& Recycle


Currently:

o In today’s world the importance of recycling is becoming a greater concern both for the general public and also to the economy.

- Recycling has become a major issue as it has been suggesting for years that the earth is being depleted too fast to sustain a healthy balance.

o Many schools and offices should start recycling more because that is where a lot of paper and plastic is used.

o The earth’s natural resources are being consumed at a rate that reinforces the idea that we are living for today and the future generations will be paying for the consequences.

- However, many people and just as importantly businesses are realizing the problem at hand and the importance of recycling.


The three R’s:

o Help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away.

o Conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy.


Reduce:

o To make something smaller or use less, resulting in a smaller amount of waste.

o A key part of waste reduction is conservation—using natural resources wisely, and using less than usual in order avoid waste.

o The best way to manage waste is to not produce it. This can be done by shopping carefully and being aware of a few guidelines:


Reduction Guidelines:

• Buy products in bulk. Larger, economy-size products or ones in concentrated form use less packaging and usually cost less per ounce.

• Avoid over-packaged goods, especially ones packed with several materials such as foil, paper, and plastic.

- They are difficult to recycle, plus you pay more for the package.

• Avoid disposable goods, such as paper plates, cups, napkins, razors, and lighters.

- Throwaways contribute to the problem, and cost more because they must be replaced again and again.


Reduction Guidelines:

•Buy durable goods - ones that are well-built or that carry good warranties.

-They will last longer, save money in the long run and save landfill space.

• Make two-sided copies when ever possible. • Use electronic mail or main bulletin board.

• Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins.

• Use a dish cloth instead of paper towels.


Reuse:

o Recover products and extend their lifespan which has both financial and environmental benefits.

o Reusing saves time, money, energy and precious resources.

oThe following are ways to reuse items:


Reuse:o Products for the same purpose.

-Save paper and plastic bags, and repair broken appliances, furniture and toys.

o Products in different ways. -Use a coffee can to pack a lunch; use plastic microwave dinner trays as picnic dishes.

o Sell old clothes, appliances, toys, and furniture in garage sales or ads, or donate them to charities.

o Use resealable containers rather than plastic wrap.

o Use a ceramic coffee mug instead of paper cups.

o Grocery bags or bring your own cloth bags to the store.

- Do not take a bag from the store unless you need one.


Recycle:

o When you take used materials and make them into new products you are RECYCLING.

o Recycling helps to reduce the growing amount of waste currently inundating landfills.

- Depending upon the type of waste, recycling can also reduce air pollution, water pollution, and global warming.

o Recycling is one of the best ways for you to have a positive impact on the world in which we live.


Recycling Tips:• Buy products made from recycled material.

• Look for the recycling symbol or ask store managers or salesmen.

- The recycling symbol means one of two things, either the product is made of recycled material, or the item can be recycled.

• Check flyers, brochures, and twitter account to see what they accept, and begin collecting those materials.

- These can include metal cans, newspapers, paper products, glass, plastics and oil.

• Consider purchasing recycled materials when purchasing material for office or school supply,

• Buy products made from material that is collected for recycling in your community.

• Use recycled paper for letterhead, copier paper and newsletters.


Benefits of Recycling:

o Protects and expands US manufacturing jobs and increases US competitiveness.

o Reduces the need for land filling and incineration.

o Prevents pollution caused by the manufacturing of products from virgin materials.o Saves energy.

o Decreases emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change.

o Conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals.

o Helps sustain the environment for future generations.


Facts:o Paper

• Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials. • It takes 24 trees to make 1 ton of newspaper.

o Plastic • 275,000 tons of plastic are used each year that’s about 15 million bottles per day. • Most families throw away about 40kg of plastic per year, which could otherwise be recycled.• Plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose.

o Aluminum• 24 million tons of aluminum is produced annually. • Aluminum cans can be recycled and ready to use in just 6 weeks.


Importance:

o Recycling is incredibly important as a means to reduce poisonous emissions into the atmosphere and also to spare our natural resources.

• Today many companies and individuals are improving their recycling habits by coming up with ways to reduce what they use. They are also reusing much of the original materials sent out for consumer use.

oThe importance of recycling besides being beneficial for the earth is beneficial for businesses as they secure better relations with the consumers over the matter of saving the environment.

• They will also spend less on production costs and the consumers will pay less for the goods which will encourage more purchasing as their dollar will have more value on recycled products.


o People who are recycle conscious want to support companies that have a positive influence in society and that can be respected for reasons of morality.

o When companies and the consumers can work together they can combine the importance of recycling and truly make a difference to the Earth’s health.

• For example, Panera Bread does not use plastic utensils or plates they use real glass and metal. •Recently they switched their to-go containers from plastic to paper.


Importance:

The importance of recycling is now held in such a high regard even famous people are pressing the slogan reduce, reuse, recycle.

Al Gore is now on a mission to educate the world on the effects of global warming. He is also concerned about how we can reduce the causes of global warming.

A major part in reducing is how we can recycle much of what we use instead of turning it into unusable waste.


Oprah is another famous person who has recognized the importance of recycling and encouraged all of her views to take action!
