Fourth Sunday of Easter

Regional Gathering of Clergy: Wed. April 20 priests and deacons of the Sudbury region will gather for

prayer, dialogue and planning about pastoral issues of our region. I am no longer chair of this group. Father Peter Moher of Holy Redeemer has taken over.

ATTENTION Widows/Widowers: It has been suggested by a few widows that

widows/widowers, should they choose to, could bring a copy of their wedding photo either to the office or to the next support group on April 20th. These pictures will be organized in a display setting where others can talk about their photo… compare dresses and share their stories. Revisit cherished memories!

Widows/Widowers/Loss of Child Support Group: Our next meeting will be Wed.. April 20th at 5:30 pm downstairs in the Upper Hall. The cost is $6 for the dinner. We ask if any widow/widower or parent that is interested in coming and has never been to a meeting before, to please call the office and give your name. We want to make sure we have plenty of food for everyone. Our numbers are growing quickly and so are the friendships. We also ask that if any widow/widower or parent wishes to join the quiet fellowship dialogue with our facilitator Celia, that they meet in the boardroom which is the lower room below the office at 4 pm. Here you can have a more personal healing time. It is usually in a small group setting and will last until 5:30 pm where the group will then join the others for supper.

First Communion: Congratulations to the children who opened their hearts at the Lord’s Table

and received His Body and Blood this Sunday at their First Holy Communion! Our St. Patrick’s Community supports you and your family as you continue on your faith journey. When you said “Amen”

to the words, “The Body of Christ” you professed your belief that Jesus is present in the Eucharist. How wonderful!

A heartfelt thank-you to Fran Mei who has been making rosaries for the First Communion Candidates from

our Parish for over 20 years. What a beautiful way to encourage children to honour Jesus through prayer! We appreciate her commitment and dedication to our St. Patrick’s Families.

Sharing our faith in Liturgy of the Word with Children: Dear Parishioners,

I have decided to share the touching and faith filled responses that I witnessed a couple of Sunday's ago. The children and I reflected on the Gospel about Thomas and his doubt, as he heard from the disciples that the Lord had visited them. I asked the children as a whole who had ever met Jesus-of course all said no. Then I asked who believed in Jesus and they all raised their hands enthusiastically. I then I asked "why do you believe?" The following are the answers from some of the children. It was truly inspiring and touching to listen to their honest sharing. I wanted to share this because I think in our cluttered and busy lives we must take time to nurture and treasure the faith of our young people. Let's always strive to give our children time to talk about their relationship with Jesus and to encourage them to share their Good News of Jesus in their lives. For me personally, listening to these children reflect on and respond to our Gospel, and liturgy, is truly a gift within my faith journey. Please pray for this ministry, our children and for future leaders to come forth to be a part of this very important part of our Church. Thank you. Why do you believe? "I believe because.... "how can we not believe? we base our time line on Jesus' life.., AD, BC etc"; "because the bible is filled with stories about Jesus"; "because my teacher told me there were 50 days in Easter"; "because we pray to Jesus"; "because my Grandma and Grandma told me Jesus is real"; "because John 3:16 - says ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’." (Harrison learns bible verses at Sudbury Christian Academy- what is amazing, is that he was able to connect the verse appropriately to our reflection- so wonderful!). In the Lord we serve, Stephanie Manarin- Leader, Liturgy of the Word with Children

The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia). From Pope Francis. April 8, 2016

At my request, Tony Chezzi, retired Catholic Teacher (Principal) will prepare bulletin inserts over the next few weeks – giving a short summary of the recent document on a variety of issues and concerns about Marriage and Family Life. Here is the first such article.

PASTOR

In the coming weeks, the bulletin will offer some insights into the Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia). This has been a long awaited document coming from the two-year Synod on the Family. The Synod was preceded by a questionnaire sent out from the Pope to Catholics around the world to help the participants at the Synod to prepare for the discussions. The Synod was a sweeping self-critical examination of the Church’s teachings and application of those teachings as they pertained to family life, divorced and remarried Catholics, the LBGT community, polygamy and co-habitation which are issues in Africa. Some scholars are comparing The Joy of Love to the Second Vatican Council. During the process, Francis listened, prodded and sometimes steered the process, but he mostly kept his own counsel, until now.

Apostolic Exhortations are not as authoritative as encyclicals and they do not normally change doctrine. However, there is doctrine and there is practice and the pope’s instruction can influence the way Bishops and priests apply doctrine.

There are nine chapters in this “letter,” 264 pages, which offer much food for thought. During the coming weeks, some of the nuggets will be published in the bulletin for your reflection. At some point, if there is interest, an evening or evenings of discussion can be held. Discussion, reflection and prayer are what Pope Francis would like.

“…not all discussions of doctrinal, moral or pastoral issues need to be settled by interventions of the magisterium.* Unity of teaching and practice is certainly necessary in the Church, but this does not preclude various ways of interpreting some aspects of that teaching or drawing certain consequences from it. This will always be the case as the Spirit guides us towards the entire truth (cf. Jn 16:13), until he leads us fully into the mystery of Christ and enables us to see all things as he does. Each country or region, moreover, can seek solutions better suited to its culture and sensitive to its traditions and local needs. For “cultures are in fact quite diverse and every general principle... needs to be inculturated, if it is to be respected and applied”. (AL. 3 )

If you have any feedback regarding what you read, please do not hesitate to contact the office and your comments will be passed along to Tony Chezzi, who is preparing this series. *Magisterium is the official teaching body of the Church which includes the Pope and the Bishops.
