11 April 2018 END OF TERM WOW! What an extremely busy term we have all managed to get through! Congratulations firstly to mums and dads who have stayed dedicated to bringing children to

school on time, in their correct uniform with food and water to keep them going at school and

their homework completed! Extra points to those parents who do drop off and pickups to more

than one school and after school activities and those who are dropping children to school after

finishing a night shift!

Secondly, what a great job our students have done to stay on task for an extra-long term.

They have started the year with a new teacher and new classmates, been able to adjust to new

routines and structures, shown how clever they are through the assessments and testing that

take place early in the year and still maintain their smiles, friendships and happy goodbyes as

they cross the crosswalk at the end of the day.

Finally, the biggest WELL DONE goes to our very devoted and enthusiastic staff – teachers, ed-

ucation assistants, admin staff, uniform shop and canteen staff and of course Mr Vince! The

staff that work together at Sacred Heart do so to benefit your children’s education and care.

They spend countless hours at school and home on tasks that contribute to your child’s success

here at Sacred Heart. Besides planning, teaching and assessing the curriculum, staff are in-

volved in weekly meetings with colleagues and parents, coaching in digital literacies, ensuring

children feel safe and happy at school, preparing and planning assemblies, masses and other

special events, sports carnivals and practice, at least four playground duties a week. This all

happens on weekdays! I can assure you, ALL of our staff spent countless evenings, weekends

and holidays thinking about what they can add, adjust and include in their repertoire of strate-

gies to ensure your children have the best possibilities here at Sacred Heart. Below is a great

example of what happens in a typical day of a teacher.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SACRED HEART TEACHER…. MR BURKE

Mr Burke usually wakes at around 5.45am on school days and arrives

to school between 7.15-7.30am. Before children enter the class-

room, Mr Burke is usually at his desk preparing for the day or in

meetings with colleagues. On Wednesday mornings, Mr Burke at-

tends staff prayer where the staff have the opportunity to gather

together to reflect and pray.

When children arrive at school, Mr Burke greets them and helps

them prepare for their day – bring in homework and notes from

home, have their diary in class to record homework and other im-

portant information, ensure pens, pencils and digital resources are

ready. He then begins lessons.

While the class are attending specialist classes, Mr Burke prepares lessons, marks work and as-sessments, finishes administration tasks such as checking off permission slips, absentee notes, etc. completes testing and assessing, researches information for upcoming lessons and events,

prepares for future events such as Eagles Cup and class masses.

As Mr Burke does five playground duties throughout the week, he is able to join his colleagues for lunch twice a week. After children leave for the day, you can find Mr Burke at school completing more paperwork and preparation for the next day. Generally he stays at school until around 5.30pm and even takes work home to complete on weekends – at least two hours’ worth each weekend – more at busy times of the year such as report writing time. Even though Mr Burke loves to spend time digging around for vinyl records, his mind constantly ticks over about how to support his students better, both academically and socially. CHANGES TO DISCOVERY DRIVE AT THE BEGINNING OF TERM TWO Concerns regarding road safety along Discovery Drive were again discussed at a recent meeting held between the Chief Engineer of the City of Gosnells and school leaders from South Thornlie PS, Thornlie SHS and Sacred Heart PS. The concerns have been discussed over a long period of time and a decision was made regarding the best solution.

It has been decided that installing a length of frangible bollards along the centre of Discovery Drive, adjacent to all existing access points to carparks to the two schools will prevent right turn access, allowing only left in / left out traffic movements. This will ensure that queuing along Discovery Drive during peak school periods will be significantly reduced and the conflict of right turn movements removed. The removal of the right turn movements will however result in some cars having to travel further distances or arrange to change their trav-el routes. It is advised that travelling to turn at the roundabouts would be the safest option.

The City has received approval from MRWA to install these bollards and associated line marking and will en-deavour to undertake these works during the upcoming school holidays.

The installation of these bollards will be trialled for a period of six months to ensure their effectiveness. Upon completion of this trial and assuming they prove successful, consideration may be given to a more permanent treatment.

Please take care and take particular note of any new signage in the area as we all adjust to the changes.

CAR PARKING ISSUES

It has come to our attention that there are a number of parents who continue to park in the NO PARKING are-

as around the carpark. The reason we ask that no one parks in these areas is because cars parked here cre-

ate a barrier to clear vision around corners and/or they limit the reversing and turning space for some cars and

drivers. In the safety interests of our school community, please refrain from parking in the NO PARKING spac-

es.

WINTER UNIFORM

Children will return to school on Tuesday 1 May and as the weather is still unpredictable at this time of year, we will have the usual two week changeover from summer to winter uniform at the beginning of Term 2. Please take note of the winter uniform below, as stated in our Parent Handbook. It may be worthwhile trying the uniform on over the holidays just in case children have grown!

Girls (Winter) Blue pleated winter skirt Blue school over blouse Blue school woollen jumper Black leather lace-up shoes Blue school socks or tights to match the colour of the pleated skirt Blue school hat

Boys (Winter) Blue school shirt, long/short sleeve Grey school trousers long/short Blue school woollen jumper Black leather lace-up shoes Grey school socks Blue school hat

MURPHY HOUSE MASS The Year 1-6 students attended the Murphy House Mass this morning. Thank you to the teachers who have helped prepare for the Mass, to Father Minh-Thuy for saying the Mass and the children who led the celebration of the Eucharist. EDUDANCE Edu-Dance is a creative hip-hop dance program designed for primary school students The program fulfils the Physical and Health outcome requirements (Dance element) for students and covers many other aspects such as coordination, musical appreciation and self-confidence, and gives many children the opportunity to experi-ence the excitement of performing in front of an audience. Most importantly it is promoted as a program for fitness and fun. Next term we are lucky enough to have EduDance return to Sacred Heart. Please help your child be prepared by dressing them in their sports uniform on their allocated day:

Monday – PPW, 1W, 2W, 3W, 4W, 5W, 6B, 6W

Tuesday – PPB, 1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B

Dates and times of the EduDance concert will be advertised early next term.

YEAR TWO ASSEMBLY This week, for our final assembly of the term, the Year 2 children will present the assembly. All parents and

friends are welcome to attend.

I wish to take this opportunity to remind children that the holidays are a time to rest, relax and spend quality

time with their friends and family. It is also a time for mums and dads to have a break from packing lunches,

ironing uniforms and helping with homework, so children, please try to do something special for your parents

to show how much you appreciate their help during the school term. Enjoy your break everyone and we look

forward to seeing you all safe and well at school on Tuesday 1 May.

Vanessa Alaniz Assistant Principal A BIG WELL DONE TO A GREAT FELLOW!

Congratulations to Vicario Gracias (5B) for completing a superb season for the Gosnells Cricket Club. Vicario was awarded U11 Junior Cricketer of the Year and also received an award for Best Bowler and Best Batsman (Best All-rounder in cricketing par-excellence).

Apart from being a gifted cricketer, this is a great reward for the tireless effort and time Vicar-io has committed to the game. We at Sacred Heart are very proud of your achievements Vicario. Keep up the good work. The future of Australian cricket needs your skills and, I dare say, your virtues of fair play and respect for opponents!!

A huge thank you to all parents who donated to the cake

stall for AUTISM DAY. As you can see, there was a lot of

BLUE cake and treats!!! Lots of children enjoyed adding

some blue accessories to their uniform to make it a more

special day, and support from parents was overwhelming.

We thank you for making this a memorable occasion.

Through your generosity we were able to make a very

impressive donation of $722.10 to the Autism Association

2018 Inter School Swimming Carnival Results

Last Thursday the Interschool Swimming Carnival was held. The students had trained extremely hard as a squad and were ready to do their best in representing the school. Mr Maher and I were both tremendously proud of the effort put in by all students.

I was most proud of the way that all students swam to the very end even if they had no chance of winning particularly in the relays. Unfortunately this was not enough and Sacred Heart finished in fourth place. Many of the other schools had squad swimmers and this was the biggest difference.

Congratulations to the swimmers below who received medals on the day.
