Be careful what you name your child.

Because his/her name may have a meaning you did not intend. Take for example the name ‘Cabul’, which means ‘displeasing or dirty’. The name ‘Jael’ means ‘mountain goat’. I can hear the pastor declaring Jael’s marriage to those in attendance, “I know present to you, Mr. & Mrs. Mountain Goat, I mean Jael.”

My wife and I take naming our children very seriously. We want our children to have a name that has meaning and evokes a conversation about God. This pattern is seen throughout the Bible in the naming of children. In fact we read many different names of God throughout the Bible, which range from Peace, Almighty, Strong One, Sanctifier, etc. God is concerned about names and their meanings.

This past June, the Southern Baptist Convention held it’s annual meeting to discuss pertinent topics. One of these topics is the name “Southern Baptist” itself. The word Southern in ‘Southern Baptist’ stems from having been founded in the Southern United States. The SBC became a separate denomination in 1845

in Augusta, Georgia, following a regional split with Northern Baptists over the issue of slavery. These past connotations have been a turn-off and barrier of attending a SBC church. The proposed name change for the convention is “Great Commission Baptists”, which would lend itself to the mission of the church. The decision is still being weighed.

Interestingly enough, to further heal the past, the Southern Baptist Convention voted it’s first African-American president, Fred Luter to the Convention. How ‘God-ronic’ that Fred Luter was elected the Southern Baptist Convention president on Juneteenth, which celebrates the end of slavery.

A name and it’s meaning is important. But the most important name is His name above all else.

Philippians 4:8 says “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him

and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

May we draw upon His name, Honor His name and live our lives for His name.

Agape,

Pastor Pat

Summer is officially here! I pray you are enjoying this season of outdoors and family time. My sixteen-month old son, Shiloh, LOVES being outside so we are really enjoying the great outdoors!

I wanted to share with you from the studies we are doing in the college ministry. We have embarked on a journey to explore the twenty-six times in scripture where God reveals His name. Isn’t that amazing? There are twenty-six times where God speaks of Himself in a new way, giving us new insight into who He is.

So far this has been a fascinating study. Each week we are understanding God in a deeper and fuller way and it is all based on who He says He is and not on our assumption.

One of the major things I have noticed is the way in which we tend to fragment the Lord in order to understand Him better. For example, it’s easier for us to tackle love without the presence of judgement or to understand grace without sovereignty. This is the kind of thinking that spawns questions like, “How could a loving God...?”

We attempt to rationalize our picture of God in order to fit our understanding instead of conforming our understanding by faith to what He says He is.

Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” There is so much held within this simple and short verse but one of the most important things we see is the complete unification of God. Though He is three, He is perfectly one. Even in His nature,

He is one. What this means is, He cannot be part of Himself without being all of Himself. He is the perfect One and He is always perfect in all of His nature AT THE SAME TIME. He does not take off His sovereignty hat to wear His grace hat, nor does He take off His love hat to wear His judgement hat. The reality is, in His perfect judgement He is at the same time loving perfectly.

One of the things our students have been amazed by is how God can be creator (Elohim) and the God who sees me (El Roi) at the same time. How amazing it is for us to serve a God who exists outside of time and space yet sees into the depths of His creation and has thoughts about us which outnumber the grains of sand. Yet it is true. However, for us to enjoy this reality, we must submit to it. To submit to it, we must realize we are never going to fully comprehend it.

We must take God at His word because HE IS GOD and we are not.

Immediately when we decide we will submit to the Lord based on who He is and not who we think He should be, we will no longer be held captive by our narrow-minded understanding and we will be freed into the enjoyment of Almighty God.

Lord, may we take you at your word. May we not allow our inability to comprehend limit our faith in You. You are perfect in all Your ways and we submit to you with all we are. Amen.

I was recently discussing with a friend all the ways we as parents are pulled in different directions. You want to be intensional about teaching your children God’s word and wondering if you are doing enough? Are we opening the word with them enough? Are we equipping them with scripture? Are we living out Godly examples to them in our day? Are our conversations glorifying the Lord? Are the things we are watching on TV or listening to in our car glorifying God or not? I think these are valuable questions and we each need to really evaluate what we are doing and how we are doing the job that God gave us - raising children that glorify Him.

So, through our discussion, I began to think of those times when I felt like my kids had the biggest impact spiritually. Those times we would call “God moments.” When the kids have paused long enough to see or realize that things are bigger than them.

These are “God moments”. You can rush past them yelling “just put on your seat belt” or “get in the car” or you can join them in the Pause.

Join them in the pause... as they are in awe of the sheer number of stars in the sky to explain the promises that God made to Abraham and how he kept those promises.

Join them in the pause...as you console them after realizing they were following a stranger at the grocery store. Teach them how to use Joshua 1:9 in those moments.

Join them in the pause... when you see your child glance over at you when something just flashed across the TV to see if you were going to say something. It is your chance to teach about the Holy Spirit’s prompting and how they need to be quick to obey that nudge...that was the Holy Spirit.

Those God moments are intended not only for our children but for us. Those moments can bring such insight for us and for our children as we bring God into our daily activity. Are we creating “Pause” in our lives so that we can once again be in AWE that things are much bigger than us?

Soak in your “God Moments!”

Pause for a “God Moment”

Summer is in full swing and we are having a blast!

The first week of June we went to Memphis for our mission trip. The students excelled at showing the love of Christ. The first morning was a rain out, that really put a damper on the excitement. The students were able to overcome and the excitement level reached a new high. We were able to touch the lives of ninety students everyday. The youth taught the kids about the Fruit of the Spirt. We also were involved in street cleanup, visiting nursing homes, and put on a sports camp.

Last year’s Memphis trip made us take our Week in the Park to a whole new level. At this year’s Week in the Park, we plan on having a work day on June 30th to get the area in the park ready for visitors. The youth will be painting the tables, cleaning and painting the bathrooms, and making sure the pavilion is in good shape. Week in the Park will actually be held from July 16-20. The youth will be staying at the church from July 15-20. We will be conducting Back Yard Bible Studies at the park in the mornings and doing local missions in the afternoon. Some of the afternoon mission projects include visiting a nursing home, street cleanup, and a possible block party on Wednesday night in the park. We would really like to make this a church wide event. There are lots of avenues that you can plug into. From helping with the bible studies or helping us prepare meals for the youth. If you are interested in helping with Week in the Park please contact me at 936-553-2208.
