Michael Main and Ada Seabright, cosmetologists and old riends, havecreated Manes Unlimited, a newbeauty salon or Winchester. Teyworked together or eight years andwent their own ways or a while, butboth eel that in coming ull circletheyve ound the perect solution aspartners in this one.

Manes Unlimiteds name is a playon words because Michaels lastname is Main and, Weve both lit-erally done an unlimited number omanes in our time, said Michael with

    a laugh.An atmosphere o tranquility and

beauty with the sounds o tricklingountains and soothing backgroundmusic greet visitors at their newspace at 161 Prosperity Drive. Acomortable waiting area invites witha soa, owers and reading material.

Weve created an environmentwhere people want to come, saidMichael.

But it is the combined seventy-ve

years experience o the expert styl-ists that adds the essential compo-nent to the salon.

Tat makes us sound old. Mi-chael commented.

But it is what keeps their clientscoming back. Both have loyal cus-tomers and some that have been wi ththem since they started their careersin the 70s.

I could have retired by now, but Ihave no regrets. I still love getting upin morning and coming to work andAda eels the same since were backtogether, said Michael.

Its denitely the happiest Ivebeen in my career ever. Its been agreat move-my books are ull andIve gained 12 new clients, agreedAda.

Ada and Michael are independentoperators and have their own clientsand indicidual work stations, but

have cooperated to redecorate andnow share the larger space.Colleen Wiley is Michaels assistant

and is an essential person in the sa-lon. She not only acts as receptionistand makes sure things run smoothly;she also does manicures and pedi-cures by appointment.

Te salon has two styling stationsright now, but they said they wouldbe willing to take on a third personi their philosophy ts with the onethat Michael and Ada believe in-which includes treating their clientslike theyd like to be treated.

Michael and I have the same ethics,Ada explained.

One reason why I dont want towork in a big salon, is that I can getback to good customer service, tomake them eel like amily, and towork with them on a one-to-one ba-sis, to address their outer needs andinner needs, to be there or themand make them eel good about theirwhole sel, she added.

Also, they ocus on giving greathair cuts.

Ive had a lot o bad haircuts and itmade me miserable, Ada said.

And Colleen added, A good hair-cut is the most essential part. Teywork with the persons hair, and take

into consideration i its thin hair orthick. I you have a good haircut, youknow you can work with it.

Ive always thought it was inter-esting that people will spend moneyon clothes and accessories, but noton hair, and you wear hair every day, observed Michael.

Michael and Ada have a historythat goes back to when they metthrough a mutual acquaintance inthe late 80s. Tey worked together inMichaels salon-Manes by Michael-in Creekside.

Tey went their separate ways in1997 when Ada bought the business

rom him, renamed it sign and he went to whis Berryville salon.

In the intervening ytually sold her businamily needed her anmore predictable houed working or salonsers.

In the past month, much haschanged in the 2012 Presidentialelection. Former Massachusettsgovernor Mitt Romney has gonea long way toward achieving whatmany political experts believedwould take all summer: he has e-ectively rallied his partys base andproved he can ride, i not command, the wave o conservative passion tohis benet. While his campaign haslargely played it sae and avoidedunorced errors, Romney has shownhimsel to be a much more challeng-ing opponent than the Presidents

    campaign seemed to expect, despite

the year they have spent assumingthat he would be the nominee.

Meanwhile, President Obamascampaign has suered perhaps theworst month o the past year, as anextremely troubling May jobs reportand the threat o global nancialcontagion rom Europe casts a darkshadow over the economic barom-eters o most Americans. A specialelection in Wisconsin, in which con-servative Governor Scott Walkerdeeated an all-out assault by publicsector unions has cast extreme doubton the one advantage that Obamawas absolutely counting on: an unri-valed ground game. On top o all othis, the wave o money owing into

conservative Super PACS is swamp-ing the unimpressive undraisingdone by Democratic outside groups.

And all o that was beore the Su-

preme Court entered the ray. Yes-terday, in a 5-4 decision the UnitedStates Supreme Court added todrama o this political summer byupholding the core elements o thePresidents signature (and most con-troversial) domestic policy achieve-ment: the healthcare bill. Te de-cision, in which conservative ChieJustice John Roberts wrote the nar-row majority opinion and sided withthe Courts more liberal members, will surely ignite a restorm on bothpolitical sides and bring the contro-versial healthcare policy back intothe spotlight. Te decision acts asan exclamation point to a series oevents, at home and abroad, that is

making this Presidential election sobitter, so close, and so hard to pre-dict.

And yet, or all o these events

the race remains remarkably stable.Despite his undeniable success inrallying his conservative base, MittRomney remains something o anunknown to those swing voterswho like Obama personally, but areclearly looking or an alternative a-ter years o economic ts and starts.Te door is clearly open to Romney, but he has to close the deal. TePresident is clearly reeling, but isstill an exceptionally skilled politi-cian and the incumbent. Even theSupreme Court decision on health-care is likely to only reinorce thepartisan divide. Tose convincedthat the Aordable Care Act is biggovernment at its worst will double

down in their eorts to elect MittRomney and repeal it. Tose whoare equally convinced that it will leadto a ar more just society will rally tothe Presidents side. And swing vot-ers, who polls show dislike the bill asa whole but are quite ond o manyo its components, will likely remainjust that: swing voters.

    Attract Birds & Butterfies

    No Matter What Size

    Your Landscape

by gardening expert, TV/radio host& author Melinda Myers

Add a little extra color and motion to your summergarden with containers designed to attract birds andbutteries. Many garden centers continue to sell an-nuals throughout the summer and many o these mid-season annuals are a bit bigger, providing instant im-pact.

Its easier than you think to attract birds and butteriesand the good news is you dont need a lot o space todo it. Container gardens give you the ability to attractwildlie to your backyard, patio, deck or even balcony.Simply ollow these our steps and your garden will belled with color, motion and a season o wildlie.

1- Provide ood or birds and butteries. Includeplants with at daisy-like owers like pentas, zinnias, and cosmos to attract butteries. For hummingbirds, include some plants with tubular owers including nicotiana, cuphea, salvia, and uchsia. And dontorget about the hungry caterpillars that will soon turn into beautiul butteries. Parsley, bronze en-nel, and licorice vines are a ew avorites that make great additions to container gardens. You can evencreate containers that will attract seed-eating birds. Purple Majesty millet, coneower, coreopsis, andRudbeckias will keep many o the birds returning to your landscape.

2- Include water or both the birds and butteries. Its a key ingredient and a decorative small shal-low container lled with water can be included in a large container. Or include a ree-standing birdbathwithin your container collection. I used a bronzed lea birdbath in just this way. It created a great verti-cal accent, added interest to a blank wall and provided a water supply or the birds.

3- Give them a place to live and raise their young. Add a ew evergreens, ornamental grasses, andperennials to your container garden. Use weather resistant containers that can tolerate the extreme

heat and cold in your garden. Ten ll with plants that are at least one zone hardier. Or add a ew bird-houses. Tese can be included in the container or mounted on a ence, post, or nearby tree.

4- Skip the pesticides, please. Nature, including the birds you invite into your landscape, will devourmany garden pests. Plus, the chemicals designed to kill the bad guys can also kill the good bugs andwildlie you are trying to attract. And, i pests get out o hand, use more eco-riendly products likesoaps, Neem, and horticulture oil as a control mechanism. And, as always, read and ollow label direc-tions careully.

And to conserve time and energy, try using one o the sel-watering containers or hanging baskets thatare on the market. Tis helps to make it both easy and convenient when time constraints and vacationsget in the way o providing ideal care. I recently tried using one o the Gardeners Supply Easy Rollersel-watering containers. I lled one with wildlie-riendly petunias along with papyrus and goldenmoneywort. Ater a ve-day trip during hot dry weather I returned to nd my container garden ingreat shape and hummingbirds visiting the owers.

So gather your amily and get started planting your wildlie container garden today.

WASHINGON, June 14, 2012 -- oday, USDA released the annual

report, Expenditures on Childrenby Families, nding that a middle-income amily with a child bornin 2011 can expect to spend about$234,900 ($295,560 i projected ina-tion costs are actored in*) or ood, shelter, and other necessities to raisethat child over the next 17 years. Tisrepresents a 3.5 percent increaserom 2010. Expenses or transporta-tion, child care, education, and oodsaw the largest percentage increasesrelated to child rearing rom 2010.Tere were smaller increases inhousing, clothing, health care, andmiscellaneous expenses on a childduring the same period.

Te report, issued annually since1960, is a valuable resource to courts

and state governments in determin-ing child support guidelines andoster care payments. Te reportis based on data rom the Federalgovernments Consumer Expendi-ture Survey, the most comprehensivesource o inormation available onhousehold expenditures. For the year2011, annual child-rearing expensesper child or a middle-income, two-parent amily ranged rom $12,290to $14,320, depending on the age othe child.

Te report, developed by theUSDA Center or Nutrition Policyand Promotion, notes that amilyincome aects child rearing costs.A amily earning less than $59,410per year can expect to spend a to-tal o $169,080 (in 2011 dollars)on a child rom birth through highschool. Similarly, middle-incomeparents with an income between$59,410 and $102,870 can expect tospend $234,900**; and a amily earn-ing more than $102,870 can expect tospend $389,670.

For middle-income amilies, hous-ing costs are the single largest expen-diture on a child, averaging $70,560or 30 percent o the total cost over17 years. Child care and education(or those incurring these expenses)and ood were the next two larg-est expenses, accounting or 18 and16 percent o the total cost over 17

years. Tese estimates do not include

costs associated with pregnancy orthe cost o a college education oreducation beyond high school.

Te report notes geographic varia-tions in the cost o raising a child, with expenses the highest or ami-lies living in the urban Northeast, ollowed by the urban West and ur-ban Midwest. Families living in theurban South and rural areas have thelowest child-rearing expenses.

Tis is the 51th year USDA has is-sued its annual report on the cost oraising a child. In 1960, the rst year

the report was issued, a middle-in-come amily could have expected

to spend $25,230 ($191,720 in 2011dollars) to raise a child through ageseventeen. Housing was the larg-est expense on a child both thenand now. Health care expenses on achild doubled as a percentage o totalchild-rearing costs. In addition, somecurrent-day costs, such as child care, were negligible in 1960.

Expenses per child decrease as aamily has more children. Familieswith three or more children spend22 percent less per child than ami-lies with two children. As amilieshave more children, the children can

share bedrooms, clothing and toyscan be handed down to younger chil-

dren, ood can be purchased in largerand more economical quantities, andprivate schools or child care centersmay oer sibling discounts.

Te ull report, Expenditures onChildren by Families (2011), is avail-able on the web at www.cnpp.usda.gov. In addition, an interactive web

version o the report is availablewhere amilies can enter the numberand ages o their children to obtainan estimate o costs.

*Projected inationary costs areestimated to average 2.55 percentper year. Tis estimate is calculated

by averaging the rate o ination overthe past 20 years.

**For the purposes o this report,a middle-income amily is dened asthe middle third o the income dis-tribution or a husband-wie amilywith children.
