The 10.5 tonne bell sounds out every 15 minutes and it is reportedly the loudest clock bell in the country, with its strike being heard up to seven miles away! In 2015 Nottingham City Council offered the loan of Little John to replace London’s Big Ben if it was ever to fall silent.

Indeed, concerns continue to grow for those who choose to draw on their pension savings without taking advice. Drawdown demands

And while the majority are taking a sensible approach, the minority are withdrawing pension funds at rates that could see this money run out in a decade or less. Fencing on Bateman Road boundary

You may remember that the trees along the boundary of Bateman Road, towards the railway embankment, were cut down in error by Street Wise. There is a requirement that Meadow Park has a defined boundary, so we decided to erect a fence. The cost

of the fence is very modest and has been met out of our funds and your donations. We are always very grateful to our members and others who either contribute by joining Friends of Meadow Park or contribute via the boxes in village shops. The fence looks really good and we attacked the Russia Vine which was growing in the area with enthusiasm! It will take a lot of

effort to keep this pernicious shrub in check.

Path reinstatement in SE Corner of Gibson Field

You may have noticed how wet and churned up the ground is in the top south-east corner of Gibson Field (near the railway embankment). Over the last few months the pathway has virtually disappeared. Co-incidentally there is a sycamore tree in St Mary’s church yard that is pushing a wall down and needs removing before it does any real damage (pictured far right). The aim is to shred the tree and use the chippings to re-create the path in the SE corner of Gibson Field and make it more user friendly. Tree Smart, a local firm, will undertake this task, taking the chippings to the Bateman Road boundary to be used to re-instate the original path.

Arboretum

The wet soil in the arboretum is having an adverse effect upon some of the trees. The larch and sweet chestnut look particularly

sorry for themselves and could develop problems in April. Grass cutting in the arboretum area is a very difficult and time consuming task and the committee have decided to investigate the possibility of doing this in a less mechanised way – either with a smaller mower or even by hand. Also mowing the arboretum area every other year would help small invertebrates, flowers etc…

We are delighted to report that a petrol driven strimmer has been donated.

Play Field

We plan to create a limestone bank in the headland area of Play Field. Limestone chippings removed in the path renovation and some extra chippings brought in (several tons) will be piled up to create a quarry floor type of habitat. The position is ideal as it will be sheltered from the wind and catches the sun very well. Limestone loving plants like kidney vetch, wild strawberry, cinque foil, birds foot trefoil and marjoram

A new bench was donated to Play Field and has been cemented in.

We plan to improve the drainage in the bottom corner of Play Field as it is constantly muddy.

Brambles growing

The north boundary of the park is overgrown with brambles. The brambles are now so thick volunteers cannot cut them back effectively so RBC or ELPC will be asked to deal with them.

Environment Agency

Recent flooding in the village revealed the problem of sewage disposal as the water across Gotham Road, the children’s playground and Meadow Park was contaminated. If you feel strongly about this issue (as we do) then please contact the Environment Agency when there is flooding in the Gotham Road. Apparently one person complaining counts for little and the agency needs to quantify the problem with the help of numbers of individuals making a

complaint. Their number is: 03708 506 506

Work done on activity mornings

• The willow structure has been pruned to provide a tunnel like structure

• The new pathways were damaged in some areas as a result of the recent flooding. These have now been repaired.

• More work is to be undertaken on the Russian Vine on the Bateman road boundary

• There will be no hedge laying this year – there has been quite a lot of maintenance as a result of the flooding, so we have had to prioritise.

• The branches overhanging

pathways that are cut back will be stacked near Forest School log circle for the children to use in their den making activities.

To find out more about the Friends of Meadow Park visit

www.east-leake.co.uk and look under ‘organisations’. Pick up an application form from Mel’s shop or the parish Office. We also have a Facebook page. Membership per year costs £3 for an individual or £5 for a household.

The manufacturing firm behind a Nottinghamshire quarry has joined the fight to save a rare butterfly which was “almost extinct” in the county.

Experts predict the Grizzled Skippers numbers have more than halved in the last 40 years, with Nottinghamshire being one of the areas that has seen a big decline.

Now, East Leake based British Gypsum has teamed up with the Nottinghamshire Biodiversity Action Group to support their work in helping the species.

The company has donated 20 tonnes of railway ballast to create a butterfly habitat near Granby in South Nottinghamshire. This is part of the Grizzled Skipper Project, which has been running since 2012.

It has also created two butterfly banks close to its own head office near Bunny Woods, East Leake. They have been planted with

strawberry and cinquefoil plans, which the butterflies feed on at the caterpillar stage.

British Gypsum’s senior estates and minerals planner, Jen Saunders, said: “We had an opportunity to improve an area of our site that would be suitable for the rare Grizzled Skipper butterfly.

“Although the butterfly banks are still in their infancy, we are really pleased to see the planting becoming established.

“We hope it will attract Grizzled Skippers to the area and encourage them to lay their eggs and larvae here.

“Grizzled Skippers have been spotted just 3km to the west on the Great Central Railway line at East Leake.”

Wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation reported in 2018 that Grizzled Skipper numbers

nationally were at their lowest level on record.

The butterflies used to live on bare, open ground near railway lines, but they began disappearing when many branch lines closed and the routes became overgrown.

The species is particular about where it lays its eggs and prefers bare ground close to where the caterpillars’ food grows.

Thanks to the Grizzled Skipper Project in Nottinghamshire there appear to be signs the work taking place is having a positive effect on conservation, according to the charity.

Chris Jackson, biodiversity officer at the biodiversity action group, added: “We are delighted that locally-based companies like British

Gypsum are showing support for Nottinghamshire’s biodiversity through initiatives such as the Grizzled Skipper Project and we look forward to working more closely with them in the future.”

The Grizzled Skipper Project manages more than 20 sites in south Nottinghamshire which are known to support the butterfly, had sightings in recent years, or are areas of potentially suitable habitat near known sites.

British Gypsum’s head office is near East Leake, the company extracts the mineral gypsum from Bantycock Quarry near Newark and in August last year they also announced that they would help to create a wildflower meadow in Bunny Woods.

Year 6 pupils from Gotham Primary School have been on a unique school trip – they have visited an interactive centre in Leicester to help them learn a variety of life skills from internet safety to fire risks in the home.

Thanks to sponsorship from local organisations including British Gypsum (whose head office is at nearby East Leake), the pupils visited the ‘Warning Zone’. Over a full day the pupils learned about fire risk in the home, knife crime, electricity and building sites, alcohol, personal safety, risk around water, arson and criminal damage, road safety and risk around railways.

The session also taught them about internet safety including online grooming, phishing, cyber bullying, sharing Images, internet terms, and protecting personal information.

The Warning Zone’s mission is to ‘reduce the amount of accidental injury and deaths in young people and to also reduce the number of children entering the Criminal Justice System’.

Gotham Primary School governor Andy Howard said: “This was an incredibly worthwhile day away from the classroom. The Warning Zone engages with pupils at a key transition in their life – when they are on the verge of becoming adolescents and young adults.

“The aim then is to teach them vital messages when they are younger so that they can make more informed decisions about risks and consequences both on and off-line and understand the age of criminal responsibility in this country which is 10. We thank our sponsors for enabling the trip to happen.”

Martin Laing from British Gypsum added: “We were delighted to be able to support Gotham Primary School pupils on this trip. Safety is a core value of our organisation, so when we heard about the agenda of the visit to Warning Zone, encouraging young people to consider many aspects of their personal safety, we immediately decided to provide support.”

The East Leake Parish Council are looking for a Community Road Safety Coordinator:

Concerned about speeding in the village? We are currently looking to recruit a volunteer Community Road Safety Local Coordinator to help get some Community Road Safety sessions up and running again. The purpose of the role is to co-ordinate Community Road Safety (CRS) sessions in conjunction with Nottinghamshire Police and in accordance with the guidelines issued by Notts Police. Historically we have managed to run approximately 10 sessions per year, but more would obviously be welcomed.

Duties: • Complete the CRS training provided by Notts Police (one-off).

• Maintain the list of CRS volunteers e.g. ensure they have completed the training, contact details, availability etc. Other community organisations will assist with recruitment of volunteers. Maintain

a contacts list/WhatsApp group etc. as an easy way to communicate with the group as a whole.

• Work with Notts Police to identify suitable sites in the local area for CRS sessions. Mark these clearly on a map to be retained with the documentation. Conduct a health and safety risk assessment of each site to ensure safety of all concerned.

• Liaise with Notts Police over availability of the CRS equipment

and book the equipment using the form provided. Arrange for transportation to the identified storage area and safe storage.

• Liaise with the volunteers over suitable dates, times and locations for CRS sessions and confirm them. Typically, this will be over a two-week period with 2 to 3 sessions per week but this is variable according to the availability of volunteers.

• Notify the Notts Police Force

Control Room on 101 of the planned sessions including dates, times and locations so that they are aware of the activity. Also, confirm this with the Beat Manager.

• Either transport, or arrange for transportation, of the CRS equipment to the identified locations or the CRS sessions.

• Set up the equipment with the help of volunteers and conduct a further health and safety risk assessment using the documentation provided.

• Taking part in the CRS session is optional. At the end of the CRS session, collect the documentation and dismantle the equipment with the help of volunteers, returning it to the storage location. Ensure all equipment is charged and put away correctly. When all CRS sessions are completed, liaise with Notts Police over the return of the CRS equipment and documentation.

Please contact the Parish Clerk on [email protected] if you are interested.

It was Valentine's Day that the story of Torvill and Dean truly turned into something special, a fairytale on ice in Sarajevo. WENDY COOPER recalls events leading up to the 4.28 seconds when the city of Nottingham and the nation fell in love with the dynamic duo in February 1984 and what happened next.

They said it could never happen. But then it did.

On the day Cupids arrow traditionally launches countless romantic encounters, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean hit the bullseye with ice skating judges and charmed a British audience who have been enchanted by the

Nottingham pair ever since.

For the digital generation with a choice of multi-channel media networks to satisfy their seemingly perpetual viewing appetite, it is difficult to convey the excitement generated by this young couple's performance at the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo almost 40 years ago.

Holding off challenges from Japan and East Germany, staging such a prestigious event was a major coup for what was then Yugolsavia's capital, heralding a financial boom in tourism for the city until the devastation of the Bosnia War laid waste much of its historic architecture and slaughtered thousands of its indigenous population.

There had been an inauspicious start to the tournament, too, when the Olympic flag was hoisted upside down at the opening ceremony but that did not dampen the spirits of competitors or spectators, especially the huge

television audience that awaited back home in eager anticipation of Torvill and Dean's appearance in the ice dancing finale.

No that the pair were exactly unknowns. Far from it.

They had already won gold medals at both the European and World Championships and since 1978, had never been beaten in the British Figure Skating Championships which were held annually on their 'own manor', the Nottingham Ice Stadium, today the Ice Arena or National Ice Centre which can be accessed by Bolero Square. More later on Maurice Ravel's musical composition.

In fact, it was at the old rink that Torvill was first bitten then utterly smitten by the ice skating bug. Born in Clifton, she attended Clifton Hall Girls' Grammar School, situated in Clifton Village...

12 NEWSFor great value advertising email [email protected]

A local group of ‘lifelong learners’ from the U3A (University of the Third Age) has enjoyed a first-hand look at how gypsum rock is transformed into an important construction material, plasterboard.

The Soar Valley U3A Science and Technology group visited British Gypsum’s East Leake site near Loughborough, one of the largest gypsum processing sites in the world. The group had already visited the gypsum mine – Marblaegis Mine. This time the group moved on to the next part of the manufacturing process at the East Leake plant.

During the tour the group of 11 U3A members were given a detailed explanation of how the rock is

ground to a powder and then processed into bagged plaster, plasterboard or ceiling tiles. The site produces enough materials for 70,000 new homes a year.

Alison Lloyd, one of the U3A visitors commented: “The visit was fascinating but there was almost too much to take in! Having visited the mine, it was great to see how the mined rock is then changed into very important everyday products.

“And the scale was extremely impressive. In one area we watched the processed gypsum powder pouring like sludge onto an eight-mile long continuous sheet of paper which stretches 350 metres through the vast length of the building. Here we saw the paper being heated, treated and cut, until the sheets of plasterboard were nestled into the loading bay awaiting collection.

“The process only takes five hours from rock arriving to finished plaster board being loaded onto a lorry!”

U3A members fascinated by plaster production experience Grab your clubs and get involved

14 LOCAL BUSINESS The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com

Super slimmers from East Leake and Gotham have been supporting local young people who are moving on from being in care to independent living.

Following the Christmas festivities, members have taken part in a food amnesty, collecting festive treats alongside other food items and gift wrapped toiletries.

Meg Kozian, the local Slimming World consultant, said: “This is the 3rd year we have given our support to vulnerable young people from the Rushcliffe area.

“They are only provided with basic provisions when they start living independently and therefore it’s a pleasure to be able to give them some treats as they set off on their adult journey.

“The amnesty encourages my members to refocus on their weight loss dreams whilst helping to provide some treats that would not otherwise be available.

“I have been blown away by my members generosity. I am really proud and grateful to everyone who has donated. These kind of donations have meant that it has helped group members to lose almost 50 stone in January - how incredible is that!”

It is never too late to join any of your amazing local groups in either East Leake, Gotham and even Clifton.

For the latest joining offers and to find out more, please contact Meg, Sacha, Marion or Yvonne. Details can be found on the Slimming World advert on the front page of this East Leake Local News.

Homeowners looking to spruce up abodes in the new year can look to these three tips from home improvement experts at Stormclad.

Managing director, John Evans at home improvement company Stormclad, said: “There’s never been a better time to make those necessary home improvements than at the start of a brand new year. Our specialists at Stormclad have compiled a list of three easy tips to spruce up your property.”

1. New doors and windows

Brand-new doors and windows can really give homes a new lease of life and there are a range of styles on the market to give homes a unique

and enhanced look, there are so many door options and Stormclad has a range of flexible finance options for payment.

2. Conservatory refurbishment

As a prime living space that can be enjoyed all year round, conservatories are always worth investing in. As many older styles of conservatories don’t benefit from modern materials and construction techniques, they suffer problems with temperature control, leaking gutters and roofs and damp. Simple, economical options such as - window replacement, high-performance glass, door and roof replacement.

3. Maximise space

Making the most of space on your property is easy – a veranda can extend your property and allow you to make the most of outside space. All Stormclad verandas come with a 10-year guarantee and have a life expectancy of up to 25 years.

Three easy tips for sprucing up your home for the new year

My name is Amanda Harris and I am a Will Writer based in West Bridgford. I am a member of the Society of Will Writers and have been producing Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Funeral plans for the past 9 years. I love my job and I am committed to ensuring that my clients receive the services that they need.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows an appointed person (Attorney) to act on your behalf and make decisions if you are unable to.

Q - “I don’t need an LPA because my next of kin can make important decisions on my behalf”

A - Not true. No-one can act on your behalf or make decisions on your behalf if they have not been legally authorised to do so.

Q - “My Will has appointed executors, so they’ll be able to make decisions on my behalf.”

A - Not true. A Will is entirely separate to an LPA. Executors appointed in a Will only have the power or authority to distribute your estate as requested and in line with your Will, on death. They have no authority to make decisions on your behalf during your lifetime.

Q - “I don’t need an LPA until I become elderly and of ill health”

A - Not true. An LPA can be made by anyone over the age or 18 who

has full mental capacity. Someone may lose capacity instantly following an accident and none of us know what the future holds.

Q - “Getting an LPA is expensive”

A - The cost of registering an LPA yourself is £82 per document. My fees are £500 per pair of LPA’s. In comparison, if you fail to make an LPA and lose capacity, your family will be left with no other option but to apply for a Deputyship Order, which will cost significantly more.

Q - “We have joint bank accounts so we don’t need LPA’s”

A - Not true. If one partner loses mental capacity then by law the bank has to freeze the joint account until they receive a valid LPA or deputyship order. This can be stressful and costly for the family.

If you are interested in making a Lasting Power of Attorney for you or a loved on you can find more information on my website www.alhlegal-willwriters.co.uk or you can drop me an email on [email protected] or ring me on 07816 921196 and I would be happy to help you.

Lasting Powers of Attorney… Myth Busting Funding set to benefit NottsVoluntary and community groups across Nottinghamshire can now apply for the latest round of grants as part of the County Council scheme to support grassroots projects. The Local Improvement Scheme is helping local communities to be more vibrant and sustainable by providing grants to local organisations which seek to make a difference in the local community and contribute towards making Nottinghamshire a great place to live, work and visit.Groups can now apply for capital funding of up to £30,000 at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/lis. The closing date for this round of funding is 28 February 2020 with £1.4m available. The funding can be provided for physical things like signs, equipment or buildings, but not running costs. Applicants will need to demonstrate that their projects can deliver tangible, long term benefits to the community. Since the scheme was launched in 2017/2018, the Local Improvement Scheme is making a real difference in our communities. In fact, 202 projects have so far benefitted from more than £2m worth of capital funding. For more information and to find out about eligibility visit: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/lis

February should be a mixture of rain, frosts and milder spells. Soil preparation will pay dividends and sowing seeds will give you and the family a positive view of early growth.

Beds and Borders Spring bulbs such as crocus, winter aconite and snowdrops should be emerging in protected areas of the garden. The pink propeller blooms of cyclamen corms will also be creating a delightful warm glow to areas that are sheltered from the cold. They like rich well drained soil and will easily self-seed if the conditions are just right.

Millions of gardeners have realised that buying almost fully grown plantlets in early summer ready to plant out in patio pots, hanging baskets and garden borders is not the cheapest way of buying plant material. The trend nowadays is to buy seedlings or plug plants early in the new year and grow these plants in pots indoors until they are ready to plant out in the garden.

Lawncare Don't walk on the grass while it is frozen or frosted. Crushing the frozen blades of grass results in a burn that turns brown and the footsteps will be visible for weeks. In mild spells why not cut the grass to keep the lawn looking trim.

Your lawn care plans for 2020 After the winter, moss is prevalent on many lawns. Now is a great time to treat with proprietary lawn feeds that include a moss control or if all that sounds daunting call Greener Gardens, we complete a Free no obligation survey. We work with you, understanding your aspirations to identify work that can be completed to create the lawn you desire.

It’s not too early to think about your lawncare plans for the year, but if nothing else get the mower blade sharpened.

Grow your own If weather conditions don’t allow you to get outdoors, then use the time wisely to draw up your plans

for the year, and order or buy seeds ready to sow when they do.

Many gardening books tell you to sow seeds of parsnip in February because they take a long time to germinate.

Buy your favourite varieties of seed potato from your local garden centre before they sell out. Set them out in a single layer at the bottom of a seed tray and keep them somewhere in good light that is cool and frost-free.

Patio Tubs & Baskets Keep dead-heading winter pansies and feed occasionally with a liquid All Purpose Plant Food when the weather is mild.

Paths and Drives Clean up any green mould growth

on the patio slabs, brickwork or walls with one simple treatment with Patio Magic! Just water or spray on during a dry spell – the active ingredient works for several months to give great control of mould, lichen and algae.

Patio Magic! is quick and easy to use without the need for hard work. Just dilute the concentrate in a watering can and thoroughly wet the affected surface, then simply leave it to dry. If that sounds hard work Greener Gardens can do it for you.

Garden Diary is written by John Draper of Greener Gardens, your local independent BASIS Lawn specialist. For help with all aspects of your lawn call 0115 837 8439 or visit www.greenergardens.co.uk.

Lots to talk about at Prograss...At the time of writing this we have just started up again after our Christmas and are doing the important Winter lawn treatments which is all about applying fertiliser products that deal with any moss that has spored and diseases that have appeared over this period in the damp, wet, mild conditions. These products also supply the nutrients required to condition the soil at this time of the year. It is essential to get the lawn prepared and in shape so that we can then apply the nice lively fertilisers in the Spring that are required to get the lawn looking its best for 2020. Prograss February update Glamping in BunnyA set of luxury camping pods have been earmarked for a woodland area in a Nottinghamshire village. Plans have been recently been revealed to build five rentable ‘glamping’ pods and one rentable log cabin on land at the junction of Gotham Lane and Bunny Hill, in Bunny. Planning documents have been submitted to change the use of what has been described as “unmanaged woodland with many dead and overcrowded trees”.Planning documents submitted to Rushcliffe Borough Council state: “The aim is to provide high-end holiday accommodation aimed at couples and families looking for back to nature woodland breaks. The proposed holiday destination will integrate perfectly with the rural wooded location, it boasts excellent road links to Nottingham, the Vale of Belvoir, Rushcliffe Park and a wealth of local facilities and attractions.”The glamping pods are expected to be 6 metres by 3 metres and would cater for two guests per night. The log cabin, meanwhile, is likely to be 15.5 metres by 6.4 metres.A new entrance to the woodland site is expected to be created.

Outdoor entertaining and alfresco living are becoming a quintessential part of our modern lifestyles as more of us experience outdoor eating on our holidays and want to be able to do it at home.

Letting the outdoors in and the indoors out, expands the space available to us. This way of living is now so common place that it has been given a descriptive name “transterior”.

We may not have the hot summers that Spain or Greece have, but we all appreciate getting outside and feeling the sun on our faces. The missing weather ingredients can be easily added using a host of available items such as fire pits, infra red heating, heated seats, weather screens and so on.

I remember when we started installing hot tubs 20 years ago; so many comments were made such as “Not in this country”. Well they are now common place.

Technology has created a fun and useful piece of equipment

that is also practical. The same is happening to the “transterior”. Furniture that can be left out all year round and is so easy to use and store has modernised the market. Materials are now available that can make it seem you have your actual indoor sofa outdoors.

The look is there. If you want an outdoor kitchen, outdoor cinema and sound system; an office that can be reached from the house in seconds that is warm, safe and full of the creature comforts of the actual office without the drudgery of the commute, it’s all available.

The key is to make the space you have work to suit YOUR lifestyle.

EM-Con Nottingham returns to the Motorpoint Arena in the city centre, on 2nd and 3rd of May 2020 with a show that is set to be out of this world.

There’ll be the usual mix of celebrity guests, cos-players, attractions, many memorabilia stalls, dealers, art and film & TV props coming together for the most exciting show in the galaxy.

Among the guests for this year’s show are Doctor Who star Tosin Cole, who plays current TARDIS team member Ryan, Joonas Suotamo who plays Chewbacca in Star Wars, Game of Thrones and Skins star Hannah Murray, LaMonica Garrett from TV’s Arrow, Supergirl and The Flash, John Ross Bowie from The Big Bang Theory and Tommy Flanagan, star of Sons of Anarchy, Gladiator and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. They’ll be on hand to sign autographs, meet fans and join them in photoshoots and will be appearing alongside a number of other guests from the entertainment world.

in its first year that only the Motorpoint Arena could meet the demand for tickets. With more attendees coming every year, EM-Con is the perfect day out with friends and family, and has been so popular with some fans that last year a couple even chose to get married at the show in full cosplay!

Tickets are on sale now. Full details of the Em-Con weekend can be found online at www.nottingham.em-con.co.uk, including full guest line up, range of ticket options and all the latest announcements.
