FRIDAY 13th march 2015
News
It has been a busy week at NBHS with many of our senior students taking
preliminary practical exams and the S2s, S3s, S4s and S5s continuing the
process of making their course choices. Meanwhile many of our students have
been involved in concert rehearsals, drama rehearsals and sporting activities
with excellent results. As always, there is plenty to be proud of!
S 5/6 Future Skills
Ready, Steady Cook! came to the Home Economics department last week as
eight of our senior pupils created several different dishes. The delicious
selection included chicken and pork with noodles in an oyster sauce, beef
burgers and curry. The lesson was a great success and very much enjoyed by
all involved.

Outstanding Artwork
Last year the Scottish Qualifications Authority asked to keep one of our
student’s National 5 portfolios to use as an example of very high quality work
to show teachers on their “Understanding Standards” tour.
The portfolio, which belongs to S5 pupil
Fraser Scott, has now been returned to the
school and we are delighted to be able to
share it with you.

NBHS Shines at Equestrian Arena Event
Last week four of our pupils travelled to the Ian Stark Equestrian Centre in
Selkirk to compete in a National School Arena Event.
In Arena Eventing, riders must complete a timed
show-jumping phase, followed by a timed indoor
cross country phase. The riders are also judged on
their style.
Our first team event was the Intermediate class
(90cm-95cm) where Siobhan Duff, Anna Chalmers,
Rachel Jackson and Vikki Selby were up against
eight other teams. We saw some lovely rounds
over a tough, twisty course and the team finished a
fantastic 3rd overall. In individual standings, Rachel
Jackson was placed 3rd and Anna Chalmers was 4th.
NBHS then competed in the Open class (1m-1.05m)
and Anna Chalmers, Rachel Jackson and Vikki Selby
all jumped beautiful rounds. North Berwick
finished 2nd overall with Vikki Selby also being placed
2nd as an individual.
These excellent results mean that the Open team and Vikki Selby individually
have qualified to compete at the National Schools Arena Event Finals at
Addington Manor later this year. Many congratulations to all the competitors
for this fantastic achievement.
The team would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the Equitait Veterinary
Practice, who very
kindly donated money
to have saddle pads
made with the school
name on them. Our
thanks also to Joanne
Charlton for making
striped pompoms for
the riders’ hat silks,
which looked very
smart on the day.

NBHS S1 and U15 Basketball Teams Secure their Place
in the Scottish Cup Finals
Boys S1: NBHS 60 – 17 St Thomas of Aquins RC HS
The first game of the day started closely as neither team were able to take hold
of the lead, with the first
quarter ending with North
Berwick up one point. However
the second quarter was a
different affair; with a barrage
of baskets from Owen Mackle
and Fin Baxter, combined with
some stringy defence, North
Berwick pulled away to a 29-9
lead by halftime. North Berwick
kept on the pressure in the second half, with Shaun Samson repeatedly scoring
in transition, and secured their place in the final of the competition. It was
another great team effort, with all members of the 12 man squad playing
important minutes.
Scorers: Shaun Samson (14), Owen Mackle (13), Sam Edwards (8), Cameron
Issac (7), Fin Baxter (6), Jake Amis (2), Matthias Frommel (2), Ronan Glazik (2),
Scott Patey (2)

Boys U15: NBHS 61 – 47 Alford Academy
North Berwick were victors in a semi-final that was much closer than the score
suggests. The first quarter was a
high scoring affair, with both
teams finding ways to get to the
basket, finishing 20-17. With
Richard Montgomery forced to sit
due to foul trouble, Alford pulled
back the lead in the second
quarter going into half time up by
a point. Had it not been for
important baskets from Kyle
Graham, who scored all of North
Berwick’s points that quarter, the lead could have been greater. The third
quarter saw North Berwick ramp up the defensive intensity. Outstanding
efforts from Robbie Wales and Rory Machray held Alford’s two main scoring
threats to only a point between them. Rory Milne found his scoring touch
after a slow start, and hit a big three at the end of the quarter to put North
Berwick up 45-35. North Berwick managed to keep hold of the ten point lead
throughout the fourth quarter, booking their place in the final.
Scorers: Rory Milne (29), Kyle Graham (16), Richard Montgomery (12), Robbie
Wales (4)
Back row: Richard Montgomery, James Chalmers, Rory Milne, Robbie Wales, William Ladbrooke
Front row: Ciaran McSherry, Ross Lunn, Rory Machray, David Crowley, Kyle Graham

Hockey Success
Last week, two S2
teams competed in
the East Lothian
Tournament at
Dunbar High School.
North Berwick 1
won six games and
drew one of their
games finishing in 1st
place. North
Berwick 2 also
performed well finishing in 7th place overall. A huge well done to all the girls
that took part.
Meanwhile the S3 hockey team travelled to Peffermill to compete in the 2014/15 East District Hockey Tournament. Winning 2 out of 3 games in their section, the team were sitting comfortably in 2nd place which meant that they would play in the semi-final against St. George's. Despite a solid performance in both defence and attack the score was 0-0 at full time and the team had to go to penalties. All eyes were on goal keeper Fiona Sharp to save the goals from the skilful St. George's girls. Five penalties taken each and it was 4-4, this would only mean one thing....SUDDEN DEATH. St. George's stepped up to the plate first but couldn't get the ball past quick footed Fiona. Eilidh Goodall had all the pressure on her shoulders to score the winning goal. With some sleek movements around the keeper it was 1-0 to NBHS - the girls were in the final of the cup against George Watsons. Despite NBHS’s impressive individual skill and excellent teamwork, Watsons won 3-0. It is safe to say that the S3 NBHS hockey team can be very proud of what they have achieved. Well done girls, you deserved it!

Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships
S1 pupil Joe Donnelly represented NHBS at the Scottish Schools Annual Cross Country Championships in Irvine last Saturday. Running in blustery conditions in the U14 boys 3000m race, Joe was the first East Lothian finisher in his age category, finishing a respectable 47th out of 120 finishers. Well done Joe!
Football
The S2 U14 team played Preston Lodge HS on Wednesday in the second round of the Scottish Cup Plate event. Despite a brave performance in difficult, blustery conditions, they lost 5 - 2. Our scorers were Tadgh Flanagan-Woodhead and Campbell Notley.
All our efforts will now be concentrated on consolidating our position near the top of the East & Mid Lothians League with an away match at Lasswade HS on Friday.
And finally…
