Ferold Arend, Walmart’s first corporate president and chief operating officer, passed away on Oct. 8, 2015, at the age of 90. Ferold started working for Sam Walton in 1966, when only a handful of Walmart stores existed. By the time he retired in

1982, there were more than 500. In his time at Walmart, Ferold streamlined store operations and frequently spoke on the importance of personal integrity. His Walmart World column, which often appeared alongside Sam’s, held invaluable teachings for all Walmart associates. His role in Walmart’s success was recognized by Sam, who said, in 1978, “I don’t know of anyone who has contributed more toward our total success as a retail company than Ferold Arend.”

Ferold’s name will live on as part of Walmart through The Walmart Museum, home of the Ferold Arend Studio, which is used for interviews with those who have shaped our company’s history and for public radio broadcasts in Northwest Arkansas.

Bryan Morrison

Dedication, loyalty, respect, teamwork: Sam Walton brought a lot of military values to Walmart.Bryan Morrison

Promoted to: co-manager, Store 5192, Sacramento, Calif.

What His Manager Says “Bryan works side by side with people and teaches them. If they’re not a good fit in one area, he moves them to areas where they can be successful. He’s fair and consistent, and he holds everyone accountable but earns the respect of the associates. His leadership is contagious.” Steve Tapp, former store manager, Store 5979, Lincoln, Calif. (now store manager, Store 1760, Folsom, Calif.)

What Bryan Says“As an assistant manager [at Store 5979], I wasn’t afraid to get my hands dirty. I get that from the military. Our call-ins were terrible, but I’d get in there, throw freight, and talk to the associates. They saw me out there and didn’t want me to have to throw twice as much, and the call-ins decreased. It’s about respect.”

Lessons From Bryan· Get your hands dirty.· Communicate with your co-workers.· Earn people’s respect.

Voices / You Said It

How does your store or facility give back

to your community?

There are churches and food banks in our community that help the underprivileged, and our store gives to them on a daily basis. We keep track on the computer of what we give and how much. It makes a big difference for a lot of people.

Barbara Smallwood, cash office associate, Store 3249, Coats, N.C.

My personal favorite is when we take donations for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. We do a competition with neighboring stores to see who can get the most. It pushes everybody to work hard and get as much as they can.

Kyle Meyerhofer, department manager, bakery, Store 3891, Waukegan, Ill.

My family is Native American—Choctaw. We did an event where some of my family members educated people about the tribe. They brought food, wore traditional dress, and talked about our history. On the same day, we had the police department, fire department, and some other organizations set up outside to hand out pamphlets and balloons and educate people about what they do.

Justin Davis, office associate, Store 893, Lindsay, Okla.

We have an annual event downtown to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie County. It’s like a big carnival. Managers and associates volunteer for the booths, and we do a food and toy drive for families.

Lisa Williams, asset protection, Distribution Center 7038, Fort Pierce, Fla.

1Simply greeting customers or taking them to products they need is a proven deterrent to shoplifting. In that way, great customer service can help save your store money, maintain inventory, and reduce costs.

Studies conducted around shrink (the loss of inventory due to internal theft, shoplifting, paperwork errors, or supplier fraud) show that everyone can play a role in controlling these losses.

Want to learn more about shrink? Find the Shrink Operations Center in your store. Launched in September, it’s a new, easy-to-use digital hub where managers and asset protection can handle shrink-management activities. The center can help you learn the actions your store is taking to control shrink. Even if you aren’t assigned an action, remember you can help by following the 10-Foot Rule.

2. Check out the Shrink Most Wanted card game in your store. Each card addresses a top item or category, outlines its impact, and lists solutions to address the causes of shrink.

“The best thing about the program is it’s sim-ple, engaging, and fun because everyone can get involved while reaching our ultimate goal of reducing shrink. It will make a huge difference in stores,” says Cora Hausen, asset protection manager at Store 1735 in Wheeling, Ill.

New Programs Fight Shrink

Why the cogs? Our shrink logo (shown above) represents how processes and your actions in stores are all interconnected—and many of those actions can impact shrink.

First Distribution Center Opens in MinnesotaThe first Walmart distribution center (DC) in Minnesota opened in August. The cold-and-frozen storage facility will distribute perishable food to 45 Walmart stores and 23 Sam’s Clubs in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. “The miles from the DC to all these stores/clubs serviced will be 50 percent fewer with the Mankato DC in place,” says Chris Sultemeier, executive vice president of Logistics at the Home Office. “The addition of the Mankato DC to the perishable food distribution network will save almost $15 million a year in transportation costs.” Faster delivery will help improve the freshness of the product, in-stock, and customers’ shopping experiences.

Walmart currently has 163 distribution centers; this is the first to open since 2007. The facility is expected to provide an economic boost to the area with the hiring of more than 400 associates—including more than 50 military veterans—as well as through the goods and services the 450,000-square-foot facility will use.

53Greenlight A Vet Movement Honors Veterans This is a bright idea: Walmart is kicking off a nationwide movement to show veterans that they’re valued members of our communities. And we’re doing it in a simple way: with green lightbulbs.

What it’s called: Greenlight A Vet

How it works: You simply change one lightbulb to green for Nov. 11 (Veterans Day). The green lightbulbs represent “greenlighting” veterans back into society. You can also volunteer with a local veterans’ group, spread the word on social media with #GreenlightAVet, or display green lights in stores. (You can find bulbs on the Greenlight A Vet pallets in stores.)

To learn more about the movement, visit greenlightavet.com.

Native American Heritage Day Is ComingIn 2009, Congress passed legislation that established the Friday immediately following Thanksgiving Day of each year as Native American Heritage Day.The American Indian and Alaska Native People are the original inhabitants of what is now the United States. This November, help celebrate their contributions, sacrifices, achievements, and cultural legacy.

Learn more about the celebration at walmartworld.com/NativeAmericanHeritage.

Sam’s Club Auto Sales BeginSam’s Club is partnering with online car-shopping service TrueCar Inc. to operate Sam’s Club auto sales. The new program will give members access to more than 10,000 TrueCar dealers with guaranteed savings on new cars and deals on used cars. Another bonus? To help shoppers see if they’re scoring a deal, the service will allow shoppers to see what others paid for the same car. Seong Ohm, senior vice president of merchandise business service at Sam’s Club, says the program was born out of feedback from member surveys, and adds that the response to the program has been phenomenal sofar. “Our service provides customers transparency, and we take all the hassle out of negotiating while giving members knowledge of market prices,” she says. Must-See TV(PI)Here’s how one electronics associate boosted sales of a TV by roughly 2,300 percent.

It all started with a friendly competition between store manager and associate: This past spring, Walmart relaunched the VPI (Volume Producing Item) program, which encourages associates to get behind a particular product and market it like crazy. Store Manager Gary Wilson of Store 2515 in Phoenix immediately started promoting an Intex queen-size airbed in sporting goods. “He was getting a little too confident about winning,” jokes Allen de la Fuente, who was the zone merchandise supervisor for entertainment. “I started looking at what would sell well from my department. My goal was to beat the store manager!”

First, Allen chose a product that suited his market and was lagging in sales: an Emerson 32-inch flat-screen HDTV, then priced $168. Then, he set up a 16-foot run of 48 TVs in action alley and posted a sign near the store’s entrance to drive customers to the display. For the rest of May, Allen and nine other associates kept the display stocked—no small task since the TVs were reordering so quickly they had to go directly from truck to sales floor. How did they do it? Allen picked a TV that was priced right for the customer base, and the team touted the value of the larger screen when shoppers were checking out smaller TVs.

By the end of May, Allen’s TV outsold Gary’s airbed—and every VPI in the region—and was named regional winner for the month. (Sales rose from $900 in May 2014 to $22,000 in May 2015.) Sales remained steady all summer. Allen, now support manager over entertainment, says he’s now a believer in the power of VPI. “I am blown away by the response.”

Allen de la Fuente (left), support manager, entertainment, used teamwork (one of his successful VPI tips) to sell TVs and breeze past Store Manager Gary Wilson and his airbed.

A Franchise Reborn! Disney purchases Lucasfilm, owner of the Star Wars franchise. A new trilogy of films, plus spin-offs, is announced.

April 16, 2014

Throwing Down the GauntletTasha, Andy, and seven other members of Walmart’s entertainment and toy teams travel to California to meet with executives from Disney and Lucasfilm, discussing content, merchandise, and what customers would want. “We threw down the gauntlet that we wanted Walmart to be the destination for Star Wars,” says Andy.

Oct. 15, 2014

A Big Bet Takes Shape Buyers invite Disney leadership to the Home Office to discuss all of the Star Wars merchandise to come. This includes items across just about every department of Walmart: toys and collectibles as well as food, softlines, health and beauty, apparel, and more. Strict rules are laid down by Disney to keep the prod-ucts—which could reveal details about the upcom-ing movie—secret until the very last moment. “No toy has ever been embargoed like this,” says Tasha.

Feb. 14–17, 2015

Behind Closed DoorsAt the 2015 North American International Toy Fair in New York City, Walmart’s toy team gets a first glimpse of the new Star Wars toys. They sign nondisclosure agree-ments (NDAs) barring them from discussing what they’ve seen with any unauthorized people. (Indeed, some product and character names can’t even be used in internal emails, for fear that they could be leaked to the press.) However, the toy team is now able to determine how much space is needed on modulars. They begin planning toy orders.

Walmart Awakens Tasha receives an email from account executives working with Disney: Star Wars: Episode 7 (later Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will be released on Dec. 18, 2015. She begins planning meetings with Walmart’s entertainment team to ensure that Walmart will have the merchandise that cus-tomers want. “You have to know what matters to your customers,” Tasha says, “so that you can deliver what they want. And that’s important to us at Walmart.”

Layaway Begins/ Merchandise ArrivesLayaway begins for the 2015 holiday shopping season; according to Tasha, it begins early this year, in large part to help customers purchase Star Wars merchandise.

Stores begin receiving The Force Awakens merchandise. The Home Office monitors sales closely to ensure that no new merchandise goes on the floor or is sold before the embargo ends on Force Friday.

Holiday MeetingAt Walmart’s 2015 Holiday Meeting in Denver, store managers get more information about Force Friday. Many packages still feature shadow items, but managers are able to look at pallet trains, signage, and other promotional items. At this point, Tasha says, she and her team have largely done all they can to prepare. It’s up to the stores now to effectively bring the merchandise to customers.

The Making of a Big Bet

Sept. 4, 2015It’s Here!Force Friday begins. “This was a relay,” Tasha says. “We passed the baton; stores took it and finished the race. They delivered for our customers.”

Sept. 14, 2015

Success! The numbers come in: Force Friday No. 1 was a success. “We beat our sales plan for the first week,” Andy says. Next up: Event No. 2.

Nov. 13–16, 2015 Battlefront Is Unleashed Star Wars Battlefront, the highly anticipated video game that fills in the story between episodes six and seven and revisits classic Star Wars battles, is to be released at 12:01 a.m., Nov. 17. A weekend-long event will allow preorders, and at 3,000 stores, players will be able to demo the game for the first time. It’s Elec-tronic Arts’ largest preplay in-store demo: Preplays are usually only offered online or at a few stores.

What’s a typical day like for you?It starts with things like assigning associates throughout the department and scanning and auditing bins through the CAP program. I’ll check out shelf availability after lunch; I’ll look into price changes.

What’s your favorite part of being a department manager? I like planning the merchandising. When sales increase, it’s a good feeling to say you had a part in pushing those sales.

What’s your biggest challenge? You can only do so much in an eight-hour shift. Fitting all your duties into thattime frame can be difficult.

What’s it like during the holiday shopping season? It’s organized chaos. During Blitz, I make sure merchandise is staged for when we’re open at midnight and have features ready to roll out.

Do you prepare for work any differently during the holidays? Usually it’s establishing a plan with the expectation that the plan is going to change five or six times.

What’s the craziest part of the holiday experience?Watching the lines rush in right at midnight. One year we let customers into the front of the store because it was below zero outside.

Walmartworld.com 25

My father was a Marine; that’s part of why I wanted to join. And I did so on the day I turned 18—Dec. 7, 1987—before I’d even

finished high school. I served for eight years, doing combat tours in both Somalia and Iraq, before rejoining civilian life in 1996 as a Marine Reservist. At that point, I hoped to work in law enforcement, but the pay was dismal. I looked some more and ended up in retail. At the time, Walmart was starting to build Supercenters; when they built one in Indianapolis, I was recruited. I felt a connection through the company’s commitment to veterans, and I loved the wealth of opportunities there, but I grew to miss the military cause. So, in 2003, when I was a market grocery manager, I joined the Army National Guard. As a guardsman, I helped in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina for three months, all with Walmart’s blessing. They encouraged me to go, and they allowed me to come back—I even got a promotion shortly after I returned. They were amazingly gracious, and they were gracious again when, in June 2006, I was called up to go to Iraq. Five months later, I found myself in the firestorm that ended my trip.

Utter ChaosIt happened on my last day in Iraq: Nov. 29, 2006. I was the Army National Guard’s Police Transition Team Officer in Ramadi, leading about 15 American soldiers in training more than 200 Iraqi police. We’d just returned to the Al Hyria Police Station after walking the neighborhoods—what we call “soft ops,” talking to Iraqis and their families, looking for explosives, noting anything even remotely suspicious. It was just after noon; I remember that it was very warm. Then the world exploded. Mortars

rained down; there was shrapnel and incoming fire. It was utter chaos. A mortar landed close to me as I struggled to get my men in a position to return fire, and the concussive force of the blow and the shrapnel that ripped through me are the sources of my enduring injuries. But I don’t recall feeling much at the time. My adrenalin was raging. I needed to get my wounded soldiers and Iraqis out of there. As the firefight died down, I mobilized the able-bodied to get the wounded—Iraqis as well as

Americans—back to safety at Camp Ramadi. That battle-time decision is why I was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Sam Walton Hero Award, all tremendous honors. But what I did that day was simply what I had been trained all my life to do.

More Serious Than I ThoughtWhen the wounded had all been evacuated, I finally had the mental space to evaluate my own situation. That’s when I noticed that my wounds, which

were all to my left side—the side closest to the mortar—were more serious than I had thought. I was medevaced to a succession of hospitals, first in Iraq, then in Germany, and finally Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where I stayed for the next five months. I was in danger of losing my left eye; I’m legally blind in that eye today. I also have little feeling on the left side of my face, so, while I was recovering, I also had to relearn to speak. And there was the pesky problem of a moderate traumatic brain injury to deal with. It wasn’t until a year after my release from Walter Reed that I was able to go back to Walmart. Julie Murphy, then my regional vice president, had been waiting patiently and showing me and my family amazing

above-and-beyond support. I needed it: To this day, my brain injury makes it tough for me to remember small things. But I have learned to live with and work around my deficits—the operative word being “live.” So many of my fellow warriors didn’t. It’s something I thought about a lot as I recovered. And I started to think that I could help.

Giving a Helping HandWhile I was at Walter Reed, I got involved in the Wounded Warrior Project, and it was through that organization and my own experience that I came to see an equally urgent need for the families of the wounded and fallen. These are families who’ve had their husbands and fathers taken from them only to then have their homes, their dignity, and their dreams ripped from them, too. At Walter Reed I realized that I got to come back—to my family. To Walmart. I found myself asking, what if I hadn’t been so lucky? So in 2009, I co-founded Helping Hands for Freedom with the goal of helping military families in need. We assist with rent and bills when it’s needed, and we try to fulfill the dreams of the children of the fallen and wounded. We do anything and everything we can—we recently helped the family of a killed-in-action serviceman; the family had fallen on hard times and was homeless. We helped them find a home, paid the first few months’ rent and utilities, and got them clothes and food to help them get a new start. It’s work like this that helps me feel strong and whole. Even healed. It means something to work for a company that stands behind veterans. I saw it and experienced it firsthand through my deployments. But it wasn’t until I got hurt and really needed Walmart’s commitment, and received it, that I saw the sincerity behind the words and the actions behind the words. Those actions, that support—they’re what I want to give back. Just because I can.

A Family- Supporting WalkHelping Hands for Freedom (hh4f.org)—one of the Hallmark Channel’s National Military Family Charities of the Year in 2014—supports the families of veterans who are either wounded in conflict or don’t return home at all. In spring of 2016, the organization is planning Route for the Brave (routeforthebrave.org), a walk across America to raise funds for a retreat house for families of fallen or wounded warriors. “We’ll be walking across U.S. Route 40,” says Patrick, “and we’d love any Walmart stores along the route to send associates to walk and/or to cheer—and we won’t turn away donations, either.” Visit the walk’s website to see when walkers will be near your town.

We Are WalmartFor you. By you. About you.

Imagine you’re about 8 years old, driven to a Walmart store on one of the luxury buses used by touring music stars. When you arrive, characters like the Grinch, Shrek, and Raggedy Ann and Andy greet you, then you’re given $150, and you get to go in the store and buy whatever you want.

Donna Yardley, invoice associate at Store 1376 in Hendersonville, Tenn., has been working for 14 years with a nonprofit organization called Christmas 4 Kids Inc. (C4K) to make this scenario a reality. Started in 1982, Christmas 4 Kids is a multipart event: Every November, a country music concert is held at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville (this year’s headliners include The Marshall Tucker Band and Craig Wayne Boyd, the winner of season seven of The Voice) to raise funds. Then in December, tour bus drivers pick up about 400 underprivileged children from the Hendersonville area and bring them to a Christmas party hosted by Santa and Mrs. Claus. After that, they proceed to Store 1376, where they are given a winter coat (purchased by the charity, supplied by Walmart) and $150 to buy whatever they want. The kids are accompanied in the store by a chaperone.

Donna serves on the Christmas 4 Kids board and gives credit to Walmart for not only helping to sponsor the event, but also allowing it to happen during the busy holiday season. “Walmart allows us to take up half the parking lot. We know it’s an inconvenience, but it’s the right thing to do, and we are very grateful,” she says. “When those buses come in, and all the associates are lined up and clapping, and some are in costumes, the kids on the buses have their faces pressed against the glass with awe. They are so excited.”

Steve appreciates the flexibility of his job at Walmart.I started when I was in high school. I needed to make a living, but my dream was to be a farmer. Today, I do both. I have a farm with my father and brother, and we have 60 head of cattle. The flexibility at Walmart is good: My boss works with me when I need to take care of the farm. I also like that my job lets me move around and do maintenance on different things, so I don’t get bored.

Phyllis enjoys the challenge of new positions. If you want to learn something, just come to Walmart. I started out as a sales clerk, then I became a department manager and had to learn how to do that job. Now, I’m on the CAP 1 team, and I had to learn that. I enjoy it, though. It’s a new challenge, but I like a challenge. I’ve been working with good associates and management all these years. They’ve really been good to me. I like meeting customers, and I try to get along with everybody. I’ve really enjoyed my career.

Marcie has been supported by her Walmart family. You should never think a question you have is dumb. When you start out, you can’t know everything, and unless you ask questions, you can’t learn. Walmart’s taught me to be respectful to other people; you have to be nice to everybody, not just at Walmart! It’s family-oriented here. When I’ve needed help, my Walmart family has always come through for me. When someone needs something or is struggling, we all pull together and help.

Susan’s advice: Tackle every project a piece at a time. You learn a lot working in receiving. It would be a good procedure for associates to see the freight flow from receiving to each area of the store to the register in order to understand how each facet works. There’s never a dull minute here. One of my favorite parts of the job is, in the morning, seeing a whole stack of things you need to complete—and as long as the day goes smoothly, at the end of the day there’s nothing left.

MIKE GOODMAN | ASSET PROTECTION MANAGER | STORE 580 | BARTOW, FLA.

A Real HeroWhile in the military, Mike Goodman, an asset protection manager at Store 580, in Bartow, Fla., learned many skills that have served him well in his Walmart career. One skill he wound up having to use on the job: CPR.

Last December, while working as an asset protection associate at Store 725, in Haines City, Fla., Mike noticed a woman on the floor in the grocery vestibule. It was customer Ann Carnes, who’d suffered a heart attack. She wasn’t breathing and had no pulse.

Mike sprang into action. “I instructed the assistant manager to call 911 while I did CPR,” he says. After eight minutes, Mike managed to restore her pulse, and paramedics soon arrived to take Ann to the hospital.

Doctors told her the only reason she survived is because Mike kept her blood pumping.

“I owe a lot to Mike for stepping up, thinking out of the box, and doing what needed to be done,” Ann says. “He saved my life.”

Mike’s quick thinking was inspired by his military training, and Walmart’s commitment to veterans and military personnel is part of why he’s grateful to work for the company. “Walmart recognizes the need for veterans to be able to get good jobs,” he says. “And to have such a big player in society acknowledge what’s going on with troops and encourage support with things like the Greenlight A Vet campaign (see Page 15), it really means a lot.”

“For me, serving the community is all about life fulfillment,” says Eric Neuyou, replenishment manager, adult, youth, and kids bedding, at the Home Office. That passion for helping others is why Eric volunteered to lead his department’s community-involvement activities— starting with Boys & Girls Club of Benton County.

The project was a community garden. According to Hannah Whitehead, Boys & Girls Club program director, it was meant to help teach kids about gardening while providing fresh produce to low-income families. Unfortunately, a late snow and lack of manpower stalled the

project, and Hannah feared they wouldn’t be able to plant before it got too hot. Then Eric stepped in.

He and eight other associates spent an afternoon building boxes [for raised beds], moving compost and soil, and planting tomatoes, peppers, carrots, onions, and more. “They were crucial” to the success of the project, Hannah says. Eric also applied for a Volunteerism Always Pays (VAP) grant, which earned $500 for Boys & Girls Club of Benton County.

“The kids love the garden,” Hannah says. “They like to see how simple it is to grow your own food. It amazes and intrigues them. Walmart helps us a lot.”

WESLEY ROSSELET | CASHIER | STORE 1823 | HANOVER, PA.

The Long Ride“You literally have no choice but to keep moving,” Wesley Rosselet, cashier at Store 1823 in Hanover, Pa., says about the longest bike ride he’s ever done: a little more than 3,200 miles, from Delaware to California, to raise money to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. We introduced you to Wesley in May, as he was preparing to embark on his journey, and caught up with him again to find out whether his trip was a success.

Wesley’s journey, inspired by a friend who has the disease, wasn’t easy. “A couple of times I was tempted to [give up and] get on the Amtrak,” he says. “But the support from my community was so strong that I didn’t ever feel that giving up was an option.”

His fellow associates helped as well. Many made donations, and Walmarts in a number of cities provided Wesley with meals, gift cards, Gatorade, and Clif Bars to help him keep moving.

Wesley’s hard work and perseverance were worth it. Not only did he get many once-in-a-lifetime memories (including seeing the Rocky Mountains for the first time from the ground), but he also raised $3,896 for the ALS Association, almost $1,000 more than his original goal.

Since returning, he’s shared stories and pictures with his fellow associates, and customers who found out about his journey have been eager to come through his line. The most important thing, though, has been striking back against ALS. “One of the greatest keys to joy is to forget about improving our own lives and start helping people who can’t help themselves.”

“The military taught us, ‘don’t give up the ship,’ ” says Judy Kronk, who served 20 years in the U.S. Navy and is now a fabric and crafts associate/cashier at Store 2618 in Commerce, Mich. And although she’s no longer on active duty, Judy continues to serve: the military, the community, and her customers at Walmart.

Judy has been active in her local American Legion post and carries the flag in Memorial Day parades, but she’s also twice collected signatures from customers and associates on a cardboard U.S. flag to show support for (and boost the morale of ) troops overseas. “We once collected more than 200 signatures in one day,” she says.

Judy is also committed to serving customers: “Serving customers is about listening, giving your all, answering requests, and being very polite and thankful that the customer was there,” she says.

In the military, Judy says, people were sometimes surprised to see a woman on duty, but she never let it hold her back. “Women can do the same job as men,” she says. She brings that same spirit to Walmart, where drive and ambition have allowed her to succeed and advance. Though she admits she’s short (5 feet, 4 inches), Judy says: “I’m small, but I’m mighty.”

Outside PassionSam Walton called quail hunting his “one self-indulgent activity.”

Our newest badge is part of an exhibit at The Walmart Museum.

In most states, November is hunting season for many species of birds and game, including Sam Walton’s favorite, the quail. It’s actually one of the main reasons the Waltons settled in the Bentonville area. From there, Sam could easily access quail in four states: Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. In his book Sam Walton: Made in America, Sam talks about leaving work nearly every day to get some hunting in. As Walmart expanded

and Sam was in his plane more, his crew of bird dogs, including favorite Ol’ Roy, often flew with him. At one point, Sam and his brother Bud even leased ranches in southern Texas for hunting.

Visit WalmartMuseum.com to see a 360-degree view of Sam’s office (pictured above), which has several bird- and hunting-related items, including a stuffed bird mounted on one wall.

My Proudest Moment Receiving a bachelor’s degree from American Public University, thanks to Walmart. I never thought I’d be a college graduate. It doesn’t feel real sometimes.

My Next Goal I ultimately want to be a market human resources manager over a market or two. I want to be able to affect as many people as I can. I really believe in Sam Walton’s philosophies.

We Are Walmart / My Walmart Journey

Why Walmart I don’t think any other company would have taken a chance on me. I was a high school dropout who served in the Army. I didn’t have much work history. I’m so grateful.

Finds, Food, & Fun

New Twists for the HolidaysTurkey is the star of the Thanksgiving meal—roughly 40 percent of Americans would agree. Stuffing (or dressing as it’s called in the South) is a distant second favorite. Since the rest of the menu is up for debate, there’s room for experimentation. Turn the page for suggestions.

The bird isn’t the only star during Thanksgiving. Check out these numbers.

Roughly 23 percent of annual turkey baster sales occur during Thanksgiving week, which makes it the top-selling gadget during that period.

Walmart will sell more than 20,000 gravy boats this holiday season. Combined, they hold a total of 5,000 gallons of gravy.

The average store will sell more than 1,000 roasters during November; about 750 of those are sold Thanksgiving week.

Different Cards for Different FolksRetail gift cards are good only at the specific merchants that sell them.Open loop cards typically display a Visa or MasterCard logo and are used like a credit or debit card. Open loop cards are more versatile if you aren’t sure where the recipient likes to shop.

Registration Means Protection“Cards need to be registered in order for the customer to be protected against lost or stolen cards,” says Janet Goeking, senior manager of regulatory controls at the Home Office. Usually, a registration website or phone number is listed on the back of the card.

There’s a Five-Year RuleThanks to the CARD Act of 2009 (which offers some consumer protection for retail gift cards), gift cards can’t expire for at least five years. Plus, expiration dates must be clearly marked. You can be charged a fee for inactivity, but only after a card hasn’t been used for at least a year.

It’s OK to Sell or Trade CardsSome websites carry cards from a variety of retailers for sale or trade. Some offer cash for your card, or you can trade it for one from another retailer, but you may not be offered the full cash value for your card.

A

My favorite holiday tradition …Baking batch after batch of homemade cinnamon rolls and delivering them to friends. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it.

My guilty pleasure …Coffee ice cream. I can’t control myself! And reality TV.

My readers would be surprised to know …I’m very, very limber.

My advice to home cooks who are aspiring bloggers … Be yourself, share the food you cook for yourself and your family, and find the style that is reflective of you. And exercise more. Food blogging is hazardous to the waistline.

The one cooking technique that was the hardest to master …Baking bread. I’m still trying to master it.

My Christmas wish list includes … Time. Time to unwind, relax, be with the kids and my husband, and be lazy (and maybe sneak in a little reality TV).

My favorite part of being a mom … Absolutely everything.

Definitely some form of roasted beef: either tenderloin or prime rib! Some form of

creamy scalloped potato. Nine-hour mushrooms cooked in butter, garlic, and red wine. Roasted Brussels sprouts with cranberries and balsamic vinegar. I could go on and on.

We used a technique known as quilling to produce this issue’s spark. You can use it to make this decorative place card, with directions courtesy of Hallmark.

Materials: Ivory place cards, ruler or quilling circle sizer ruler, ¼-inch quilling paper (orange, yellow, green), slotted quilling tool, glue pen with precision tip

Directions:1. Tear orange quilling paper to 8-inch length.2. For flower center, insert end

of paper into quilling tool.3. Hold the tool in one hand,

paper in the other, then turn the quilling tool.

4. After paper is coiled around tool, let the coil drop off. Add a drop of glue to the torn end of the paper that’s on the outside of the coil, and glue it to the coil.

5. You’ve made the center coil!

Cooking Disasters Revisited

These associates know that it’s not worth crying over spilled gravy. Here are the holiday dinner mishaps that had their families laughing.

“One year, I had a turkey that was 25 pounds, which is huge. It turns out the turkey was too big for the fryer. I dropped it in the fryer and the wings came untied, and the grease expanded and started coming out of the pot. I almost had a major grease fire. I ended up cutting it up like a chicken and deep-frying it piece by piece. I reassembled it after each piece was fried. It was pretty much a catastrophe, but it was still delicious, and the family enjoyed it.”

“Three years ago, I tried to make a cake with Nutella, but something went wrong in making it. My brother dropped it on the floor, and when it bounced, he said ‘Look, it’s as hard as a baseball!’ My family laughed, but ever since, my cake has turned out much better.”

Erica Vazquez, cash office associate, Store 1216, Carrollton, Texas

Stephanie Mackey, case manager II, claims management, Rogers, Ark.

“I had just finished a batch of homemade gravy to go along with a roast we had prepared for dinner. As I turned around to put the whisk in the sink, I knocked the entire pot off the stove with such force that it splattered gravy on me, both cats, the refrigerator, and even the walls and ceiling. It took us weeks to get it all cleaned up!”

WHEN I MET HIM: I met Mr. Sam in 1991 when I was a recently hired assistant manager trainee for Store 1486 in Farmville, Va. He came

into the store and headed straight for the courtesy desk. Over the PA system, he thanked customers for choosing Walmart and thanked associates for working hard to serve the customers. During his visit, he asked me questions about where I had worked (a grocery chain),

what position I held (front-end manager), and for how long. Then he asked me to send him ideas to make our own front end run

better. I was blown away. I sent a memo to Mr. Sam with my ideas, and he responded with a letter. He said many of my suggestions

would improve our customer service and store operations. I still have the letter. It’s framed in my personal office.

PUTTING IT TO USE: I ask my management team to listen to ideas from at least 10 associates each week. They often gather valuable

feedback on everything from ways to improve sales to improving the customer and associate experience.

SAM WALTON TAUGHT ME: Listen to your associates.

They are your best idea generators.

Should We All Upgrade to 4K TVs?And how to choose among the latest models

T he main diff erence between 4K Ultra HDTV and traditional HDTV is the screen resolu-tion; 4K TVs have the highest pixel count. Pixels are tiny

square-shaped graphic picture elements that are placed in a grid-like format that our eyes use to form a complete image.Images appearing on 4K Ultra HDTV screens are smoother, more realistic and highly detailed because of the high number of pixels per square inch. “More pixels per square inch translates into a better quality image,” says John Billings, Entertainment Department Manager, Store 1762, Seabrook, NH.
