May issue published: Thursday 18th April 2017 Deadline date: Thursday 27th April 2017

The Newark Local News has a print run of 19,000 copies and is published every month and is delivered to homes and businesses in Newark, Farndon, Fernwood, Balderton, Coddington and the surrounding villages. Copies are also available in libraries and other public places. The Local News is an independent publication. Nottinghamshire YMCA have pledged up to £1.5 million to help launch the proposed sports and community village in Newark.

The £8.5m project includes after-school clubs, a family cafe, a climbing wall and sports facilities.

A six-lane athletics track has now been confirmed, with support from England Athletics.

Nottinghamshire YMCA says that many stakeholders continue to

have their say, helping to shape the formal planning application due to be submitted in the summer.

Craig Berens, director of operations and programmes at Nottinghamshire YMCA, said: “We are committed to delivering a truly unique and multifunctional space in the shape of the sports and community village in Newark.

“It is an incredibly exciting project to be involved with, especially for our YMCA which has been

committed to improving health and wellbeing in communities for so many generations.

“As a testament to Nottinghamshire YMCA’s commitment to the project, we are prepared to match funds contributed by charitable trusts up to the total of £1million. In addition to this, we also pledge to match funds up to £500,000 from direct contributions.”

Nottinghamshire YMCA hopes that the proposed match funding

will encourage other prospective funders to participate in this exciting inter-generational and collaborative project in the heart of Newark.

Todd Cauthorn, operations manager for Children, Young People and Families at Nottinghamshire YMCA said: “The space and scope of the site means that we can build something that really brings together a huge number of local people.

“Families, sports clubs and individuals will all find something of interest. I’m really looking forward to being a part of it.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who has showed their support so far, and look forward to meeting many more members of the community in the months to come.”

Nottinghamshire YMCA hope to submit a formal planning application by summer 2017 and to start site work by the end of the year.

Plans to build 350 new homes at Fernwood Meadows South - on land to the east of Fernwood in Newark - have been brought forward by the housing developer Larkfleet Homes

The site at Fernwood has been allocated for development in the Newark and Sherwood District Council Core Strategy Development Plan, which was adopted in March 2011.

The new development would include a mixture of private and

affordable properties, ranging from one to five-bedroom homes for families, first-time buyers and the elderly.

A letter has been distributed to local residents providing information about the proposal, along with details about a public exhibition.

Hannah Guy, planning manager at Larkfleet Homes, said: “The proposed new development at Fernwood will help meet growing national and local housing needs.

“We are keen to consult fully with local people about our proposals before we submit a planning application and would like to encourage residents to share their views by completing a feedback form.”

Further details about the proposals are available on the project website larkfleetplanning.co.uk/Fernwood. People can also call 0800 975 5852 if they have any queries or email [email protected].

05The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews NEWS

Students from the Magnus Church of England Academy in Newark have been gaining valuable food industry qualifications.

This has been possible because of a very successful collaboration on the training with Newark’s Bakkavor Deserts.

Lisa Mckeon, head of food at Magnus, said that students gained experience of a professional working environment in the intensive two-day training at Bakkavor’s Jessop Way site.

“The off-site training gave students a mature and independent attitude towards this qualification and gave them a chance meet professionals in the work place,” she told The Local News.

The students achieved the HABC (Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance) Level 2 award in food safety in catering.

This demonstrated competence in the working environment and safe handling of food from field to fork.

“Now this certificate can go on their CV, making them a more attractive prospect to potential employers,” added Lisa.

“It has also given the students an insight in terms of their theory work for catering GCSE and of working in the food industry.”

Caron Brooks, head of HR at Bakkavor, said: “We were really

keen to work with Magnus and have invested previously in their tech facilities.

“We thought it was a great idea to work with this age group.

“It is particularly important because they are at a stage of thinking about future careers and in all, 31 students took part at our Learning Academy in Newark.

“They were really enthusiastic about it.”

Kinga Lukaszewicz helped to train the students and said: “It was a good experience not only for the students but also for us.

“I think it was good for the students to be in a real working site too, away from school.”

Year 11 student, Monica Zon, added: “It was a really good and concise course.

“We had everything we needed there and went into much further detail and also saw it in practise.

“It was nice to work outside of school and to be treated just like the other staff.

“It was all very professional and the training officers were really nice too.”

Paul Carlin, of Newark, has written a book called ‘A Soldier’s Return’, which is a ghost story with its roots in the First World War.

He told The Local News: “I have always really enjoyed fiction, set against the First World War and ghost stories.

“I particularly enjoy the traditional ghost stories.

“Stories set in an atmospheric, creaking old house where a malevolent ghost lies in wait for any who enters.

“The spark for this story came at a creative writing class I attended.

“Postcards were handed out and we were asked to write 500 words on any subject connected to the picture on the card. My card depicted an old railway station, so I got to work.

“I decided to write about a governess who was travelling to a country house to look after a child orphaned in the First World War.

“In many ways, the story came before the characters. However, the lives of people living around that time and the effect upon them of the war has always been of interest.

“A Soldier’s Return reflects the changes in all walks of life to many of those living at that time.

“I have tried to reflect this whilst telling the characters’ respective stories.”

Paul Carlin was born in 1960 and he divides his time, as far as possible, between home in Nottinghamshire and France.

A Soldier’s Return is Paul’s first novel and was published by Austin Macauley.

It is available to purchase from Amazon and all good bookshops.

For more information, please visit the website austinmacauley.com.

With headquarters in London and New York, Austin Macauley Publishers have established itself as an energetic and innovative independent trade publisher.

Publications range from historical romances to celebrity autobiographies; from illustrated children’s tales to in-depth technical manuals; from hard-hitting thrillers to meditative poetry.

Newark author Paul pens First World War book Bumper year for Oxfam in NewarkThe Oxfam Books & Music shop in Newark had a terrific year in 2016, increasing its contribution to the charity by an amazing 50% on the previous year.

Manager, Liz, said: “We are so grateful to everyone, donors, customers and volunteers alike, for their generosity. Now we need to do it all again in 2017.”

One major success for the shop was the sale of Nick Drake’s first LP that sold for £700 to a customer from Nottingham. The record was discovered in a donation by Kate Murrell, the former manager, who still volunteers with the shop. She was very excited by the find and spent a great deal of time researching it in order to do the best for Oxfam.

The shop at 18 Cartergate is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 4:30pm and staff are always delighted to receive donations of books, CDs, DVDs and vinyl, which can be collected. If you’d like to have a look behind the scenes, they are holding taster sessions on Friday 14th April. Drop into the shop to book your slot, or call 01636 705851 for more details.

A local academy has raised over £200 for St Barnabas Hospice following a successful carol concert held at St Wulfram

Walton Girls’ High School students, inlcuding Newark’s Abby-Faith Baker, proudly presented the donation to Janie McCormick from St Barnabas Hospice during one of their lunch breaks.

St Barnabas is a local charity which provides support to adults living with life-limiting illnesses and their families - and is Walton’s chosen school charity for 2017.

The choir service was organised by Walton pupils and featured performances from their Chamber Choir, as well as musical interludes from a number of the students.

The event, which was hosted by St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham, was a resounding success.

The pews were packed with members of the public joining parents, staff and governors for a fantastic experience.

Janie McCormick, from St Barnabas, said: “We are incredibly grateful for every donation we receive. As a charity, we need to raise £5.5 million per year to continue the services we provide

and every donation really does help us so much.”

Caroline Saxelby, principal at the school, said: “The Walton ethos encourages working with the local communities and our students

take pride in the contributions they make.”

Four members of staff at the Newark office of independent estate agent Alasdair Morrison and Partners have achieved 50 combined years of service and experience in sales and lettings.

The estate agent’s sales manager Dawn Cox realised the achievement when she recently celebrated her 14th anniversary of working at Alasdair Morrison & Partners.

She told The Local News: “When I hit my anniversary, I quickly realised that our combined years of service actually added up to a much greater achievement.

“It was the same as a golden anniversary in fact.”

Combining with Dawn’s 14 years of service as sales manager are Wendy Potts, a valuer negotiator with 12 years.

There’s also Deb Simpson, the lettings manager of 13 years and Jane Owen, lettings administrator for 11 years.

Looking back over her estate agency career, Dawn said: “Over the last 14 years, I’ve seen the job of an estate agent change quite dramatically.

“In the beginning, we would work with buyers to agree a sale or a let

and then wait for the solicitors to complete the transaction.

“However, today our role is so much more critical as we are now the main contact between all parties in the sales and lettings process.

“We keep the property transaction on track right right through to the completion.”

Dawn attributes the fantastic success and staying power of the Golden Girls at Alasdair Morrison & Partners to their continuing passion for the job.

She added: “Our unwavering desire to continually improve our local knowledge and expand our property experience means that our customer service levels are always exceptional.

“Our clients know they can expect and rely on a very high standard of service from the whole team.”

Alasdair Morrison, who himself has worked as a chartered surveyor in Newark and Southwell for over 35 years, said: “Loyalty, dedication, integrity and trust are the key to the firm’s success.

“This has been shown in the golden service offered by everyone at Alasdair Morrison and Partners.”

Nine-year-old Nottingham Forest fan Jack Lee-Brown is now the proud owner of a shirt signed by striker Ross McCormack after netting it in a competition.

McCormack, 30, is currently on loan at the Championship club from Aston Villa.

Jack, from Newark, attended a presentation at the West Bridgford branch of The Nottingham building society.

The youngster received the autographed top from the man himself (pictured below).

City Ground season-ticket holder Jack attends games with his parents and two brothers.

Throughout the 2016-17 campaign he has been consistently collecting reward stickers as a member of the Junior Reds club.

His haul of stickers made him eligible for a prize draw.

When his name came out of the hat he was given the chance to meet McCormack at The Nottingham.

The society have been supporters of Forest via their Nottingham Forest saver account for over 10 years.

On coming back down to earth after his encounter with one of his idols, Jack told The Local News:

“It was great to meet him, I am really happy.

“My family and I are all really big Forest fans, so this has made our day.

“It really is a good idea that The Nottingham is very much involved with Nottingham Forest.

“They really care about being part of the community.”

People wanting to find out more about the Nottingham Forest Saver Account can visit their local branch, or log on the website via thenottingham.com/savings.

The Nottingham were founded in 1849 by a group led by Samuel Fox (1781–1868), who was a prominent local grocer.

The purpose of the society was to promote the construction of a better class of dwellings, suitable for the working and middle classes.

Their remit was also to provide a safe and profitable place for small savings.

In 1970, the Nottingham Building Society acquired the Grantham Building Society.

Local family business A&G Chem-Dry are delighted with the response from Local News readers to their fantastic new granite care service, since they launched it last year.

Well known locally as carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning experts, A&G Chem-Dry decided to offer its unique granite renewal service following many requests from customers.

As Mike, from A&G Chem-Dry, explains: “Over the years, our customers often asked us who they could trust to clean and care for their beautiful granite worktops.

“Many had tried DIY methods, without success.

“Our service is called granite renewal as the system not only

cleans granite surfaces, but removes bacteria, seals and polishes too.

“Quite simply, granite worktops are renewed both in appearance and their feel.

“As you would expect from us, our professional Chem-Dry granite worktop renewal service uses green certified solutions.

“As with our carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning solution, these are safe and non-toxic.

“Our unique four-stage renewal process safely and effectively removes dirt and residues, penetrating deep inside the porous surface of the granite, eliminating dirt, grime and residues.

Stage 1 Cleaning - Dirt, grime and germs are removed from your granite worktops.

Stage 2 - Any remaining residues are removed from your granite surfaces.

Stage 3 Sealing - As the sealer penetrates, your granite is left with a powerful protective layer.

Stage 4 Polishing - This step leaves your granite worktops revitalised and refreshed, with a bright and beautiful shine that you will enjoy for months, and possibly years, to come.

Do you remember how your carpets, rugs, upholstery and granite worktops looked and felt when they were brand new?

Do you remember how they were so fresh and clean. They gave such a great impression that you felt

really proud when friends, family or other visitors dropped in?

Do you still feel that way about them? Time takes its toll and could it be that now your carpets, rugs, upholstery and granite work surfaces are not looking as attractive as they once did?

Maybe you have marks and spots here and there? A few dark marks round the skirting and doorways? And in the case of upholstery, are those armrests and cushions looking a little dingy? Are they harbouring stale odours and soiling that affect the indoor air quality? No problem!

For more details, or to arrange a free quote for A&G Chem-Dry’s services, call 0115 989 4443, email [email protected] or visit their website by logging onto AG-ChemDry.co.uk.

Prograss, your local professional lawncare service company, are proud to be classed as an independent company. The current economic climate has meant that lots of independent companies have found it tough not being able to compete with the big budgets that multiples and franchises have at their disposal.

Prograss feel that being independent means they can have a more personal and hands-on approach with their customers, making them feel they are a lot more than just a number.

Prograss are easily contactable and this means any issues can be raised quickly, usually speaking

directly to one of the owners, Tony or Rachael.

The treatment will also be applied by a qualified member of staff who will make sure that great care and attention is taken for the visit.

Prograss can alter their lawn treatments according to conditions and weather, meaning no treatment is pre-determined.

Prograss would re-arrange a treatment rather than put it on in the wrong conditions.

Prograss are, most importantly, a company you can trust and will never recommend a treatment, be it seasonal or mechanical, that in their qualified and professional opinion is not necessary.

Are you currently using a lawncare company and feel that they could spend a bit more time and pay a little more attention to detail?

Perhaps they are recommending additional treatments that may not be necessary. If this is the case, why not give Prograss, a company you can trust, a go.

A Prograss lawn programme can be surprisingly inexpensive, often not costing much more than buying the product from DIY or garden centres.

They will be applied correctly with professional equipment by a qualified operator.

Prograss also use products that are only available to the trade and are as safe and organic as what is available.

To contact or arrange a free, on-site survey phone 01949 837367, email [email protected]. Alternatively, visit us at pro-grass.com.

Alton Towers has reopened for the 2017 season and here’s your chance to win a family ticket to the world-class theme park.

The resort boasts two spectacular hotels, extraordinary golf, a wild and wonderful water park and a soothing luxury spa.

It’s no wonder Alton Towers is one of the UK’s top-five tourist attractions and very popular with guests from across the country.

Set in the heart of Staffordshire, there’s something for everyone to enjoy from the very young with CBeebies Land to the thrill-seekers who want to ride the exciting rides.

The theme park opened back in 1980, on 4th April to be precise, and the hotel was open to the public in 1996, while the water park opened in 2003.

The history of the park goes back even further though. Back in the 1860s, flower shows and garden tours took place on the site, before a fairground attraction opened in the 1950s and was expanded in the 1970s.
