    Dear Friends,

The Franciscan Renewal Center exists towitness the Franciscan way of life and sharewith others a vision that captures the trans-formative influence of Franciscan spiritualityfor peace and good in the world. So it is with

great joy that we introduce the FranciscanMentors Program beginning in October, 2010.

This is a long-term program that supports thecommunitys desire to not only learn aboutFranciscan spirituality in more depth but toshare that knowledge with other communitymembers.

Learn more about the Mentors Program on page 9 and come to akick-off dinner hosted by the friars on October 29. There you can getall of your questions answered and enjoy some delicious medievalfood.Along with our Mentors Program this Fall, we have awonderful slate of retreats, programs and events sup-porting our vision. Some are explicitly based on Fran-ciscan spirituality or what we refer to as The Franciscan

Way. Those are identified by the symbol of a Franciscanfriar in habit. The habit is a full-length tunic designed in the formof a cross. Originally, it was made of rough, unbleached, homespunwool to reflect a life of simplicity and poverty. It is generally brownin color and tied at the waist by a cord. Three knots at one end recallthe three Gospel vows which are at the base of a Franciscan friarslife. If you want to know more about the Franciscan world-view,these retreats and programs are for you.

We hope you will look through this catalog and find something thatstirs your soul. I look forward to seeing you on our peaceful grounds.

    Peace and All Good,

    Fr. JoeFather Joe Schwab, OFM

ctober,O the month the friars havededicated to St. Francis of Assisi, is filled with specialevents to bring us closer to our founder and allow us to

steep in Franciscan spirituality. The kick-off event for this

year is a special weekend retreat with monk and musician,

Cyprian Consiglio, OSB, Cam, entitled, Prayer in the Cave

of the Heart. It is followed by the moving Transitus and

Feast Day celebrations of St. Francis and the joyous and

much loved Blessing of the Animals. The month will be

capped off with a very special new addition, a Medieval

dinner, with a menu overseen by Fathers Joe & Peter,

marking the beginning of our new Franciscan Mentors

    Announcing

The Franciscan Mentors ProgramA certificate program for Casa Community members

Tere are many special things about the Franciscan RenewalCenter but the one thing that stands out above all the others is ourFranciscanism:

Our belief that God is all love and all goodness and that it isGod s overflowing love that is the source of creation and theIncarnation.

The well-known Franciscan values of joy, hospitality, serviceto the poor and marginalized, simplicity of life and care for allcreation.

The lesser known Franciscan values of relationship overefficiency, looking to the coincidence of opposites for answers, and intuition as a superior form of knowing over rationality.

The hard teachings around poverty and humility and theirsurprising relationship to generosity, love and joy.

These are beliefs we want to preserve and pass on. These areteachings we want to more fully explore. These are values we wantto better understand and support in one another.

In short, we want to encourage the way of life pioneered by SaintsFrancis & Clare to be carried forward by our community in acontemporary way.

Our vision is that theFranciscan Mentors Program will serve tobetter educate a group of community members about our founders, history, values and the Franciscan way of life. In turn, these

community members would then serve as mentors to the rest of thecommunity. The program will involve courses, retreats, prayer days, films and experiences such as visits to the San Carlos Mission andsessions on how to be a mentor.

TransitusTe memorial o the passing o St. FrancisSaturday, October 2, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the church.

Each year, Franciscan men and women all over the world solemnlygather to commemorate a touching event in the life of St. Francis. It is called the TRANSITUS that is, his passage from earthly life toeverlasting life. Francis died (on the evening of October 3rd) justas the brothers were singing the verse from his Canticle of BrotherSun:

    Pr a is ed b e Y o u , m y L o r d , t h r o u g h o u r

    S is t er B o d ily D ea t h , fr o m w h o m n o liv i n g

    p e r s o n ca n e s ca p e .

This is a bittersweet night. On this night we recall some of thelegends of Saint Francis while we encourage one another to livelives of praise deeply rooted in the Gospel.

Francis is rumored to have had a sweet tooth Lady Jacoba usedto bake almond cookies as a gift for him. In fact, she brought themto him the night he died. To celebrate that sweet memory, each yearwe have a dessert potluck by the pool after the Transitus service.

All are invited to bring something sweet to share!

The Feast of St. Francis of AssisiSunday, October 3, 2010,

A celebration o the lie o St. Francis o Assisiobserved at all the regular Sunday masses

As we have come to know, Saint Francis was a man with keenvision, exquisite sensitivity, a great heart, and a deep conviction ofthe eternal values. Certainly he was someone deserving of a great

celebration of his gift to the world. Please come and celebrate hislife and inspiration in these beautiful festive liturgies!

Spiritual direction is a time-honored term for a conversation, ordinarily be-tween two persons, in which one is seeking a companion who is specificallyeducated and experienced about the ways in which God may be touchingher or his life.

    What happens in Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is really not about being directed. Rather, it is verymuch about being encouraged to draw closer to God through conversation, listening and prayer. We talk about whats on your mind. For example:

What is happening in your life that separates you from living intodeeper meaning?

How is God present or absent in your life?

How do you know Gods direction for your life?

How do I find a Spiritual Director?

Call Pat Julian at the Franciscan Renewal Center,480-948-7460, extension 160 or email [email protected].

Within each of us lies the desire beyondthe moment, to discover our true selves, to grow

closer to God and to one another. A spiritual

director can help you satisfy that longing.

Someone has observed that the longest journey is the 18 inches from the head to the heart. Similarly, formost Christians, the longest journey God calls us to take is the journey from what we believe about God inour heads, to what we experience of God in our hearts.

Water from Rock assists Christians in their journey to a heart-felt faith and spiritual renewal towards intimacywith God. We are committed to bringing together sound, biblical thought with a vital experience of God,and invite you to join us in this journey through:

    OUR LADY OF THE ANGELSAT T H E F R A N C I S C A N R E N E WA L C E N T E R

On February 26, 2006, the Chapel at the Franciscan Renewal Center wasdedicated as The Conventual Church of Our Lady Of The Angels. Since thattime, many have asked the question: What is a conventual church?

Churches are conventual when they belong to the convent of the religiouscommunity (in this case, the Franciscans) rather than to the diocese. We arenot a parish.

We will continue to belong to the Franciscan community and continue ourcooperative partnership with the mission of the diocese. A conventual churchis not a parish church; rather it is guided by the religious orderfor the Casa,

the Franciscansin its mission and ministries.

In addition to daily and Sunday Mass, the church offers:

    Baptism, Family Catechesis and Sacrament

    Preparation for Children

Inant BaptismOur Lady of the Angels offers infant baptism to registered members of thechurch. Baptisms take place during Sunday Mass at regularly scheduledintervals throughout the year.. We do not offer private baptisms except inthe case of medical emergencies. If you would like to start the conversation
