Arts + Public Life programs take place at the Arts Incubator and Green Line Performing Arts Center, and are FREE and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Some programs may require pre-registration, and some partner programs may require a fee.

Year of Women in Jazz: Christian JaLonWomen in Jazz Photography Reception | 6:00-7:00pmJoin us for a reception in the DelGiorno Lobby from 6-7pm celebrating the works of Lauren Deutsch, a Chicago-based photographer who has been documenting Chicago’s Jazz community for over 40 years.

Year of Women in Jazz presents Christian JaLon, a singer/songwriter, poet, & published author from the South Side of Chicago. While she’s been singing in the church choir since she was as young as 7 years old, she began being active in her artistry at the age of 13, posting cover songs onto YouTube. At the age of 16, JaLon joined Young Chicago Authors ‘Louder Than A Bomb’ poetry slam, as well as their open mic nights, alongside Chance The Rapper’s Open Mike nights. Christian has 3 projects under her belt at the moment; “SELF” (2016), “Vinyled Love” (2017), and “If You Let Me” (2018), and has performed at many festivals in Chicago, including The Jazz Institute’s 40th Annual Festival in 2018 and Mamby on Beach in 2018.

Grown Folks StoriesGrown Folks Stories, created by Cara Brigandi and Eric Williams, founder and owner of The Silver Room, is two hours of five minute stories that range from the hilarious to the absolutely somber. Come join this ever-popular gathering of nonprofessional, unrehearsed storytellers, who give us the real stories we live everyday. There is no theme, no judging, no poetry, no readings. It’s storytelling that you’ve never experienced before.

Amid Kinship is the culminating exhibition for the 2018-19 resident artists, Jarvis Boyland, Brandon Breaux, and Amina Ross. Amid Kinship features new works the artists created during their ten-month residency at the Arts Incubator in Washington Park that collectively reflects on relationships, everyday divinity, and transformative spaces.

About the artists:

Jarvis BoylandJarvis Boyland (he/him), originally from Memphis, TN, navigates intersections of black identity through portraiture. Boyland’s paintings focus on queer men of color within intimate spaces, sensitively highlighting the nuances of complex interpersonal relationships, identities, and locales. jarvisboyland.com

Brandon BreauxBrandon Breaux (he/him) is a fine artist and multidisciplinary designer from the South Side of Chicago, whose creative experience is comprised of painting, sculpture, web, video, print, and interactive projects. Widely known as the artist behind all three of Chance the Rapper’s iconic album covers, Breaux’s work has a distinct aesthetic for depicting life in Chicago and primarily focuses on providing representation of diverse narratives within the fine art space. brandonbreaux.com

Amina RossAmina Ross (they/them) is an undisciplined creator. They work across mediums, including video installations, sculpture, and curatorial engagements. Ross has exhibited work, spoken on panels, and taught workshops in various spaces throughout the United States. aminaross.com

SUN, AUG 44:00–6:30pmLens Noir: A Staged Reading of Tina Bell’s Cut the Baby in HalfCut the Baby in Half is a one-act play that chronicles what happens when a young woman is dying and must choose a guardian — the mother who abandoned her or the stepmother who raised her — to love and care for her young daughter. As the daughter battles a particularly virulent form of breast cancer and her own indecision, the two moms fight it out with each other, their grief, and unforgiving pasts. This event will be a staged reading of the play by professional actors, written by Tina Jenkins Bell and directed by Aaron Mays.

At this culminating event, summer program participants and interns will share their final projects - performances, designed objects, presentations, and more. All community members are welcome to attend and celebrate our teen artists’ creative accomplishments.

South Side Story TimeBring your kids to listen, learn, sing, dance, and interact! South Side Story Time is a monthly gathering that curates readings for its young attendees along with the chance for their parents to socialize. Hosts Keewa Nurullah of Kido and Megan Jeyifo are elated to share their family-friendly faves on the Arts Block. Open to all ages but geared towards 0 - 6.

Erthe St. James LiveThe GreenLight Series presents a special performance and conversation with Erthe St. James. A native from the Westside of Chicago, this 28-year-old Soul singer has obtained the ability to intertwine genres to create his own unique blend of soul, jazz, & funk. Playing Chicago venues, with his band, The ErtheTones, such as House of Blues, The California Clipper, The Bassment, The Promontory, Reggie’s Music Joint, and opening for artists such as Erykah Badu, Estelle, Tye Tribbet, & Nikki Giovani. He can also be seen on supporting vocals as a member of Sam Trump & The Soul Vortex. Erthe and his band have proven to be one of the leading forces on the Chicago soul music scene.
