Such as – fewer than 1% of children in the Eastern Cape manage to go on to tertiary education. This is because of the education system currently in place, as well as many other factors. For most education is out of reach because of poverty. Renita says they are a ‘resource mobilization team’, ‘private and public sector procurators’ or ‘professional beggars’, whichever you prefer to call them. Their philosophy is that money that is given by social corporate responsibility with no feelings for the student has no lasting benefits. They feel that if a ‘diamond student’ who has no funds to further his/her studies is given the means to study, but who is also encouraged and mentored regularly, that their future and career is ensured. This type of student will certainly pay it forward to others who come after him. Since 18 th July 2013 NMMU has initiated a campaign to encourage individuals to invest anything from R50 and to take an interest in the life of the student and track his studies. For R500 you buy a ‘candle’, which is put together with 2000 other ‘candles’ to fund the studies of one student. Renita was very excited as they had just heard that the Vice Chancellor of NMMU had pledged R50 000 personally to this Trust! Their fist student was from a school that had no maths or science teacher, so the students taught themselves as best they could. A very small number of the 40 or so students in that class passed matric, and this student is now one of 2 of those studying at university thanks to the NMMU Fund. Their second student, Sakhumze Dukwe, also spoke to us – most eloquently! He has a single mother, and has always dreamed of being educated to be able to get out of the poverty trap. He worked hard at school, and went to extra classes every Saturday to better himself. Even this was only possible due to Ubuntu, the ‘I am because you are’ philosophy of his village. He is now a second year Psychology student, and says the team from the Fund have been amazing, and totally life changing. He says we need more educated youngsters to change this country. The NMMU Trust says the only solution is ‘one student at a time’. Donors must look on this as an investment, not just a donation, and must take an interest in the student whom their gift is helping. Many of our members felt moved to put money where it is so sorely needed. New Member Application

Dr Bayanda Mbambisa, a regular visitor to our club over the past few months, has applied to become a member of the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth.

Bayanda was proposed by Nancy Nhliziyo, and seconded by Kas Kasongo.

Bayanda’s vocation is Doctor / Ophthalmologist

If anyone has any objection to Bayanda’s joining our club, please speak to President Karen or to the Secretary, Linsley Pudney, before the 24th June.

We all know that our old District 9320 joined with the Kwa-Zulu Natal district last year, to form District 9370. However, I don't think this fact has made any difference to us at club level. At District level it meant that the DG Andrew Jaeger has already travelled more than 60 000 kms this Rotary year to visit the 96 clubs in his District — as over against the 35 000 kms the DG’s of previous years had to travel to visit the 54 clubs in our old district. So the District leaders have spent the whole of this past year talking about the way forward, and they came to it that it would be best if the Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Jeffrey's Bay clubs went over to the Western Cape District. This would make much more sense for everyone, as it is much easier for us to travel to clubs in the Western Cape for conferences etc than it is for us to travel to Natal. It would also make the numbers of clubs in each District slightly more equal - from 96:59 to 87:68. the same would apply to membership numbers in each district. The District leaders needed the affected clubs to agree to this move so that it can be signed off by the current DG before the end of his term of office. There will be no immediate change, as everything still needs to be approved by Rotary International, but it is expected that we will then fall under the Western Cape District 93590 by the end of the Rotary year in 2016.

Fr Roy’s contribution

Roy Snyman said:

“Leadership is like a piece of string.

You can pull it anywhere, but you can’t push it anywhere.”

This will be taking place on the 25th June at the PE Women’s Club, in Summerstrand.

Invitations have gone out to all. Please put your name down on the list which

will be circulating at lunch.

Members’ Matters Linsley Pudney — it is your turn to talk to PE on Kingfisher

FM on Thursday, 4th June.

Pamela Sipamla - it’s your turn on the 11th June. The channels to tune into are either 103.8 or 107.5

Hlubi Hewitt-Coleman - thank you so much for the delicious black forest cake you brought for us all to enjoy as a

celebration of your special birthday last week!

We would like to wish our two delegates to the São Paulo Convention,

Hlubi Hewitt-Coleman and Nancy Nhliziyo, all the very best on their travels.

This will be an amazing experience, ladies! Enjoy every minute of it! For those who want to wish them

luck while waving them goodbye, be at the airport on Thursday, 4th June, by 6pm, as they fly out at 7:10pm

Father Roy is packing up and clearing out, as he is moving to a retirement cottage in Munro Kirk. He had brought three most beautiful wall plates to lunch, and it was decided that the first three members who pledged to the NMMU Fund could choose one of the plates instead of their being auctioned.

Roy also had a beautiful boxed set of commemorative glasses which had been given to him by a Nurses Union when he was Dean of Kimberly.

He donated this beautiful gift to Nancy Nhliziyo because she is a nurse, and because she is teaching new nurses to be the best that they can be.
