Congratulations! As an officer of your club during 2000-01 I wish you all the best. Rotary
International’s greatest asset, and its true source of strength, are the over 29,000 individual Rotary
clubs in communities around the world. I am proud that you have accepted the honor and challenge
of serving as leaders of your local club. Furthermore, I am counting on your proactive leadership to
create awareness among clubs members of important Rotary issues - and then to motivate your club
into action.
This year, I would like you to help your club focus on the following key issues:
• pro-active membership development and retention efforts;
• pro-active public relations and media awareness campaigns;
• partnerships with other organisations at the club and district levels; and
• finding innovative pro-active approaches to addressing concerns in our communities such aspopulation and development, poverty, crime reduction, jobs for people with disabilities, avoidableblindness, hunger, and disaster relief.
Thank you in advance for your dedication and commitment both to your own Rotary club as well as
to Rotary International. As we work together in 2000-01, let us never forget that our mission is to
Create Awareness and Take Action in our clubs, our communities, and throughout our world.
Sincerely

Dear President Leslie Yeap,
On this auspicious occasion of your Club’s Installation, Kamala joins me in congratulating you and
members of your Board for being elected to this high office of your Rotary Club.
I thank you for inviting me to write a message for your Club’s Installation souvenir program.
In the lexicon of Rotary, the most prominent and important world is service. There is not a better or
nobler word in the English Language than (service). It is the motto of kings, the goal of patriotism,
the spirit of religion.
With service comes awareness.
The first theme of this century the theme for Rotary year 2000-2001
“ CREATE AWARENESS AND TAKE ACTION ”
For Rotarians, the two functions of awareness and action are closely linked. Awareness is futile
without action, and action is not possible until we have gained awareness. By uniting awareness and
action, Rotarians can ensure that the critical needs of our clubs, our communities, and our world will
be identified and addressed.
District 3300 is proud that you have our Chairman Council of Past Governors RY 2000-2001
PDG Dato Mohd Ariff Shaffie as your guest of honour for your club’s installation.
Kamala and I wish you all an enjoyable and memorable installation.
Together lets Create Awareness and Take Action to make RY 2 0 00- 2 0 0 1 the best Rotary year ever.
Thanking you.
Sincerely
DG Dr R.T. Arasu J P

message from
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
The wheel of Rotary rotates once again. I am one of those many Presidents who are giving way to the
new ones this new Rotary year under the RI theme of ‘Create Awareness, Take Action’. This is like
changing of fresh horses to carry on the momentum of this great organisation.
The Rotary Millennium Year had been a fairly good year for the club with several successful
implementation of meaningful projects that benefited members of our own local community as well
as outskirts and including one overseas. The morale and team spirit of the club members had been
and are as good as ever. Everyone enjoyed the weekly meetings evidenced by the prolonged
fellowships backed by the achievement of being amongst the top 5 in the District’s attendance. We
had an overall membership growth of 2 despite 3 resignations.
It has been my privilege and honour to have served as the 9th President of the club and I only wish I
could have done better. I am most thankful to all fellow Rotarians for their unified support and
participation. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Board of Directors for their untiring
effort and and valuable time in ensuring the successful outcomes of all designated projects and
tasks. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to all the wonderful people like DG Dato Dr
Jaffar Ali, PRID Tan Sri Dato James Peter Chin, AG Dr Yim, AG Dr Low Teong and PP Jack Chan for all
their warm friendship, guidance and encouragement. It has been enjoyable and inspirational working
with so many fine people and I will treasure the many memorable moments we shared together.
Lastly, my congratulations and best wishes to PE Leslie who will be installed as the 10th President of
this to-be decade old club. I am confident that he and his team will have a very successful year.
Yours in Rotary,

Welcome to the 10th Installation Dinner of the Rotary Club of Kelana Jaya, the first of this new
millennium. The Organising Committee has worked hard over the last few months to make this an
interesting evening, the inevitable formalities notwithstanding, and I hope you enjoy yourself.
Once a year, every Rotary club installs a new president and board of directors. This annual change of
leadership ensures Rotary maintains its vitality and vibrancy. It is an honour and a privilege for me to
be given the chance to lead this wonderful club. Together with my fellow Rotarians of the Rotary Club
of Kelana Jaya. we will abide by the Rotary International theme for 2000-2001:
CREATE AWARENESS AND TAKE ACTION
My grateful thanks to our guest of honour, Past District Governor Dato’ Mohd Ariff bin Mohd Shaffie
and his Ann, Datin Josephine, for gracing this occasion. I also wish to thank all of you for coming
tonight, and the members of the Organising Committee for their sacrifice of time and effort. Finally,
my deepest appreciation to our sponsors, advertisers and contributors, whose generous support will
assist us to successfully carry out our Rotary programme in the year ahead.
Yours sincerely,

The world’s first service club was founded on 23 February 1905 when lawyer Paul
Harris and three friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago. These men
wanted to rekindle in the turn-of-the-century city the spirit of friendliness they
had known in their home towns. Word of the club soon spread and others were
invited to join. They named their new club “Rotary” to describe the practice of
meeting in rotation at the members’ various places of business.
Originally formed for fellowship, the first Rotary club quickly evolved to use the
talents and resources of its members to serve the community. By the end of 1905,
the Rotary Club of Chicago had 30 members. Three years later a second club was
established in San Francisco, California, USA. The next year three more clubs were
established on the west coast of the United States and a fourth in New York City.
Within a few years other groups formed service clubs based on the Rotary model.
The first Rotary convention
was held in the Congress
Hotel in Chicago in
August 1910. The National
Association of Rotary Club
was organized at that time
with 16 member clubs. Rotary,
founder Paul Harris was
elected the association’s first
president.
R O TA RY’S INTERNATIONAL GROWTH
During the 1911-1912 Rotary year, the association became international with the
founding of a club in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Soon Rotary crossed the
Atlantic to establish clubs in England, Ireland and Northern Island. The National
Association of Rotary Clubs, which became the International Association of Rotary
Clubs in 1912, adopted the name Rotary International (RI) in 1922.
Before reaching its 20th birthday, the Rotary association had grown to include some
200 clubs with more than 20,000 members across the globe:
• The first Rotary club in Latin America was organized in Havana, Cuba in 1915.
• Asia’s first club was established in Manila, Philippines in 1919.
• In 1921, Rotary clubs were organized for the first time on continental Europe
(Madrid, Spain), Africa (Johannesburg, South Africa), and Australia (Melbourne).
WORKING FOR PEACE
As Rotary grew, so did its scope of
activities. During World War 1, Rotary
discovered new outlets for service – in
war relief and peace fund drives at
home and in emergency efforts abroad.
In 1917, outgoing RI President Arch
Klumph proposed the establishment
of an endowment fund, which in
1928 became the Rotary Foundation.
The Foundation awarded its first
humanitarian grant (US$500) in 1930 to
the International Society for Crippled
Children. After World War II, many
clubs that had been disbanded
during the conflict were re-established
and initiated new service projects,
including relief efforts for refugees and prisoners
of war.
In the aftermath of World War II, Rotary International
sent the largest non-governmental organization
delegation to the United Nations Charter Conference,
held in 1945 in
San Francisco. Forty-
nine Rotarians served as
delegates, advisors and
consultants to the
conference. A Rotary-
sponsored conference of
education ministers and
observers held in
London in 1943 was the
inspiration for the
United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO), established in 1946.
The Ro t a ry Foundation enjoyed modest grow t h
until 1947, when Ro t a rians made a significant
number of contributions in memory Paul Ha r ri s,
who died in Ja n u a ry 1947. That same year the
Foundation launched its first pro g ram, Gra d u a t e
Fe l l owships (today called Ambassadori a l
Scholarships), sending 18 students abroad to 7
c o u n t ri e s. To d a y, more than 1,300 students study
a b road as Ro t a ry scholars eve ry ye a r.
ROTARY TODAY
Rotary’s most ambitious undertaking,
announced in 1985, is the Polio Plus
program – a massive campaign to
eradicate polio by the year 2000.
Conducted with the cooperation of
national governments and intergovern-
mental agencies such as the World Health
Organization (WHO) and the United
Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),
PolioPlus is a paradigm for public/private
sector collaboration in the fight against
disease. PolioPlus helps support national
and regional polio eradication programs
by providing vaccine, surveillance
support and social mobilization. By the
year 2005–the target date for certification
of a polio-free world – Rotarian contributions to the
global polio eradication effort will reach a half billion
US dollars.
First admitted in 1987, women are today the fastest -
growing segment of Rotary membership, and
increasingly hold leadership positions within the
organization. Nearly 2,000 women serve as club
presidents and women are also rapidly assuming
regional roles. Currently, some 1.2 million professional
men and women belong to more than 29,000 clubs
worldwide.
Rotary continues to grow internationally. After the
collapse of the Iron Curtain, Rotary clubs which
been disbanded during World War II were
re-established in central and eastern Europe. In 1990,
Rotary clubs were formed in Russia for the first time,
and other former Soviet republics soon followed.
Kyrgyzstan, once a part of the Soviet Union, is a
recent addition.
Today, Rotary International encourages its clubs to
focus on a broad spectrum of service activities such as
hunger, the environment, violence prevention,
illiteracy, drug abuse prevention, polio eradication,
youth, the elderly, and AIDS awareness and education.
Rotary clubs around the world are united under the
motto “Service Above Self”

C LUB SERVICE REPORT
MEMBERSHIP
The Club started the year with 24
members. It increased its membership to
27 with the addition of 3 new members
namely, Ms Lim Choon Lam, Mr Peter
Martin and Ms Stephanie Sin. However,
in March this year Rtn Dr Rose Yap
submitted her resignation which brought
the membership down to 26 members.
The membership grew by one more with
the induction of Ms Patricia Wong.
Re g r e t t a b l y, Ms Stephanie Sin and Mr Pe t e r
Martin had to leave the club due to
personal reasons. This brings the member-
ship down to 25 again.
As is the usual practice, the club has to
actively seek new membership. One way
was to hold membership development
evenings. In this respect two were
organised for this year. They were held
on 19 August 1999 and 13 April 2000
respectively.
The club also divided the membership
into 4 groups under the leadership of four
past presidents and participate in a
friendly competition to see which group
could bring in the most members.
Without doubt the overall winner was the
group with Rtn K C Chu who has been
actively bringing in new members for the
Rotary Club of Kelana Jaya from the day
she joined.
CLUB ATTENDANCE
Attendance at our club meetings have always been good, namely being in the 80% plus
category. As at May 2000, the club achieved 1st position in the KL and Klang Valley
category and was overall 4th position in the district.
PARTICIPATION IN SEMINARS, CONFERENCE AND DISTRICT ASSEMBLY
The Club was represented at the following seminars :
• RI District 3300 Environmental Awareness Seminar held

• New Generations Seminar held in September 1999
14 club members signed up for the 65th District Conference
held at Shangri-La Hotel from 30 December - 1st January
2000. This Conference culminated in a grand dinner to usher
in the new millennium. Ten of our members together with
a few members from the Rotary Club of Cheras participated
in a western dance presentation for the Conference. Thanks
to Rtn Lynn Abdullah who kindly agreed to be the
choreographer for this dance presentation.
At the 66th District Assembly, 11 of our members signed up for this event. The Club
picked up two awards which were presented at this assembly. They were for :
• Best Attendance at the 65th District Assembly
• Joint Sponsorship of the Rotary Club of USJ with the Rotary Club of Klang. The Rotary
Club of USJ held their Charter Nite on 6 December 1999.
The Club also participated in the Inter-City Sports Meet held on 26 March 2000 at the
Montfort Boys Home. Thanks again to Rtn Lynn Abdullah who coordinated this sporting
event and won the bowling competition for us. The club would also like to mention the
participation of Rtn Jeffrey Lim who won the badminton games, Rtn Josephine Pang,
Rtn Koh Lee Meng and son Adrian, PP Khoo Swee Keng and daughter Diana, PP Wong
Kean Wai and lastly President Edward Pon and his son Ian Han.
The Club was well represented at the Group 3 Night of Recognition held at PJ Hilton on
28 March 2000. Twenty of our club members attended including Rtn Dr Hari Yanasakaran
and Rtn Shanti. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to those doctors and
volunteers who participated in the club’s Hepatitis-B Immunization Programme.
PP Lee Seng Tong, PP Steven Khoo,
IPP Khoo Swee Keng, Rtn Peggy and
Rtn Lynn Abdullah attended the
Inter-City Club Meeting held on 10
May 2000 at the Kelab Shah Alam.
This dinner is organised to meet the

held on 16 January 2000 and 22 January
2000 respectively.
For the Deepavali celebration, Rtn Dr Hari
and Rtn Shanti hosted a fellowship dinner
at their house in Jalan Carey.

spouses were present too. A special menu
was prepared and the dinner was held at
the poolside to invoke an informal
atmosphere. After that they adjourned
for a karaoke session at the club
premises.
Due to the efforts of our Programme
Chairman and with the help of some of
our members, there is a speaker for every
meeting. As a matter of fact the
programme is filled for up to two months
ahead. Every effort is made to try and vary
the speakers’ topics so as to make the
programme interesting and enjoyable.
Two new duties were also introduced into
the weekly Duty Roster for introducing and
thanking the speaker. A token in the form
of a Rotary Mug was presented to every
speaker after their talk.

VOCATIONAL AWARENESS
On 10 October 1999, a
vocational visit was arranged
to the ROYAL SELANGOR
PEWTER factory at Setapak,
Kuala Lumpur. This was a very
knowledgeable visit whereby
the members has a first hand look and experience of how the pewters and jewelleries
were made. A few of our Rotarian members tried the hitting of the patterns on the
mug but no one past the test of accuracy. After the visit, we had a good fellowship
having a durian feast at the Lake Gardens through the help of our Secretary,
Rtn K C Chu.
VOCATIONAL AWARDS
Each year, a particular profession would be identified and an individual would be
chosen for a vocational award. This year we made it a little different by awarding
two Artist from the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Sdn Bhd. The club selected them
on the criteria that despite their handicaps they had overcome all odds and able to
earn a good living via their unique vocation that is exemplary of their hardworks and
perseverance. One of them is Ng Ah Kwai who was born in Penang without arms. He
joined the Association in 1983 and was awarded “Tokoh Pekerja Cacat” in 1996. He
paints with his foot.
The second candidate is Encik Ismail bin Rakib who was from Kedah and was born in
1970 with deformed hands and legs. He paints with his mouth and a self-taught artist
since school days.
This award was presented to them at our club weekly meeting on 28 October 1999 by
AG Dr Yim. They each received a plaque and a BSN Premium Savings Certificate worth
RM300.00.

5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOC
(FREE OUTPATIENTS CLINIC)
Our Klinik Kebajikan Rotary or in short
‘FOC’ for (Free Outpatients Clinic)
celebrated its 5th year at Kampung
Baiduri. We had a ‘satay’ party and
cake cutting ceremony with the
presence of our AG Dr Yim and his wife,
Gaik Hooi and AG Dr Low Tiong and
wife, Jackie. The party was held
immediately after the closure of the
clinic operation on Friday.
HEPATITIS B IMMUNISATION
PROGRAMME FOR ORPHANAGES
AND SHELTERED HOMES
The Hepatitis B project in short was
financed under Rotary International
Matching Grant of USD 10,900.00.
Phase One saw the immunisation of
almost 1000 children and adults
from 24 orphanages and sheltered
homes. All members of the club were
mobilised and fully involved during
the 3 weekends spread over the period
of 6 months. The total work force
comprised of 25 Rotarians, 16 volunteer
doctors, some nurses from SJMC
and a VIP volunteer none other than
our District First Lady Datin Juriah.
Followed by the resignation of
Dr Rose Yap from our club, IPP Khoo

Organising Chairman for this project
which will go into its Phase 2 sometime
next Rotary year.
CO M M U N I TY SERVICE REPORT
AIDS TO THE NEEDIES
PP Wong passed the hat around and we
managed to collect RM 1481.00 for our
lady volunteer, Ruthra at the FOC to
lessen the burden of her family in
rebuilding their home after a fire. The
money was handed over to her with a
simple ceremony at the clinic.
The hat was passed around again a
couple of months later for a different
cause. It was for our FOC volunteer
Edwin’s brother who sadly was a victim
of a ‘hit & run’ accident that rendered
him paralyzed. We collected only RM
800.00 and it was handed over to his
father at the clinic.
DONATION OF BALLET CONCERT
TICKET TO HOMES
We donated 40 tickets to the ‘Dance
Classique’ ballet concert at the
National Theatre to he children of
Prudential Home and Ozaman Home
who did not had the chance to
experience such show.
GENERAL HEALTH SCREENING FOR
THE SENIOR CITIZENS
Our Rtn Dr Hari and Ann, Rtn Shanti
with some Rotarians spent half a day at
the Senior Citizens Centre at Jalan
Carey, PJ to do a general health
screening for all the old folks. This is
not the first time for them as they had
been doing it for the past years.
JOINT MEDICAL OUTREACH PROJECT
WITH RC PORT KLANG AT ORANG
ASLI SETTLEMENT
For the past 3 years our club had jointly
worked with our buddy club, RC Port
Klang on similar projects. This time
round we targeted on the Orang Asli
Settlement at Bukit Cheeding in
Banting with a successful response of
300 over settlers. We focussed on visual
screening, general medical screening,
de-worming and dental care guidance.
Three hundred pairs of sport shoes,
tooth brushes and pastes including
some spectacles were distributed out
to these needy people. Some of the
Rotarians brought goodies and toys to
be given away to the children. The
event was opened by our AD Dr Yim
and closed by our DG Dato Dr
Jaffar Ali. The event would not have
been successful without the support
and contribution made by almost
120 volunteers comprising of doctors
from KLGH, Interactors, members of
the Inner Wheel PJ and the Press,
Rotarians, their families and friends
from both clubs. It was a first class
performance and teamwork.
INTERNATIONAL JOINT PROJECT
WITH RC PORT KLANG + RC MAPUTA
(MOZAMBIQUE)
Rtn Josephine initiated this meaningful
joint project when she was in
Mozambique. To foster international
and inter-club fellowship, this project
to collect a container load of old
clothing for the needy in Mozambique
was a combined effort amongst 3 clubs,
namely RCKJ, RC Port Klang and RC
Maputa. The combined resources from
all these clubs made the task easily and
more interesting.

Three Swiss World video cassettes from
Swiss Radio International on democratic
and humanitarian Switzerland, Switzer-
land’s culture and diversity and innovative
and ecological Switzerland were shown
during various weekly meetings to highlight
important events of 1997/98 in Switzerland.
They were presented in short clips similar to
a news broadcast. Our Rotarians now know
everything about Switzerland.
SHOOTING COMPETITIONWITH THE SWISS CLUB
On Saturday, 18 September 1999, our club
was invited by the Swiss Club for a friendly
shooting competition at the shooting range
in Subang. Several members of our club

win any of the top 3 prizes however, Rtn Lai
Kam Beng walked away with a very special
prize for ... the lowest score! He won a 2

CLUB OFK E L A N A
J A Y A
A Sh o rt Profile of
The Rotary Club of Kelana Jaya was chartered on 14 January 1992. Our club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya. Two past presidents of RC PJ deserve special mention. PP Dr Low Teong and PP Jack Chan, were instrumental in helping to form our club and have guided usever since.
As at 30 June 2000, we have 25 members. We hope to reach at least 30 by the end of
this Rotary year. One of our distinguishing features is the high percentage of women
Rotarians; we have 10 women members making up 40% of membership.
Our members come from a varied range of businesses and professions, from air-
conditioning to the steel industry, from accounting to medicine. This diversity of
professional interests allows us to call on a wide range of talent whenever we need to
take on a project.
Rotary is a service organisation and service to the community is the “heart-beat” of
Rotary. We have carried out many community projects since our club was formed.
Here are just a few of them:
Free Outpatient Clinic
Located in Kampong Baiduri, PJ, the clinic is now in its 6th year of operation. It is open
every Tuesday and Friday from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. The FOC’s success is owed in large
part to the generous sponsorship of Pan Malaysian Pools Sdn Bhd right from the start.
Hepatitis B Immunization Project
The club immunized over 1,000 children living in orphanages and children’s homes in
the Klang Valley. We intend to carry out another such project with the aid of a grant
given by Rotary International.
Vocational Awards
Each year, we recognise someone for vocational excellence and the practice of high
ethical standards in the workplace. Last year, we gave the award to two foot-and-
mouth artists who have dedicated themselves to excelling in their artistic calling,
despite their handicap.
North Korea Famine Relief Fund
In 1997, during the height of the famine in North Korea, we sold pesticide - free
vegetables and fruits with the support of a generous sponsor, to raise funds to feed
North Korean children.
JE Walkathon
The club was instrumental in helping our Rotary district to organise the JE Rotary
Walkathon in 1999 which raised over RM250,000.00 for the families of victims of the JE
epidemic.
Medical Outreach Project
Every year we conduct a joint project with the Rotary Club of Port Klang to provided
basic medical examination and treatment to rural communities in need of such
services, such as in Pulau Carey, Pandamaran. In May 2000, the club treated over 300
people at the Orang Asli settlement at Bukit Cheeding.
