Newsletter No 20 Date: 28th June 2018

Tamika Colville – End Of Term Absence For the past two weeks, students in Year 2 have been taught by a range of existing College staff, as well as a terrific casual relief teacher, Miss Teagan Ainslie. This has been due to the absence of our valued Year 2 teacher Miss Colville who was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Miss Colville has been undertaking tests and attending appoint-ments so that she is fully able to understand her diagnosis and is extremely hopeful of returning to the Year 2 classroom on day one of term 3. We look forward to Miss Colville’s return to the College and wish her all the very best for her journey with MS. Early Finish Tomorrow For End Of Term Please ensure that plans are in place for our early finish for the end of term 2 tomorrow. Students will finish classes at the end of lesson 5 and be ready to board buses at 2:20pm, with buses leaving promptly at 2:30pm. This will mean that students will arrive at their bus stops approximately one hour before their usual time. Tomorrow is also a casual dress day run by the Student Representative Council with a gold coin donation to be made for casual dress. Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) During the first 3 weeks of next term, our College will be taking part in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC), which is a nationwide census of early childhood develop-ment and helps our school and community understand how children are developing be-fore they start school. This census focusses on our current Prep class, with Mrs Lister com-pleting the census based on her knowledge and observations of each child in the class. Further details of this census will be forwarded to current Prep parents at the beginning of term 3. Big Picture Field Trip As part of my current teaching of Year 7 and 8 Big Picture, I have thor-oughly enjoyed working with an enthusiastic group of 13 students to look further into our local area. This lead to us taking a small field trip on Monday to the Terrick Terrick National Park and also to Prairie Park where a group of students met with John and Faye Forbes. The Nation-al Park group met with Parks Victoria Ranger Lauren and learnt about the significance of the area as well as key points about the flora and fauna of the area. The Prairie Park group focussed their attentions on the influence and impact that John Forbes has had on the Loddon Val-ley Football and Netball League. After the holidays, both groups of students will present their findings to the class in the form of a Pecha Kucha, which is a PowerPoint presentation of 20 slides.

Ranger Talks and Adventures

If you are looking for a great kids activity for the upcoming holidays, then maybe a trip to Torrumbary Weir or

Wills Bend Campground is in order. Parks Victoria Ranger Lauren (the same Lauren mentioned above that thor-

oughly impressed us at Terrick Terrick on Monday) is running two sessions for kids aged 6 – 12 (ish) in which

they get to become a wildlife detective and learn more about the flora, fauna and landscapes around us. Lau-

ren is a wealth of knowledge and is very passionate about our National and State Parks. If this is something of

interest, log onto the junior rangers site at www.juniorrangers.com.au and book in before places fill. Sessions

are on the 3rd and 5th of July, between 10:00 and 11:00am.

Holiday Works Sepserve have been employed to carry out septic works at the College over the upcoming holiday period, which will see the College grounds out of action for the vast majority of the 2 weeks. An arborist will also spend time pruning trees during this period, and further termite baiting will take place in affected areas. The College will be a hive of activity during the holiday period, and will be unavailable for anything else during this time. This should have very minimal impact on members of the community, with the College opening again as per usual on day 1 of Term 3. The Big Lift The College will host 40 Sydney University students who will each complete 4 hours of work on minor projects for us between approx. 8am and 12pm on July 11th. We plan to welcome these students with a meal at the College on the evening of the 10th and encourage College community members to come along for the event if they are able to. Thanks are extended to our Parent’s Association who are assisting with a generous financial contribution towards food for this event. Works to be completed during this ‘big lift’ are being finalised today and if you feel that you may like to assist with this event or gain further details, please make contact with myself or Mr Wilkinson in the College Office.

Assistant Principal’s News

Its hard to believe that the term is at an end alrea…… hang on, no its not, let’s start again. This term feels like it

has dragged on a bit to tell you the truth. I’m a bit tired and getting grumpy, so I am looking forward to a couple

of weeks doing house related tasks, such as sitting on the couch. On the other side of the corridor, Mr Leed has

also stumbled to the end of the term, having had the last break spent with students on their exchange to Turkey.

He has been really brave, but let his guard slip recently and told me how tired he was, after not having a break

last holidays. The poor little pet. It's hard to believe that some people on earth have it even tougher than this.

Last week Miss Pilkington and I had the pleasure of accompanying the Year 11’s to their Melbourne Work Experi-

ence program. We had a ripper week, that included watching the kids learn to navigate the public transport sys-

tem, followed by eating out for lunch and dinner each night and drinking copious amounts of good coffee. I even

got to read a novel during daytime. If you ever see anyone doing this, its probably a teacher on a Work Experi-

ence camp. It was such a great week. Our students soon became savvy navigators of the city and surrounds and

could possibly survive on their own now, in the big smoke, if they had to. All reports from employers were ex-

tremely positive. I was so impressed with the little things that our students were doing that made them stand

out as good employees. An example of this was when I visited Steven V who was working at the CSIRO labs in

Parkville. On my arrival, Steven was on a break. The other Work Experience students from different schools,

were slumped on their chairs peering at phone screens, whilst Steven’s posture more like a person’s and he was

following our agreed rule of no phones at work. It’s the little things that make people stand out. Other high-

lights; Jack S put in an 11 hour day with an electrician, which was no doubt a shock to the system…pun intended.

Tameeka’s supervisor also mentioned that she doesn’t usually accept students but couldn’t resist because

Tameeka had ‘cold called’ her. She thought that was a really mature and brave thing to do. Thanks so much to

Pilko for organising this valuable camp.

Early finish tomorrow, buses leave at 2:30pm. Please arrange bus pick ups accordingly (1 hour early). If you are

looking for some cheap babysitting over the holidays, Golden Square Footy and Netball club run a 3 day holiday

program, next week Mon/Tue/Wed. All inclusive of lunch/snack/activities. See attached flyer for more info. All

welcome.

Oh yeah I nearly forgot, I had the pleasure of joining the year 7 class yesterday in their introductory lesson to the

novel “Hatchett”. This is a story of survival and as such Mrs Fleming had the kids making shelter and trying to

start fire.. The kids were right in to it and I was interested to see if it was actually possible to light fire without

matches or lightning. Steph D was being very patient and almost had a flame. It was painstaking to watch as the

kids were so close. I did the pushy parent thing and had a go myself to prove that it was possible and unexpect-

edly, actually started fire, from flint and steel. No matches, lightning or petroleum product. At the first sight of

flame, I raised my arms in the air and declared ‘I am a man!’. I was very proud and peacocking, until Mrs Fleming

replied dryly, ‘FINALLY’. I made fire. I cant believe it.

Assembly News At our Assembly, a second group of Year 1 students performed a play. On this occasion, Travis, Oliver, Tom and Jess performed the traditional tale- The Great Enormous Turnip. Well done to our performers. Reading Clubs - You don’t become a good sportsperson by sitting around and you don’t become a good reader if you don’t regu-larly practise. Just as we need to exercise our bodies to stay fit, we also need to exercise our brain through activi-ties such as reading. We become better readers by reading!

from the students and their supportive families.

Prep Sounds in Focus This week, our students are learning about the ‘Hh’ (Name is correctly pronounced ‘aitch’, not ‘haitch’) and the ‘Kk’. Please take the opportunity to practise letter names and sounds with your child during the holidays as ‘phonemic awareness’ remains an important strategy when predicting unfamiliar words and monitoring, and is essential for ‘sounding through’ when writing. Prep Words To Fluency The words to fluency are the days of the week. There are You Tube clips that can help reinforce these. JETS GYM Thanks to Mrs Maxted for organising the two excursions to Jets Gym and applying for the grants so that the events were cost free to families. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experiences provided by the instructors and the tremendous array of equipment. Coliban Water – Water Wise Program At school, our Preps joined in a Water Wise session sponsored by Coliban Water. A very dry season is a good re-minder of the importance of conserving our precious (and expensive) water reserves. Educating about this im-portant understanding and practice needs to start young. Thanks to Mrs Lister for supporting this initiative. Literacy Hints Mrs Lister has been training as a Reading Recovery teacher and brings valuable knowledge and ideas back to school, which are then implemented in the Program and shared with other staff. One of the focus areas last week was on developing fluency. With beginning readers it is important to break a sentence into small phrases and read these smoothly, rather than focusing on, and reading, one word at a time. It is extremely important for our begin-ning readers to read easier texts to practise developing fluency and to read these a number of times. When prac-tising the book a few times, the focus shifts from word recognition to reading smoothly and using punctuation to inform pausing. We have earlier talked about the important of students developing ‘return sweep’ (not stopping at the end of every line but training the mind and eyes to scan the words on the beginning of the next line). East Loddon was one of the first schools in Australia to adopt and fund the Reading Recovery Program and it is reward-ing to watch many of the participants go on to do well in VCE and VCAL. Piano Recitals At our P-4 Assembly last Friday, we were privileged to be entertained by two of our tal-ented young piano students, Georgia and Keira. They showcased their growing talent and their renditions of musical pieces were excellent. Learning notation is a great introduction to music and skills gained through piano are readily transferred to other instruments. Irina currently has some places available for piano students and parents wishing to enrol their child for either individual, or small group instruction (at a reduced cost) should contact Irina through the College Office. On Stage Performance A group of Year 1 students entertained our gathering with the play ‘The Great Enormous Turnip’. The play was thoroughly enjoyed by all who watched. Student Journals Student Journals, for those who returned them, will go home tomorrow for you to read with your child. These should be read in conjunction with information provided in the reports. Please complete the Parent/ Guardian section and return them to school first week of Term 3. Due to Miss Colville temporary absence, the Year 2 Jour-nals will not be finalised until early next Term and we know that you understand. College Fair - We need your help If you have not already done so, the holidays provide a great opportunity for the family to sit down and contem-plate how you can contribute to our major fundraiser for the year. The P-4 stall has crafts, plants and garden items, food and virtually anything else that someone might want to buy. We really need every family to contribute something. Today the Year 5’s and 6’s went to Jets Gymnastics and they had a great time, thank you to

Mrs Maxted for organising the day. We also had some students from the Middle Years go

to the German poetry competition and they all did well and some students got 1st, 2nd or

3rd. We are going to have a short assembly tomorrow to hand out attendance award for

those who have 100% attendance for Term 2. Tomorrow we also have a casual clothes day

which will be a gold coin donation, all of the money raised will go to repainting the lines on

the tennis court. Have great holidays!

Victorian State Schools Spectacular We are proud and excited to have some of our students participating in the 2018 Victorian State Schools Spectacular: With the Beat. This year’s Spectacular will be held at Hisense Arena on Saturday 15 September, with two shows at 1pm and 6:30pm. The journey of exploration will see Hisense Arena transformed into a mystical Venetian masquerade ball, a wondrous Steam Punk Fairground in a cornucopia of new and old mixed together. There is something for everyone’s musical taste in this year’s show, from Macklemore, Imagine Dragons, Sheppard, Tim Minchin, Beyonce, to Karl Jenkins. Talented young skaters, skate boarders, BMX riders, puppeteers, musicians, dancers and singers will feature on stage, while many other students will work behind the scenes, gaining unique, on-the-job, professional experience. This program – managed by the Department of Education and Training – helps to develop each student’s performance skills, discipline, perseverance, cooperation and confidence under the training of industry professionals. For a fun, family entertainment experience, and to cheer on our students from the audience, be quick to secure tickets. Tickets go on sale 9am Thursday 19th July via the Ticketek website or call 1300 364 001. Adults $40, Concession $30, Children (under 15) $20. Deutsche Nachrichten Yesterday students from East Loddon P-12 College participated in the Regional Final of the AGTV German Poetry

Competition at Crusoe College. Students represented the school very well. In Year 9, Oscar H came 1ST and Zoe L

came 3RD. In Year 8, Rory C came 3rd. In Year 7, Jye R came 2rd. In Year 6. Charlize S came 2rd and Isaac J came 3rd.

In Year 5, Ava M came 1st and Marley A came 2rd. In Year 4, Emily S came 2rd and Brayden K came 3rd. Gut ge-

macht. Students who came first or second have the opportunity to represent the East Loddon in the State Final, on

Saturday, 18th August. Well done to all the other students who were selected to participate in the Regional Final. All

students were able to recite their German poem by heart. Fantastisch. A very BIG Danke Schὂn to Herr Leed who

drove the community bus and to Frau Mac who also drove students down to Crusoe College.

Senior School News

University and TAFE Open Days

Information about the upcoming university and TAFE open days across Victoria was included in the Year 10, 11 &

12 reports package yesterday. Please have a look at these dates. They are a great way for students to see first

hand what the university or TAFEis really like. I strongly encourage students who are considering tertiary study or

are unsure of future pathways to visit potential tertiary institutions. If you require another copy please let me

know.

VET Taster Day at Charlton

Last Friday Harley, Courtney, Hayley and I travelled to Charlton to experience a variety of VET subjects to poten-

tially study in 2019. VET or Vocational Education Training involves practical models as well as a theoretical compo-

nent that works towards a certificate in a particular trade. Harley’s favourite class was VET Sport and Recreation.

Courtney’s favourite class was VET Beauty Therapy and Hayley really enjoyed VET Animal Studies.

VCE Units 3 & 4 study lectures

Myself and individual subject teachers have been promoting a range of VCE study lectures held over the July

break, typically in Melbourne. I commend students that are taking up these opportunities and look forward to

hearing about your experiences. They are often held at tertiary institutions, which is again as mentioned above a

great way to check out the facilities.

Year 10 Empowerme

Empowerme is a one day workshop that our Year 10 students have been invited to. The day specifically focuses on

self-development, personal reflection and realising potential. The day is about students realizing their strengths,

challenging their thinking and working out what direction they want to go and providing students with the tools to

get there.

The cost of the day is partially being subsidised by the school. Students are required to pay $20.

The company organizing the day will contact Year 10 families directly via email to obtain consent.

School Council student representatives

Congrats to Jo and James our College Captains who have also recently been promoted

to School Council members as part of a school initiative to have great student voice as

part of our decision making processes. Well done, Jo and James. I think you will advo-

cate appropriately and thoughtfully for our students.

Happy July break Wishing everyone a warm, restful and relaxing July break from

school. My tip to students with homework would be to set yourself a plan of what you need to do. Allocate time to

complete this, but also include in your schedule some nice things to do and some rewards to keep you motivated.

week. Well done to you all for stepping out of your comfort zone.

Work Experience is an integral part of building on work skills and that all important resume building for when students seek

future employment.
