    The Muslim for Human Rights (MUHURI)is threatening to go court to compel the po-lice to withdraw the dusk-to-dawn curfewimposed on Lamu. The rights group hasargued that the curfew-which is now in itsthird month-is a threat to the socio econom-ic livelihood of the residents and is a delib-erately form of collective punishment to theresidents.

    Thousands of Muslims thronged variousgrounds and mosques countrywide on Sat-urday to commemorate the festival of Eidul

    Adh-ha which marks the completion of theHajj-the pilgrimage to Makkah. In Nairobi,the multitudes braved the chilly weatherand light showers to attend the prayersat the Sir Ali Muslim grounds. In a recordgathering, seven Eid congregation prayerswere held at the groundsfor the worship-pers who continuously streamed in the

    grounds for the memorable prayers whichare a prelude to the joys and happiness ofthe event.

    `Eidul-Adh-ha, or the Feast of Sacrice to-gether with `Eidul-Fitr which is observed atthe end of Ramadhan are the two most im-portant Islamic celebrations.     State urged to cultivate good relations with Muslims

    Calls for peace, unity, tolerance and a re-view of the governments attitude towardsMuslims dominated Eid ul Adhha mes-sages delivered to the Muslim faithful fromvarious areas of the country.

    The national chairman of the Council ofImams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK)

    called on the government to take boldsteps to rebuild condence and good rela-tions with the Muslim community.

    In his Eid ul Adhha message, Sheikh Ab-dalla Ateka said the move will cultivategood relations and help to build the bridg-es of mistrust which exist between thestate and the community.

    ''We appeal to the government to open anew chapter of co-operation and engage-ment with the Muslim community for pros-perity and harmony,'' Ateka said.

    Sheikh Ateka also urged Muslims to reachout to others in promoting mutual under-standing and unity among Kenyans. It ishigh time for individual Muslims, leadersand organizations to stand up to upholdand propagate the true image of Islam,he said.

    In Mombasa, the Mombasa Senator Has-san Omar spoke on what he said was thecontinued violation of the rights of Kenyancitizens renditioned to Uganda and re-minded the government of its obligation toprotect the rights of all its citizens withoutdiscrimination.

    The Senator said that is more than fouryears since their rendition and accusedthe Jubilee government of paying a lip

    service to the plight of the seven Kenyanswho continue to languish in detention with-out the due process of the law. While hewas a member of a Parliament, he tried tointervene and have our brothers returnedfrom Uganda. Now as the deputy presi-dent, he has the means to prevail upon

    Speaking at the event, the vice chairmanof the Shungwaya Welfare Associationtold the government to review its anti ter-ror polices saying that the current trendis helping to fuel animosity and radicalizeMuslim youth.

    In Busia county, Muslim parents wereasked to inculcate Islamic moral valuesinto their children to protect them againstwestern culture and immorality.

    Speaking at Busia Polytechnic grounds

    during the celebrations, Sheikh Muham-mad Abdullahi Isaack, said parents shouldplay their role and use Quranic teachingsand Islamic values in ghting immoralityin the society. He noted that the societyneeds to be sensitized against involve-ment in harmful practices and instead toembrace Islamic moral values for theirwell-beings.

    Sheikh Isaack singled out facebook,twitterand other social media as some of thecauses leading to immorality in the societyand called on Muslim, parents to monitortheir children and protect them against

    Islam, which literally means peace andsubmission, is the religion of the universe.In Allahs universe, everything is assigneda proper place: The sun, moon, stars, andall the celestial bodies follow laws that Al-mighty Allah has determined for them, andthey never go out of their ordained course.

    Everything in the world, from the tiniestelectrons to the gigantic galaxies, followsits own laws. The laws followed by thephenomena of the world are perfectly evi-dent in our world, where humanitys birth,growth, and life are regulated by biologicallaws. All bodily organs, from small tissuesto the heart and brain, are governed by thelaws prescribed for them:

    Allah Almighty says in His Noble Quran:He created the heavens and the earthin true (proportions): He makes the Nightoverlap the Day, and the Day overlap theNight: He has subjected the sun and the

    moon (to His law): Each one follows acourse for a time appointed. Is not He theExalted in Power - He Who forgives againand again? (Az-Zumar 39:5)

    In his book "Towards Understanding Is-lam", Abul A`la Mawdudi says: As wehumans can to a great extent deduce theset of laws which control the phenomenaof the universe, we call them natural lawseven though it is Allah Almighty, the Crea-tor and Ruler of the universe, who estab-lished them; and hence, it is His Law thatis followed by everything in the universe.That is the reason we call Islam the religion

    of the universe; because, Islam is nothingother than obedience to Allah, Who is theLord of the universe. From this angle, eve-rything in existence is Muslim air, water,heat, stones, trees, and animals as theyall obey the Creator by submitting to Hislaws. Even unbelievers and atheists areMuslim as far as their bodily existence isconcerned, for each part of their bodies fol-lows the course Almighty Allah establishedfor it, from birth until death and dissolution.

    Islam teaches that Almighty Allah, nature,and humanity are not remote, alien to,or opposed to each other. Almighty Allahmakes Himself known to humanity through

    nature and humanity itself: and nature andhumanity are two books (of creation) thatmake Him known. Islam is the name of thecode according to which nature functions inperfect obedience and by which humanityis required, but not forced, to live by usingits free will.

    Allah Almighty says in the Noble Quran:O mankind! We created you from a single(pair) of a male and a female, and madeyou into nations and tribes, that ye mayknow each other (not that ye may despise(each other). Verily the most honoured ofyou in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the

    most righteous of you. And Allah has fullknowledge and is well acquainted (with allthings). (Al-Hujurat 49:13)

    Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessingsbe upon him), is reported to have declaredin his farewell address at Arafah: O hu-

    Hajj and unity of mankindProf. Shahul Hameedmankind! Your Lord is one Lord, and youhave one father. All of you are from Adam,and Adam is from dust. The noblest of youis the most God-fearing. No Arab has anysuperiority over a non-Arab, no non-Arabhas any superiority over an Arab, no blackperson has any superiority over a white

    person, and no white person has any su-periority over a black person superiorityis only through piety. (At-Tirmidhi)

    That is to say, the unity of mankind justlike the unity of nature is a concept ofIslam derived from the Unity of the Creator,Who is the Source of all existence. As Allahis one, all humans are created by the One

    Allah and are basically equal.

    For the above reason, to a Muslim, socialstatus and racial superiority are meaning-less as the equality and brotherhood of hu-manity is basic to the living faith of Islam.Islam is Allahs Religion in the sense that

    it was Allah who inspired all His prophets topreach to their people, the same religion ofsubmission to the will of the Creator. Henceit is only reasonable to believe that Allahdoes not conne His religion or favors toany particular nation, race, or age. For thisreason, there cannot be any contradictionor fundamental differences between ele-ments in the religion of Allah. When un-derstood properly, it affords no chance toanyone to feel any sense of supremacy orpresumed exclusivity. Moreover, when im-parted to humans, it instills into their con-sciousness a clear concept and a sound

    basis of human brotherhood. As the Mus-lim believes in the Oneness of Allah, theoneness of mankind, and the oneness ofreligion, he believes in all the messengersand revelations of Allah without discrimina-tion.

    Of all the rites of Islam, Hajj is most par-ticularly signicant to the concept of unityin that it brings nations and tribes togetherfrom distant lands before their Creator. Hajjstrengthens the foundation of brotherhoodamong people and societies as nothingelse can in such a spectacular manner.

    This annual pilgrimage of Muslims unies

    them as one brotherhood in the worship ofAlmighty Allah, the One Creator and Sus-tainer of the whole universe. Almighty Allahsays in His Noble Quran: Surely this na-tion of yours is one nation, and I am yourLord, so worship Me(Al-Anbiyaa 21:92)

    The essential unity of humanity is the con-stant theme upon which the whole edice ofIslam stands; and Muslims never disagreeon this unifying idea. History can never callto mind a more superb call than this divinecall for unity that was given through AllahsBook and through Prophet Ibrahim at rst,and nally through Muhammad (peace andblessings be upon them both).

    On the decisive day at Arafah, the decla-ration of the unity of humanity was givento mankind by Muhammad (peace andblessings be upon him). That was a den-ing moment in the history of humanity asthat call dealt a death blow to injustice and

    discrimination on the basis of color, caste,race or language. The Prophet (peace andblessings be upon him) had announced:The Hajj is Arafah. Henceforth, millionsof Muslims of every hue and stature fromthe far corners of the world ock to Arafahon the same ninth day of Dhul Hijjah every

    year to stand in prayer. To this day, the Dayof Arafah is celebrated and honored as aday of human unity; a great day for the wor-ship of the one and only Allah (God) of theuniverse.

    On this blessed day of all days, Muslims re-spond to the call of Allah given through Hisprophets (peace and blessings be uponthem all): The rst House (of worship) ap-pointed for men was that at Bakka: Full ofblessing and of guidance for all kinds ofbeings: In it are Signs Manifest; (for exam-ple), the Station of Ibrahim; whoever entersit attains security; Pilgrimage thereto is a

    duty men owe to Allah,- those who can af-ford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allahstands not in need of any of His creatures.(Aal `Imran 3:96,97)

    And proclaim unto mankind the pilgrim-age. They will come unto thee on foot andon every lean camel; they will come fromevery deep ravine. (Al-Hajj 22:27)

    The extinction of race consciousness asbetween Muslims is one of the outstand-ing achievements of Islam and in the con-temporary world there is, as it happens, acrying need for the propagation of this Is-lamic virtue. A Western writer H.A.R. Gibb

    in "Whither Islam" notes, No other societyhas such a record of success in uniting inan equality of status, of opportunity andendeavor so many and so varied races ofmankind. The great Muslim communities of

    Africa, India and Indonesia, perhaps alsothe small community in Japan, show thatIslam still has the power to reconcile ap-parently irreconcilable elements of raceand tradition. If ever the opposition of thegreat societies of the East and West is tobe replaced by co-operation, the mediationof Islam is an indispensable condition.

    Hajj is the fth pillar in Islm and is one ofthe greatest deeds one can accomplish inhis or her lifetime. There is also anotherdeed which is considered by some as be-ing the sixth pillar in Islm and also beingamongst the greatest of deeds, that being

    jihd in the path of Allh. In fact, there aremany similarities between these two greatacts of ibdah (worship).

    Throughout their lives, Muslims engage ina continuous jihd (striving for Allh), bothwith their belief and worship. The term

    jihd does not always refer to war; rather itrefers to any difcult or strenuous process.Hajj, along with all the rituals performedtherein, is actually a form of jihd. Indeed,the journey of Hajj is not an easy one. How-ever, unlike the jihd by ghting, this kindof jihd can be performed by all Muslims.The foundations of an army are discipline,submission and sacrice. If these are notpresent, their ammunition and resourceswill be of no use. Likewise, Hajj, the jihdwithout conict, is a form of discipline andit requires great sacrice and self-restraint,and it is for this reason that the Messengerof Allh (sallAllhualayhi wasallam) saidthat Whoever performs Hajj without in-dulging in lewdness or abuse returns [fromHajj] as free from sins as they were on theday they were born.[Bukhari]

    When one considers the purpose of theHajj and the rituals that are involved in per-forming it, it becomes quite apparent thata Hajji (a person performing the Hajj, the

    pilgrim) is in the same state of mind as theMujhid (in this instance, the one who goesto ght in the path of Allh). The symbolismin the wearing of the white shroud, the verysame piece of clothing which is also wornon the death of an individual, makes it clearto the one who embarks on the journey forHajj that he is travelling almost as the livingdead that is to say he is leaving every-thing behind. He carries nothing with him,

    just two pieces of cloth whilst proclaimingand chanting the oft recited talbiyah, thecreed of unication Labbaik Allhummalabbaik Here I am O Allh at your ser-vice. This is just as a soldier who goes out

    in the path of Allh; he leaves all behindknowing that either his enemy will meet hisend or he will meet his own end. In bothinstances, they are at the service of theirCreator.

    Ab Hurairah (rahiya Allhuanhu) nar-rates: The Prophet (sallAllhualayhi wasal-lam) was asked, What deed is the best?He said, Imn [belief] in Allh and His Mes-senger. Then what?Jihd for the sake of

    Allh.Then what? Hajj Mabrr [a Hajj ac-cepted by Allh].[Bukhari] Again, we see aclear link between these two noble acts asbeing from among the greatest of deeds.

    Hajj is even considered in certain contextsas not only among the greatest of deedsbut among the greatest jihd. ishah(rahiy Allhuanha) asked the Messengerof Allh (sallAllhualayhi wasallam), Wend that jihd is the best deed, shouldntwe [women] do jihd? The Messenger of

    Hajj: Striving in the path of AllahZ.A RahmanAllh (sallAllhu alayhi wasallam) replied,Rather the best jihd [for women] is aHajj Mabrr! ishah later said, Ill nevercease performing Hajj after I heard thatfrom the Prophet of Allh.[Bukhari]

    One of the pious successors, Abu Shatha

    made a profound statement when he said,I contemplated the good deeds that aperson does. I found that alh [ve dailyprayers] as well as fasting are a jihd ofthe body. And that adaqah [charity] is a

    jihd of someones wealth. But Hajj is ajihd of both body and wealth. This state-ment beautifully demonstrates how eachof these great fundamental pillars of Islmare interwoven and interconnected to oneanother.

    Another similarity between the pilgrim andthe soldier in Allhs path is their Du(supplications). The Messenger of Allh(sallAllhualayhi wasallam) said, The sol-dier in the path of Allh and the one whoperforms Hajj and the one who performsUmrah, all are the delegation of Allh! Hecalled them and they answered. And theyasked Him, and He shall grant them [whatthey ask for]![Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibban]In another narration, it is recorded that AbuHurairah (rahiya Allhuanhu) said thatThe Messenger of Allh (sallAllhualayhiwasallam) said, The guests of Allh arethree: the warrior for the sake of Allh,the pilgrim performing Hajj and the pil-grim performing Umrah.[Nasai] Againthese adth equate the one performing

    the Hajj and the one striving in the path ofAllh as being in the same category of aselect group whose Dus are particularlyaccepted.

    It should also not be forgotten that pilgrimsendure the hardship of a long journey in

    joining together to perform the obligationof Hajj. Like the one striving in the path of

    Allh, a pilgrim is constantly on the movefrom one place to the next. Even their stayin the tents in Mina or under the open skiesin Muzdalifah are again acts which onewould clearly associate with the habitat andbedding of the one who strives in the path

    of Allh. Above all, just like an army, theconcept of unity, togetherness and disci-pline of the pilgrims following a set order inone uniform, one voice, one motion, makesHajj a spectacle of the largest annual un-armed army on the face of this earth.

    It is also not surprising that both of theseconcepts have been hijacked in their ownways in modern times. Hajj has becomemerely ritualistic for many with the areasurrounding the Scared House being oc-cupied by a world of materialism, thevery thing people are to shun in makingtheir journey. The annual gathering of theworlds Muslims used to see leaders ofMuslims gather and discuss affairs of theUmmah (global Muslim community) where-as this is no longer the case. Similarly,the concept of jihd has been hijacked byrogue groups purporting to carry out thisnoble act. Their twisted and misconstrued

    ideas are considered synonymous with ter-rorism and extremism by the far right andneo-conservatives. In both cases, then, thetrue essence of jihd to stand against injus-tice is forgotten.

    In conclusion, it can be attested that these

    two deeds are imbued with the mercy ofAllh for one frees the Nafs (inner desire)from injustice whilst the other frees theworld from injustice.

    May Allh accept the struggle of all theHujjj and grant them an accepted Hajj.

    Allah has made all living creatures out ofwater. People require water for almost eve-rything but not all water carries the same

    value and signicance. Muslims refer to thewater of Zamzam as something reveredand unique. They crave this mysterious liq-uid and love to drink it whenever they can.

    And for those who managed to go to theHajj, they return home carrying it for thou-sands of miles as a prized possession andto give as special gift to their friends andfamilies.

    So what is so special about Zamzam wa-ter? In a word: Everything! There is noth-ing ordinary about it. The miracle of howit came to being in the middle of a desert,its consistency throughout out thousands

    of years, the benecial qualities it has, thefact that it never dries up. This water is spe-cial.

    The fact is, this small and only '5 ft deepwell' is far away from any other source orbody of water. It is self replenishing. It isconstantly replenishing itself in order toproduce gallons upon gallons of water forthe consumption of thirsty pilgrims plusthe additional amount that is bottled upand also the amount that is taken as giftsand distributed worldwide to millions. Sub-hanAllah!

    Zamzam water has scientically been

    proven to contain healing qualities due toits higher content of Calcium and Magne-sium Salts and also natural uorides thatencompass a germicidal action.

    It is also an established scientic fact thatpools or water wells tend to grow vegeta-tion such as algae-- especially in warm cli-mates. Amazingly this is not the case in thewell of Zamzam. It has remained free frombiological contaminations.

    Most surely the rst house appointed formen is the one at Bakkah, blessed anda guidance for the worlds. In it are clearsigns, the standing place of Ibrahim; andwhoever enters it shall be secure; and forthe sake of Allah, pilgrimage to the House

    is incumbent upon men, (upon) every onewho can afford the journey to it, and who-ever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Self-sufcient (independent) of the worlds. (Aal`Imran 3:96-97).

    It is denitely known that it was Ibrahim al-Khalil (peace and blessings be upon him)who raised the foundations of the Ka`bah.The residents around it at that time werehis son, Isma`il, and the tribe of Jurhum(originally from Yemen). It is an almostsquare building whose sides face the car-dinal points of the compass; the winds, nomatter how strong, lose their force whenthey strike it - without doing it any harm.

    The construction of Ibrahim stood intact,until it was rebuilt by al-'Amaliqah, and laterby the tribe of Jurhum (or vice versa).

    When the management of the Ka`bah cameinto the hands of Qusayy Ibn Kilab - an an-cestor of the Prophet - in the second centu-ry before Hijrah, he demolished and rebuiltit on rm foundation, putting a roof of doompalm timber and date-palm trunk on it. Healso built 'Dar al-Nadwah' (Council House)on one side. It was the place from where heruled and where he held counsel with hiscolleagues. Then he divided various sidesof the Ka`bah. Among different clans of the

    Quraysh and each clan built their houses atthe side allotted to them; and they openedtheir doors towards the Ka`bah.

    Five years before the start of the Prophet'smission, there came a ood which de-stroyed the Ka`bah's building. The Qurayshdivided among themselves the various re-sponsibilities connected with its reconstruc-tion. They hired a Roman builder to build itand an Egyptian carpenter to help him withthe woodwork. When the time came to xthe Black Stone, a dispute erupted as towhich clan should be accorded the honorof putting the Black Stone in its place. Then

    they agreed to leave the decision to Mu-hammad (peace and blessings be uponhim) who at that time was thirty-ve yearsold, because they had full faith in his deepwisdom and sound judgment. He got hisrobe, and putting the Stone on it, told allthe clans to hold the sides of the robe andraise it together. When the Stone reachedthe required height (on the eastern corner),he took it in his hands and xed it in itsproper place.

    But the Quraysh found their funds exhaust-ed. So they reduced the size on one side- as it is today; thus a part of the originalfoundation was left out, and that is the por-tion known as 'HijrIsma`il' (the Enclosure ofIsma`il).

    The building remained in that condition un-til `Abdullah Ibn Az-Zubair established hisrule over Hijaz during the reign of Yazid IbnMu`awiyah. Husain Ibn Numair, the com-

    mander of Yazid's army, besieged himat Makkah and struck the Ka`bah withcatapult. The Ka`bah was demolished,the 'Al-Kiswah' (covering of the Ka`bah)and some roof timbers were burnt down.The siege was lifted when news came of

    Yazid's death. Ibn Az-Zubair decided todemolish the Ka`bah completely and re-build it on its original foundation. He gotgood mortar from Yemen and constructedthe new building. Hijr Isma`il was re-in-cluded in the Ka`bah; the door was xed atthe level of the ground; another door wasxed on the opposite side, so that peoplemight enter from one door and go out fromthe other. He xed the height of the Houseat twenty-seven arms. When the buildingwas ready, he covered the whole buildingwith musk and perfume inside out, and putsilken Kiswah on it. The construction wascompleted on 17th Rajab, 64 A.H.

    When `Abdul-Malik Ibn Marwan came topower in Damascus, he sent his com-

    mander, Hajjaj Ibn Yusuf, who defeated IbnAz-Zubair and kil led him. Entering the Sa-cred Mosque, he saw what Ibn Az-Zubairhad done regarding the Ka`bah. He wroteto `Abdul-Malik about it who ordered him toreturn it to its previous shape. Hajjaj, there-

    fore, demolished six and a half arms fromthe northern side and rebuilt it accordingto the plan of the Quraysh; he raised theeastern door and closed the western one;he also lled the inside with the stones thatcould not be re-used (thus raising the in-side oor to the new level of the door).

    When the Ottoman Sultan Sulaiman as-cended the throne in 960 A.H., he changedthe roof of the Ka`bah. Sultan Ahmad (whocame to power in 1021 A.H.) made someother repairs and alterations. Then camethe great ood of 1039 A.H. which demol-ished parts of its northern, eastern andwestern walls. Therefore, the Ottoman Sul-

    tan Murad IV got it repaired. And the samebuilding continues till this day.

    refreshes them. Water tastes different atdifferent places. Zamzam waters appealhas always been universal. This water hasnever been chemically treated or chlorin-ated as is the case with water pumped intothe cities. Biological growth and vegeta-tion usually take place in most wells. Thismakes the water unpalatable owing to thegrowth of algae causing taste and odor

    problems.

    History of Zamzam Water

    Zamzam is the well from which Allahquenched the thirst of Ismail the son ofIbrahim (peace and blessings of Allah beupon them both) when he was an infant.His mother Hajra(peace and blessings of

    Allah be upon her) looked for water for him,but could not nd any. She climbed to thetop of Mount as-Safaa, praying to Allah tohelp her and give her water for Ismael, thenshe climbed to the top of Mount al-Marwahand did the same. Allah sent Jibreel(peaceand blessings of Allah be upon him), and

    he struck the earth, and water appeared.

    The appearance of the Zamzam began thesettlement of the Makkan valley, where thedescendants of Prophet Ismail populatedthe area. But as time passed, Prophet Ibra-him and Ismail's monotheistic message,which once dominated the region, begantaking a backseat to pagan, polytheisticbeliefs.

    Nonetheless, the well of Zamzam retainedits importance in later generations. Thegrandfather of the Prophet, Abdul Muttalib,was honored with the responsibility of tak-ing care of the well and the pilgrims to Mak-

    kah.

    Virtues and characteristics of Zamzam

    It is sunnah to drink ones ll of Zamzamwater and to quench ones thirst. The fuqa-ha have mentioned the etiquette that ismustahabb (recommended) when drinking

    Zamzam water, such as facing the Kabah,saying Bismillah, pausing to take a breaththree times, drinking ones ll, praising

    Allaah after one nishes As regards thehadeeth of Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah bepleased with him), who said, I gave theProphet (peace and blessings of Allaah beupon him) Zamzam water to drink whilst hewas standing, (al-Bukhaari), it is taken to

    mean that it is permissible to drink zamzamwhilst standing; showing the utmost re-spect.

    Some fuqaha recommended that peopleshould take some Zamzam water backwith them to their countries, because it isa cure for those who seek healing. Aishah(radhiallahuanha) reported that she tookZamzam water home with her in bottles,and said, The Messenger of Allaah (peaceand blessings of Allaah be upon him) tooksome of it away with him, and he used topour it on the sick and give it to them todrink. (al-Tirmidhi).

    The Messenger of Allah, salallahu alayhiwasallam has said: The most sublime ofall earthly waters is that of zamzam; there-in one nds food for the hungry and medi-cine for the ill." [ At- Tabarani ]

    Since Zamzam water serves whateverpurpose and intention for which it is drank;provided it is with sincerity: The scholarsand the righteous have tried this and theydrank from it with the intention of fulllingtheir needs and seeking cure for the sickor relief from poverty or catastrophe andsurely Allah eased for them achieving theirneeds.

    So next time when one gets the opportunityto drink Zamzam, one should grab the op-portunity to pray for: a healthy body, sharpmind, forgiveness for sins, life in Jannahafter death, an honorable death and allone's physical and spiritual needs of thisworld and Hereafter.

    Addressing Muslim faithful at the Mwin-gi Musila gardens during Eid ul Adh-haprayers on Saturday, the head of Dawahat Umma University Sheikh Mubarak Alistressed on the need to remain united insolidarity in order to address the manychallenges faced by the community.

    Sheikh Mubarak called upon the Muslimleaders in the country to formulate a cred-ible moon sighting committee to addressthe differences experienced during the

    celebrations of both Eid ul Fitr and Eid ulAdh-ha. It is high time that Muslim leader-ship in the country set up a moon sightingcommittee to avoid this long standing dif-ference and misunderstanding for the sakeof unity in the Muslim community. We neednot to engage in petty wrangles that canbe resolved through consultations and dia-logues Sheikh Mubarak noted.

    The Dawah head further called on resi-dents to ensure that they hold on to the tra-ditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace beupon him) as means of protecting Islamicvalues and its integrity. He urged the youth

    in the area to pursue different courses ininstitutions of higher learning both in thecontemporary and religious studies as away of eradicating illiteracy and ignoranceadding that such measures will address thecurrent shortage of IRE teachers in bothprimary and secondary schools.

    In a press statement sent to newsrooms onMonday, Wajir Senator Abdirahman Has-san, MPs Abdullahi Diriye of Wajir South,

    Abdikadir Ore of Wajir West and Adan Noorof Mandera North noted that out of the2,000 proposed kilometers, only 67 kilom-eters have been earmarked for the threecounties of Garissa, Wajir and Mandera.

    The leaders termed the decision by theTransport Ministry as insensitive and anindication of continued state marginaliza-tion of the people of Northern region whileother parts of the country continue to enjoytheir fair share of road improvements anddevelopment.

    What we witness in this distribution is aclear testimony of the continued margin-

    alization of people who have kept on sup-porting the government of the day said theleaders.

    The leaders accused the ministry ofskewed allocations and demanded properallocations done for disadvantaged areasstressing that the region must be integrat-ed with the rest of the country.

    For meaningful development to beachieved, they called the existing disparityin the infrastructural development acrossthe country to be done away with.

    The leaders complained that their attemptsto engage the government regarding the

    tarmacking of the major road that linksGarissa, Wajir and Mandera have boreno fruits and appealed to President UhuruKenyatta to address the inequality and pro-vide adequate funding for the tarmackingof trunk road that connects Nairobi to NorthEastern Kenya.

    A dairy goat project to uplift the living stand-ards and economically empower residentsof Bungoma has been unveiled by theZakat Foundation of America (ZFA) in part-nership with the Bungoma based IslamicYouth Community Organization(IYCO).The Sh1.4 million project to run for oneyear on a pilot programme has alreadybenetted over 200 Muslim families witheach family provided with two goats.Speaking at the presentation ceremony in

    Bungoma, the Zakat Foundation of Ameri-ca East Africa representative, MuhammadWangusi said the initiative was driven bythe need to address the socio-economicchallenges faced by the local Muslims,stressing that the venture will help com-bat food insecurity in the region as wellas alleviate poverty among the residentsthrough the sale and consumption of milk.''This project will help provide opportuni-ties for local Muslims to engage in dairyfarming ventures which will uplift their livesand have a positive bearing on the soci-ety,'' said Wangusi.He exuded condence that the project

    will go a long way in helping local Mus-lims increase milk production and improvelivestock husbandry in the community. Hefurther disclosed that the Foundation willengage livestock ofcers in educating thelocal communities on matters pertaining toagriculture and livestock keeping to helpthem realize their full potential and im-prove their lives.The ZFA representative said that the pro-

    Goat project to tranformlives of Bungoma Muslims

    The Darul Irshad Centre will on Sunday-launch a major sh farming project whichwill play a dual role as an income generat-ing as well as providing practical trainingto students in sh farming.The Sh2.5 million project comprises 15ponds with each pond expected to yield

    600 cat sh within a period of twelvemonth.We intend to strengthen our part-nership with local ministry ofcials in bet-tering the project and sharing our expe-rience to the locals and other would bepartners in development, said FurqanChacha, the executive ofcer of the cen-tre.The centre opened its doors to studentsafter a four-month closure. The centrewhich provides basic learning to new Mus-lims has also initiated a poultry project,animal and crop husbandry projects asincome generating projects as well as pro-moting sustained living to students.

    Darul Irshad to launchsh project

    An Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) ofcerhas being implicated on the Mpeketoni at-tacks in Lamu County in June 2014 thatleft over 70 people dead.The Independent Policing Oversight Au-thority (IPOA) said the ATPU ofcer helpedto smuggle the weapons from Somalia

    that were used by the gunmen to carry outthe carnage.In its report released on Monday IPOA re-vealed that the ofcer based at Witu coor-dinated the activities of the arms smugglerwho were said to be Al Shabaab opera-tives and the arms were brought in fromLiboi under the protection and escort ofthe said ofcer.The report further accused the NationalPolice Service (NPS) of negligence andslow response in the aftermath of the raidsadding that the police failed to act on theintelligence report that was availed prior tothe attacks.

    IPOA further noted that the commandstructure in the force was broken andblamed the police for slow response anddisjointed operations that resulted to theheavily armed gunmen to taking the townhostage.The oversight body said there was urgentneed to harmonize the command struc-tures of the National Police Service in or-

    der to integrate the three Services addingthat at the operational and tactical level,there should be one ofcer in command ofall the Service personnel in the region.It is therefore IPOAs binding recommen-dation that the Inspector General of theNational Police Service should immedi-

    ately institute measures to put in place aseamless structure of theService at all levels. The Inspector Generalof the National Police Service should fur-nish IPOA with a report on the measuresinstated within 90 days,said IPOAIn its recommendations IPOA gave the In-spector General of Police David Kimaiyo30 days to address the ailing commandstructure in the police force and instructedhim to appoint a single NPS County Com-mander in all the 47 Counties to coordinateeffective policing by overseeing all PoliceOfcers and Units.

This year was no different; goat meat was distribut-ed to more than 200 families in informal settlements around Nai-robi and its environs. The beneciaries of this program rangedfrom Orphans in children homes, Muslim homes that cater for thewelfare of the old and indigents living in slum areas. More thanseventy goats were slaughtered and the meat was divided intosizeable portions to be distributed to members of the intendedfamilies.

    Some of the villages that benetted from the meat distributionare Kibarage slums, Korogocho, Dandora, Kibera, Mama FauziaChildrens home, Masjid Aqswa- Embakasi, Mukuru slums, Ma-

    jengo Home for the Old, Kariobangi, Riruta, Kawagware, Gachie,Mathare,and Kigothoro, slums. This program also extended toother parts of the country like Bangal in Tana River and Villagesin Garissa County.
