A New Era in Activism
New Generation of dissatisfied Negroes coming of age in the early 1960’s.
Frustrated by the speed of change.
Built upon events at little Rock and the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Was on a massive scale.
Greensboro Sit-In 1st Feb 1960:
Allowed means to express anger, Were not arrested, Had Media coverage, Hundreds of Students joined, Resulted in Backlash.
SIT-INS• By April 50,000.
• Characterised by a strict non-violent ethos.
• At Greensboro in North Carolina CORE ran training sessions in non-violence.
• Took 6 months before Negroes served at the ‘White only’ counter in Greensboro.
• By end of 1960 155 communities had seen sit-ins.
• Huge Media attention.
• Key point the scale of activity.
SNCC Organized by the ‘Snick’ SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee)
Idea to travel on Buses and sit in at stop-overs: RESTROOMS- WAITING ROOMS- RESTAURANTS- Began 4th May 1961. First bus set ablaze in Alabama. President Kennedy sent federal marshals. Over a thousand participated. Half were white. Most from north. SNCC a progression from 1960 Sit-Ins.
