A. Freedom fighters don’t add rules in order to gain _____________________ from God. But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. v. 3

B. Freedom fighters don't enslave others with _______________________ standards. Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery ... v. 4

On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised (for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles) ... vv. 7-8

B. Freedom fighters ____________________________ God’s grace through charity. Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do. v. 10

C. Freedom fighters ______________________ with others based on their beliefs. For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. v. 12

1. What standards or behaviors should a true Christian display?

2. Skim over Acts 13–15:1-6 and read Galatians 2:1-14. Paul had been away from Jerusalem for 14 years and was excited to tell the Christians there what was happening (Acts 14:27). While he was away, what were the Jewish legalists (Judaizers) trying to accomplish, and to what end (Acts 14:2-6, 15:1)?

3. What was the purpose of Paul's return to Jerusalem and why was it so important to him?

4. How does a Christian today become a “freedom fighter” like Paul was? How do we respond to those who believe salvation equals Christ plus good works, and not get

caught up in legalism ourselves?

5. How does the true freedom of the gospel and a stance against legalism benefit others (believers or unbelievers) and affect how we interact with them?

6. Look back at your answers to the first question. Of course there are non-negotiables for a Christ follower (saved by Jesus alone, living by the Spirit, obedience to God's Word, etc.), but are any of your answers actually legalism in disguise? How have you subtly applied legalism to someone (or even yourself) so they conform to your idea of a Christian?

his associates took for the liberty

the church into legalism? What might

the results have been? Would Antioch

have continued to be the great

missionary church that sent out Paul

and Barnabas (Acts 13)? Would they,

instead, have sent out the 'missionaries'

of the circumcision party and either

captured or divided the churches

Paul had already founded? You can

see that this problem was not a

matter of personality or party; it was

a question of 'the truth of the gospel.'

And Paul was prepared to fight for it.”
