Top 10 cyber safety tips By eSmart in News-Share this: 1. Care about the Share Social media wants you to share as much as you can bear! But the share should be rare. NEVER

share: passwords, private/personal information, your location. 2. Privacy Matters If you care about the share, you’ll protect your privacy, no matter what. Regularly check your

privacy settings on social media, and always think before you post. It’s amazing where data ends up – usually all over the internet.

3. Respect the Privacy of Others Treat others’ privacy as you would your own. Ask for your friends’ permission before uploading

photos and videos of them. It’s not all about you, amiright? 4. Keep Everything Updated Any idea what causes the most security breaches on the internet? Software that isn’t up-to-date.

Seems crazy simple, but it’s true! Be vigilant about updating software, including apps, anti-virus and even the humble browser.

5. Spam, Spam, Spam, Spammidy-spam Even with the best anti-spam and malware software – that’s up-to-date – spam is the modern

version of junk mail. It’s everywhere! Learn how to tell the difference between real emails and messages, and dodgy things with dodgy links. Sometimes they don’t look so dodgy...always be suspicious of hyperlinks in emails.

6. Control the Troll Within There be trolls out there – beware! Don’t feed them, don’t give them what they want: an angry

response. Block/Report the trolls. But also: resist the inner troll. If you’re not adding something to the debate online, don’t bother. Don’t be part of the problem.

7. Cyberbullying and Harassment If you’re being targeted by this kind of behaviour, know what you can do, and where you can get

help. Visit the National Centre Against Bullying website and the Office of the eSafety Commissioner's website.

8. Keep Your Friends Close and Strangers at Arm’s Length Do you know how many true friends most people have? Three. Yup, those four thousand and fifty-

two Facebook ‘friends’ are a combination of acquaintances, people-you-met-once, people-you-can’t-remember-meeting-once, and probably, some ‘randoms’. They don’t need to know what you had for breakfast, or what concert you went to last night, do they?

9. Feel the Flow – Keep Your Life in Balance Technology is incredible. Gaming, networking, apps…online shopping! But make sure you take time

out and find the right balance for you. Too long on tech can put the world out of whack. 10. Have Fun, Friend Always remember to chill out and keep things in perspective. There’s too much information online

to take it all in! Focus on each moment, and enjoy. Mr Dean Lockhart, Assistant Principal GRADE 1/2 We had a colourful room yesterday with lots of different book characters enjoying lots of different book week activities! Our tricky words for the week are house, because and why. Can your child read and write these words? In Maths this week we are looking at fractions, so far we have learnt that a fraction has to be an equal part of a whole. Some students say they can eat half a pizza all by themselves! Grade twos have had camp information sent home regarding the Roses Gap camp at the end of the term. Please let me know if you did not receive this. Mrs Deirdre McKenzie, Teacher

GRADE 2/3 Gee, what a busy two weeks it has been! The house spirit at the athletics carnival was great and all those Grade 2/3 students who participated were eager and excited about their day. We loved having the dress up and BBQ and enjoyed spending the day with all school staff and students. Our class enjoyed participating in the Indonesian Independence dress up day along with the fundraising BBQ. What a surprise to see the donuts on the day too! Yummy yummy! The students loved the Book Week activities and dress up day this week. We loved sharing our costumes and parading in the KLC. It was great to see so many families there to watch and participate. In class, our students have been eagerly participating in the three Australia Day competitions with the theme ‘My Favourite Place’. We have completed the Colouring In Competition, the Literature Competition and the Photography Competition demonstrating and describing some of our favourite places. I am keen to see our students receiving their participation certificates and awards at the next Australia Day Ceremony at Jacka Park in 2020. In English, we have focused on noticing and hearing sounds when we read and write. We have begun refreshing our memories of the Letters and Sounds assessments and tested our knowledge and improvements that we have been making over the year. In Maths we have looked at Symmetry as well as Location/Transformation vocabulary. We have loved playing some of the fun games in class, where we set our classroom robots into action by following our instruction. For Inquiry, we have learned a lot about Weather, Water and now Seasons. We are beginning to understand the changes that we see around the world and grasp an understanding of how seasons look around the world. We loved learning where Wedderburn fits in comparison to the rest of the world. Last week, we loved participating in the Friday fun activities. It was great to be able to work with the students from the other classrooms on OSMO, Lego, shape building, music and craft. Ms Jessica Higgins, Teacher GRADE 3/4 Grade 3/4 have enjoyed Science Week where they investigated 50 years since man first landed on the moon. They watched some clips of the Lunar landing and summarised the important information in their writing books. The students were also asked to reflect upon what they found and write down some wonderings, which they read out to the class. Students looked fantastic for Book Week celebrations and enjoyed the many activities which related to the Children’s Book Council shortlisted books. “Chalk Boy” by Margaret Wild was one of the chosen books which was read and discussed by students. The students also watched a short clip on 3D pavement art and then used chalk to draw their own pictures. Mrs Cindy Heggie, Teacher GRADE 5/6 Thank you for the baby photos for our classes with Janice and the photos that are beginning to come in of your students when they were 5 or 6 (depending on current grade level). We have begun working hard to combine them for a comparative effect for our school magazine. Students have begun to film their news pieces for literacy. If students would like to bring any props that would be much appreciated. For some strange reason it seems to be much easier to speak formally when dressed in a blazer and tie. Congratulations to those students who have finished their sporting seasons last weekend. This week will be a particularly large week for our Grade with the majority of us participating in the play. We are looking forward to the culmination of many long hours and much singing practice.

Mrs Annita Steel, Teacher SCIENCE WEEK During Science Week (10-18 August 2019), the primary school students had the chance to see and participate in Science activities. On Monday, 19 August, the Grade 5/6 students had time in the secondary Science room and watched several Science demonstrations before they performed some experiments themselves. On Thursday, 15 August, the primary students spent lunchtime launching

2020 Year 7 commence their transition into Secondary School Week 4 of term 3 our Grade 6 students attended a half day fun transition day (with 2 full days to follow in Term 4) to help set them up for a successful commencement next year. It is one of those milestone occasions we often remember. I remember being so excited about getting a locker key and more so, the fancy key chain which the ‘secondary students’ had! The idea of moving rooms and lots of different teachers was something I wasn’t sure about. Transition is designed to give the students a taste of secondary life including their teachers and classes and to answer any questions they might be thinking about. They also receive a buddy from the current Year 7’s who can help guide them – after all they are now ‘experts’ in secondary school life. There is naturally a great deal of excitement for the current grade six students to try out life in secondary school. This fun half day started with Ms Lockhart running an icebreaker activity with MM’s. Students could choose the question they wanted to answer based on the colour of MM’s. Next they attended a welcome morning tea hosted by the current Year 7 students who baked for the occasion. Then it was time

to attend a double cooking class with the Year 7’s. Mrs Woodman instructed them how to make chocolates using various moulds. The students then presented them in little bags with ribbons to take home. It was a really positive and fun time for us all. They are a terrific group of energetic students and we wish them every success during this time of transition. Ms Allison Atkins, Teacher Maths Pathway Congratulations to last fortnight’s Maths Pathway champions. Just a reminder that students achieving 100% growth rate each cycle is equivalent to one year’s growth achieved in the Mathematics curriculum. Congratulations to Lachlan, Jade and Matilda for achieving the highest growth this cycle with 233% and to Year 5 for achieving the highest average growth rate this cycle.

Year 8 and 9 This term, Year 8 have been working on perimeter, area and volume of shapes. Whilst Year 9, have recently been working on the Mean, Median, Mode and Range. They will soon be moving onto Five Number Summaries and Boxplots. Miss Emma Milne, Teacher VCAL NEWS For the past few weeks, we have been compiling our resume folios in preparation for our Mock Interviews that will take place next Tuesday 27 August. We are also collating and organising our final presentation Folio of Evidence that are being displayed at the VCAL dinner on Sunday October 27 2019. We prepared morning tea on Friday 16 August to host Mr Peter Aurish, Buloke Loddon L2P Coordinator. This Learner Driver Mentor Program assists learners between 16 and 21 years of age, who do not have access to a supervising driver or vehicle, to gain the driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

On Monday 19 August, we visited the Wedderburn Police Station where Sergeant Zac Bull gave us a tour of the place along with his impressions of the joys of the job. He has agreed to be involved with us in the Colour run in October. Charisma, Holly and Keely accompanied Ms Cindy Gould, Youth Worker of IDHS to decorate the Wedderburn Newsagency in pink to advertise WOW week.

Student Projects As a VCAL student we have to undertake projects throughout the year. I have decided on two projects to work on for the rest of the year. My first project is the ‘Lids 4 Kids’ project which is where I will be collecting bottle caps and plastic lids of a variety of colours. These lids are then sorted into colours and shredded and made into prosthetic hands for children whose parents cannot afford to purchase expensive items. I have set up a collection box at the front office for anyone who would like to add to the collection. The lids can include soft drink, milk, water, juice bottle caps or lids. My starting goal is to reach 1000 lids, however, with your help I am sure that I can pass this goal easily. My second project is called ‘Share the Dignity’. I would love to get some help from the Wedderburn Community to make up bags of sanitary products, so that women and girls who are homeless can feel happy and comfortable with their own body. If you would like to donate a bag, the items that can be in the bag are:

I have set up a collection box in the front office for all of your donations and would appreciate the donations being made by Friday 15 November. I can then have all of the items transported to the nearest collection centre in either Maryborough or Bendigo. Charisma Leitch, Student VCE Legal Eagles: All RISE! system. Key always to the investigations is the students exploring the extent to which the principles of justice (access, equality and fairness) have been achieved. One specific key knowledge point studied in detail was the role of a jury in a criminal trial. This followed our visit to the Bendigo Law Courts in Term 2 where an educational session with a judge stressed the likely responsibility that one day they could be called on to deliberate on the guilt of an accused in a criminal trial. Recently the students watched “12 Angry Men” about a jury deliberating over an accused who if found guilty of murder would be sentenced to death. Mikala and Grace, for a learning task, created a short movie clip involving a jury evaluating They enlisted the help of the VCAL class to form a mock jury. The ladies prepared an engaging and lively mini-drama on a fabricated case. Ms Allison Atkins, Teacher SENIOR ADVOCACY NEWS Thank you: Thank you to all students who have submitted their 2020 Expression of Interest forms. Students will receive an official ‘blocking sheet’ in early Term 4 to finalise their selections for 2020. Open Days August is an extremely busy month for our universities, with many students in Year 10, 11 and 12 visiting their campus Open Days. Open Days provide students and their families with a great starting point when researching tertiary education, potential courses in the future, accommodation facilities, etc. LaTrobe University in Bendigo has their Open Day this weekend – all Year 12s are encouraged to attend to gather more information about their potential future courses next year! Mrs Carlie Turnbull and Mr Anthony Tatchell, Sports Coordinators NATIONAL KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP After many hours spent traveling to training both in Dunolly, Maryborough and Melbourne it all came down to one moment in time for Wedderburn College student Leah McCoy as she competed in the National Karate Competition in Launceston, Tasmania. Over one thousand competitors from across Australia took part in the event, 45% of whom were from Victoria, making it even harder to be selected onto the state team to begin with. Faced with a tough draw and a strong field of thirty competitors (all black and brown belt) Leah was last to take the mat. Up against a girl from Queensland both competitors performed their best katas for the five judges surrounding them. Leah’s goal going into the comp was to receive just one flag from a judge on the day, a big ask considering this is her first year of competing at this level. Not one but two judges threw their red flags in the air which meant that they thought Leah did the better kata on the day. This of course meant that the Queenslander was awarded three flags sending her into the next round. Leah’s state coaches reassuring her that the difference between the flags was minuscule to say the least. Repechage was in play but would only be in Leah’s favour if the Queenslander had made it through to the medal rounds but, considering her next opponent was the eventual winner (a Victorian who Leah trains with), she was unable to progress any further. Leah is now ranked 16th in Australia for her division. With her time at Nationals over, the smile could not be wiped from Leah’s face as the reality of where she was and how far she’d come – plus having exceeded her own expectations – sank in. The feelings of immense pride and joy ignited her passion to do well in the sport she loves. The Nationals are set to be held in Perth next year. Leah once again

hopes to secure her place on the state team and train hard to better her new set goals at next year’s National Championships. Let the training, long hours in the car and fundraising begin. WOW for Women I would like to thank Keely, Charisma, Holly and Elaine for the wonderful work they did at the Wedderburn Newsagency and General Store last Monday 19 August 2019 to help advertise the WOW night on Wednesday 4 September 2019. CBCA Book Week Yesterday we celebrated the power and love of reading. The whole school, Playgroup children and carers and a large contingent of community members assembled in the school gym to parade and admire everyone dressed as their favourite character from their reading. We had glamourous ladies from “The Great Gatsby”, Wednesday Addams, the Magic Pudding, The Paper Bag Princess, Julius Caesar, the 7 Dwarves, various heroes from myth and fantasy, Mary Poppins and many students from Hogwarts. Thank you to all the costume designers and makers for such a spectacular show. The judges were challenged but the following students were awarded a book voucher for www.bookdepository.com up to $15 to choose their own book prize. Just fill in the certificate and bring it to the Library or come and get assistance with using the website from our very caring book enablers.

Mulan is upon us! This Friday and Saturday will see the culmination of 9 months of planning, dreaming, rehearsing and teamwork for many of our students and staff when we have two performances of our school musical “Mulan Jr”. This is a version of the very popular Disney animation specially written for schools to perform. Spectacular costumes, songs and humour suitable for any age. Please join us. Book tickets online at www.trybooking.com Adults $11.50 and children $6. There has been a mishap with 2 prices being advertised but this is the real price including the online booking fee. We are very sorry for any confusion.
