Kingdown Week Number 34, 2016-17 Friday 30th June 2017 Kingdown Gardening Club Kingdown Gardening Club is making a difference - in the Spring an unused area outside the Creave Arts block was cleared of weeds and lier and wildflower seeds were sown. Now the garden is very colourful and is aracng bees, buerflies and other insects. Students at this week’s Gardening Club - Sophie Roberts, Penny Russel, Natalie Boyd, Libby Cumming and Marley Evans had to clear the area of lier. It is a shame to spoil the garden by throwing rubbish in there. Please use the bins. We are very grateful to the Lakeside Garden Centre at Crockerton for giving us a very discounted price on a new pond liner which was installed with help from the Site Facilies Team. Within a week of the pond starng to fill with rain water many newts had reappeared. It has been planted up with Lilies, Irises, Umbrella Palm, Elodea and a Gunerra in a boggy area next to the pond. Now it has been re- established you can see Damsel flies, Water Boatmen and Pond Skaters. It is all looking lovely and currently all of the YR8 Science classes are using it for their Biology lessons. LAMDA Examinaon Day It was a drizzly Saturday morning. A welcome relief aſter the warm spell as the students made their way to Hayesfield Secondary School in Bath. As I arrived shortly before 9am, Ellie Hopkins and Molly Savva were already underway with rehearsals. The waing area seemed quiet for a while (……) then Libby, Helena, Grace and Amber arrived early armed with snacks! The warm-ups (talking!) began. Ellie and Molly emerged happily from their exam and soon it was Jack Oley and Antonia Wilkins turn to perform. A short while later Jack and Antonia, both taking the exam for the first me this year, returned happy with how it went. Elsa Askew was next, Kingdown Musical Theatre candidate no.1. She came out happy – it went well! Helena Blain next, all seemed ok and she was prey happy unl she was vandalised with chocolate by Amber’s digesve biscuit! Maddie returned happily; this was her second year Grade 2 monologue exam. Grace Egginton (the 2nd Musical Theatre student) nearly ready for her exam, nerves free, unl her name was called! The girls in the group highly rated the toilet facilies. The paper towel experience was parcularly impressive. It was a cut above the school hand dryers. These things maer! Closely followed by an in-depth conversaon about the importance of the Arts in Schools, the wider community and Britain in general. Grace returned triumphant at which point Libby Salter’s nerves began to appear. Charloe Gascoigne completed her first LAMDA exam and was happy, but felt that really she should have “breathed a lile more!” Joely Hudson emerged happily. This year Joely took her Grade 4 exam the highest of any Kingdown students to date. I had the pleasure of being in aendance of Libby Salter and Amber Withey’s Musical Theatre exams as they needed someone to play the backing track. Both girls were fantasc! The morning went well for all students and the results will be announced in 6 weeks (mid-way through the summer holiday). Sadly, I will not be able to be part of the next phase of LAMDA at Kingdown as I am moving on to a new school. Keep it up you are all very talented – a credit to your families and Kingdown. Farewell for now, see you in the future! LAMDA runs from October to June. For further informaon please see Performing Arts Staff. Mrs Miles

Kingdown Gardening Club

Kingdown Gardening Club is making a difference - in the Spring an unused area outside the Creative Arts block was cleared of weeds and litter and wildflower seeds were sown. Now the garden is very colourful and is attracting bees, butterflies and other insects. It is a shame to spoil the garden by throwing rubbish in there. Please use the bins.

Information about Key Stage 3 Rewards Trip

400 students from Years 7, 8 and 9 will be invited on a rewards trip during the last week of the school year. This is an increased number from the trips we have run in previous years.

The list of chosen students has been calculated following the most recent data collection, by sorting students according to how many subjects have identified them as having an ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good Attitude to Learning’. In an effort to remain fair, it is not based on nominations or hand-picking students.

While it is appreciated that some students with a positive Data Collection may not be invited on the trip (as they may simply fall outside of the ‘top 400’ names), we regretfully cannot take a larger group. All students with positive reports will as always, be recognised at our summer awards assemblies.

Awards Assemblies

Monday 17th July - Millennium Awards Assembly at 1.50pm.Tuesday 18th July - Wimbledon Awards Assembly at 1.50pm.Wednesday 19th July - Lord’s Awards Assembly at 1.50pm.Thursday 20th July - Wembley Awards Assembly at 11.20am.Thursday 20th July - Twickenham Awards Assembly at 1.50pm.

A text message informing parents will be sent to parents of award winners.

Please remember that we can only accommodate two guests per student to be seated by 1.40pm, or in the case of Wembley Assembly by 11.10am.

Gymnastic Success

Summer Perkins competed in Devon at the Gymstars Open Individual competition, Level 4 age 13 and managed to gain a silver overall place overall.

It has been a great month for gymnastics as Summer and her team also won a gold medal in the first match of the West Country League in The Forest of Dean.

Congratulations Summer.

Year 8 Rounders Tournament

On the 27th, June Kingdown entered two year 8 rounders teams to the West Wilts tournament. The A team, despite having won all previous fixtures, were somewhat nervous due to their tendency to lose all common sense and hand rounders to their opposition with their crazy decision making. However, we knew that if we played to our full ability, the tournament was ours for the taking. The newly formed B team contained a mixture of those who had been dedicated to their rounders training this year and those who had discovered hidden talents in their PE lessons and had been persuaded to come along and represent Kingdown.

A confident start from the A team saw many rounders being scored against Matravers, whilst the B team narrowly won against St Laurence A team – allowing them to score just 1 and a half rounders.

Both teams settled in to the tournament and were an absolute pleasure to watch... most of the time that is! We had the occasional poor decision and to the credit of the other teams, at times were out played. However, both teams listened and remained calm and composed throughout resulting in the A team winning all of their games and being overall tournament winners and the B team coming a very close second, only losing one of their fixtures (to the A team!)

It is too hard to pick players of the tournament, so many superstars to choose from. Megan Munro was our top scorer for the evening and received several compliments from the staff from the other school. Both teams displayed great resilience and determination. I was exceptionally proud of both the existing rounders team players and the new comers who joined us last night. A big thank you to Miss Cridland for organising the tournament, to Phoenix Whichard, Izzy Stapleton and Lily Rowley for assisting in leading and to Mr Richardson for coaching and umpiring for the B team.Mrs Dunford #happycoach
