On Wednesday 18 May another successful Health & Wellbeing Expo was held. Fourteen local youth

agencies attended and provided information and fun activities for both staff and students. Students had

opportunities in an informal setting to find out more about what the health related organisations can offer. A

healthy BBQ of homemade hamburgers was well received as were the apple slinky’s from Community Health

and fresh fruit drinks from Healthy Living. A big thankyou to Clontarf staff and students for cooking the BBQ and

to the music students and staff for the high quality entertainment. The singing and participation was

outstanding.

It has been a busy month in Clontarf with a variety of activities taking place for our Academy members: Year 9 Transition day, Afternoon activities, Morning Training, Guest Presentations, Clontarf Billy Kart Derby and much more.

For the Year 9 Transition day we had groups of Centralian Middle School students filter through the room and take part in some leadership games. During the session we also took the time to chat to the students about their journey moving forward and the support mechanism that are in place to help each and every year 9 make it through to graduation. We look forward to working with these young men in the future and it was great to see their excitement about moving over to Centralian Senior College next year.

During our afternoon activities this week we had a group of Academy members working on the Mini Mamba in readiness for the Clontarf Billy Kart Derby.

Significant modifications were made to the Mini Mamba in an effort to make it lighter and therefore faster. It was great to see the fellas working as a team to come up with a new design and then working together to get the vehicle constructed and ready for the race.

On Thursday, Officer in Charge Pauline Vicary from Alice Springs Police came to present to some of the Year 11 Academy members about Drugs and Alcohol. Lots of good messages came from the session with the most pertinent, was the importance of completing your education and being in control of your own journey.

The second Clontarf Billy Kart Derby was hotly contested at. The event consists of two components, vehicle presentation and racing. In the presentation our Academy members did a fantastic job demonstrating what they had learnt whilst working on the Billy Kart and showed great pride in the Mini Mamba. When it came to the rac-ing, Barrie Norman did a great job behind the wheel keeping the vehicle on track and all the pushers never stopped trying. Overall the Mini Mamba team finished in second place behind Yirara College- Knight Riders. It was a great event and our Academy members represented themselves, their families, Centralian Senior College and Clontarf with distinction. Francis Bruce was awarded the Clontarf Spirit Award for his consistent effort and great attitude through the Billy Kart Project.

An after school session in the Clontarf room was actioned packed. After much deliberation it was decided that the Black Mamba was simply too heavy and measures needed to be put in place to lighten the load. Francis Bruce led the way on the tools, unbolting all the unnecessary parts and making the decision to move the rear axle in order to shorten the wheelbase. Cameron Hayes then went to work with the angle grinder, removing the weighty rear end. All in all, the fellas worked really well together to reduce the overall weight of the Black Mamba by over 20kg which is bound to make a huge difference in the Clontarf Billy Kart Derby on Thursday 8 June at Yirara College.

Recently we took a group of Year 10 students to Qantas for a worksite visit. The purpose of the trip was to highlight the various employment opportunities in the Airline industry. Throughout the visit we were walked through all areas of the Airport and the students had the opportunity to ask questions and see first hand what a future working with Qantas might look like. It was pleasing to hear some of the students questions regarding traineeships and what the minimum requirements are to work for Qantas.

Hopefully in the future we might see some of these faces working for Qantas on the sales desk !

Wednesday started bright and early with a challenging session at Alice Springs Crossfit. A dozen Academy members braved the freezing conditions and all got put through their paces by local coach Ashlee. It was the first time for a few of the fellas and Cameron Hayes came to train in his VET uniform with cowboy boots and jeans, but still gave a good effort with the exercises.

After the session we headed to the Academy room where a healthy BBQ breakfast awaited us.

The Fellas that brave the cold conditions this morning were:

Ricky Bloomfield, Damien Wilton, Eddie Campbell, Darnell Campbell, Trinity Andrews, Bradley Casey, Malachi Allen, Ronan Bloomfield Barrie Norman, Nigel Pei Pei, and Cameron Hayes. Well done one and all.

On Tuesday 30 May, (Week 7) our Responsible Independent Interdependent Learning Class invited some Year

9 Centralian Middle School students over to our college.

We introduced them to Learning Central, the teachers and students here.

Tatiana Jermacans made a presentation about daily college life and then we did sports activities playing

football, basketball and netball, with the support of Darren Talbot, Cameron Hayes and Barrie Norman from

Clontarf.

After the sporting activities we had afternoon tea and enjoyed the sausage rolls the students had cooked . It

was a successful introduction of the Year 9 students from Centralian Middle School to the Senior College by

our Year 11 class.

On Saturday 3 June a group of ten Year 11 & 12 students left Alice Springs for an Outdoor Education Activity on

the Katherine River.

The group left Alice Springs at 7:00 am and arrived at our overnight camp at the Daly Waters Pub around 5:30

pm where we had a good meal and a break before heading up to Katherine the next day.

On Sunday morning we were up again in the dark, packed up our camping equipment and were on the bus and

away by 7:10 am, just after sunrise.

We arrived and met our guide, Mick Jerram and his crew at around 10:30 am. We then had to sort all our

equipment into drums / waterproof containers before loading them on to transport for the trip down to the river.

Once on the river, teams got all their gear into the boats and we had a quick orientation about the boats, safety,

crocodiles and navigating fast water. We headed downstream for the lunch site with some crews finding that

canoeing on fast water is not as easy as it looks.

After lunch we again loaded all the gear onto boats and headed down to the overnight camp. Most of the paddling

was on flat water, with only a couple of sections of faster water, which resulted in a couple of capsizes and some

wet paddlers and equipment. We arrived at the overnight site in time for most of the equipment to be dried out.

On Monday morning we had a late start, which was okay, as we only had to complete a short paddle to the

overnight camp for the evening. There were a couple of challenging sections of the river and again there were

some capsized boats, which needed to be recovered and emptied before we could continue to the camp site.

On arriving at the overnight site, camps were set-up, equipment was removed from the boats and we completed

some deep-water rescue drills in a safe environment.

Tuesday morning we were up early to prepare all boats and equipment for our return to Katherine, a McBreakfast

then hit the road to Tennant Creek, where we overnighted before returning to Alice Springs on Wednesday

around lunch time.

Overall, the trip was very enjoyable with the group working well together, developing a range of leadership,

teamwork and collaborative skills as well as canoeing and camping skills. Well done to all involved and thanks to

Deb Batty for coming along to support our great excursion.

VET in the NTCET

As part of their NTCET, students can complete vocational education and training (VET). Charles Darwin University is providing the opportunity to enrol in:

Certificate I in Retail Services (Stage 1 credit)

Certificate II in Retail Services (Stage 1 credit)

Certificate III in Business (Stage 2 credit)

VET studies completed at Certificate level III or higher can count towards the ATAR as well as tertiary entrance for university and TAFE.

Careers in retail include sales and cashiers directly dealing with customers and merchandise as well as professionals working behind the scenes. This includes buyers of products and goods from producers, stockers, loss prevention workers, managers and marketing and advertising professionals. There are various types of retail stores such as department stores, mass merchandisers, discount store clubs, grocery stores, specialised merchandise shops and online vendors.

Business skills are required and transfer easily to most industries. For example, you could specialise in management, marketing, human resources, accounting, or business finance. You could also choose to specialise in a specific industry such as the fashion industry or in the humanitarian non-profit sector. Business studies makes it easier to start your own business.

Why students need qualifications

Of the 13 million jobs in Australia in 2020, 11 million (85%) will require a Certificate III or higher. Many of the careers and jobs that are around today will disappear by the time students get their first job and many new careers will be created. There’s no doubt that every future job will include technology. In 2006, Facebook was in its infancy, Twitter was being launched and nobody had iPhones. Ten years on, the world is a very different place, and so is the workplace.

To fill the gap of disappearing jobs, business innovation will create new and diverse roles in areas that technology can’t compete. Roles that require creative input, problem solving skills, people-focus, leadership skills or high-level communication can be future proofed as they are not effectively replaceable by technology. Recently some of our Girls Academy Year 10’s proudly attended the Sorry Day even held by Congress Link Up Service. The girls heard stories from William Tilmouth, Pat Dodds, Margaret Furber and Frank Byrne. His story was read by his granddaughter and Centralian Senior College Year 12 student Delphene Byrne. The girls participated in a smoking ceremony and placed a hand with their name / family name in the sea of hands.

Well done to our Year 11 Girls Academy Integrated Learning class for their presentation at a recent staff meeting about cross-cultural awareness and practices at school.

Nataliea, Ce'Lanne, Taigan, Marlia, Kassy and Sheree thank the staff for their positive response. The girls were pleased to see the staff so enthusiastic and playing Kahoot.

The girls were up early in the morning at 5am!

With this week being Reconciliation Week and in celebration the of the theme 'Let's Take the Next Steps', we headed out to Ilparpa to walk the Claypan Hills.

As well as steep climbs and uneven trails, the girls also carried 10 kg of weights with them, sharing the load and helping each other get over the hill. The girls made it to the peak in time to watch the sun rise over the distant hills. Well done to Keena, Shenika, Kendelle, Sharlee, Shoneeka, Crystal-Rose, Lia and Robyn.

Hooray for our first round of General Health Checks!

Between the 4 girls, they caught up on total of 14 immunisations, got their bloods tested and basics such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels, BMI etc. checked.

We were proud to see Kayemeshia Kells ( 2016 graduate) at reception. On completion of their health checks, the girls received a Deadly Choices shirt. Well done girls!

Girls Academy will continue to take 4 new girls each week to Alukura (Congress) clinic to have their health checks, ensuring our girls are healthy and able to learn at school, and create positive attitudes towards health.

On Tuesday 6 June the Year 9 students and Centralian

Middle School staff visited Centralian Senior College for the

first of three transition visits. This visit had a specific focus on

‘Building Connections’ between the Centralian Middle School

community and the Centralian Senior College community.

During the time they had the opportunity to participate in four

activities. These activities were intended to show the Year 9

students a snapshot of what college life would be like in Year

10 and to introduce them to key personnel who are available

to support them through their Senior Years. Some highlights

were - the girls going to Girls Academy and making

facemasks, body scrubs and bath bombs and the fellas

engaging in team building activities with the Clontarf guys.

All students and Centralian Middle School staff had a tour of

the school and saw some classes in action, including

watching the school band ‘Juice’ practice for their final Year

11 Stage 1 assessment task. An introduction to the Colleges Values and Expectations and a typing activity where

they had to beat their teacher in a typing test (none of them did!). All students participated enthusiastically in the

activities. The Centralian Middle School staff and students were very positive about the experiences.

We are focussed on the next transition visit in Term 3 Week 8. We look forward to working with the Centralian

Middle School community on making the transition into Centralian Senior College as seamless and stress free as

possible. And building stronger connections between the two schools, where all parties have a thorough

understanding of what it will be like to be a Year 10 student in 2018.

Lyndsay Thomas - Seamless Learning Pathways Project Officer

Henry Bray the former Development Manager for Alice Springs Basketball took time out of his busy schedule to present an awesome Basketball workshop for Mrs De Kock¹s Stage 1 PE class on the Friday of week 7. Henry is an experienced coach and mentor in our Alice Springs Community. He is and currently a youth worker for Tangentyere based in Hidden Valley. We were happy to have his expertise to get the youngsters blood pumping. Henry gave them special drills and exercises to refine their footwork, passes and ball handling techniques. They even had a chance to play a quick game with Henry umpiring and playing a few tricks on them with the ball toss. A busy time of the year as students finish off their studies for Semester 1. This Semester has been very fruitful for some of our students. One student has finished six Stage 1 subjects which is a great effort. Another two students are progressing well in their Stage 2 subjects and will likely qualify for their Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training at mid year. This is particularly pleasing as both these girls have been working full time in an apprenticeship and traineeship. Well Done!

Alice Outcomes offers a great opportunity to continue studies around part time or full time work. Currently sixteen students are undertaking some form of paid employment around their studies. Best wishes to all over the mid Semester break and look forward to continuing the progress in Semester 2.

UPDATE: Fantastic news for one of our students, Evie Brash, as she has achieved great result this Semester. Not only has she managed to complete seven Year 11 subjects but has achieved an 'A' in all of them. As such, she is the student who has achieved the best result across the NT of all the Northern Territory School of Distance Education (NTSDE) students. She is to be highly commended for this and we look forward to working with you in Semester 2. Congratulations and well done again Evie.

Congratulations to our Year 12 Girls Academy students who recently completed the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Aspirations Program.

Between learning about employability skills, reflecting on their own top qualities, workstyles, ideal lifestyles and career possibilities, setting goals and career planning, the Employment Aspirations Program has shown the girls fresh new inspiring ways to embrace life and different ways and ideas to focus on regarding their future. They tell us they are feeling more confident and motivated to finish Year 12 and apply for jobs and university.

Since undertaking the course, we are excited to have learnt that the girls are interested in careers in Health, Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Social Work, Anthropology, Art and Photography, with many of our girls wanting to study at University next year or the year after.

We look forward to seeing these girls achieving their goals and finishing Year 12, and onto even bigger and better things!
