Rosebery School Whitehorse Drive Epsom KT18 7NQ T.01372 720439 www.roseberyschool.co.uk @ RoseberySchool1 1 Friday 27 April 2018 Dear Parents and Carers We have been considering the issue of sustainability this week, Mr Lach’s assemblies have highlighted both the global and more local issues surrounding our use of plastic and our general approach to safeguarding our environment by taking positive steps to reduce our waste. As a school we have much to do to manage our recycling and other waste management, and we are in the process of engaging with our canteen provider and the local council to develop a sustainability plan. I know many of our students are very exercised about this and the JLT are also playing a key role in developing ideas and strategy. One key focus for us is to reduce the number of plastic bottles that are thrown away (sadly sometimes around the school site) each day. We would love each student to come to school with a reusable bottle instead and would urge you to consider providing your child with one, if that is possible. We had a marvellous careers event on Wednesday evening. Over 30 exhibitors including Coca Cola, KBR, Unilever, the National Physical Laboratory, Atkins and NCS joined us and provided engaging and enthusiastic advice to the many staff and students who attended. Many thanks to all our contributors and to Frances Keaveney, our Careers Coordinator, who planned and led the event. This event had a timely link with the launch of our Student Futures programme in the Sixth Form, something which will run throughout this term. Ms Rad is leading this initiative which is designed to help our Year 12s increase their confidence and self-esteem and to build their knowledge and understanding of the world of higher education and employment, providing the firmest foundation for them to make strong applications at the start of the next academic year. We have also begun our Year 8 Options Interviews this week and it has been a pleasure to discuss their hopes and aspirations as they make these important subject choices for next year.

We were delighted to welcome colleagues from the GLF Trust this week who carried out a review of our work by visiting a significant number of lessons, talking to students and meeting with middle and senior leaders. A year after our Ofsted visit, we are keen to ensure we are maintaining as high a standard of provision as possible by sustaining our excellent practice and continuing to work very hard on our areas for improvement; external verification of our work is always helpful and it was pleasing that the team were very impressed with what they saw from both students and teachers. Finally this week, huge thanks to our PSA whose sterling fundraising efforts have facilitated the purchase of significant numbers of new chairs for the Sixth Form, which will be greatly appreciated when they arrive. Many congratulations to Mrs Butler who successfully completed the London Marathon on Sunday, raising a great deal for the British Legion - a feat made even more impressive by the very hot weather conditions. Have a lovely weekend.

Musician of the Month – Alice Mills, 13E

Alice plays the clarinet, violin, piano and sings, to name a few! Her first instrument was violin, which she started when she was 6 years old. She taught herself the basics of piano and then started having lessons at 7 years old, she started playing the clarinet around 9 years old. Jacob Collier is one of her favourite composers because he is insanely clever and his use of harmony is interesting to listen to. Collier has influences from a whole range of genres, especially jazz which Alice is also a fan of because, unlike classical music, it lets the performer put their own individual musicality into each piece, so the emphasis is more on the performer and less so on the composer. Collier also composes lots of ambient, chill music which Alice really likes because, even though it is so simple, it is so effective in what it’s trying to do. Alice is also interested in film music, as it transports you into the world using a whole range of composing and sound editing techniques.

Since Alice really likes film music, she went to the John Williams prom last year, which she really enjoyed since the pieces they were playing tied into the films they were from, bringing a whole different set of emotions as well as being an interesting set of pieces to listen to in an analytical sense. Alice is very involved with extra-curricular music at Rosebery. She plays her violin in Orchestra, conducts for Junior Band, String Orchestra as well as arranging music for them, plays her clarinet in Big Band, Octet and Broadway Band and sings in Rosebery Singers. And that’s just school clubs! She also plays the violin in the Surrey Youth Orchestra which she joined in September 2017. Recently, she played a piano solo (Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin) in the school Spring Concert as well as conducting two groups, and playing/singing in 6, one of which she also conducted in! She arranged the music for Junior Band and String Orchestra as she loves composing. Alice is studying A Level Music and was a music prefect in the last year. She has got a place at Surrey University to study Creative Music Technology and is planning on going there this Autumn. When she leaves university, she hopes to, either, compose, edit or sound design music for media, such as film and TV. Isabella Harris 12D, Music Prefect

PSA Second Hand Clothing & Toy Recycling:

Tuesday 1 May 2018

An easy way for the PSA to raise funds for the school is through our Second Hand Clothing and Toy initiative.

For every 1kg of items donated, we are given 40p. As a guideline, a typical outfit for a girl (shoes, trousers/skirt,jumper, T-shirt, packed into a rucksack/hand bag) would raise about

£1. If all 1440 students were able to bring in an outfit which doesn't fit them anymore, we could raise an amazing amount of money for the PSA! There are always clothing recycling bins positioned by the back gates to the school, or students can hand in donations at any time to Reception labelled ‘ATTN: PSA’. Every first TUESDAY of the month, the recycling bins will be positioned by the front and back gates to receive donations.

Our next official collection date is TUESDAY 1 MAY. Please do encourage your household to provide at least one bag of recyclable items. There is a poster included in this newsletter outlining exactly which items are acceptable - clothes, shoes, jewellery, toys (no books), bags, towels, etc.

Thank you so much in advance for your support. All funds raised go towards providing additional resources for our students.
