Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,  Welcome back to Term 3. I trust that students and their families had a relaxing break.    During the holidays, parents/carers would have accessed their child’s Semester One Report via SEQTA. This is always a good  me to sit down together and discuss their progress and congrat-ulate them on the areas of success as well as plan for how they may improve in the second semester.    It is important for the students to set goals for their learning and targets they wish to achieve, to reflect on what they may need to do differently to achieve them and to adhere to the  maxim: If nothing changes, nothing changes!

As we begin the new term it gives me great pleasure to welcome back to the College from  extended periods of leave John Cumpsty, Sabrina D’Cruze, Louise Law, Mary McGonigle, Kana Nobata, Raelene Ri kis, Sharon Rossbach and Joe Sciorilli.  We also welcome to our College community, Sara Woodcock (VET/Careers Coordinator).  We congratulate Sara on her appointment and wish her well.

WORKING TOGETHER ‐ HOME‐SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP  

In choosing Ursula Frayne Catholic College, parents/carers enter into a partnership with the College where the responsibility of their child’s educa on is shared between the family and the Frayne community.  This partnership is based on the guiding principles described in the Col-lege Code of Conduct which can be accessed via the College website (h ps://www.ufcc.wa.edu.au/images/pdf/code_of_conduct_131216.pdf) and takes place in an environment of open respec ul and two-way communica ons where the expecta ons for the partnership are under-stood by everyone involved.  Frayne strives to be a welcoming community of faith, hope and love, where communica on takes place in an environment of openness, trust, mutual respect and in the interest of all students.  The College provides many opportuni es to communicate and meet with parents through regular newsle ers, SEQTA messages and formal mee ngs such as parent-teacher mee ngs and informa on nights.  It is natural that there will be other  mes that parents need to speak with their child’s class teacher/s or members of the Execu ve Leader-ship Team to discuss and resolve any issues, misunderstandings or concerns.  For everyone’s wellbeing, these ma ers should be carried  out at an appropriate TIME, PLACE and MANNER and in the spirit of the Code of Conduct so that all people are treated with courtesy and  respect.  As a welcoming and inclusive community, Frayne encourages two-way communica on with parents.  So that this communica on can take place in a respec ul and meaningful way, parents are asked to observe a number of guidelines when communica ng with the College.  

Teachers are the first point of contact.  

To discuss your child’s learning or experience at school, parents are asked to make an appointment to meet with the appropriate teacher  so these issues can be discussed construc vely.  On the Balmoral Campus, the appropriate teacher will be the classroom teacher.  On the  Duncan Campus, the appropriate teacher is the subject teacher.  For more global concerns, contact could be made with the appropriate Assistant Head of School (Balmoral) or the Learning Area Co-ordinator or Cluster Leader (Duncan).  

Members of the Execu ve Leadership Team are also available.  

If the appropriate teacher/s cannot resolve the issue or concern, members of the College Execu ve Leadership Team are also available to talk with parents.  Parents are asked to make an appointment to meet at a mutually convenient  me.  

Parents should not approach other students or parents to clarify any issues or concerns involving their own child.  

All ma ers should be discussed with the appropriate teacher who can then discuss the ma er with the relevant staff and students.  

THE VALUE OF MUSIC STUDY  

Yesterday, a group of students and staff represented the College at the Opening Mass for the 2019 Performing Arts Fes val for Catholic Schools & Colleges in Western Australia at St Mary’s Cathedral.  The fes val is an annual celebra on of the spirit and tradi on of performing arts in Catholic educa on.  In the spirit of the ‘season’, I take this opportunity to highlight not only the central role of The Arts in the Frayne curriculum but to also encourage current and prospec ve students to take advantage of the opportuni es available at the College to study music.  Music is unique and not like any other school learning experience. Through the study of music, students are given the chance to experience the beauty of musical expression and the opportunity to share their gi s and talents with others through performance.  Many students search for crea ve opportuni es to share with others and sa sfy their need to express themselves and communicate with others; music  allows them to do this.  It is also a powerful force in human learning and language, and an important founda on for comprehension as it  develops the students cri cal listening and thinking skills.  Students develop the ability to recognise and respond to the fine detail of music and this provides a depth of understanding and apprecia on that enhances the individual.  Music allows students to expand their academic achievement and provides them with opportuni es to thrive and demonstrate their mastery in ar s c produc on and performance.    According to Mr Ashley Baker (Co-ordinator of Instrumental and Choral Programs): “Beauty, compassion, feeling, apprecia on, sensi vity, love, peace, tolerance, sympathy, warmth, empathy, self‐esteem, co‐opera on and respect......These are but a few ‘life priori es’ hidden in the study of music! No other discipline addresses these ‘life priori es.”   The study of voice or instrumental music for an extended period of  me is an opportunity to aid in nurturing these ‘life priori es’ and is why the College believes in the value of music educa on, witnessing daily the impact that a good music programme has in developing confident, flexible and knowledgeable young men and women.

CONGRATULATIONS  

We congratulate Solly Lindsay (Year 9) who, during the holidays, competed in the Na onal Championships for Fencing (Under 15 and 17).  Solly was successful in receiving a silver medal in the Under 15 team event.  Well done Solly!  With regards and best wishes.

Performing Arts Fesival  

On Thursday the Catholic Performing Arts Fes val was officially opened through a beau ful mass at St Mary’s Cathedral celebrated by the Most Reverend Timothy Costelloe SDB, Archbishop of Perth.  The mass highlighted the many aspects of The Arts through music, song, choirs, liturgical dance and drama.  The Senior School Arts Leaders; Long Ta, Isabel Banu, Blake Dearnley and Jimmy Pham  represented the College at this event.  This year marks 30 years of the Catholic Performing Arts Fes val and Ursula Frayne College has made significant contribu ons over this  me. We proudly support our 42 entries this year and we are confident they will enjoy being a part of this fes val and build on their skills as performers through this opportunity to showcase their work.  We congratulate the students at Frayne on their commitment and enthusiasm towards The Arts and we look forward to enjoying the many and  varied performances.  Mrs Karen Cassidy Learning Area Co‐ordinator, The Arts

Chaplain’s Reflection  

SAINTS JOACHIM AND ANNE  

Saints Joachim and Anne are considered, by tradi on, to be the parents of Mary, the Mother of Jesus; so the grandparents of Jesus.  There is no historical record of their names and all we know of them (their names), through tradi on.  They were an old devoted couple but child-less.  God answered their prayers and a child was immaculately conceived in Anne's womb.  They named her Mary and offered her to God  in the service of the Temple.  It was her parents who taught her to read the Scriptures and to love God.  They taught her to pray and be prepared to open her heart to God's will, so when the angel came to Mary to ask her about God's plan; Mary said "Yes" and became the Mother of Jesus.   Saints Joachim and Anne are the patrons of Parents and Grandparents, interceding to help them in the important mission to pass on the faith to their children.  Parents need to teach their children to pray and to know the love of God and grandparents should share their collec-ve human and spiritual wisdom to offer assistance in the faith development.  

 St Joachim is portrayed as an old man, o en in company with his wife Anne and his infant daughter Mary.  St Joachim holds in his hand a book or scroll represen ng linen makers, a shepherd's staff and some mes a basket of doves represen ng peace.  St Anne is portrayed holding, or with, the Virgin Mary as a child and in some occasions she is also teaching Mary with a book or a scroll.  St Joachim is a great Saint for another great Cluster of our College and the Parish in Victoria Park is also blessed to hold such a name, let us live in their footsteps.

Catholic Youth Summit  

This year a group of Year 9 and 11 students represented the College at the Catholic Youth Summit in Fremantle.  The theme for this year was Chris an Leadership.  Tyana Orlando (Year 11)  was generous enough to share her reflec ons of the day.  

The Catholic Youth Summit was a fantas c opportunity to reflect on my faith, values and leadership quali es.  A par cular highlight of the day was when Dr Shane Glasson  challenged us to reflect on our ability to 'bounce back' and to reconsider how we perceive failure through his session on resilience. His workshop reminded me that failure and hardships are inevitable, but it is our personal response to these  mes that will determine whether we will propel forward or be held back by such adversi es.  Another highlight of the day was listening to the extraordinary stories of other young people who transformed their lives and the lives of people around them by demonstra ng resilience, hospitality, excellence, compassion and courage in various ways.  The Summit was a great environment to leave my comfort zone by mee ng students from other schools and exchanging stories about faith, team-work and leadership.  I have come away from the Summit feeling inspired to embrace my faith and inspired to put my faith into ac on.  There is one quote that really sums up what I have taken away from the incredible experience: "Preach the Gospel at all  mes. When necessary, use words."

Student Representative Council - Balmoral Campus

Music News  

The date for the Music Evening Awards Night has been changed to Monday 23 September.  Please mark this date in your calendars.  

Please note that the Balmoral Campus ‘Spotlight on Soloists’ a ernoon scheduled for 7 August has been postponed.   

Our Senior Trumpet, Trombone and Tuba players travelled to La Salle College today to par cipate in a workshop with the Principal Trumpet player from the London Symphony Orchestra.  This was a once in a life  me opportunity for our young Frayne musicians.  

The fes val began yesterday with the opening MASS and you can be sure that Ursula Frayne will be well represented throughout the Term with many solo/ duet entries and a good showing from our music ensembles.  

Now that the Performing Arts Fes val has commenced, our Ensemble performances start next week at the Don Russell Performing Arts  Centre in Thornlie with our Flute and Saxophone Ensembles on Monday 29 July and our Brass Ensemble on Wednesday 31 July.  

Year 12 student, Long Ta, will be playing the clarinet in the orchestra for the Orchestral MASS at the Solemn Sung Mass, 11.00am this  Sunday, 28 July, at St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth.  The orchestra is mainly made up from student musicians from across Perth’s Catholic  Secondary Schools and Colleges, augmented by some university musicians.  This is a true celebra on of young talent, so if you are able to a end the Mass, please go along.

Sports News  

GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL CUP COMPETITION  

Early in Term 2, the College had three representa ve netball teams which successfully progressed through the High School Cup Compe on, finishing first in their respec ve divisions and zones. The teams’ top posi on advanced them to the Interzone Round of the compe on and gave them the advantage of hos ng the Interzone game against another representa ve school.   

The Year 11/12 team was unfortunately knocked out of the compe on a er a hard-fought game, which saw them go down in an 8-point loss to Darling Range Sports College. Congratula ons to all of those players involved, who commi ed to the team, early morning trainings and represented the College with pride.   

The Year 9/10 team hosted their game at Frayne and narrowly defeated John Forrest Secondary College by just five points.   

The Year 8 team came away with a very convincing win against John Forrest Secondary College.    Both the Year 9/10 and Year 8 teams will now progress again to compete in the Elimina on Carnival next week.  Congratula ons to these two teams and the best of luck.  

Further informa on in regard to the Elimina on Carnival has been provided to those students involved and results will be published following the compe on.   

BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL CUP COMPETITION  

Also in Term 2, netball trials were held for boys interested in represen ng Ursula Frayne Catholic College at the Boys’ High School Cup  Netball Carnival.  The College had a significant number of enthusias c students who nominated and trialled. From this we were able to select three very compe ve teams to represent our College at the upcoming compe on next week.   

I would like to thank all of those students who nominated and trialled and encourage you to con nue trialling for our representa ve sports.   I would also like to congratulate those students (listed below) who were successfully selected in a representa ve team and con nue to  commit and dedicate themselves to scheduled trainings.  

Informa on in regard to the High School Cup Carnival has been provided to those students involved and further results will be published  following the compe on. We wish our representa ve teams the best of luck!
