Thankyou Year 5 and 6! Unbeknown to many, last Friday was a significant day for all Principal Class members and all watermelons, with National Principal’s Day and National Watermelon Day falling on Friday August 3rd. A special thankyou is extended to all Year 5 and 6 students who made myself and Mr Wilkinson feel very special with their kind words and thoughtful gifts to celebrate the occasion. These special occasions are generally not something that we celebrate overtly, but we do very much appreciate the gesture from these students.

Community Table-Tennis – Starts This Monday Evening Local lady Dot Humbert has recently advertised the idea of ‘community table-tennis’, and this Monday night from 8:00pm will see the hosting of the first week of social table-tennis for those who are interested. The table-tennis will run for the next 4 weeks on a Monday evening with a charge of $2.00 per person to participate. If you are interested in participating in this social event, please make contact with Dot on 54 366 382.

Welcome Aboard Alan! The College is very excited to welcome Alan Paterson onto our Wellbeing Team. Alan has been working in the College each Tuesday this term and will continue in a one day per week capacity. Alan is a qualified teacher and an experienced Welfare Officer who last worked at East Loddon approx. 5 years ago. He has worked in a range of settings and adds a tremendous amount of experience, knowledge and expertise to our wellbeing team, complementing the terrific work that Wendy Twigg, Sue Allen and Denise Leed already do.

Parent Opinion Survey At the end of last week we posted out 80 Parent Opinion surveys to randomly selected families of the College as part of the annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training. This survey is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies, and should you be one of the lucky families who receive a survey, we would very much appreciate you taking the time to get online and complete the survey. The survey should take 10-15 minutes to complete and can be completed on any internet enabled device (iPad, Desktop or Laptop, Smartphone). Parents are assured that all responses are completely confidential with the survey conducted anonymously. Apologies are extended to anyone who may again receive a survey, after receiving one in 2017 (This is bound to occur!).

Lions Junior Public Speaking – Regional Finals Amy T and Emily S will represent East Loddon at the regional finals of the Lions Junior Public Speaking Competition in Pyramid Hill on Sunday August 19th. I am sure that both students will once again do a tremendous job and we wish them all the very best for this next level of competition.

Private Piano Sessions

The College has an experienced piano teacher who currently has availability to offer further lessons. If you have a

child who is interested in undertaking private piano lessons at the College, please make contact with the Office

for further details.

Opportunity For Private Social Work Counselling At The College On the back of the successful implementation of private speech sessions at the College, we would like to make College parents and guardians aware of the possibility of private social work counselling. If we receive enough interest, accredited mental health social worker Anna Garlick of RED BIRD ROOM, will provide this private service from the College on a designated day of the week. This private arrangement would allow for students to see a qualified worker discretely at the College, rather than rely on a parent or guardian to make a trip to Bendigo or Echuca for the same service. Being able to access a quality service at the College has proven to be most beneficial with private speech sessions and we expect that this would be the case once again, with students missing only an hour of class, rather than a half or whole day accessing the service. If interested, please take a look at Anna’s letter below and either make contact directly with her on the num-ber or email provided, or make contact with myself for more details.

Science week 2019 – Game Changers and Change Makers: Science week has come around quickly again! Next week, our senior Science students will welcome our junior scientists into the lab to run a range of experiments! These will range from Physics on the central lawn to Slime dancing on a speaker! Our junior Scientists will also use their Science lesson time researching about a game changer, or change makers in the Science world. These will be on display Friday lunch time in the Multi-Purpose Room. One lucky researcher will be chosen and awarded a free trip to the Science room for them and two friends (Experiments included!) We are also really excited to welcome Kath from Catalyst Metals Limited into the College on Thursday to speak with all students from Prep to 12 about gold mining, and the current works that are happening in our local area. Parents are welcome to attend, please contact me for further information if you are interested. I’m looking forward to another great and informative Science week! Thanks for your support and interest in Science, Sarah Pilkington Science learning area leader.

Assistant Principal’s News Last Friday was Principal’s day and can I thanks the Year 5 and 6 classes who made some really lovely and thoughtful cards and presents for Mr Leed and I. It’s funny that sort of stuff, I always thought ‘Principal’s day’ comes in the same bag as ‘teachers day’ and ‘children’s day’ and to be honest it does. We get paid every two weeks to thank us for the work we do and we also get the occasional thank you from parents and students, which is a great reward, however, it was nice to get a surprise thank you from the groups mentioned above. My particular favourite present was a deflated volleyball that Ned and Cade had fashioned in to a hat for me. They made me wear it during reading time. Nice work guys, nice!

Get ready for this again and again, because I am going to keep banging on about it. The Fete is coming. Next week is week 5 and during week 10 we have the Fete. This means you need to get cracking on a few things. I have a particular interest in these Fete activities

The EastLoddibald Prize. You will need to get $10 to the Office to enter this portraiture competition. There are budding artists all over our catchment and we would strongly encourage you to encourage them to enter. Maybe you are one of these people- encourage yourself. Canvas supplied by the school are standard size and must be used. Medium is anything, from crayon to oil painting etc. Please draw some-one from the community. So far entrants include Mrs Heaslip and myself. This means if you enter you are guaranteed at least 2nd place. This will be voted on by the public on Fete day. Prize to be decided, probably voucher.

Cream puff cook off. This is a baking competition open to all. We all know someone who makes the best version of this diabetes delight. Encourage them to enter. Prize of a voucher is up for grabs and entry fee is $5. BARGAIN way to show off your skills. School Council President and MMM radio star Richard Hicks has offered to be a judge again, so inside info would say, butter him up and you are halfway there.

Rocker cover racers. I have three cars ready and am looking at 1 more this year, so as I can get last through to 4th last places. This is also $5 entry with a winner take all trophy. See if you can beat Lachie James’ blue thunder. (or was it Adam James). A good excuse to get in the shed with your kids, make a project and compete together. There is a rule list which is a mile long but in short you want a rocker cover less than 750mm long and 300mm wide. Max weight 4kg, wheels don’t protrude more than half a wheel in front or behind car. Max wheel diameter 165mm. No ballast (Nick Marlow). The rest is common sense.

LET IT BE KNOWN- I LOVE FETE DAY

Have a good weekend, Carlton are ordinary again

Prep Words To Fluency

Please continue to reinforce the 100 most frequently used words to build word recognition and fluency.

P-4 Excursion Rochester Road and Farm Safety Expo - Tuesday 21st August

Today your child should have brought home a notice, including a consent form. The cost of the excursion is $11

which covers bus transport, please note there are no other costs involved. Next week’s Newsletter will contain

additional details about the day.

LITERACY

Encourage your child to read beyond the books they bring home from school. We are surrounded by print and it

is important that students learn to make connections between skills learnt at school and applying them to real

life situations. That involves encouraging them to read everything from TV guides, magazines and cereal boxes to

road and shop signs. Write messages on whiteboards or notes in lunchboxes. The internet has a wealth of stories

suitable for children and you could also encourage them to read for a purpose by following a recipe to cook

something the family can enjoy (hopefully).

Language Sessions

We have been fortunate to have Grace Thompson (Regional Speech pathologist) working with our Prep and Year

1 classes each fortnight. Grace has been teaching ‘Colourful Semantics’, an approach for developing good sen-

tence structure.

Playground Update

One of our College groundskeepers, Ricky, recently added some pipes and a

container to the sandpit to make the sand play, with an extensive irrigation

system, so much more exciting. Thanks for the initiative, Ricky.

PREPS 100 Days of Learning Making a tower with 100 cups

The Preps celebrated their 100 days of learning on Wednesday. Every day for the last 100, students have been counting down for this day to arrive. They participated in activities about the number 100. Making a paper chain with 100 links, counting by 5s to 100 by cutting out hand prints and completing a 100 number chart, jigsaw puzzle. The challenge for the occasion was who could build the highest tower using 100 plastic cups. A question was asked, ‘Are you taller than 100 unifix blocks?’ In writing they wrote about - “When I am 100 years old I …….. will sit on a chair all day. I will be wrinkly.” –Joseph

“When I am 100 years old I ….. will shave my hair and I will have a walking stick. I will stay in

bed all day. I will have grey hair that I will shave.” –Jack

“When I am 100 years old I …. am wrinkly and grey and sleeping in my bed all day. I am going

to be rich.” – Charlotte.

“When I am 100 years old I …. will have lots of wrinkles and have lots of spots and I will have

no hair.” – Penny

“When I am 100 years old I …. will be bald and be in bed.” – Henry.

Collecting and recycling unused or broken mobile phones Our Grade 3 students have been learning and discussing how we can make a difference in our environment and world. The class has decided for the remainder of the term to collect as many old or broken mobile phones as we can and see if we can beat our record of 47 mobiles collected in 2016 by the end of this term. You may ask use yourself why? Here is a list of facts that we hope will persuade you to help us on this quest.

Every year, up to 250 Million mobile phones are replaced worldwide by new models. A recent survey by Nokia covering 13 countries suggests that, although only 4% of users’

old mobiles are actually thrown away and wasted on landfill, still less are actually recycled.

The vast unsung majority are left at home and forgotten about – 44% of old phones are just laying around people’s homes. Eight million mobiles were recycled in the UK in 2009. Mobile phone recycling can help in many ways. Australian mobile phone recycling campaign ‘Old Phones, More Trees’ has in

two years resulted in 175,000 trees being planted from the proceeds of recycling over 56 tonnes of mobile phones and accessories.

One tonne of old mobile phones can yield 150 grams of gold. That’s 30 times more than a tonne of ore from a gold mine, preserving the planet’s precious resources.

Recycling mobile phones will help stop the habitat destruction (like the orangutans in Sumatra and Borneo) in the search for precious metals.

Recycling old phones is so easy. So dig out your old mobiles and drop them into the yellow mail box in the office. Let’s see how many we can collect before the end of the term. Thanks from the Grade 3 Students.

LEVI R—OUR OWN RESIDENT PUBLISHED AUTHOR

The Bendigo Writers Festival “Young Writers Anthology” is in its third year. This

is a collection of short stories submitted by people aged between 8 and 16. Over

250 entries were submitted, and Levi in Year 8 was one of the 30 winning

submissions to get his work published.

His short story “Uncharted Ground” is about a young girl exploring a post-

apocalyptic world from which she has been protected her whole life. A signed

copy will be available in our school library shortly.

This was something that was promoted through the school and Levi’s parents

encouraged him to enter. He only completed his final copy 2 hours before the

final submission closed.

DENTAL HEALTH WEEK, 6-10 AUGUST 2018

The Australian Dental Health Asso-

ciation says that cleaning your

teeth after every meal and visiting

your dentist on a regular basis, not

only helps to prevent tooth decay

and other oral problems, but can

also prevent gum disease; which

can increase your risk of serious

health problems such as heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

Students participating in the Dental Health Week Promotion, receiving

toothbrushes and toothpaste from Leanne Welsh.

65% of Australians haven’t seen a dentist in the last 2 years

Under 50% of Australians only brush once-a-day.

Nearly 40% never floss between their teeth

And just over 73% of young people are consuming too much sugar.

Unfortunately, many people do not visit

their dentist regularly.

But, we encourage you to make the ef-

fort to help your teeth.

We only get one set and we need to

look after them.

Above Photo: Sue Allen, Denise Leed, Leanne Welsh and students with the

Dental Health Week Promotion at East Loddon College. Free toothbrushes,

toothpaste, water, yoghurt, and apples were handed out. Displays of ‘healthy

food options’ and ‘how much sugar is in our food’ created some interesting

conversations.

Our P-6 students can receive free or subsidised dental

treatment by the “Teeth On Wheels Program” which is com-

ing to our school on the 27th August, just by completing and

returning the Consent Forms by Monday 13th August. N.B.

Late forms will not be accepted!

KFC – Kids Friday Club Term 3

KFC for Term 3 is set to start on Friday August 24th and continue on August 31st, September 7th and 14th with

our Annual Bush Olympics at Bears Lagoon on Sunday August 16th. A KFC newsletter will be distributed in

the next week or so.

All Prep to Year 6 students are welcome to come along to KFC. For registration forms or enquiries please

contact one of the leaders listed below.

During Term 3, KFC will be running its annual fund raiser for charity. We usually do a ‘Loose Change Chal-

lenge’ (collect loose change) but this year we are supporting 2 Pairs Each. Josh Berry, a 12 year old boy,

started 2 Pairs each when he was 9 in an endeavour to care for the homeless by supplying pairs of warm

socks. His aim is to provide 50,000 pairs of socks and is on track with nearly 19,000 pairs already. So, KFC
