Government of India

Ministry of Earth Sciences

India Meteorological Department

Dated:14 May 2020

Current Weather Status and Outlook for next two weeks (14-27 May 2020) Significant Features

● Under favorable synoptic conditions, many parts of India mainly the Northern plains,

central and Eastern part, experienced stronger convective activities accompanied

with gusty winds and rainfall and isolated squalls for the week ending on 13 May.

Dust storms activities were reported from few locations of northwestern plains of

India including northern part of Delhi NCR on 10 May. Such weather has been

occurring across these areas for the 5th consecutive week. Mainly dry weather

prevailed over Gujarat and northern parts of Maharashtra states.

● No Heat Wave conditions have been reported from any parts of India till date for

month of May 2020.

● Movement of Western disturbances, persistence circulation at lower levels over north Rajasthan and establishment of moist laden easterly winds with interaction thereof, has caused scattered to widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains of northwest India and northern parts of Central India during the week. Thunderstorm accompanied with strong gusty winds, squalls dust storm and hail at isolated pales had been reported from parts of these regions, associated with the movement of the systems with peak activities on 10 May mainly over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

● Remnants of Western Disturbances supported by moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal have caused scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Northeast and adjoining areas of East India. Severe thunderstorms accompanied with strong gusty winds and hail also had been reported from parts of these regions during the week.

● Trough/wind discontinuities have caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over parts of Central, West and South Peninsular India along with isolated intense rainfall activity over South Peninsular India and isolated hail storm activity over parts of Central India.

Heavy rainfall (≥64.5 mm) had been observed at isolated places over Tamil Nadu,

Puducherry & Karaikkal and Kerala & Mahe on three days each; over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Odisha, Bihar and Telengana on one day each during the week. Temperature Scenario: The highest maximum temperature of 45.4 oC had been recorded at Churu (West Rajasthan) on 9th May 2020, over the plains of the country during the week.

Chief synoptic conditions as on 14 May 2020

♦ A Well-Marked Low Pressure Area lies over southeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood.

Associated cyclonic circulation extends upto mid-tropospheric levels.

♦ A Western Disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies runs with its axis at 5.8 km

above mean sea level now runs roughly along Longitude 62°E to the north of latitude 25°N.

♦ A cyclonic circulation extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level lies over West Rajasthan

& neighbourhood.

♦ A cyclonic circulation extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level lies over southern parts of

Assam & neighbourhood.

Page 27: Friday 15 May 2020 MORNING Time of Issue: 0730 hours IST ... Data... · Forecast and Warning for any day is valid from 0830 hours IST of day till 0830 hours IST of next day For more

3

♦ A trough/wind discontinuity runs from Marathwada to South Interior Karnataka across North

Interior Karnataka and extends upto 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Large scale features as on 14 May 2020

o The Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) index is currently in phase 2 with amplitude equal to 1. It

will continue in same phase during week 1 with amplitude remaining more than 1 during first

half of week 1 and will become less than 1 during later half. MJO will move to Phase 8 across

phases 5,6,7 during week 2. Thus MJO will support enhancement of convective activity over

the Bay of Bengal (BoB) during week 1.

o Currently, ENSO-neutral conditions are prevailing over equatorial Pacific Ocean. Sea surface

temperatures (SSTs) data for the week ending 10 May have cooled further compared to two

weeks ago, but remained warmer than average in parts of the east and far west of the equatorial

Pacific Ocean. Much of the central tropical Pacific SSTs are close to average for this time of the

year. The latest values of the three key NINO indices in the tropical Pacific for the week ending

10 May were: NINO3 +0.2 °C, NINO3.4 +0.2 °C and NINO4 +0.2 °C. All NINO indices have

cooled over the past fortnight, with NINO3 cooling by a significant amount (0.5 °C). The latest

MMCFS forecast indicates these conditions are likely to continue for the entire forecast

period.

o At present, near neutral IOD conditions are observed over Indian Ocean and the latest MMCFS

forecast indicates same IOD conditions are likely to continue during the entire forecast period.

Forecast for next two week

Week 1: (14-20 May 2020)

About Cyclone Forecast in the week and Advance of SW Monsoon: The Well-Marked Low

Pressure Area over southeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood is very likely to concentrate into a

Depression over central parts of south Bay of Bengal on tomorrow, the 15th May and further

intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over the same region by 16th May evening. It is very likely to move

northwestwards initially till 17th and then re-curve north-northeastwards towards north Bay of

Bengal during 18th-19th May.

♦ Conditions are likely to become favourable for advance of Southwest Monsoon into some parts

of southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands around 16th May,

2020.

About other Synoptic system/wind pattern forecast: Due to wind confluence at lower

tropospheric levels and supporting upper atmospheric features likely to persist , fairly widespread

rain/thundershowers very likely over Northeast India & Sub- Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim

and isolated to scattered over rest East India during next 2 days.

o Due to trough/wind discontinuity, isolated to scattered rain/thundershowers very likely over

central & south peninsular India during next 4-5 days. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning

Page 28: Friday 15 May 2020 MORNING Time of Issue: 0730 hours IST ... Data... · Forecast and Warning for any day is valid from 0830 hours IST of day till 0830 hours IST of next day For more

4

and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places also likely over these regions during same

period.

o Under the influence of feeble Western Disturbance at mid-tropospheric levels and easterlies at

lower tropospheric levels for 1-2 days, isolated to scattered rain/thundershower very likely over

Western Himalayan Region and isolated over plains of northwest India during 9 to 11 May, 2020.

Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning, hail and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places

also likely over these regions during same period.

o Fairly widespread to widespread rain/ thundershowers likely over Islands, North East India and

adjoining parts of East India. Heavy rainfall likely at a few places over Gangetic West Bengal on

19th and heavy to very heavy at a few places over Odisha on 19th and over Gangetic West

Bengal on 20th May.

o Isolated to scattered rain/ thundershowers likely over parts of south peninsular India.

o Mainly dry weather likely to prevail over the remaining parts of the country.

Cumulatively Rainfall for week 1: Excess rainfall very likely over Andaman and Nicober islands,

parts of eastern India and Adj northeastern states and across central parts of peninsular and west

coast of India during week 1. Areas likely to get excess rainfall during week 1 also plotted

in IMD ERF forecast rainfall anomalies map in Annexure III (Also, Ref Annexure IV for day

today rainfall at sub-division wise and Annexure V for cumulative for Week 1 prepared from MME

of GFS and CFS models products of IMD).

Week 2: (21-27 May 2020)

Cumulatively rainfall during week 2, Normal rainfall activities likely over Northeastern States

and parts of eastern India and over the west coast with mainly dry weather likely over rest parts

of the country (Ref Annexure III for rainfall anomalies in week 2 and annexure V for actual

and departures of rainfall likely from IMD MME CFS-GFS Model).

Maximum Temperature for week 1 & 2: (14-27 May 2020)

During week 1, Heat wave conditions in isolated pockets are very likely over Rajasthan

towards 2nd half of week 1. Average Max temp anomalies of 2 and 4°C above normal are plotted

in Annexure III IMD ERF Forecast max temp anomalies. For max temp anomalies of all ranges

refer Annexure VI from MME CFS-GFS.

During week 2, Average Max temp anomalies of 2 and 4°C above normal are plotted in Annexure

III IMD ERF Forecast max temp anomalies. It does not show any significant areas except part of

Bihar. For max temp anomalies of all ranges refer Annexure VI from MME CFS-GFS.

Cyclogenesis:

The Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) index is currently in phase 2 with amplitude equal to 1. It

Page 29: Friday 15 May 2020 MORNING Time of Issue: 0730 hours IST ... Data... · Forecast and Warning for any day is valid from 0830 hours IST of day till 0830 hours IST of next day For more

5

will continue in same phase during week 1 with amplitude remaining more than 1 during first

half of week 1. Thus, MJO is supporting cyclogeneses over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) during

week 1. In addition, most of the numerical models analysis and forecast including ECMWF,

IMD GFS, NCEP GFS, NEPS and NCUM are indicating cyclogenesis over central parts of south

BoB with date around 15th May, with intensification into cyclonic storm around 16th and initial

north-northwest movement till 17th and north-northeastwards recurvature during 18th-19th

towards northwest BoB. GPP forecast is indicating positive zone for cyclogenesis over south

Andaman Sea on 14th May with near northwards movement towards northwest BoB till 19th

May. MME (CFSv2) is also indicating high probability (>80%) of cyclogenesis over central parts

of south BoB during week 1. Various environmental conditions including ocean thermal energy,

sea surface temperature, low level vorticity, upper level divergence, lower level convergence

and wind shear etc. are also supporting cyclogenesis over central parts of south BoB.

Next weekly update will be issued on next Thursday i.e. 21 May 2020

BRIEF NOTE ON LIVE STORAGE STATUS OF 123 RESERVOIRS IN THE COUNTRY (WITH

REFERENCE TO RESERVOIR STORAGE BULLETIN OF 14.05.2020)

1. ALL INDIA STATUS

Central Water Commission is monitoring live storage status of 123 reservoirs of the country on weekly

basis and is issuing weekly bulletin on every Thursday. Out of these reservoirs, 43 reservoirs have

hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW. The total live storage capacity of these

123 reservoirs is 171.090 BCM which is about 66.36% of the live storage capacity of 257.812 BCM which

is estimated to have been created in the country. As per reservoir storage bulletin dated 14.05.2020, live

storage available in these reservoirs is 64.6 BCM, which is 38% of total live storage capacity of these

reservoirs. However, last year the live storage available in these reservoirs for the corresponding period

was 38.508 BCM and the average of last 10 years live storage was 39.217 BCM. Thus, the live storage

available in 123 reservoirs as per 14.05.2020 Bulletin is 168% of the live storage of corresponding period

of last year and 165% of storage of average of last ten years.

As per Table-01, the overall storage position is better than the corresponding period of last year in the

country as a whole and is also better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding

period.

2. REGION WISE STORAGE STATUS:

a) NORTHERN REGION

The northern region includes States of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. There are 8 reservoirs

under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 19.17 BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin

dated 14.05.2020, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 8.39 BCM which is 44%of total live

storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 46% and

average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 30% of live storage capacity of these

reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is l ess than the corresponding period of last year but is

better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

b) EASTERN REGION

The Eastern region includes States of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura and Nagaland. There are

18 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 19.43 BCM. As per Reservoir

Storage Bulletin dated 14.05.2020, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 7.69 BCM which is

40% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year

was 27% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 29% of live storage

capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is better than the corresponding period of

last year and is also better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

c) WESTERN REGION

The Western region includes States of Gujarat and Maharashtra. There are 42 reservoirs under CWC

monitoring having total live storage capacity of 35.24 BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated

14.05.2020, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 13.83 BCM which is 39% of total live

storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 15% and

average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 22% of live storage capacity of these

reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is better than the storage of last year and is also better than

the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

d) CENTRAL REGION

The Central region includes States of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and

Chhattisgarh. There are 19 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage

capacity of 44.45BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 14.05.2020, the total live

storage available in these reservoirs is 19.91 BCM which is 45% of total live storage

capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was

27% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 25% of live

storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is better than the

storage of last year and is also better than the average storage of last ten years during the

corresponding period.

e) SOUTHERN REGION

The Southern region includes States of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, AP&TG (2combined

projects in both states), Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. There are 36reservoirs under

CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 52.81 BCM. As per Reservoir

Storage Bulletin dated 14.05.2020, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is

14.79 BCM which is 28% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage

during corresponding period of last year was 14% and average storage of last ten years

during corresponding period was 17% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus,

storage during current year is better than the corresponding period of last year and is also

better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.
