INTRODUCTION

Amongst all of the churches in the Holy Land one of my favourites is the Church of the Multiplication. Not only because of the miracle that it commemorates – the multiplying of the loaves and fish – but because of its serene setting on the north-west shore of the Sea of Galilee, the traditional site of Jesus feeding the five thousand.

There has been a church on the site since the fourth century and there are beautiful pavement mosaics that survive from the fifth century depicting local flora and fauna. The image on the cover is, appropriately, set in front of the communion table, where Christians are spiritually fed.

In our readings today we read of the compassion that Jesus has for those who were sick and hungry, spiritually and physically. Organisations such as Medway Foodbank are a Christian expression of that compassion which we are privileged to support. However, our aim must not simply be for better foodbanks but rather for the elimination of the unjust structures of society that make them necessary. The latter is the larger and more difficult task.

Yours in Christ The Revd Nicholas Cooper, Vicar of Frindsbury, Upnor & Chattenden

THE SERVICE

Greeting & Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Lord, open our lips: and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

O God, make speed to save us: O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen

Hymn Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand: Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven, feed me now and ever more. Feed me now and ever more.

Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fiery, cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through: Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield. Be thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell’s destruction, land me safe on Canaan’s side: Songs and praises, songs and praises I will ever give to Thee. I will ever give to Thee.

Words: William Williams (1717-91) and Tr. Peter Williams (1727-96) Tune: Cwm Rhondda, John Hughes (1872-1914)

Confession & Absolution

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you, through our own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are heartily sorry, and repent of all our sins. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect

Almighty Lord and everlasting God, we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern both our hearts and bodies in the ways of your laws and the works of your commandments; that through your most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers Our prayers conclude with the Lord’s Prayer.

Ver: 1.0 Page 7

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Peace

Christ came and proclaimed the gospel, peace to those who are far off and peace to those who are near. The peace of the Lord be always with you. and also with you. We share the Grace and worship in church continues with a celebration of Holy Communion.

Hymn

Fill your hearts with joy and gladness, Sing and praise your God and mine! Great the Lord in love and wisdom, might and majesty divine! He who framed the starry heavens knows and names them as they shine.

Page 8 Ver: 1.0

Praise the Lord, his people, praise him! Wounded souls his comfort know; those who fear him find his mercies, peace for pain and joy for woe; humble hearts are high exalted, human pride and power laid low.

Praise the Lord for times and seasons, cloud and sunshine, wind and rain; spring to melt the snows of winter till the waters flow again; grass upon the mountain pastures, golden valleys thick with grain.

Fill your hearts with joy and gladness, Peace and plenty crown your days; love his laws, declare his judgements, walk in all his words and ways; he the Lord and we his children: Praise the Lord, all people, praise!

Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Tune: Regent Square, Henry Thomas Smart (1813-79)

The Blessing

Christ, who has nourished us with himself the living bread, make you one in praise and love, and raise you up at the last day; and the blessing … Amen.
