created the Jeffrey Thomas Award to honor, recognize, and encourage exceptionally gifted emerging professionals in the field of early music.

Jeffrey Thomas, Music Director

Jeffrey Thomas is Artistic and Music Director of the American Bach Soloists, with whom he has directed and conducted recordings of more than 25 cantatas, the Mass in B Minor, St. Matthew Passion, Brandenburg Concertos, and works by Schütz, Pergolesi, Vivaldi, Haydn, and Beethoven. He has appeared with the Baltimore, Berkeley, Boston, Detroit, Houston, National, Rochester, Minnesota, and San Francisco symphony orchestras; with the Vienna Symphony and the New Japan Philharmonic; with virtually every American Baroque orchestra; and in Austria, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Mexico. He has performed at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Spoleto USA Festival, Ravinia Festival, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Berkeley Festival and Exhibition, Boston Early Music Festival, Bethlehem Bach Festival, Göttingen Festival, Tage Alte Musik Festival in Regensburg, E. Nakamichi Baroque Festival in Los Angeles, the Smithsonian Institution, and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s “Next Wave Festival,” and he has collaborated on several occasions as conductor with the Mark Morris Dance Group.

Educated at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and the Juilliard School of Music, with further studies in English literature at Cambridge University, he has taught at the Amherst Early Music Workshop, Oberlin College Conservatory Baroque Performance Institute, San Francisco Early Music Society, and Southern Utah Early Music Workshops, presented master classes at the Eastman School of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, SUNY at Buffalo, Swarthmore College, and Washington University, been on the faculty of Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, and was artist-in-residence at the University of California, where he is now professor of music (Barbara K. Jackson Chair in Choral Conducting) and director of choral ensembles in the Department of Music at UC Davis. He was a UC Davis Chancellor’s Fellow from 2001 to 2006; and the Rockefeller Foundation awarded him a prestigious Residency at the Bellagio Study and Conference Center at Villa Serbelloni for April 2007, to work on his manuscript, “Handel’s Messiah: A Life of Its Own.”

2015 Gala Chairs

The Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus, Honorary Chair

The Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus is the eighth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California. He was installed as bishop in 2006—a position of oversight for a diocese comprising 27,000 communicants in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties, and the cities of Los Altos and part of Palo Alto. Prior to his election as Bishop of California, he served as Bishop Suffragan in the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. His leadership has focused on key issues related to peace and justice, including immigration reform, climate change, civil rights for LGBT persons, and health care. An example of his local engagement includes co-chairing a community-wide planning process for rebuilding St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco. Bishop Andrus serves on the boards of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, California Pacific Medical Center, Episcopal Charities, the Episcopal School for Deacons, Episcopal Community Services, and the American Bach Soloists, among other foundations. The Rt. Rev. Andrus is married to Sheila Andrus, former director of the Sparkman Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Public Health, and they have two adult daughters: Chloé and Pilar.

Dr. Kaneez Munjee, Chair

Kaneez Munjee is a Bay Area arts administrator, singer, and musicologist. She is currently Managing Director of the Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco, which provides talented young women ages 5-18 from across the Bay Area with exceptional interpersonal and musical experiences. Prior to YWCP, Kaneez spent over a decade in arts management with organizations such as Portland Baroque Orchestra, West Bay Opera, Schola Cantorum (Mountain View), and the Fremont Symphony Orchestra, and as the Media and Publications Director at Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. In 2011, Kaneez completed a joint PhD in music and humanities from Stanford University, with a dissertation on the figure of Orpheus in French Baroque cantatas. Additionally, she is active in the Bay Area musical community as a writer for San Francisco Classical Voice and as a program annotator for many local ensembles.

Liam Mayclem, Auctioneer

Emmy award-winning Liam Mayclem is the host and producer of KCBS’ “Foodie Chap” segments and former KPIX 5 TV’s Eye on The Bay, which airs weekends. Born in London to Irish parents, Liam Mayclem is an Irishman with an English accent. Since the launch of the show in 2005, Liam has traveled to Australia, Canada, and many major cities across America. He has cooked with the world’s top chefs: Thomas Keller, Tyler Florence, Martin Yan, Cat Cora, and many more. His TV career kicked into gear in 1989, when he joined Channel TV on the island of Jersey, UK, as a News Announcer and reporter. He left the island in 1994, and ventured west to get a piece of the “American dream.” His first stop was as a show host for TechTV. He then landed at KRON 4 as the morning liveshot reporter from 2001 to 2005. In his spare time, Liam enjoys live concerts, theater, venturing outdoors, and exploring the Bay Area.

Colleen Buckley-Reynolds, Gala Consultant

Colleen Buckley-Reynolds, together with her late husband, the renowned auctioneer David Reynolds, began Reynolds & Buckley Fundraising Auctions in San Francisco in 1995. With David at the “front of the house” and Colleen “at the back,” they pioneered an approach to fundraising auctions that has now become the standard in this unique niche. Combining pre-event consulting on every detail leading up to a compelling and entertaining auction performance, they raised countless millions for charities nationwide. Colleen is delighted to be continuing this work and is honored to be a part of the ABS auction team.

Agnes Vojtko

Agnes Vojtko has established herself as a versatile and genuine artist in opera and on the concert stage. Born in Hungary, she completed a bachelor’s degree at the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest. She then moved to the United States as a Fulbright Fellow to attend the Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin, where she obtained the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts. Her vocal flexibility and magnetic dramatic presence are infused with the best from the Austro-Hungarian tradition and her American music training. A participant in the 2014 ABS Academy, she made her debut with American Bach Soloists in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (February & March, 2015).

Ms Vojtko made her opera debut to critical acclaim with Opera in the Heights’ production of Norma as Adalgisa. She has also appeared in Austin Lyric Opera’s Madame Butterfly as Mrs. Pinkerton, and in several productions of the Sarah and Ernest Butler Opera Center, which include Menotti’s The Medium (as Mrs. Nolan), Puccini’s Suor Angelica (as La Badessa), the American Premiere of Luis Jaime Cortez’s La Tentación de San Antonio (as Helena), Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (as Olga), and Peter Brook’s La Tragédie de Carmen (as Carmen), for which she was nominated for an Austin Critics Table Award. It is because of her “rich voice” (The Austin Chronicle) that Agnes delves into these roles with natural ease and grace. She has sung with the Ars Classica Chamber Opera as Fidalma in Cimarosa’s The Secret Marriage, as Second Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, as Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro, as Zerlina in Don Giovanni, as well as Proserpina in L’Orfeo with the Budapest Chamber Opera, and as Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea with the Sarah and Ernest Butler Opera Center. Recent highlights of her solo concert activity also include Mahler’s Songs of the Wayfarer, Donald Crockett’s The Cinnamon Peeler, and Mozart’s Mass in C Minor.

Ms. Vojtko’s talent and trajectory have earned her recognition at some of the most prestigious vocal competitions, including the Nyiregyhazi International Music Competition in Takasaki, Japan, the S. Mercadante International Singing Competition in Italy, the International Handel Competition in Hungary, the Handel Singing Competition in England, the Dallas Opera Guild, and the W. Stenhammar International Vocal Competition in Sweden. Because of her accomplished performance at this last event she was invited to sing at the Gala Concert of the Cairo Opera, where the press praised her as “tall, slender, and beautiful, with a captivating mezzo timbre.”

Lot 8: Private Concert in the Chapel of Grace

This is the rarest of the rare. Host your own private concert in the Chapel of Grace inside San Francisco’s historic Grace Cathedral for you and up to 100 of your friends. American Bach Soloists, under the direction of Maestro Jeffrey Thomas, will present a chamber ensemble for your magical once-in-a-lifetime concert. You’ll have the distinct honor to work with ABS Artistic Administrator Steven Lehning as you choose some of the music for your perfect concert. The entrance to the Chapel of Grace is on California Street at the site of the former stairway and front lawn of William H. Crocker’s mansion which was destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. This intimate chapel was the first part of Grace Cathedral to be completed in 1930. The 15 windows—designed by Charles J. Connick at the height of his career—were inspired by those in Sainte-Chapelle, Paris, and pair the cobalt blues, known as “Connick blue,” with red ruby backgrounds.

Tonight, the musicians, board, and staff ask you to support ABS through sponsorships of our upcoming season which includes our special holiday concerts, “Christmas Oratorio” and Messiah, as well as our subscription season that includes an all-Bach program, Handel’s Alexander’s Feast and Bach’s “Easter & Ascension Oratorios.” You may also choose to sponsor one of the young early-music talents who will attend the 2016 Academy.

American Bach Soloists strive to retain reasonable ticket prices even though sales cover only about 40% of the cost of presenting these outstanding concerts. Although ABS is proud to receive significant foundation and government support, the bulk of our contributed income comes from generous donations from individuals like you.

On Friday, December 18, 2015, have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to conduct the American Bach Soloists and American Bach Choir in a reading of the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah during the warm-up rehearsal in Grace Cathedral. Also included in this package are two section AA tickets to that evening’s performance.

Following the concert, join Maestro Jeffrey Thomas and mezzo-soprano Agnes Vojtko for cocktails and conversation at the Laurel Court Bar in San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel.

Lot 11: Back to Bach

Season Opening Night Dinner for Eight in MarinOn Friday, January 22, 2016, celebrate the opening of ABS’s 27th season with sparkling wine, fabulous food, and fellow Bach lovers! Eight lucky winners will enjoy a sumptuous four-course dinner at the home of Jan Goldberg & Ken Hoffman, prepared by Delicious! Catering. Not only is Jan the founder of Delicious! but she is also a long-time ABS supporter and Board member.

Enjoy conversations ranging from Bach to baseball, learn about Jan and her husband Ken’s eclectic collection of art, and enjoy the views of the Marin hills, all before heading to this season’s opening performance at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Belvedere.

The opening night concert is titled “Bach Favorites” and will include several great cantatas and a violin concerto. The highlight will be a performance of the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor by the 2016 Jeffrey Thomas Award recipient, Tatiana Chulochnikova in her own transcription for solo violin!

Conditions of Purchase: The Auction

1. American Bach Soloists (herein “seller”) reserves the right to refuse admission to or attendance at Sparkle.

2. The auctioneer is the agent for the seller.

3. These Conditions of Purchase, as amended by addendum or by oral announcement during the Auction, constitute the entire terms and conditions of seller with respect to the sale and purchase of the items listed herein. By bidding, the bidder agrees to be bound by these Conditions of Purchase.

4. Seller does not warrant or represent, expressly denies responsibility for, and in no event shall be responsible or liable for, the accuracy of the description of the items offered, or the correctness of the catalog, including but not limited to the quality or condition. All statements by the seller are merely statements of opinion and are not to be relied upon by prospective purchases as warranties or representations of fact. Prospective bidders, by so bidding, acknowledge that they have inspected the lots to their satisfaction and bid only as a result of their own inspection and opinion. Any perishable item such as wine, food, or the like is sold “as is.”

5. All bids are per lot as set forth in the catalog, unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer. Seller may distribute or combine any lot or lots at its sole discretion.

6. Seller may, at any time prior to the fall of the hammer, withdraw the lot from sale.

7. A suggested minimum price for each lot has been established and is listed in the catalog. Seller expressly reserves the right to bid on its own behalf up to and including the listed minimum bid.

8. Seller shall have the right to reject any bid, at any time prior to the fall of the hammer. Should a dispute arise between two bidders, or should the auctioneer doubt the validity of any bid, the auctioneer shall have the absolute right to resolve the dispute, re-offer, re-sell, or withdraw the lot in question.

9. No bid shall be valid unless it is acknowledged by the auctioneer. At the fall of the hammer, the highest acknowledged bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the lot and thereupon assume full risk and responsibility thereof.

10. Purchaser warrants that (s)he will pay the full purchase price and will sign a confirmation of purchase. Seller’s sole responsibility for non-delivery shall be limited to refund of the purchase price.

11. Bids, which are submitted to the seller in writing or otherwise left with the seller prior to the sale for execution by the seller, are tendered for the convenience of the bidders, but the seller shall not be responsible for failing to execute such bids or for errors relating to the execution of such bids.

12. Payment: Bidders shall arrange financing prior to sale with cash, check, or credit card. Proof of identify may be required. Full payment, in U.S. dollars, must be made at the conclusion of the auction and prior to the removal of the auction lots. Any sums not paid within seven days after the sale shall bear interest at the highest rate allowed by California law.

13. Should any dispute related to the Conditions of Purchase arise, the prevailing party shall be entitled to its reasonable attorney’s fees and cost.

14. All lots shall be removed from the premises following the close of the Auction.

15. No representative or employee of seller shall have the right to waive or modify any of the terms/conditions set forth herein, except that the seller’s authorized representative may do so by general announcement during the Auction.

16. All lots involving lodging and airline transportation may involve time restrictions. The purchaser agrees to abide by these restrictions. Any changes made by the purchaser are at the purchaser’s risk.
