Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s): The month of November brings about a focus on peace. On Remembrance Day, we are called to examine our conscience, and remind ourselves that we are called to be a peacemaker, through our words, beliefs and actions. Also in November as Catholics, we recognize two significant feast days. “All Saints Day” reminds us of those who lived faithful lives in the church and on “All Soul’s Day” we remember those who have died. We pray as a school community that the saints will help us live the gospel message, and to be people of peace, and that we will be reunited with those who have died one day in heaven, in full realization of God’s promise. On November 11th our school will gather in the gym to commemorate Remembrance Day. Ms. Couto Ms. Pavicic-Zupan and Ms. Brennan will be planning and co-ordinating a special Remembrance Day Celebration. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 AM. Please join us to pray, remember and celebrate peace. We wish to ensure that today’s young people understand and appreciate the sacrifices that others who have been called upon to make in defense of freedom and democracy that we enjoy today. During the month, teachers will be preparing Progress Reports and planning for Parent Teacher Conferences. Staff will continue to look at EQAO results and other student Data and plan for this school year. These results assist teachers in long range planning and to adjust the curricula to best suit the learning needs of their students. Progress reports communicate the student’s achievement and provide information that will encourage students to set goals for learning, help teachers and assist parents in supporting learning at home. Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on the evening of Thursday, November 13th and the morning of Friday, November 14th. We look forward to seeing you all! Curriculum Night

teacher. Curriculum night provides an opportunity to build on the partnership

between home and school that will assist in ensuring that the school year is a

successful one. It is an opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher as we

Offering each other the sign of peace during Mass is probably considered to be the “fun” part for some of our younger students. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, wherever they may be. Loving our neighbours has a global dimension in a shrinking world. The Gospel calls us to be peacemakers. Progress reports will be sent home Tuesday, November 11th, 2014. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held Thursday, November 13th, 2014 in the evening and Friday, November 14th, 2014 in the morning. Please ensure that you return the Parent/Teacher Conference Forms sent home earlier. Appointments will be booked on a first return first booked basis.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY DAY

Friday, November 14th, 2014 is a Professional Activity Day for Parent/Teacher Conferences. There will be no school for students on this day.

SAFETY PROCEDURES To help eliminate trespassers, reduce the traffic existing in the corridors at entry and dismissal times and prevent the unnecessary interruptions to the teaching/learning your child receives each day, we ask for your support and cooperation in adhering to the following procedures:

1. All visitors and parents are to report to the office. Students are to be picked up and dropped off in the playground.

2. If you are dropping off your child after the start of the school

day, please come to the office and report to the secretary.

3. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds for any reason unless they bring a written, signed and dated permission note from his/her parent, or unless a parent/guardian comes to pick up his/her child. If you are picking up your child before dismissal (i.e. for an appointment), please report to the office and sign your child out and wait for your child in the lobby.

4. If someone other than a parent or the usual caregiver for your

child is picking up your child, please advise your child’s teacher or the office through a phone call or a note.

5. If you are dropping off a lunch or other items during school

hours, please leave them at the office with your child’s name and teacher’s name.

6. If you have an appointment with a teacher or you would like to

make an appointment, please report to the office and our secretary will make the necessary arrangements.

7. In addition to the regular school day, please be aware that

playground supervision begins fifteen minutes before school begins 8:30 a.m. Please be aware that children who arrive before 8:15 a.m. and students who remain past 3:30 p.m. in the playground are not being supervised by teachers. Students who are participating in extra-curricular activities before and after school (i.e. school teams, clubs, extra assistance with school work etc.) are supervised by teachers.

If your child was absent, or if you were not happy with your child’s picture taken in October, please send a note to your child’s teacher requesting your child’s picture to be taken on Picture Re-Take. In addition, students from Grade 4 to 8 will be taking their class photos on that day.

Toronto Public Health Dental and Oral Health

Services Toronto Public Health (T.P.H.) provides dental programs to children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. To identify children with oral health problems, a screening program is offered to students in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Health requirements for mandatory health programs. The screening is an assessment by a dental hygienist using sterilized instruments. The dental hygienist will assess the need for tropical fluoride, scaling, sealant and any other obvious dental needs. As a follow up to the screening, only parents whose children are identified as requiring dental services will be notified. A note to that effect will be sent home with your child/ren for your information and action. You may also receive a phone call from the T.P.H. dental staff to assist you in accessing care. Please be advised that the screening assessment does not replace the dental examination done by a licensed dentist. If you do not wish your child/ren to be screened, please inform the school. PLANNING FOR SUCCESS It would seem that every month in a school is busy, but the end of October and November are our “building” months, which keep us especially busy. Our School Improvement Team (S.I.T.) has met with the task of analyzing our scores from EQAO, CAT, and third term report cards. We are in the process of updating our School Learning Plan which will provide the focus for our instruction, our purchasing, extra-curricular activities and our CSAC budget.

PRIMARY CHRISTMAS CONCERT

(JK-GRADE 3) Parents are invited to celebrate the joy of Christmas with the primary and kindergarten students at their concert Dec 17th at 7 pm. Tickets will be on sale at the end of November. More information will follow.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

On Tuesday October, 28th 2014. The Multiple Exceptionalities class participated in a 250m cross country race at Earl Bales Park. We were blessed with a beautiful

day and fun was had by all. All students were able to

participate and did their very best at the competition. The class had the opportunity to learn about sportsmanship

and to make new friends. A special mention goes to Katie C. who was able to win a third place medal in the girls (12 -

13 years) cross country race. We look forward to the track and field meet in the Spring. We would like to extend a

special thank you to Mr. Pitto (M.E. Teacher) and

Educational Assistant’s Ms. Pastore and Ms. Pantaleo for accompanying the class on their trip.

SECONDARY SCHOOL OPEN HOUSES An important decision made each year by our Grade 8 students and parents is selecting a high school. Last week our Grade 8 students received the Catholic Secondary School Application Forms. These application forms should be returned to the school by November 6, 2014. All Toronto Catholic District School Board secondary schools welcome Grade 8 students and their families to open houses each fall. This is an opportunity to meet some of the staff, check out school facilities and learn more about the various programs, services and activities as you prepare for Catholic secondary school education. HALLOWEEN FUN St. Jane Frances celebrated Halloween in style with help from Ms. Frydrych, Mr. Turco and Ms. Mercuri and the Grade 8 students who organized the dance for all to enjoy. A great time was had by all. The Grades J.K. to three students had a dance in the morning. The Juniors and Intermediates enjoyed the dance in the afternoon. Thank you to all students who bought a Pop-O-Gram. All proceeds from the dance will go to the Grade 8 Student Council. A special “Thank you” goes out to Mr. Pletzer – our School D.J. who contributed to making this event successful.

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER November brings with it the beginning of winter’s chill and - perhaps -

the first snow fall of the season. It is very important that your children dress appropriately. Please make sure that they come to school with a winter coat or snowsuit, a hat that can protect their ears, and gloves or mittens. An extra pair of shoes and socks is also useful.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:

FIRE DRILLS To help our students become familiar with the proper evacuation procedures, the school and fire department officials conduct fire drills on a regular basis. During these drills, students are directed by the teacher to leave the school promptly and in an orderly manner using their designated exit to the predetermined areas in the schoolyard. These exits are displayed in each room and students are informed of their location. Any other individuals who are in the building must also leave when the alarm sounds. Each teacher will confirm that his/her students are present. Three fire drills have already been held in the Fall, and another three will be held in the Spring.

LOCKDOWN There may be situations where the school, under the direction of the Police, may need to “lockdown”. The School Board has mandated that lockdown procedures be added to the school’s safety routines. Essentially the lockdown procedures attempt to secure students in their own classrooms in the event that there is a high risk incident about to unfold in the school or in dealing with the presence of an individual in possession of a dangerous article on school property. Lockdown procedures will be followed according to Board Policy. The school has already conducted a “Lockdown Procedure” drill in the Fall and one will be conducted in the Spring. When a lockdown has been initiated, all staff and students will follow the following actions:

All students and staff inside the building or in portables will remain in their classrooms

Students or staff in hallways or washrooms will be expected to go to the closest classroom

Students and staff will remain in the classroom until further instructions are given

All students and staff that are outside the building are to quickly move as far away from the building as possible and remain there until further instructions are provided. Teachers will review with their students these procedures to prepare them for the Lockdown Drill.

Celebrating 50 Years

At St. Jane Frances!

On Saturday, May 23, 2015, St. Jane Frances School will proudly

celebrate 50 years of excellence in Catholic Education. To

commemorate this golden anniversary, all members of the school

community – both past and present – will be invited to attend Mass

at St. Jane Frances Catholic Church followed by an Open House at

the school. Additional details regarding the day’s activities will be

shared in the coming months.

To help bring our history to life, we’re seeking school pictures

(e.g., class composites, athletic events, concerts, etc.) from the

past 50 years. These photos will be included in a special slideshow

to be shared at the Open House in the spring. If you have any

such pictures, we kindly ask you to visit our school Web site and

click the 50th Anniversary tab, where images can be uploaded for

school use.

Our Choir sang beautifully at our opening

School Mass on October 10th. They are currently rehearsing for the Remembrance

Day Assembly, themed "Praying for Peace", with over 30 regular members who practice on

Tuesdays at lunchtime. Students from grades 3

to 8 are welcome to come and share the gift of song. Our special project this year will be to

prepare for the 50th Anniversary celebrations!

Grades 4 and 5 students tell the story of their Musical Family Trees - see them on display

on the second floor!

Our Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2 and 3 students

are preparing for the upcoming Christmas Concert, December 17, 2014 at 7 PM - we

hope to see you there to celebrate the miracle of Jesus' birth with performances by your little

miracles!

Health Update—Ebola In response to Ebola concerns, staff from the Board’s Occupational

Health and Safety Department and Facilities Department have been

reviewing and auditing school cleaning, disinfection and infection control

measures since September 2014. Staff and students are reminded to wash

their hands frequently and cough into your sleeve. Staff are also working

closely with Toronto Public Health on monitoring school absenteeism.

The Board has posted resource material from the medical authorities on

Ebola.
