1 FROM THE (OTHER) VICAR As explained in previous editions of this magazine, from this coming September Andrew Cinnamond, Vicar of Lechlade, will be sharing with John Partington in the oversight of the CHEQS churches. (John is already working in Kempsford, Whelford and Castle Eaton in addition to the CHEQS churches.) Andrew writes: I feel honoured to be taking on the pastoral responsibility for Eastleach and Southrop, while remaining as vicar of Lechlade. As you know, the CHEQS group of parishes will remain together, but will now have two members of the clergy involved in their pastoral care. We live in a very beautiful part of the world with many ancient parish churches, which are a powerful testament to a living, breathing presence of the Christian Church in our local communities. There are many terrifically committed and dedicated people who ensure that services take place, church buildings are cared for and baptisms, weddings and funerals are taken in a dignified and caring way. I am very much looking forward to meeting many of you over the coming months and sharing our ‘partnership in the Gospel’. That is a phrase that the apostle Paul uses in his letter to the Philippian believers, which I think summarises that communal working-togetherness that is such a feature of a healthy church. We are all part of the same spiritual body with Christ as the head. My role as vicar is not to impose or dictate, but to encourage the different members to use their gifts and ability for the benefit of the whole body. We live in an increasingly fractured and troubled nation with many challenges ahead. As Her Majesty the Queen commented in her recent birthday message, “it is difficult to escape a very sombre national mood” –but I still sincerely believe that the Christian Church, headed by the Prince of Peace, has a hugely important role to play in our nation’s life. I continue to pray that our church communities will be places of light and hope for all people. Regards Andrew Cinnamond Another member of the Team clergy who is sometimes to be seen leading worship, or involved in other ways, in the CHEQS parishes is Lynn Hayler. She writes this month on page three.

FROM THE (OTHER) VICAR

As explained in previous editions of this magazine, from this coming September

Andrew Cinnamond, Vicar of Lechlade, will be sharing with John Partington in

the oversight of the CHEQS churches. (John is already working in Kempsford,

Whelford and Castle Eaton in addition to the CHEQS churches.) Andrew writes:

I feel honoured to be taking on the pastoral responsibility for Eastleach and

Southrop, while remaining as vicar of Lechlade. As you know, the CHEQS group

of parishes will remain together, but will now have two members of the clergy

involved in their pastoral care.

We live in a very beautiful part of the world with many ancient parish churches,

which are a powerful testament to a living, breathing presence of the Christian

Church in our local communities. There are many terrifically committed and

dedicated people who ensure that services take place, church buildings are cared

for and baptisms, weddings and funerals are taken in a dignified and caring way.

I am very much looking forward to meeting many of you over the coming months

and sharing our ‘partnership in the Gospel’. That is a phrase that the apostle Paul

uses in his letter to the Philippian believers, which I think summarises that

communal working-togetherness that is such a feature of a healthy church. We are

all part of the same spiritual body with Christ as the head.

My role as vicar is not to impose or dictate, but to encourage the different

members to use their gifts and ability for the benefit of the whole body. We live in

an increasingly fractured and troubled nation with many challenges ahead. As Her

Majesty the Queen commented in her recent birthday message, “it is difficult to

places of light and hope for all people.

FROM THE REGISTERS

Our love & prayers are with the families & friends of Alice Beale and Diana

Holmes, whose funerals we conducted recently.

New members are always welcome. Numbers cost £12 for the year (pro rata if

EASTLEACH VILLAGE SERVICE

Our village service this year will be on Sunday 30th at 11.00 am in St. Andrew’s

Church. It’s informal with lots of singing of cheerful hymns, each of which has

been chosen by people from Eastleach. And the prayers will be read by villagers,

too. Please come bringing your whole family – grandparents to babies – and your

friends. And please stay for a drink and refreshments afterwards. John Exelby

from Fyfield and Roger Scoones, our own local retired clergyman, will be leading

the service.

HATHEROP C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL

Summer terms are always the busiest – full of lots of lovely activities – but they

are also a term of change as the Year 6 pupils look to leaving primary school. We

are always sad to say goodbye to pupils we have known for seven years. They

have become part of the family of Hatherop Primary School and whilst we

celebrate their unique contributions to the school, we will miss them. We hope

they will take with them many memories including most recently: winning the

Small Schools Football Tournament (the first time a Year 5/6 team has won in

fifteen years, and a testimony to the team spirit that characterizes these pupils);

being joint winners at Fairford Festival’s Cooking Competition with a delicious

Indian curry dish; the memory of Arts Week, working together to create a

wonderful exhibition with the rest of the school alongside the Fresh Air Sculpture

Show; and not forgetting the teamwork needed to put on the Business Scheme.

July brings their future closer, as the Year 6 pupils visit new secondary schools

and put the finishing touches to the end of year performance - Oliver. A finale we

hope they enjoy and remember fondly as they start the next stage in their lives

LYNN HAYLER

We benefit in the CHEQS churches from being part of a wider team (the ‘South

Cotswolds Team Ministry’). There are currently ten clergy in the team including

three in their first, training, posts. Amongst them is Lynn Hayler:

Some of you may have met me already as I have taken numerous services within

the CHEQS group, but if not, I am one of the curates serving in the South

Cotswolds Team Ministry. Having been a curate now for three years I am

considered ‘more experienced’ and so am enjoying having the day-to-day

responsibility for Kemspford-with-Whelford parish, recently joined in a new

grouping by Castle Eaton. I’m not entirely abandoned however, and have the joy

of working there with John Partington who is temporarily covering these parishes

as Team Vicar.

A quizzical look is the normal response to my telling people that I am a ‘curate’.

Most are too polite to ask what one of those actually is! Well, it’s effectively my

apprenticeship towards becoming a full-blown vicar of a church. I’m an ordained

priest like all the other vicars in our team but just haven’t been given sole

responsibility for anywhere yet! That may soon change though as after three years

I can now start looking and even applying for jobs elsewhere in the country. The

Church of England can move pretty slowly though, so it will probably be some

time before I am moving on anywhere.

As Curate I am still learning … learning about the church, about God, about

people. Learning is a lifetime occupation! The joy, though, is to continue to dis-

cover that God is faithful, surprising, generous – and has a sense of humour! We

are never too old to learn. Perhaps exploring faith is something you consider only

to be for young people and something you discarded many years ago. I wonder if

God is actually who you think he is or have there been misunderstandings or

misinterpretations about him? There’s only one way to find out….to start asking

questions and exploring. I’m still finding out new things about God and being

delighted and amazed by his loving-kindness and faithfulness, particularly in these

dark days we seem to find ourselves. So when you next see me in the CHEQS

village, do take the opportunity to ask me about my faith or indeed your own

questions of faith. I’d be delighted to chat!

Lynn Hayler

Look in the centre pages, and most months you’ll find Lynn ministering in at least

one of our churches.

COLN VILLAGE FETE –JOIN US FOR A BBQ!

The famous Coln St Aldwyns Children’s Fete & Produce Show is starting at the earlier time of 12.30 pm on Saturday 2 September with a fantastic BBQ for all the family including some veggie options. Although we’re in a new venue this year, the Mill House gardens, the most important part is unchanged – entry for children is free, as are the games and the entertainment. And don’t forget that along with your books we want your fashionable cast-offs, too, for our new Fashion Stall for men and women. The collection point is the store room behind the tea gardens at the Coln Community Store, so please drop off your items there between now and 1 August. A programme with more details and an entry form for the Produce Show are included in this July issue.

HATHEROP CASTLE SCHOOL: ‘RAINDROPS’

Hatherop Castle has been part of my working life and teaching career for over 25 years. In all that time I have never tired of watching the children perform in front of their parents, peers and teachers in their various drama productions. It is no wonder, therefore, that when I watched the Nursery and Pre-Prep performance of Rainbow Spectacular just before half term, I was as enchanted as ever. Those first trembling steps on stage, as each child searches and scans the audience for a glimpse of a proud parent, are to be treasured. This year the Nursery children performed the role of the rain and the sensitive and patient tinkling of the piano as Chris Page (director of music) encouraged each and every raindrop onto stage to settle at their own pace was heartwarming. We naturally forgave them their stage fright when no sound was emitted from their mouths for the first two lines of the song, whilst parents eagerly mimed the words for them, but once into their stride the sense of pride and achievement was touching.

Taking part in a school production is such a valuable experience for all concerned, not just the pupils. Building up confidence and self-assurance, being part of a team and overcoming nerves in front of an audience are all obvious benefits for staff and pupils, but the precious moments of seeing your child perform for the first time are undeniably unforgettable.

Being a part of a young child’s life is a privilege and encouraging those first steps onto stage or into Nursery are amongst the most challenging and rewarding. I am always full of admiration when fear and trepidation are overcome and replaced with confidence and contentment and tears of anxiety are transformed into smiles and laughter.

September will bring another cohort of naturally anxious and apprehensive parents and children, but as I look back over this year at the journey each child has made in achieving self confidence and contentment within the Nursery, I feel very proud to have been a small part of their first steps into the world.

RIDE & STRIDE

This year’s ‘Ride & Stride’ in aid of the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust is on Saturday 9 September. This is a splendid opportunity to raise money for a very worthwhile cause – the Trust has been of great help over the years in contributing to the repair of our lovely village churches.

The idea is to arrange sponsorship for walking, cycling or riding around local churches – the itinerary is yours to decide. More details will be given in future magazines, but meanwhile why not contact your village organizer if you’d like to offer to take part, or to help in other ways: Coln – David Hicks-Beach (01285 750482); Hatherop – Brian Say (01285 750409); Eastleach –Nen Sutcliffe (01367 850239); Quenington – Anthea Palmer (01285 750493); Southrop – Sally Parris (01367 850321).

THANK YOU

To all the people in Southrop who gave to the League of Friends house-to-house

collection. The amount raised was £674.77.

QUENINGTON VILLAGE HALL SEED SWAP

Please remember to collect your seeds for the Seed Swap, to be held at Quenington

Village Hall on Apple Day, October 21st. No money will be exchanged but

packets need to be clearly marked with the name and collection date. You could

also add any other useful growing tips. Unused seed packets can also be

exchanged.

Some easy vegetables include beans, peas, tomatoes and spinach. Remember: no

hybrids, dry seeds completely on the plants for most seeds, reduce cross-

pollination by only growing one variety of each species and isolate by distance.

Only save seeds from the healthiest true-to-type plants.

For more information on saving seeds go to www.queningtonvillagehall.org.uk

WILLIAMSTRIP CRICKET CLUB

Williamstrip CC suffered a chastening defeat over the Bank Holiday weekend in

the local derby with Fairford CC 2nd XI. For the second week in a row Steve

Reeves provided the high point with an unbeaten 68. Otherwise scoring was slow

and Fairford comfortably reached the required 156 runs with 11 balls to spare.

Our rollercoaster form returned however last Saturday with victory over Central

Hall CC. An excellent innings from Mike Godwin (125) enabled Williamstrip to

set Central Hall CC a challenging total of 218. Jon Gardiner (21-4, 8 overs) dis-

missed both openers in a devastating spell of bowling, which included a spect-

acular one-handed caught and bowled. The rest of the wickets quickly followed

with a fine bowling performance from all, including a bright spell of leg spin from

George Elliott (23-3, 7.5 overs).

Nets are held every Wednesday evening at 6:30pm. These sessions provides a

good opportunity for anyone who thinks they might be interested in playing to

come up and have a practice.

COTSWOLD ARCADIANS

Our production this year is Shakespeare’s Pericles, a swashbuckling adventure

story complete with kings and queens, handsome princes and beautiful princesses,

marauding pirates, wicked stepmothers and sleazy lowlife: it offers shipwreck,

plague, kidnap, murder, hope and despair, love and loss.

Pericles will be set in the magical world of Middle Eastern storytelling where the

content hovers in that tantalising zone between reality and fantasy. The fast-

moving narrative whisks us around the Mediterranean, to Tyre, Tarsus, Antioch,

Ephesus, Myteline and Pentapolis, exotic locations rich with romantic connot-

ations. It is a tale such as old sailors traditionally tell, one that would not be out of

place alongside those of Sinbad, Aladdin and Ali Baba in the Arabian Nights.

As one of Shakespeare’s late romances, along with The Tempest, Cymbeline and

The Winter’s Tale, Pericles also spans a whole generation and allows him to show

a complete cycle of life. All four central characters find happiness after many

years of pain, providing one of Shakespeare’s most memorable and moving final

acts. Not to give the story away, Pericles has arguably the best ending of them

all!!

Pericles will be performed from 25th - 29th of this month in the beautiful grounds

of Hatherop Castle. Tickets are selling quickly: please visit www.arcadians.org

or ring 01285 898019.
