Have you ever been in a car accident? If not, here are some tips: Don’t leave the scene of the accident. Stay there. And do not walk around too much- you may be injured internally and not even know it. Also, do not accept a ride from someone who wants to take you from the scene. They are generally wrong and need to just stay with you at the scene of the accident. On-lookers, do not attempt to

take people from the scene of the accident. Call 911 and then stay with them. Keep them company and try and calm them down. Make them aware help is on its way. In conclusion, always wear your seatbelt, remain calm, never leave the scene and once you are safely away from the damaged vehicle sit down as you may be injured more than you thought.

Message from Michelle:

Alachua County has a lot to offer its residents. Fine schools, country living, easy access to a major highway, decent shopping, all these things and more give our county a reputation for being a good place to live. The same is true with eating in our county. There is any number of places to go to get your fi ll of a dizzying variety of cuisines. Good wholesome country food, fi ne dining fare, any number of distinct ethnic foods, all are just a short hop, skip, or jump away from any where you are in Alachua

County. It’s just a matter of fi nding the gems in the treasure pile. That’s what I hope to help you, our reader, to fi nd that gem in amongst the treasure pile that is dining in Alachua County. I give you the fi rst installment of Belly Up.The Fatman’s favorite: Italian American Cuisine. I will admit- I have a weakness for Italian American fare. After all, I was brought up on it. This particular cuisine is responsible for me being the Fatman. Our county has a lot to offer in the way of Italian cuisine, there are corporate franchise affairs, hole-in-the-wall pizza joints, and family restaurants. One place in particular shines the brightest and has earned a special place in the heart of the Fatman. Pomodoro Café, located in North West Gainesville (9200 NW 39TH AVE), is a family restaurant offering a fi ne range of authentic Italian cuisine.

The atmosphere: There is one thing that can turn a fi nely prepared meal in to a “meh” experience. The atmosphere of the dining room can be off. Too dark and you can’t see what you’re eating. Music blaring so loud that you can’t hear your dining partner talk, let alone what dish the waitress is describing. Many elements contribute to a diner’s experience with a meal. Atmosphere is one. The atmosphere at Pomodoro Cafe doesn’t detract from the dining experience at all. Matter of fact, it greatly enhances your dining experience. The lighting levels are good enough that you can tell that what is on your plate is what you ordered. The music is appropriate to the cuisine at hand and is at a decibel level where you can hear yourself think and what your waitress is describing. The musical selection is, in particular, nostalgic Italian American favorites. Everything from old Italian love songs and traditional

music to crooners such as Dean Martin and the Chairman of the Board himself, Frank Sinatra. There are beautiful fresco style paintings of a Mediterranean-style village on the walls as well as an arched ceiling with a sunny sky and some wispy clouds painted on it. A nicely planned layout with comfortable seating is the norm at Pomodoro Cafe. This is especially important for the “large and in charge” crowd such as the Fatman himself! The menu: The menu is diverse with offerings for every palate and price range. There are lots of appetizers ranging from fried calamari, to traditional antipasto. The dinner menu is excellent with all your favorite Italian staples such as pasta with a variety of sauces, pizzas, hot and cold subs, classic dishes such as Veal Marsala, and chef’s specials of the day that puts one’s juices fl owing. Pomodoro Cafe offers a decent wine list for a local place and has a selection that compliments various dishes

and palates. I prefer a strong red Chianti with most of my Italian meals and Pomodoro’s doesn’t disappoint, much to the dismay of my wife who describes my favorite type of wine as “Italian feet juice”- she prefers light sweet wines. The desert menu is great with all your favorites including cheese cake, cannoli, tiramisu, and even Italian wedding cake. The Fatman’s visit: I went to Pomodoro Cafe hungry. I knew that the owner, Paulie as I call him, would be sure to have his crew satisfy the Fatman’s appetite for good food at a decent price. The wait staff is very friendly yet still professional. Within a few moments, I was seated and my drink order was taken. Very soon after, my wine arrived along with a loaf of hot freshly baked bread and some dipping sauce to whet my appetite. The bread is a real treat, with garlic and sun dried tomato baked in. My meal order consisted of the Cioppino as an appetizer, the grilled rib-eye steak as a main

and for dessert an old Sicilian favorite: the cannoli. After a few minutes of enjoyment with hot bread and a dipping sauce of balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil, my appetizer arrived. Cioppino is a stew like concoction of Salmon, clams, mussels, scallops, and shrimp that is sautéed in white wine sauce then lobster broth and marinara are added with fresh garlic slices. This dish is, in a word, orgasmic. The shellfi sh is the best quality and cooked to perfection. The broth is slightly spicy and has the distinct fl avor of the sea and its yummy inhabitants. Within moments of fi nishing my cioppino, my main course arrived. I had ordered the grilled rib-eye with roasted potatoes. This dish is an Italian American favorite. The meat is grade-A beef cut to perfection with just the right amount of marbled fat within the fl esh to make the steak juicy and fl avorful. Grilled to a perfect medium rare by the cook and

smothered in a concoction of fresh red bell peppers, onions, garlic and mushrooms, sautéed in a stock with wine, butter and tomato sauce. If you are like me, an avid lover of all things meaty delicious, and unhealthy, you will love this dish. The potatoes were roasted in olive oil and spices and added a nice earthy touch to the dish. Every great meal deserves a great fi nish. This one is no exception and Paulie’s crew did not disappoint. I’m a big fan of desserts. My waist line will attest to that. I chose an old Sicilian favorite: The humble and ever-so delicious cannoli. No dessert stands alone and there is always a beverage that compliments and enhances the experience of dessert. This time the beverage is coffee. The cannolis here are about the best you can get this side of Brooklyn. The sweet creamy mascarpone inside a crunchy pastry tube baked to

perfection is an epic conclusion to a very good meal. The only detraction was my waitress, bless her heart; she accidently dumped my coffee while serving it. No worries though as the mess was promptly cleaned up and another piping hot cup was brought my way. Paulie was most apologetic and offered to “comp” me the dessert. The score board: 0 - 5 gemsAtmosphere: 4 gemsFood: 4.5 gemsPrice: 3.5 gemsService: 4 gemsOverall score: 4 gemsPomodoro Cafe is a True gem in our treasure pile. I highly recommend it to you the reader as the place in Alachua County to go for great family dining with an Italian theme. Tell our friend Paulie that the Fatman sent you. Until next issue: Ciao- and don’t forget to Belly Up!

Boys and Girls Club- Laura JavidiWhat role does the Club play in the community? In these tough times, the Club is truly supporting the entire family. While parents are worried about making ends meet and keeping their jobs, they can still rely on the Club to ensure their children are in a safe environment and not left alone at home. As you can imagine, the Club has been very busy. We serve hundreds of children each and every day and some 4,000 kids each year. Can you imagine what all those families would do if they did not have such a place to take their kids? At times like this, the Boys & Girls Club is needed more than ever. What is the Club’s impact on kids, families and communities? Our kids have a fun place to go every day after school. When they are at the Club, it doesn’t matter if their parents have a job or not. It doesn’t

matter if they don’t have a computer. It doesn’t matter if they are not wearing designer clothes. All that matters is there are professional staff who care about them and provide programs that are fun and build good character along the way. If you are a parent struggling to pay the gas bill or buy groceries, there is one thing you can count on: that your child is being well taken care of at the Club. Our community is fortunate to have an organization such as this - one providing quality programs to every child regardless of their fi nancial background. The four Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County units are community-based organizations that provide young people with fun, safe, and constructive environments after school and during the summer. As described below, the Club addresses multiple of the Preferred Program Components outlined in the guidance document for Children and Families including After

School, Summer and Mentoring Activities, Prevention and Intervention programs, Education & Literacy programs, and Parenting sessions through our GPTTO Gang prevention program. The Club partners with many local agencies to implement the programs listed above. Among them are several local law enforcement agencies, including the teen court and Probation Department. Many of our youth visit and serve at teen court as part of FAME and GPTTO programs and several of our teens are referred by the Probation offi cers. The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) and Alachua County Sherriff’s Offi ce (ASO) offi cers visit schools and program locations, and target neighborhoods on a regular basis to increase positive interaction with youth. The offi cers make ongoing referrals to our programs. The School Board of Alachua County provides referrals to the Project Learn, FAME and GPTTO programs

VOLUNTEERING & FUNDRAISINGPREVIEW FOR OCTOBER:Sebastian Ferrero Foundation to Host 2nd Annual Fundraiser, Noche de Gala

--Special live performances by Broadway ‘Phantom of the Opera’ Sensation, Ted Keegan, UF’s P.K. Younge D.R.S.’s Award Winning Vocal Ensemble, Paso Fino Horse Shows, Exquisite Dining, Silent Auction and much more!

Noche de Gala 2009 promises to be an elegant and fun-fi lled evening benefi ting the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation. The charitable event is scheduled for October 3, from 7 p.m. to midnight, at the spectacular 642-acre Besilu Collection in Micanopy, generously hosted by owners Benjamin and Silvia Leon, Jr. The theme is a Venetian masquerade ball and will feature extravagant live performances by Italian Opera singers along with Broadway sensation, Ted Keegan, who has played the lead role in the Broadway production, “The Phantom of the Opera”, a live

band and dancers, Paso Fino champions horse shows, cigar rolling and exquisite dining. The event, which is black tie with masks encouraged, will also feature a silent auction and exquisite dining by Dean Cacciatore. Keith Watson of Keith Watson Productions is the event producer and has been in charge of all preparations. Last year’s inaugural, sold-out Noche de Gala event generated close to $1 million in sponsorships, ticket sales, silent auction, pledges, in-kind donations, and the founders, Horst and Luisa Ferrero’s dollar for dollar match moving the Foundation a major step closer to reaching its mission: to advocate and fundraise for a state-of-the-art, full-service, children’s hospital in Gainesville, Florida while promoting excellence in patient safety and insuring that all families are treated with compassion, courtesy and dignity.

“To maximize the impact of all contributions raised through this year’s Gala, Luisa

and I have decided to continue our match program, matching dollar for dollar, up to $1 million dollars,” said Founder Horst Ferrero. “The match program is allowing us to dedicate 100% of every dollar donated to support the Foundation’s mission. Our match dollars are paying for the fundraising efforts, such as Noche de Gala, patient safety initiatives, educational programs and all administrative expenses.” The foundation expects to have at least 1,000 guests at this year’s event. For sponsorships, ticket sales and more information, visit www.NocheDeGala.org About the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation The Sebastian Ferrero Foundation was created by Horst and Luisa Ferrero in November 2007 to honor the memory of their happy and healthy three-year-old son, Sebastian, who died in October 2007 as a result of a series of preventable medical errors in Gainesville, Florida. The mission of the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation is to advocate and fundraise for a state-of-the-art, full service children’s hospital in Gainesville, Florida while promoting excellence in patient safety and insuring that all families are treated with

compassion, courtesy and dignity. In 2008, the University of Florida Center for Leadership and Service awarded the Foundation as the “Most Outstanding Community Agency.” The Foundation also received the Institute of Safe Medication Practices’ national “Cheers Award”, in recognition of the Foundation having set a superlative standard of excellence in the prevention of medication errors and adverse drug events. Before you go to donate blood you need to make sure you have not consumed any alcohol, medications, or drugs. You need to get plenty of sleep and make sure not to eat any fatty foods the day before giving blood. This means sticking to eating low fat foods and iron-rich foods before you donate. Make sure to eat a good breakfast so your blood sugar is up. When you go, be sure to bring your ID and a list of any medications you are currently taking, a list of places you have visited outside the United States, and a friend. If your hands or feet are

cold, just ask for a blanket as this could be a sign of a drop in blood pressure. After you donate make sure you eat the snack you are offered to help bring your sugar back up. Take 15 minutes to rest after you donate- you shouldn’t rush right out as you’ve donated blood your body was using just a few minutes before. Make your next meal high in protein such as beef or chicken. Do not do any heavy lifting for the rest of the day; give yourself 16 hours or so to properly heal. Do not exercise for the rest of the day, your body has done enough- let it rest!

Jay’s Hands is a project designed by Do Art, LLC to support the Child Advocacy Center and in honor of the late Dr. Jay Herrington. Dr. Herrington was a founding member of the board of the Child Advocacy Center and was an avid supporter of this nonprofi t organization, dedicated to serving the Alachua County victims of child abuse victims. Jay’s Hand supporters are making ceramic art ornament pieces- by rolling and molding clay, painting the pieces, and then stringing them together to create a beautiful ornament. The ornaments will be hung all around the Gainesville community with messages

about child abuse. The project’s purpose is to bring awareness of the reality of child abuse and also the important work that the Child Advocacy Center performs daily. All profi ts raised from this project go directly to the Child Advocacy Center. Everyone in the community is invited to participate every Tuesday and Thursday (noon – 7p.m.) at Do Art- located in Thornebrook Village.

SPORTS Nate Trenteseaux is passionate about health, fi tness and athleticism. He is a Christian who wants to use his passion for health and fi tness to help others (he helps all people regardless of their religious beliefs). Nate has a Level 1 Youth Fitness Specialist certifi cation through the International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA) and plans on opening a fi tness-based business in the near future. Nate trains people out of his private garage gym to help them reach their strength, fi tness, health and fat loss goals. He has read hundreds of articles, books and studies on health and fi tness and has more than 15 years of “in the

trenches” experience through trial and error ranging from weight training, Olympic lifting, strength and conditioning, fat loss training and more. He enjoys spending his time helping others on various fi tness forums and through his blog.http://christianathlete.blogspot.com/ Nate has some fat loss basics to share this month.Calories: You need to create a caloric defi cit. There are no two ways about it. You must burn more than you consume. The most effective way to create that defi cit is to use a combination of diet and exercise.Nutrition: Your diet should consist of lean proteins, vegetables,

fruits and healthy fats from olive oil, nuts and fatty fi sh (think salmon). Keep starches and refi ned carbs to a minimum. Keep your fl uid intake high (water only), and try to eat at least 4-5 small meals per day. This will help maintain blood sugar levels and keep you from blowing your diet.Exercise: Interval training and metabolic resistance training will provide the most bang-for-your buck. Steady-state aerobic training just doesn’t burn enough calories for your goals right now, and a body part training split will be less effective than total body training for fat loss. Try to exercise at least six days

per week - three days of interval-based cardio and three days of resistance training.Supplements: There is almost nothing that will make a difference. Sorry. Certain supplements can boost metabolism, or increase your energy somewhat and these may be useful. But in terms of real world “pounds of fat lost,” I have yet to see anything that really made a difference. A multivitamin and a fi sh oil supplement are vital though - but more for your overall health. A protein shake or post-workout shake can be useful for convenience but are nothing more than high-quality food.

It is very important to make sure you stay hydrated during sports this month. There are many easy steps to take be sure you remain hydrated and healthy during the hot Florida sports season. The main thing you can do is drink 8 to 10 glasses of water or Gatorade through the day. You want to drink before, during, and after you workout or play sports. You should drink every 20 minutes or so during sports and exercise. Gatorade is a good sports drink to rehydrate and give you essential vitamins that need to be replaced in your body as you sweat. Another way to stay hydrated is to suck on a Popsicle or two from time to time. Stay away from coffee, colas and other caffeine drinks as they increase the amount you urinate and will make you dehydrate even faster. Try to avoid a high protein diet. Also, be sure to avoid alcohol

including beer and wine when you know you will be out the next day playing sports or exercise. These, as well as caffeine, increase dehydration. Be sure to wear one layer of lightweight light colored clothing when exercising and playing sports. Do not ever exercise in a rubber suit. Signs of mild dehydration include: Thirst, dry skin, Loss of appetite, skin fl ushing, dark colored urine, fatigue/weakness, dry mouth, chills and head rushes. The signs of severe dehydration can include: increased heart rate, respiration, body temperature, decreased sweating, urination, extreme fatigue, muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, vomiting, tingling of the limbs, confusion, chest and abdominal pain, and unconsciousness. If you have or see a friend with any of these symptoms call 911 immediately.

materialized on the Hollywood set of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Instantly smitten by the glitz and glamour of show biz, the two are ushered onto the silver screen to play (who else?) themselves. You won’t want to miss this hilarious comedy! Shakespeare in Hollywood opens Friday, September 4th and runs through Sunday, September 20th, with performances Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8:00 pm, Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $16 and may be purchased in advance at The Book Gallery West in the Millhopper Shopping Center adjacent to the theater, or at the theater one hour prior to each performance. There will be a special preview performance

on September 3rd at 8:00 p.m. and tickets for this showing are $5. September 2009 All Around Alachua Issue 1, Vol. 1, Page 20Before a Hurricane With Hurricane season not yet over, it is important to keep in mind hurricane preparedness and safety. Hurricanes are generally classifi ed into fi ve categories.Category 1 -- Winds 74-95 mph Category 2 -- Winds 96-110 mph Category 3 -- Winds 111-130 mph Category 4 -- Winds 131-155 mph Category 5 -- Winds greater than 155 mph Before a storm is coming it’s a good idea to have your home inspected for local building code compliance. A lot of the roofs hit by hurricanes were destroyed because they were not constructed according to newer building codes. Also, make a record of your personal property. Take pictures of, or videotape your belongings. Send these fi les via email to family or friends and keep the hard copies in a safety deposit box or take them with you.Understand the difference between the two terms used by weather forecasters. A hurricane watch means a hurricane is possible within 36 hours, whereas a hurricane

warning means that a hurricane is expected within 24 hours. If advised to evacuate, do so immediately. Stay tuned into local radio or television weather forecasts. If you need to, buy a NOAA weather radio. You should learn how to shut off your household utilities. You should know where your gas pilots are located and how your heating/ air-conditioning system works. Talk with your whole family about hurricanes. Plan a safe place to meet your family just in case you are somehow separated from each other in a disaster. It’s also a good idea to pick an out-of-state contact for everyone to call and report they are okay. Learn your local evacuation routes before a storm. Figure out where you would go and how you would get there if you and your family had to leave. Prepare to make it on your own for at least three days if you do not need to evacuate. Put together a disaster supplies kit. You should have a battery-powered radio, blankets, fl ashlights, a fi rst-aid kit, extra batteries, spare clothing, and non perishable food and water (a gallon per person, per day).

Emergency NumbersIf there is a true emergency always call 911. They will direct the appropriate department to you.
