Building a Brand – The Indian Terrain Way

Mr Venkatesh RajagopalChairman and Managing Director,Indian Terrain Fashions Ltd.

LIBA was happy to host Mr Venkatesh Rajgopal,Chairman & MD, The Indian Terrain Ltd at theBeyond Management Initiative Session held on2nd August 2017.

Born in a family of Civil Servants, Mr VenkateshRajagopal did his post-graduation in Economicsand joined the civil services as an IPS Officer. Heserved for 10 years and then began his secondinnings as an entrepreneur. In the year 2000, MrRajgopal launched 'Indian Terrain' to cater to theneeds of domestic markets. It was listed in theyear 2011. Indian Terrain has today grown to be a

truly national brand with its presence firmlyestablished across the entire country. The brand istoday one of the three top casual wear Brands in thecountry and has currently recorded retail revenues ofRs.500 crores.

He says that building a clothing brand from thescratch is painstaking, emotional, something thatcannot be scaled up and does not count on overnightsuccess. He fondly recalls how his brand thatmanufactures both style and design, started 17 yearsago. Like most brands, Indian Terrain too wentthrough the rough terrains of any product life cycle, facing problems related to the setup of themanufacturing plant, sourcing of raw materials, establishing the distribution channels and mostimportantly, competing with international brandslike U S Polo. The first outlet that was opened at TTKRoad, Chennai is till today the best retail and flagshipstore. Slowly the brand started occupying space inthe retail environment of Multi Brand Outlets, wherethe Indian consumer redeems an international senseof being. The aesthetics and emotions laid out well inthe stores, the way the clothes were displayed, drewthe attention of customers and convinced them to trythe brand. He partly owes the success of this ventureto the strong retail distribution network it has builtover the years. The fashion genre that Mr Rajgopalventured into was the 'American Sportswear'. Thisgenre gave him the opportunity to target themasculine faces of the country who were graduallyevolving their styles to fit both arenas of play andwork. The brand itself is known for the ensemble ofmany individual pieces that are put together, tomatch the expectation and emotionally connectwith the customer.

When asked about women's apparel, he recollectsthat they had earlier committed the mistake ofentering that segment. As far as he knows, the Indianwomen were spoilt for choice and it's never easy totarget that segment with the genre he wasspecializing in. He admits that the story of the IndianTerrain has begun only now with a proper launchplatform in place. Building resilience and deliveringthe promise of his brand will always remain thebiggest challenges the brand faces.

The energy levels in the roomwere rising high the minute DrSuresh Ramanathan startedh i s t a l k o n C o n s u m e rBehaviour at Loyola Instituteof Business Administration atthe Guest Lecture session on16th August 2017.

Dr Ramanathan who holds his PhD in Marketingfrom Stern School of Business at New York is also agraduate from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhiand Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Withhis rich experience in both academia and industry,he kept the students engrossed throughout. “The'notion' of customer experience is vital in anybusiness but a company focusing on giving a goodprice on it isn't just enough in this hyper competitiveworld,” mentioned Mr Suresh who gave Reliance Jioas a reference.

He says no advantage will last a company for morethan three months and efficiency isn't a strategicdifferentiator. “Are we truly differentiated in thevalue given to the customer?,” questions theprofessor who says strategic herding is the majorproblem we face and the whole industry faces it likethe Telecom industry currently is. 'Should thecompany focus on customer satisfaction?' and theresponses from the audience were varying from abig yes to maybe. He says the term customersatisfaction is the most inane term used widely. Thestate of satisfaction doesn't push the customer toexcitement rather a sense of calm, he explains. “It isa cognitive construct and it cannot be measured inthese after-service surveys that many companies do.It should be on understanding of what the customerexactly wants,” says Dr Suresh who stresses that theconventional CRM in companies shouldn't just betreated as a software in the company.

Dialogue is the Key to Negotiations

Prof George KohlrieserOrganizational and Clinical Psychologist &Professor Organizational Behaviour –International Institute of ManagementDevelopment (IMD), Switzerland

“Learn to accept another person's perspective”,said Prof. George Kohlrieser, while addressingLIBAstudents.

It was an illuminating and engaging experiencefor the students of Loyola Institute of BusinessAdministration (LIBA), Chennai, when ProfGeorge Kohlrieser, an America-born clinical andorganizational psychologist, author, speaker, consultant and a professor of Leadership andOrganizational Behavior at the InternationalInstitute for Management Development (IMD)based in Lausanne, Switzerland addressed thestudents on the topic 'High performanceleadership' at the Beyond Management Initiativesession held on 30 August 2017.

Prof Kohlrieser brought to light the importance ofyouth leadership and stressed on a leadership basedon dialogue and bonding.

Leadership starts with leading one's self. A trueleader must have control on his or her emotions andthoughts. Having been a part of over 100 hostagenegotiations, Prof Kohlrieser mentioned that“leadership's key challenge lies in bonding with thepeople you don't like”. This challenge can only bemet by getting rid of a tribal mindset which keepscategorizing people as 'them'or 'us'.

Human brain is fundamentally negative. It is atpeace only when it is sure that there is no fear orpain. Keeping the brain vibrant and positive is atough task. One way of doing so is by finding asecure base. A secure base can be a person, place, goal or object that provides a sense of comfort.

“Leaders need to let go off their ego. Leading is aboutserving, it is a human process”, says Prof Kohlrieser.Today's business leaders need to become securebases for their employees. There is a need to leadfrom the mind's eye, interweaving dialogue andbonding in the leadership fabric.

In his special message for India, Prof Kohlrieser said,“Indian leaders need to be inspirational drivers ofchange. While there is a need for the women in Indiato fight for their rights and stand their ground, themen also need to learn to bond and show emotions”.

A Visit to Remember13 August, 2017th

“ " is a library ofLittle Sister's Home for the Agedhuman books with a happy cover page, but eachwith an agonizing story. The happy chapters takethe road not taken and reach a tragic ending. Isn'tit depressing that the little fingers that had onceheld the warm hands of their parents'has left themin solitary severing the affectionate parentalbond.

Like the white dot on the 'Yin-Yan', the LittleSisters provide a very pleasant home for the loneaged people. They bring all the companionlessinto a new small family of love and care. Theytake up begging with a charming smile on theirfaces to provide a cheerful home for the aged. Thehuge home with a beautiful chapel is a veil on theface of education and ethics going in vain. Thefirst visit organised by the forLIBA Radius Clubthe year 2017 was worth our Sunday noon.Making someone smile costs us nothing, instead itshowers abundance of blessings. The bunch ofthirty five happy souls of LIBA sparkled thestardust of positivity on all the beaming agedinmates at the home. Some deep thoughts wereshared and we got a chance to have a one on one

interaction with a few of them. Brimming withpositivity, the happy bunch was able to console theaching souls by sharing a hug and a few words ofkindness.

The aged inmates at the Home were taught to fendfor themselves to give them a sense of belonging. They held themselves in small chores like cuttingvegetables, cleaning windows etc. An organisedculture was followed within the home. It wassurprising to see them carry their own baskets withtheir belongings to the dining hall for lunch. Thecalm dining environment was transformed into anenvironment of fun and frolic with loud happy songssung by us. A prayer was said to the Almighty aboveseeking for blessings and wisdom to the youngminds. It is very clear to all who visited the old agehome that, all the inmates are there, not for the loveof being away from home and independent butbecause there is no better alternative left for them, once they are neglected and unwanted in theirhomes by their own children. This made us take aninner peaceful pledge out of self-realization, ofbeing the guardian angels to our parents whonurture us and shower infinite love on us.
