THE D2M APPROACH

D2M have extensively refined a five step process to develop and protect new concepts. Our thorough approach is designed to prove the key elements of the idea whilst minimising the financial risk. We then generate professional standard prototypes and product sell sheets to demonstrate your product to our network of decision level buyers gaining firm commercial interest before commencing production.

A thorough idea evaluation to establish the viability of an idea. This is likely to include global patent searching and development costing.

Idea development and CAD modelling. This stage often includes proof of concept prototypes to demonstrate core functionality.DEVELOP

D2M offer a thorough viability assessment before proceeding to the prototype and patent stages of a project. The early assessment identifies any potential failure points for your new concept and therefore helps minimise risk while also giving more certainty of success. A full assessment stage may include: Global Patent Searching - We offer a range of thorough Patent Searching packages to suit your budget. If you are serious about your idea, we strongly recommend our search as the best start.

Design Specification - Creation of a full project brief and specification based on initial discussions and idea evaluation. This will contain a detailed list of the design goals for the project.

Concept Exploration - This stage is aimed at thoroughly exploring a concept with a view to identifying innovative ideas and potential further I.P. Our creative team often add substantial value to the concept in this stage.

Feasibility Studies - A report assessing the viability of a concept. This may include initial test rigs and research to determine if the idea is technically possible.

Costed Development Plan - A bespoke development plan tailored to your idea, giving an overview of the development and I.P protection costs.

Not all ideas need a full assessment but if you are unsure as to whether or not your new concept is viable, this stage can be invaluable.

DEVELOP

D2M takes a very practical approach to idea development. Our superb team of experienced design engineers are often found testing a mechanism, building initial mock-ups and ensuring that the shape and size of the product is practical and comfortable.

Sketch Development is used to rapidly explore styling and functional concepts before advancing into CAD or prototyping.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) is used to refine the product in 3D prior to presentation prototypes.

Textile Product Development involves: material selection; defining production stitching techniques; initial sketchwork and then pattern cutting and creation of initial prototypes.

Design for Compliance is necessary if EN or BSI standards apply to your product. CE compliance may also be necessary and D2M’s design team and manufacturing partners are experienced in this area.

Why choose D2M for concept development?

We have built an exceptional design team with a range of complimentary experience and strengths. Our designers have proven ability on a wide range of products from design through prototyping and, crucially, manufacturing. This ensures that production issues are considered from the outset of your project minimising expensive tooling costs and helping to establish a viable unit price.

Introduction to Protecting your Intellectual Property (I.P)Protecting your idea is critically important. At D2M we have worked hard to develop excellent links with a number of high quality patenting experts who share our core ideals of honesty and integrity.

We have links to attorneys with a wide range of specialisms across different industry sectors, including:

- Mother and baby- Medical- Textile products- Sports and outdoor products- Apps and software- Consumer electronics

D2M also has links to specialist IP solicitors who can often advise on IP strategy prior to commencing work with any specific attorney. We find that in some cases this advice can ensure that a more cost-effective approach is taken having thoroughly assessed your business aspirations.

You can be assured that we will put you in touch with an I.P professional that has specialist knowledge in the sector relating to your project and together we will guide you seamlessly through the process.

PROTECT

Patents - A patent can protect: how something works; what it does; how it does it; what materials it is made of and how it is manufactured. A patent gives the owner the right to prevent others from making, using, importing or selling the invention without their permission. Patents are generally the most expensive form of I.P protection but are often the most appropriate way of protecting a new product idea. A strong patent can be a valuable asset and is therefore best completed by a Chartered Patent Attorney.

Trademarks - Trademarks are badges of commercial origin that distinguish the goods or services of one business from those of another. You may wish to Trademark your product, your company name and your logo.

Registered Design - A registered design protects the overall appearance of your invention. It protects the form and materials but does not cover how the product works. Design registration is a relatively cheap, quick and easy process compared to patenting and you can obtain a ‘registered community design’ that protects your idea across Europe.

Copyright - Copyright is an automatic right, which applies when the work is created, however it has limited applicability to products.

Product Costing

A thoroughly thought through and well designed product is a great start but now it needs to be professionally presented so that it attracts the right commercial interest to ensure it reaches the market. D2M offer a range of services that will help ensure you gain investment and orders.

Presentation Prototypes are a great way to fully demonstrate the aesthetics and functionality of your product. D2M Innovation are highly experienced at producing superb presentation prototypes in a wide range of materials and finishes from CNC metal and plastic to vacuum casting silicone rubber and textiles. Our fully equipped workshop allows for detailed prototype development of plastic, metal, rubber and textile products.

Product Sell Sheets highlight the important product features and benefits of your product and are an invaluable tool when presenting to potential investors, licensees or retail buyers.

Branding and Graphics are as important as the product itself. A great looking presentation prototype and set of product sell sheets are well complimented by a strong brand identity.

Packaging prototypes can be created to complete a thorough presentation package sure to grab the attention of prospective buyers and investors.

Product Costing is essential to complete the picture for retail buyers. D2M has a trusted selection of UK and foreign manufacturers and can complete a costing stage on your product.

Manufacturing Sourcing

CAD for Manufacture

Sampling

Production Management

After working through the previous stages, your product will now be nearly ready to mass manufacture and this stage contains further key processes to enable you to complete the product design process and bring your product to market.

Finding the right manufacturing partner is essential to your product’s success and D2M have sourced trustworthy and reliable manufacturing partners from all over the world.

CAD for Manufacture focuses on improving the design further still from the development and prototype stages. This step will focus on areas such as improving mouldability, reducing unit costs through design tweaks and preparing the CAD model for tooling.

Sampling of the final design is carried out by D2M’s manufacturing partners upon completion of the tooling. This enables testing of the final design in a mass production environment in various different materials and colours prior to the initial batch of production units being created.

Production Management involves D2M acting as a liaison between you and the chosen manufacturing partner. An ongoing management process then ensures the process runs smoothly.

We think that what our clients say about us is more important than what we say about ourselves. Here are a few of many positive comments we have recently received: “D2M are a friendly team with a flexible approach who will go the extra mile to help you to progress your idea into a marketable product. D2M are knowledgeable, yet approachable and they listen carefully to your requirements. I was very pleased with the end result!” Adele Tinsley - Brighton “D2M brought a professional approach on how I could transform my idea into a stylish, marketable product. Phil and his team have been enthusiastic and resourceful throughout the process and I much look forward to continuing to work with them.” Mary Marshall - WEST SUSSEX “I am currently working on my first of five ideas. As an inexperienced inventor, I searched the web for a company who would be able to help me with a step by step guide on the project. I contacted D2M and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I arranged a meeting with the Managing Director (Phil Staunton) and he explained the process from idea to market and how I could take the project forward. I am currently at the prototype stage and I am very happy with the outcome. I truly recommend D2M and I will only be using D2M for my future projects. Artell Cowell - LONDON” “I find D2M to be creative, artistic, commercial, responsive and professional, as well as reasonably priced. What else could I want?” Neal Rose - HERTS “D2M have been wonderful to work with. They offered an honest, transparent, and structured method to professionally develop my ideas. They never lost focus on the reason why I hired them in the first place - which was to help me produce a design I could take to Industrial Partners. They kept me fully informed on progress and were very happy to incorporate my feedback and go through the necessary iterations to complete the work to a very high standard!” Rashid - LONDON
