FATHER JARETT’S ~ Q & A
Why you should definitely send your H.S. Students to the Prayer and Action Program? When Fr. Gale Hammerschmidt, the mastermind behind the Prayer and Action Program in our diocese, asked me to write my thoughts on the program some years ago, naturally I started by giving him a hard time and telling him that all I could come up with was that it was “worthless and boring.” However, no two words could be further from the truth of what thousands of youth around our diocese have experienced over the last 13 summers. First, a little detail about the times I have attended P&A…The first evening I and the sponsors would gather with the director and were told that we would be dividing the youth into teams so that friends were not on the same team and that later that evening we were going to take away all cell phones, i-pads, and all electronic devices. Soon after, we learned that our beds would be sleeping bags on the floor, lights out was nearly midnight, and wake-up call was somewhere around 6:15 so that we could be up in time for a 6:40 rosary followed by mass. After mass there was another 20 minutes of silent prayer time, then we were given a breakfast of cereal and toast and were told to make our own sack lunch consisting of cold cut sandwiches, chips, and a cookie for lunch. We worked at our work sites scraping, painting, mowing, weed pulling, and shoveling compost in addition to many other odd jobs for about 6 or 7 hours and then came back to a community shower to get cleaned up. This process happened each day Monday through Thursday. Sound like a dream vacation? If before I experienced this program as a newly ordained priest in Junction City in the summer of 2006, you would have described the program to me in these terms I would have laughed and said, the youth are going to hate it and want to go home after a day. However, that was hardly what happened. By the end of the week I had young people telling me that “This was the most powerful experience of their lives,” and “Had they known what the mission trip was going to be like, they would have signed up for all five weeks in a row.” In my time going to youth ministry events over the past 20 years, including three World Youth Days, a whole host of conventions, and multiple youth rally’s from St. Louis to Washington D.C., I have not experienced anything as profound as the Prayer and Action experience. Why is it so profound? Part of it is the simplicity created by all that I have already described. Part of it is the talent and passion of the college leaders who give up their summers to direct the program. Part of it is the evening activities, consisting of music, sharing, and listening, which provides

an opportunity to break down the defenses with which, we human beings, often protect ourselves. Finally, a large part of it is the profound presence of the Holy Spirit when people come together to pray and to serve their brothers and sisters in Christ. Prayer and Action will be happening again in our Diocese this summer and if your high school children and/or grandchildren are not signed up, pay their way and get them there. You (and they) will not regret it.
In Christ’s Loving Service Your Pastor,
Fr. Jarett
